Aisbitt equals course record to lead Logan Trophy at Northumberland

Durham champion Richard Aisbitt shot five-under par 67 today to equal the course record at the Northumberland Golf Club and take the first round lead in the Logan Trophy.
He’s a stroke ahead of past champion, Martin Young from Hampshire, while three other players beat par in the bright and breezy conditions. They include Northumberland county captain Andrew Minnikin who is a member of the host club.
Among the spectators at the first tee was George Logan, who presented the trophy for the English men’s open mid-amateur championship in 1988 and is a past president of both Northumberland and the English Golf Union, now England Golf.
Richard Aisbitt (Brancepath Castle) set off in great style with birdies on the first three holes, rolling in putts of between 10 and 25ft. “It got a bit harder as I made my way round the course,” he said – but his card told another story.
He had only one bogey – on the short fifth, where he missed the green, before amassing three more birdies.
“The course was playing beautifully and I think yesterday’s rain helped because you could throw the ball up and get a bit of spin.”
Aisbitt (image © Leaderboard Photography), who has now won the Durham title three times, was Northern boys’ champion twice and a member of England training squads. He had a brief spell in professional ranks before reverting to amateur status.
He’s being chased by Hampshire’s Martin Young (pictured right) who won the Logan in 2006 and is seeking his second win this week. Next year, the championship will be played at his home course of Brockenhurst Manor in Hampshire and he’d love to be defending the title.
“It would be a dream come true,” he said.
He made a spectacular start and was six-under par after eight holes, having eagled the third and birdied the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth.
“The start was unbelievable,” said Young, who holed a 50-footer on the third, a 20-footer on the next and a 10-footer on the fourth.  He slowed down a little in the middle of the round, with three bogeys in four holes, but another birdie on the 15th helped him to 68.
“It’s a good start, it’s something to move on from,” said Young, who is a past winner of the Lagonda Trophy and the Hampshire Salver.
He also played in last year’s inaugural Concession Cup, which is contested by teams of mid-amateurs and seniors from GB&I and the USA.
Northumberland captain Andrew Minnikin has opted to play in the Logan over his own county championship, despite leading the qualifiers for the matchplay stages. “Knowing George so well meant this was always going to be the one,” said Minnikin, who has previously won the county title.
He is enjoying a very good season, having won three county events and made it through to final qualifying for The Open. He underlined his form today, playing at the end of the field in the increasingly breezy conditions, and with the added pressure of being at home.
“I got off to a slow start but birdied two of the last four holes to make it a nice respectable round,” he said. “It was tough having a late tee time and being at home, knowing there was a score to be had.”
Meanwhile defending champion Martin Foulkes (Worksop) made a disappointing start, reaching the turn in six-over before battling back in one-under for a total of 77.
Sweden’s Daniel Sandman made short work of the 171-yard seventh, where he had a hole-in one using an eight-iron. He hunted for the ball behind the green before looking in the cup to discover he had had his fourth ace, three of them in competition. Sandman is part of a three-man Swedish squad taking part in the championship.

South African jumps into lead with an

eight-under 63 in Germany

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
South African Dean Burmester moved into pole position to follow his close friend and compatriot Jake Roos into the AEGEAN Airlines Challenge Tour by Hartl Resort winners’ circle as a course record-equalling eight under second round 63 moved him three clear at the top in Germany.
The four-time Sunshine Tour winner leapfrogged Portugal’s Ricardo Gouveia - the man who set the course record on day one to earn the first round lead - and moved to 12 under par for the tournament, just one shot shy of Roos’ winning score last year - although the par has been reduced by one to 71.
Much like his friend and 2014 Challenge Tour Graduate Roos, Burmester is a seasoned winner on Africa's top tour and two of his victories have come this season.
No wonder, then, the 26 year old is feeling confident heading into the weekend on a Beckenbauer Course which he believes is perfectly suited for South Africans.
“It’s awesome to tie the course record from yesterday,” said the Zimbabwe-born player, who has birdied 14 of his 36 holes this week, with an eagle to boot.

“I played very nicely so I’m really happy. The key to my success is that this is probably the closest it gets to home conditions for me.
“The heat has been tremendous over the past few days and there has been a little bit of wind around, but I also found something in my putting stroke just before I teed off in the first round and it seemed to carry on today.
“I made a couple of good putts coming in and that gave me this good score. I’m really happy out there, I’m feeling comfortable and I like the look of the golf course.
“I've won two this year so I’ve hit a bit of a purple patch and I’m just trying to ride the wave. I’d like to think I know how to go on and win. You learn how to do it, there’s no other way, you just learn from experience.
“You unfortunately learn by coming second. Some days you’ll win and you don’t know how you did it. Other days it’s just flawless. I’ve come second a few times and I’ve been playing well for a while now. I’m really looking to broaden my horizons and if I do end up lifting the trophy on Sunday that will be a step in the right direction.”
Gouveia, meanwhile, carded four birdies on the way to a one under par 70 and although he admitted it was difficult to follow up such a stunning first round, he was happy to still be right in the mix heading into the weekend in Bad Greisbach.

David Law made the low-scoring cut despite a second-round 74 but Wallace Booth missed the cut by four with a 76.

Clark and Hamilton tie for Central Scotland Seniors Open at Glenbervie

By GORDON THOMSON
In a very tight finish at Glenbervie today, the holder Ronnie Clark (Erskine) tied with Duncan Hamilton (Mortonhall) on 142. They finished one shot ahead of Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon) and Lindsay Blair (Grangemouth) on 143.

Hamilton sprang from the chasing pack with a superb second score of 68 which included an inward half of 33 to set a target of 142.  Moultrie reached the turn in 33 and looked set to better this but came home in 40 due to some putting lapses.

That left Clark playing in the last group and bidding for a hat-trick of wins in this event. He overcame a lost ball at the 11th  hole to return a 72 and tie with Hamilton.

Laurie Chancellor (Inverness) took fifth place on 145 with former internationals, George Barrie (Callander) and Ian Brotherston (Dumfries and County) in joint sixth place on 146.

Lindsay Blair had the added consolation of the main handicap prize, just pipping local favourite, Denis McQuade and George Barrie.

Glenbervie was in superb condition and presented an excellent test for the high quality field.

Dubuisson boosts home hopes in France

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Ryder Cup team-mates Victor Dubuisson and Martin Kaymer set up a mouth-watering weekend at the Alstom Open de France as the pair head into the final two rounds tied for the lead alongside Spaniard Rafa Cabrera-Bello.
Dubuisson and Cabrera-Bello both signed for one under par 70, while two-time Major champion Kaymer went one better by birdieing the last for a 69, and at four under par the trio is one shot clear of five players including Italy’s Francesco Molinari and Englishman James Morrison.
Aiming to become the first home player to win the €3million event since Thomas Levet in 2011, Dubuisson had an eagle, three birdies and three bogeys on a sweltering day at Le Golf National and led for most of the day.
Kaymer dropped back with a double-bogey at the 15th, but finished the tough closing stretch by parring the 16th and 17th and signing off with an impressive three from 15 feet on the 18th.
Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell, who was aiming to win the tournament three years running, missed the halfway cut, as did Englishmen Lee Westwood, but it was a day to remember for young Italian Renato Paratore, who became the first player in European Tour history to record a round consisting of 18 fours.
Quotes
Victor Dubuisson
“I had a great round and I'm very happy about the way I played today. It was really tough out there with the wind this afternoon. I’m very excited, of course. But on this course you can't afford any mistakes. I will have to play again very well tomorrow, and if the putting is good it can be a good result.
“At the beginning of the season, I was playing one event or two events and then having five weeks’ break and then another two events. Now I've started to play more events in a row and that's probably why my game is improving.”
Martin Kaymer
“The last three holes were very tough. When I was standing over that putt on 18, I thought there was a very good chance to get into the last group for tomorrow, and that was the goal.  Fortunately I had a good read and made a good putt. After the double bogey, it does make it feel a little bit better.
“It's been a few months since I've been in one of the last groups of a tournament. Obviously I enjoy the golf course and have had success here. The crowds are behind me and playing with Victor the last couple of days was good fun, too.  A lot of people were following our group. So I think it's going to be an exciting weekend.”
Rafa Cabrera-Bello
“Two consecutive rounds under par on this course is very good.  It's a very tough course.  There is less rough this year, yes, but it is still hard. The best thing about it is I haven't had really much, much trouble.  I've made some bogeys of course, but never put myself in position of shooting a high number. Some things have been going wrong because my scoring during the first two days, or even Saturday as well, compared to Sunday is not quite the same.  But I'm working on that, so I'm going to keep knocking on the door and one day it will open.”
Francesco Molinari
“I was looking forward to the week because I have played well here in the past, and I enjoy this course a lot. The game is in good shape.  Yesterday, probably because we teed off so late, I think I lost a bit of concentration.  I didn't hit the ball so well.  But today was really solid, really nice. I love the course, but that doesn't stop you from making bogeys and worse. Sometimes on this course when you're out of position, you just have to take the medicine, make your bogey and move to the next hole.
“I was halfway here on Tuesday, at the bottom of the Channel, when the French protesters stopped us and we had to turn around and go back to London and spend a few extra hours at home, which was nice. So I had an extra night in my own bed and flew out Wednesday morning.”
Graeme McDowell
“I’m just struggling to get it in the fairway mainly I suppose.  As firm and as fast as this golf course is, if you're not hitting the fairway, you've got a little problem hitting it close to the flag. I've got a lot of technique in my head and I have to strip that out, but I'm having problems stripping it out. I've got to get back to basics and try to clear the mind a little bit.  I’ve just been working too hard on trying to get the technique fixed and making it worse.”
Renato Paratore
“It’s strange )(a 4 at every hole for a 72. On the last hole I wasn’t aware of it, and I put on my stats card a one-putt from four metres. So that was another four. Then I discovered it in recording and it was funny. It was easy to read the card! I took a photo of my scorecard in recording and maybe I’ll put it on Twitter later. You could say it was a solid round.”

Drummond and Oldcorn in the Swiss mix

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Carl Mason’s love affair with Golf Club Bad Ragaz continued on the opening day of the Swiss Seniors Open, as the Englishman – who is bidding to win the tournament for a record fourth time – finished with five birdies for a round of 63.
Mason took the title in 2007, 2008 and 2010, and his bid for an unprecedented fourth victory got off to the perfect start as he finished with a flourish to set the clubhouse target on seven under par.
The 62 year old, whose 25 European Senior Tour titles is a record, has not tasted victory in the over-50s ranks for four years, but he came into the €300,000 event buoyed by a top three finish in his last appearance, the ISPS HANDA PGA Seniors Championship.
Mason carried that fine form to the Swiss Alps, reeling off three birdies in a front nine of 32, before undoing some of his good work with a bogey at the par five 12th hole.
But he made amends in quite spectacular fashion, plundering a quintet of gains from the 14th hole to surge to the top of a leaderboard he has dominated on numerous occasions.
He said: “To have five birdies in a row on the last five holes certainly helps! I feel very good about my game at the minute. I hit a lot of very good shots today, as well as a few not so good ones, but I only had one bogey on the 12th hole, so that was very pleasing.
“I’m ready for the next two days now, hopefully I can keep this good run going. The heat here isn’t a problem for me – I much prefer it to the cold! And I spend quite a lot of time in Florida, so I’m well used to it.”
With the afternoon starters yet to complete their rounds, Mason’s nearest challengers are his fellow Englishman Mark James and Scotland’s Ross Drummond, who both signed for rounds of 65.

Edinburgh's Andrew P
James, Europe’s Ryder Cup Captain in 1999, got off to the worst possible start with a bogey at the first, but rallied with three straight birdies to turn in 34.
He then rattled off four further gains on the way home to finish alongside Drummond on five under par.

Edinburgh's Andrew Oldcorn is joint 4th on 68.
James said: “A round of 65 is always a good score, no matter where you’re playing. I hit a couple of really good shots out there today, a few that could also have been a bit better. My putting was quite good in the main, but there’s still some room for improvement there. I really enjoyed the conditions today – the course was in good shape, and the hotter the better for me!”
Drummond’s sole bogey on an otherwise immaculate card came on the par four eighth hole, but the Scot notched three birdies either side of that blemish to sign for the lowest round of his season so far.
