Renfrewshire overpower Ayrshire in boys' match at Greenock
NEWS RELEASE FROM RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION
Greenock Golf
Club was the venue for the boys’ match between Renfrewshire Golf Union and
Ayrshire. Renfrewshire went into the
match unbeaten and with aspirations to win the West of Scotland league for the
first time.
There were a
number of the team unavailable for selection due to holidays and other
tournaments but team managers Graham McGee and Lyall Campbell had every
confidence in the team selected. This
confidence was fully justified as, with torrential rain making life difficult
for both teams, Renfrewshire recorded a 6.5 to 1.5 victory.
Although the
opening game between Ranfurly Castle’s Angus Frood resulted in a win for his
opponent, Alex Murray (Troon Welbeck), two and one, this was the only loss on
the day. All the boys played well but
there were two outstanding wins. First,
Jorg Irving from Elderslie had a convincing six and five win over the
experienced Loudon player, Greg Hampshire.
Then Caldwell’s Alastair McNaughton faced up to Luke Murdoch (Loudon)
who had won last season’s Scottish Junior Tour event. Alastair recorded an amazing seven and six
win.
With two matches
to play, Lanarkshire away and Dunbartonshire at home, Renfrewshire Golf Union
is starting to make room on the trophy cabinet shelf!

Three-day event starts at The Duke's, St Andrews
By George! Duncan sets pace with 69 in Nick
Faldo Series' Scottish championship
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Windyhill's George Duncan squeezed four birdies out of the tough The Duke's Course at St Andrews to set the pace with a two-under-par 69 in the first round of the three-day Nick Faldo Series' Scottish boys' championship.
Duncan leads by two from Edzell's Aidan Smith and PLF Scottish schoolboys champion Darren Howie (Peebles).
Jamie Stewart (Old Ranfurly), one of the title favourites after his impressive victory in the Scottish Under-16 boys' championship over the Arbroath links last week, could do no better than Hfour-over-par 75 with five bogeys and two birdies.
Duncan birdied the fifth, eighth, 11th and 14th, dropping shots only at the 10th and 16th in haves of 34 (two under) and level par 35.
Smith had an eagle 2 at the 353yd 13th but promptly bogeyed the next two holes in halves of 36-35
Howie birdied the first, fifth and 10th but ruined his card with a double bogey 7 at the sixth and also dropped a late shot at the short 16th in halves of 36-35.
Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) leads the much smaller girls field with a one-over-par 72 - three shots ahead of Natash Slater from Furness across the Border. English entries are permitted to this championship.

KOs Rory McIlroy from Gullane field
EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Rory
McIlroy has officially withdrawn from the Aberdeen Asset Management
Scottish Open after revealing on social media that he
had damaged ligaments in his left ankle.
McIlroy
incurred the injury while kicking a football around with some friends
on Saturday. The injury came from what seemed an innocuous ankle twist
as the World Number One ran towards the ball.
The 26 year old will not
make a decision as to when he next tees up until the end of this week at
the earliest.
Peter
Adams, Championship Director of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish
Open, said: “Naturally the news on Rory having to withdraw from the
Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open is very disappointing for the
tournament.
“Any
tournament which loses the World Number One through injury is going to
be effected, but we are still looking forward to hosting one of the
strongest fields in Scottish Open history over one of the great links
tests at Gullane this week.
"The last four Open Champions – of which Rory
is obviously one – have all played in the Aberdeen Asset Management
Scottish Open the week before winning the Claret Jug and we hope to
continue that trend this week.
“We
wish Rory as speedy a recovery as possible and look forward to seeing
him back on the golf course where he belongs as soon he is fully fit to
compete again.”
RORY McILROY BROKE THE NEWS WITH THIS SOCIAL MEDIA STATEMENT
Total rupture of left ATFL (ankle ligament) and associated joint capsule damage in a soccer kickabout with friends on Saturday. Continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment plan day by day. Rehab already started..... Working hard to get back as soon as I can.

Braemar member wins after countback
Host club member Austen Pirie won the Braemar 36-hole Open for players with handicaps 10 to 28 on Sunday.
After the deluge of Saturday, which cut the lower handicap players' competition to one round, the course dried out nicely to allow the Sunday section to go ahead over 36 holes.
Pirie's total of 148 with rounds of 78 and 70 was matched by Martyn Summers (Portlethen), 76-72, but Pirie won by virtue of having the better second round.
Consolation for Summers was that he won the handicap top prize by two shots

Robert Streb putts with wedge to get into
Greenbrier Classic play-off won by Danny Lee
FROM THE GOLF CHANNEL WEBSITE
Putting is tough enough using a regulation putter, but using a wedge is just ridiculous. That's exactly what American Robert Streb was forced to do after breaking his putter mid-way through his round during the Greenbrier Classic on Sunday evening (local time) on the US PGA Tour.
Streb was only one shot off the pace when his putter broke at the base of the shaft after tossing it at his caddy on the ninth hole during his final round. What made it even worse for Streb was that he was still in the hunt for the lead, just a mere stroke behind the leader with nine holes to play.
"I meant to toss (the putter) right next to the bag and it hit the bottom and the head went flying," he said.
A player can replace a club during a round only when it is damaged while playing a shot, so Streb was forced to improvise, opting to use his sand wedge to putt.
What appeared to be a disaster for Streb turned into a miracle as he managed to make five birdie putts with his wedge on the back nine on his way to a round of five under par 65.
The incredible round included a superb 30ft putt on the 13th and a clutch birdie putt on the last to give Streb a share of the lead and a spot in a four-way play-off.
With Streb finishing his round he was able to exchange his wedge for a putter to complete the play-off. In an even stranger twist of fate, Streb didn't even get to use his putter in the play-off.
Streb missed the green with his tee-shot on the first play-off hole and then used a wedge to chip onto the green. He was eliminated when play-off opponents David Hearn and eventual winner Danny Lee both knocked in birdies before he had a chance to putt.
Despite losing the play-off Streb picked up a cool $US500,000, ($666,000). an amount sure to make all the drama surrounding his putter worth it.
New Zealander Lee eventually won the play-off, securing his first win on the US PGA Tour.
+Putting with a wedge is not to be encouraged but if you have to do it, hit the ball with the leading edge of the club, not the face of the wedge!

Largs win Ayrshire club champions title
FROM THE AYRSHIRE GOLF WEBSITE
Largs won the R L Crawford Trophy and Ayrshire club champions title over their home course on Sunday, repeating
their success of 11 years ago when their only previous win in the event, in
2004, was also over the Kelburn course.
The 2015 Ayrshire Club Champions from Largs GC Iain McDonald, Gregor Dickson and David McDonald |
Loudoun set the early pace with Tommy McInally (70) and John
Haggarty (74) providing the two counting scores towards a team total of 144,
but the host club soon overtook the total by three shots, Gregor Dickson (71)
and Iain McDonald (70) providing the two counting scores whilst David McDonald
(75) provided a useful back up third score in the event of a tie.
Defending champions Prestwick put up a stout defence but
fell seven shots short of the leaders, and of the seventeen competing clubs,
only Prestwick St Cuthbert who were one of the later starters looked like
challenging the Largs total.
Steven Wallace retuned a level par 70, but Graeme Gimson and
Craig Telfer both scored 74, leaving Prestwick St Cuthbert alongside Loudoun on
144, three off the pace.
The winning largs team with AGA President James McMurdo |
Tommy McInally (Loudoun) took the prize for the best
individual scratch score of the day, winning a three-way tie on 70 by virtue of
the better inward half.
The CSS for the competition rose to 73 (+2)
The CSS for the competition rose to 73 (+2)
At the conclusion of the championship, Ayrshire Golf
Association President James McMurdo presented
prizes to the successful teams and players, and handed over the championship
trophy and medals to the successful trio from Largs.
Largs GC will now go forward to represent Ayrshire in the
Scottish Club Championship at Fortrose and Rosemarkie on Sunday 20th
September.
