PGA EUROPRO TOUR EVENT'S LONG DAY AFTER PLAY SUSPENDED

Scots Neil Fenwick and Scott Crichton 1-2 with a round to go at Montrose

NEWS RELEASE
By NICK TEALE

Neil Fenwick, pictured right by courtesy of the sponsors,  will take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters at Montrose Links.

The Dunbar Golf Club representative carded a two-under-par 69 for this second round in the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour event to take his tournament score to nine under, one ahead of compatriot Scott Crichton.

Darryn Lloyd, who shared the seven-under 18-hole lead with Fenwick, carded level-par 71 on day two and is one of four players sharing third on seven under par.

Play during Wednesday afternoon was suspended for two hours 50 minutes due to lightning and round two was finally completed when the last group putted out at 10:20pm, the light summer nights of east Scotland proving crucial in allowing the round to be completed without falling into Thursday.

Fenwick managed to avoid the afternoon weather delay having teed off at 7:41am. He made three birdies in his round, at the 5th going out and at 15 and 18 coming in, his three at the last making amends for a bogey at the 17th.

Crichton (Aberdour Golf Club) signed for a five-under-par second-round 66 to move to eight under and second. The Scot was par for the round at the turn after bogeys at 2 and 8 equalised birdies at 6 and 7. However, a birdie at 10 and a four-hole run of par breakers from the 13th saw him come home in 30.

Christopher Evans (Wishaw Golf Club), Paul Reed (Bristol and Clifton Golf Club), Tom Perry (Abbeydale Golf Club) and Lloyd (Stamford Marquees) share third on seven under, two behind Fenwick. Reed and Perry shared the day’s best score of 65 on the par-71 Medal Course.

A cut to the leading 50 players plus ties has now been made with those golfers one under par or better after 36 holes progressing to play Thursday’s final round, which will be filmed for a two-hour highlights package to air on Sky Sports on Tuesday, July 14.

Scots 1-2 at halfway in Global Golf Post Under-16 boys' championship

It's almost too good to be true! At the halfway stage of the Global Golf Post Scottish Under-16 boys' open championship at Arbroath, two Scottish lads head the international fiel, writes Colin Farquharson.
Jamie Stewart (Old Ranfurly), soon to represent Scotland in the European Young Masters, carried on playing brilliant golf and, with rounds of 65 and 66 for a nine-under-par tally of 131, he leads by two shots from Peebles' Darren Howie, winner of the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish schoolboys title a month or two ago.
Howie has had rounds of 66 and 67 for 133.
In third place is an English teeanger, Jake Benson (Beeston Fields) after rounds of 69 and 66.
Benson is two shots clear of four players on 137, including the intriguely-named FRENCH lad Ross MacIntosh from Aix les Bains, so Benson looks, on paper, to be the only threat to either Stewart or Howie making it a joy day for Scottish golf.
The cut fell at 144 and other Scots through to play two rounds on Thursday are Marc Watt (Inverallochy), tied 11th on 139 (70-69), Callum Burns (Balmore) T18 on 1Joh41 (73-68), Callum Bruce (Duff House Royal), T25 on 142 (70-72), Andrew Moir (Elgin) T29 on 143 (68-75) and four who made it on the limit mark of 144 - John Paterson (St Andrews New), Kyle Reid (Balmore), Alex Simpson (Strathmore) and Keith Bowman (St Andrews New).
A hour's playing time was lost early in the afternoon when the SGU officials detected lightning in the area and suspended play.

Scottish Young Professionals Championship at West Lothian

Louis Gaughan cuts Paul O'Hara winning margin to 2 shots with fine last-day display

Paul O'Hara regained the Scottish Young Professionals' Championship he won in 2013 with a front-running performance that saw him finish two shots clear of the field with a 13-under-par total of 271 at West Lothian Golf Club, Bo'ness, writes Colin Farquharson.
O'Hara collected the £1,000 first prize as he had looked like doing from early in the tournament when he steadily built up a big lead.
The Clydeway Golf man finished with rounds of 67, 65, 69 and 70 but it was not quite so pressure-free on the final day as O'Hara would have liked.
Runner-up Louis Gaughan (Bathgate), nine strokes behind O'Hara after two rounds,  actually made up seven shots on the winner (132 to 139) over the final day's 36 holes.
O'Hara had to slip back into top gear as his lead steadily diminished. He had five birdies in his final round  with those at the 13th, 14th and 15th the most vital after a double bogey 6 at the eighth had possibly raised Gaughan's hopes that he could close the gap.
Gaughan, who had seven birdies in his final halves of 35-32, had scores of 70, 71, 65 and 67 for 273 and collected the £800 second prize, five shots ahead of the third-placed Alan Welsh (Cathkin Braes) who had rounds of 70, 70, 68 and 71 to earn £600.
Defending champion Gavin Hay (Nairn Dunbar) finished down the field on 279, a third-round 80 killing any hopes he might have had of a top 15 or 20 finish.
