Young Grindell overpowers senior Chancellor

to win Inverness Four-day Open

                                                                                               By ROBIN WILSON
Local senior member Laurie Chancellor,  a key member of the Inverness team that won the senior Northern Counties Cup when played at Inverness in May, took the scalp of the defending Inverness Four-Day tournament holder, John Forbes, in the semi- final and approached the final confidently hoping to add his name to the Rosswood Trophy for a second time.

Chancellor had won in 2000 and then lost a final to Euan Polson in 2007 but in the final against a much younger local member, David Grindell (19), pictured above, he was thwarted by sand over the opening four holes.

Chancellor, pictured below, was in two bunkers on the opening hole then lost the second hole to a Grindell birdie 2.  Chancellor's two shots to recover from a bunker at the third hole and finding another with his approach to the fourth green gave Grindell a comfortable four- hole lead in his first final.
Chancellor's saving par putt from the bunker recovery to no avail as Grindell made his second birdie in four holes.

Chancellor made a brief inroad into the deficit with a birdie on the par five fifth hole but he remained three behind after ten and when Grindell won the 12th and 14th holes he became the 2015 champion by 5 and 4.

Jack the lad seeks second Scottish success in

Slovakia after 65 without practice round

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Jack Doherty shot the round of the day at the D+D REAL Slovakia Challenge, shrugging off the fact that he only arrived at the Penati Golf Resort on Wednesday to lead by one stroke.
In perfect scoring conditions it was Doherty who set the early pace, his morning 65 featuring eight birdies – six coming on the back nine – to hold a narrow advantage from Australian Daniel Gaunt and Dane Jeff Winther.
The Scot, who missed the cut on his previous outing at his home event, the SSE Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts, only arrived in Slovakia on Wednesday evening.
Despite having never seen the course before, the 33 year old immediately took to the Legend Course, with tight iron control and nerveless putting suggesting this could be the week he claims his first professional win.
“I only flew into Slovakia last night so I’d never played the course before – maybe I should do it more often,” he joked.
“I was playing the course blind but it went pretty well. I just started hitting some iron shots nice and close, didn’t leave myself too many long putts but I holed almost everything.
“On the back nine I was in control of my swing and never gave myself too much work to do, and I pretty much holed everything I looked at.
“I’ve been playing quite nicely without really getting everything going, so it’s great to have finally shot a good round and put myself in a good spot ahead for the rounds to come.
“It would be great if I can follow last year’s winner Andrew McArthur and win this week. He’s a good mate and I’d love to make it back-to-back Scottish winners at this event.
“He’s playing in the Scottish Open on The European Tour this week, so it would be great if I can follow in his footsteps – this week the Slovakia Challenge, next year the Scottish Open.”
Winther played superb golf all afternoon, making five birdies and an eagle to tie the lead on seven under par before a dropped shot at the fifth, his 14th, halted his momentum and he settled for an opening 66.
The 27 year old’s strong showing came as little surprise after his fine finish in last week’s AEGEAN Airlines Challenge Tour by Hartl Resort, three rounds in the 60s earning him a tie for third place.
Gaunt is also just one shot back after finishing his round with five straight birdies, with Dutchman Wil Besseling and Finn Janne Kaske another shot behind.
The highest ranked player in the Road to Oman Rankings, last week’s champion Ricardo Gouveia, showed no signs of fatigue despite playing for the fourth straight week.
The Portuguese, behind only Sebastien Gros in the standings, won by four shots in Germany and picked up where he left off with seven birdies to lie in a tie for 14th on three under par.
Meanwhile Craig Hinton made a promising start to his professional career, the Englishman making five birdies on his way to a round of one under par.
The week’s biggest talking point, the par six 15th, playing a full 783 yards, did not seem to faze many of the players, ranking as the easiest hole on the course and yielding 14 eagles.

Olesen is a Great Dane again - leads by two
shots at Gullane
FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Denmark's Thorbjørn Olesen put his injury problems behind him to claim the first-round lead in the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open today.
Two-time European Tour winner Olesen shot a flawless seven under par 63 at Gullane.
The Dane, who finished sixth on his Masters Tournament debut in 2013, discovered a tendon problem in his left hand over the winter but battled on for four events - missing the cut in the last three - before undergoing surgery at the start of February.
"It's been a tough time but I keep working on the right things and hopefully it will come," said the 25 year old, who lost a play-off for the Mauritius Open in May in his first event back after three months on the sidelines.
"I showed today I can still shoot low rounds.I hit almost every green - only missing the 18th - and hit a lot of fairways, which was the key."
At seven under par Olesen led by two shots from American Ryder Cup player Jimmy Walker, Swede Johan Carlsson, Spaniards Alejandro Cañizares and Adrian Otaegui, and English trio Seve Benson, Matthew Nixon and Richard Finch, with defending champion Justin Rose, Graeme McDowell, Rickie Fowler, Matt Kuchar all four under.
Even three-putt bogeys on the last two holes could not dampen McDowell's enthusiasm for a welcome return to form in the week he slipped out of the Official World Golf Ranking's top 50 for the first time in five years.
McDowell's sole top-ten finish on The European Tour this season came in February and he missed the cut when bidding for a third successive Alstom Open de France title last week, a second round of 78 being his worst score in 32 rounds at Le Golf National.
The 35 year old revealed he and coach Pete Cowen had been examining videos of his swing from 2010, the year he won the US Open at Pebble Beach and holed the winning putt in the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor.
"I'm trying to get back to basics and we have narrowed my stance and used my body to swing the club how I used to," McDowell added.
"I feel as if in an attempt to improve some things in my technique, I've actually got worse.
"It was also nice to get back on a course that gives you a few opportunities in benign conditions. I just need a few low numbers to get my belief and confidence back and today will go a long way towards that."
Rose admitted he was beginning to lose his patience after letting a number of opportunities slip, but birdied the 16th and responded to a bogey on the 17th with another birdie from 20 feet on the last.
And the resulting 66 certainly justified his decision to practise at St Andrews on Monday and Tuesday this week and rely on caddie Mark Fulcher to plot a route around Gullane.
"He's doing the hard work and making my schedule a lot easier," Rose said. "It was a pretty stress-free round and I did not burn up too much energy out there."
Almost half the 156-strong field broke par with five-time Major Champion Phil Mickelson - who won The Open Championship one mile down the road at Muirfield in 2013 - carding a 69 after struggling on the greens.

Marc Watt on a roll, wins 2 NE District titles at

Deeside ... and he might win another tomorrow

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Inverallochy's Marc Watt, 15, is on a roll that has won him three trophies already this week - with the prospect of a fourth victory on Friday.

At the Duke's Course, St Andrews, on Wednesday, after three rounds, Watt won the Nick Faldo Series'Under-16 title and a trip to Grand Final (either in USA or Germany).
Today, at Deeside Golf Club, 15-year-old Watt won the Paul Lawrie North-east District Under-18 and Under-16s boys' titles.
Picture above, NE District president Jim Hunter presents Marc Watt with his double handful of trophies.
Tomorrow, he is back at Deeside as one of the four qualifiers for the PLF North-east District U18 match-play championship.
Watt has played competitive golf for four days solid ("It's only a round a day") but he says he is not in the least bit tired and is looking forward to making it five rewarding days in a row on Friday.
"I pitched well today and that helped me get pars or birdies when I missed some of the greens," said the Buchan loon who is the best prospect to come out of Inverallochy since Steven Young, son of the North-east District secretary George.
Steven won the Scottish boys U18 titles three years in a row from the age of 16 and the British boys' championship and also went on to become Walker Cup player. That's the target for young Watt who won the overall title today over the Bieldside course by two strokes with scores of 71 and 69 (35-34)  for level par 140.
Watt3 s 3 at the eight was his third and last birdie of the round. He parred every hole from the ninth onwards.
Runner-up was local junior member Benjamin Henderson with 72 and 70  (33-37) for 142. Henderson had a tap-in birdie 2 at the short first and an eagle 3 at the long sixth. If he had not run up a double bogey 6 at the 10th and also bogeyed the 15th, it could have been an interesting finish.
Sam Locke (Banchory) was third on 144 and defending champion Steven Roger (Cruden Bay) was fourth with 145, a shot ahead of Michael Lawrie 72-74 (who was seven over par for his last 11 holes after being four under for his first six!
The NE District U18 match-play championship semi-finals will tee off as follows tomorrow morning:
9.15am Marc Watt v Steven Roger (referee D Fleming).
9.25am Sam Locke v Benjamin Henderson (referee G Young).
The final will tee off round about 2pm.
The PLG North-east Under-14s one-round championship will start at 11am tomorrow morning.
Finlay Wallace (Portlethen), playing off 20, won the handicap trophy with a net total of 139, the same score as Jamie Seatter (McDonald Ellon) who has four of a handicap. Wallace won on a countback.
