George Murray  seeks repeat of his 2010

Challenge Tour win at Aviemore

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
As the Challenge Tour returns to the home of golf, celebrating the tenth staging of the SSE Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts, former champion George Murray is also marking a significant milestone.
It is five years ago that the 32 year old from Anstruther, Fife sealed his first professional victory in this event at Aviemore, a dominant four-stroke win on the Macdonald Spey Valley course, which helped earn him graduation to The European Tour for the 2011 season.
That remains his only career win to date, and the Scot openly admits he has not always had the best form on home soil in the past.
“I’ve got a strange record up here,” he said. “I know I won here in 2010, so I’ll always have fond memories of this place, but I’ve missed the cut every other time I’ve played here.
“But I feel I’ve been playing alright recently. I’ve not scored that well this season but hopefully things will turn and I can get another good result here this week.
“I feel my game’s in pretty good shape but it’s a strange tour - all you need is a couple of decent results and you’re suddenly right back up there.
“I’ve got the whole family up with me this week which makes a big difference. I’ve been away for four weeks in a row so it’s nice to get a chance to spend some time with them this week, though hopefully I’ll be too busy come the business end over the weekend to see much of them.”
Murray was the last home winner of the event and, with typically Scottish weather forecast this week, he is hopeful that five year drought can be ended on Sunday.
“I don’t really enjoy the bad weather to be honest,” he said. “It’s supposed to be getting worse over the weekend so hopefully my Scottish roots will stand me in decent stead.
“And if I had to tip someone to win this week I’d say Andrew McArthur. He’s been playing very well, the results don’t lie. He’s had a couple of decent results on The European Tour as well.
“It would be great if we could have a home winner here in Scotland and if it’s not me this week I’d like it to be him.”

Murray is a member of SSE Team Hydro which provides financial support for emerging professionals but, after a patchy start to the 2015 season, sits 90th in the Road to Oman Rankings, though he knows how quickly he could climb up with a good run of form.
“There’s a long way to go this season,” he said. “There are still so many events, and you only need to pick up one or two good results and you’re up and running.
“You just need to be patient, keep doing what you feel is right, and I definitely feel as if I’m working on the right stuff and it’s all nearly there.
“Everyone here is trying to get on up to the big stage and get a couple of results there, there’s nothing better. I was lucky to get a shot a few years ago and I liked the taste, so I’d love to get there again!”

GEORGE BRUCE TESTIMONIAL PRO-AM

AT WESTHILL ON WEDNESDAY

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Westhill Golf Club's popular professional George Bruce's 21 years at the club are being marked by the members holding a testimonial season as a thank you for his loyalty and exceptional service.

One of the main events is a pro-am at the club on Wednesday this week.
Eighteen members' teams of three partnering mainly North-east club professionals have entered.
PGA in Scotland captain Stewart Syme (Drumoig) will also attend the event.
On Friday, October 16,  there will be a testimonial dinner in the Holiday Inn, Westhill with Marriott Dalmahoy professional Alan Tait, renowned for his after-dinner entertainment, the main guest speaker.
Mhorvan Sherrett is chairman of the George Bruce testimonial season  committee.
"George is an 'Insch loon, and started his pro career as an assistant at Ballater but very quickly came under Ronnie McDonald's wing as an assistant at Westhill. When Ronnie moved on, George took over as Westhill's club pro, and he  has been here ever since, although he doesn't look a day older than the  day he arrived at Westhill," said Mhorvan.
"George is sponsored by Wilson Staff who are also supporting the event."
George Bruce says he is not about to retire - "I'm good for another 21  years!"
"I was only 16 when I started my PGA apprenticeship with Fraser Mann at Ballater and I consider myself very lucky to have a had job I've enjoyed so much.
"The members have been great to me over my 21 years at Westhill, the last 17 of which I have been the club pro, and I cannot thank them enough for organising a testimonial season for me."

Justin Rose, Charley Hull become England Golf Ambassadors
Justin Rose and Charley Hull have agreed to become England Golf Ambassadors to champion the work of the organisation.
Rose, the 2013 US Open champion, and Hull, the youngest-ever Solheim Cup player, both represented England as amateurs before embarking on their stellar professional careers.
David Joy, Chief Executive of England Golf, commented:
“We are delighted to welcome Justin and Charley as our Ambassadors and look forward to working with them.
"Their support will be invaluable as part of our strategy to inspire new golfers and spread the message that golf is a game for all.”
He added: “We are aware, like many other sports, golf faces challenges around declining participation.  We now better understand these issues and are committed to delivering our strategy - Raising Our Game - halting the decline in participation and membership and bringing growth back to golf in England.”
Raising Our Game sets out a vision of England Golf at the heart of a network of partners, working together to tackle the challenges facing the game and create an even brighter future for golf.
The strategy’s aims include increasing the number of regular golfers, creating stronger clubs and improving the image of golf.
Justin Rose remarked: “My career started at county level and representing my country is among my fondest memories, playing at a very, very high level and developing skills.”
He also paid tribute to the “thousands of volunteers working for England Golf and helping to create many great players, now and in the future.”
Charley Hull added: “Golf can get you hooked. I can’t picture myself doing anything else.
“You can play with your friends, it’s quite relaxing and you can burn 600-700 calories playing golf."
As an amateur Justin Rose won both the McGregor and Carris Trophies - English U16 and U18 boys’ championships – in 1995.
He went on to win the 1997 St Andrews Links Trophy and in the same year became one of the youngest-ever Walker Cup players, aged 17 years and 10 days
He turned professional in 1998 after finishing fourth in the Open Championship.
In 2013 Rose won the US Open championship, becoming the first Englishman to win a major since 1996. His Ryder Cup record includes a key role in the 2012 Miracle at Medinah, when he secured a vital point against Phil Mickelson in the Sunday singles.
He was Europe’s most successful player in last year’s victory at Gleneagles, when he was undefeated in his five games.
Charley Hull first made golfing headlines as a nine-year-old when she won a national ladies’ competition.
By the age of 15 she was England’s top woman amateur, having won the English and Welsh stroke play titles among other events.
At 16 she played in her first major, the Kraft Nabisco, and finished in the top 40, before going on to represent GB and I in the winning Curtis Cup team of 2012 at Nairn.
The following year she turned professional, was runner-up in five consecutive events and became the youngest-ever Solheim Cup player when she was picked for Europe’s winning team.
Hull finished the season as Rookie of the Year and topped the Ladies European Tour order of merit at the end of 2014.
