Sebastien Gros heading for local hero status at Najeti Open - first French winner in 14 years?

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Frenchman Sebastien Gros sailed into a commanding lead on the third day of the Najeti Open  after a round of 67 in northern France.
Gros, bidding to deliver a first home victory for 14 years, stormed seven shots clear of the field after notching six birdies in another superb display at Aa St-Omer Golf Club, in Lumbres.
Five birdies in his first ten holes set the tone for Gros and, although he bogeyed the 11th with a three putt, the 25 year old got that shot back with another gain on the 17th to climb to 12 under par.
The Frenchman’s closest rivals are the Antipodean pair of Ryan Fox and Terry Pilkadaris, who seemingly have the proverbial mountain to climb if they are to overhaul Gros at the summit of the leaderboard.
But Gros is taking nothing for granted as he seeks to secure his maiden Challenge Tour title and so follow in the footsteps of his compatriots Pascal Edmond (2000) and Sébastien Delagrange (2001), the winners of the first two editions of the event.
He said: “I kept the same attitude as during the first two days. Me and my caddie were laughing the whole way round again, which completely took my mind off the golf. We’ve known each other since we were 12, and we work really well together.
“The birdies were nice today but possibly my most important putt was for par on the 12th, especially as I’d just made bogey on the 11th. I hit a bad drive and a poor iron shot, and although my bunker shot was good, it didn’t quite react as I’d expected. But I holed a really solid, important putt which kept me going.
“I didn’t play as well on the back nine today, but the good thing is that my good shots have been really good this week, and that was the case on 17. It’s not over yet but if I can keep calm on the final day, I should be fine.”
Fox, son of former New Zealand rugby international Grant, birdied the last for a round of 68 and a five under par total after 54 holes.
The Kiwi paid a debt of gratitude to Pilkadaris, who during practice showed him some of the nuances which make Aa St-Omer GC such an exacting test.
Fox said: “I probably own Terry more than a drink for having helped me discover the course during practice on Tuesday. I know him well and he gave me some good tips, so I don’t think I’d be in this position without him.
“I’m generally a calm player, which you need to be on this course. Even if you think you’ve hit a good shot you can sometimes get punished, so you’ve just got to stay patient and take advantage of the few chances you create.”
Pilkadaris got off to a bad start, with a bogey at the first hole, and his day got even worse when he ran up a double bogey at the fifth after finding an impossible lie in the left rough.
But the Australian rallied in impressive fashion with four birdies in his next five holes to give himself an outside chance of securing his first Challenge Tour victory at the age of 41.
He said: “Sebastien is way ahead but anything can happen on a Sunday, especially on this course. I finished second in Scotland last year and I have had some good finishes, but it has been a while since I’ve played in the last group in the final round, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) and Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre), two of the Tartan Tour's front-liners, tied on five-under-par 65 for first place in the Clyde Scaffolding Hayston Golf Club pro-am at the Glasgow venue today.
Both earned £1,173 for heading a field of 44 pros, 15 of whom bettered the par of 70. It was a third pro-am win of the season for both.
Fox had seven birdies - second, third, fourth, fifth,12th, 15th and 16th - offset by bogeys at the sixth and 14th in halves of 33 and 32.
Hutch saddled himself with a double bogey 7 at the long second but then covered the remaining holes in seven under par, thanks to an eagle 3 at the long 16th and birdies at the third, fifth, ninth, 12th and 17th in halves of 35-30.
Craig Haugh (Cawder) led the Porcelain Plus 4 amateur trio of Mike McGirr (handicap 7), Jack McGirr 97) and Peter McGlynn (15) to victory in the team event with a 20 under par net total of 120.

Frenchman Romain Langasque is new British Amateur champion

Grant Forrest goes down by 4 and 2 in final

Grant Forrest (Craigielaw) lost by 4 and 2 to Frenchman Romain Langasque in the 36-hole final of the 120th British Amateur Championship final at Carnoustie.

Forrest lived up to the old adage .. "you play your best golf getting to the final and not so well in the final itself."
Bidding to become the second Scot in a row to win the prestigious title - Bradley Neil (Blairgowrie) was the winner 12 months ago - Forrest was three down after 18 holes, having been five down at one stage before lunch.
Any hopes of an afternoon revival died very early in the second round.
The Scot bogeyed the 19th and 20th to go five down. Then his opponent birdied the 21st to go six up.
Forrest bogeyed the 23rd to go seven down and that was it really.
Langasque lost three holes later in the round but it was too little, too late as far as Forrest was concerned.
Never mind, to be the second best player in a capacity field of very good players is no small achievent.

Open place at St Andrews a bonus for Carnoustie winner Romain Langasque

 NEWS RELEASE FROM THE RandA
Frenchman Romain Langasque saw off the challenge of Scotland’s Grant Forrest to win the 120th Amateur Championship at Carnoustie today.

Langasque was in commanding form as he won the 36-hole Final by 4 and 2 and he has secured a place in next month’s 144TH Open at St Andrews. His victory also gains him a place in next year’s US Open at Oakmont and, traditionally, an invitation to the Masters Tournament.

The 20-year-old Frenchman, is a member of the French Federation's Pole Francais - based at European Tour Destination Terre Blanche where he works with the European Tour Performance Institute
He sealed the win on the par three 34th hole when Forrest conceded the hole and the match after his tee shot had gone through the back of the green and his chip coming back went past the hole with Langasque facing a 10ft birdie putt.

Langasque, who hails from Cabris in southern France, took charge of the early proceedings in the morning round and won the par four 3rd hole after splashing out from a greenside bunker to a foot from the hole.

The Frenchman notched up three consecutive birdies, holing three putts in the 20ft range, from the 8th hole to go four up and take a grip on the match.
Forrest bogeyed the par four 11th hole to fall five behind but showed his battling qualities to bounce back with an excellent drive and approach for an eagle on the par five 12th to win the hole.

Langasque kept up the pressure and restored his five-hole lead by winning the 14th after Forrest put his drive out of bounds.

Forrest recovered to win the 15th with a birdie and the 16th when Langasque failed to get up and down with his chip from left of the green. On the 17th, Forrest pulled his approach into thick rough left of the green and, when he could only find the edge of the green with his first chip and his next went past the cup, the hole was lost.

On the 18th, Langasque lost the hole after driving into a bunker on the right of the fairway and finding a greenside bunker before hitting his escape out of bounds to the left of the green. He finished the morning round with a three-hole lead.

In the afternoon round, Forrest’s hopes of mounting a comeback were severely dented when his opening drive found a bush in the rough to the left of the fairway and he lost the hole. He fell further behind when his tee shot again found the rough on the left on the 20th hole and Langasque birdied the par four 21st after driving the green.
Langasque moved seven holes ahead on the 23rd hole, after Forrest missed the green to the left, and things looked ominous for the Scot.

The Craigielaw player won the 24th with a birdie and the 26th after Langasque found a bunker with his tee shot. His recovery continued on the 30th hole when he holed a near 60 ft putt for eagle and then on the 32nd when Langasque found a bunker with his tee shot and then two other bunkers to let Forrest win the hole with a birdie four.

On the 33rd hole, Langasque hit a wonderful seven iron shot 190 yards from a fairway bunker on to the green to ensure the hole was halved and he went on to secure his victory at the next hole with a precise four iron approach to 10ft.

Langasque becomes the third Frenchman to win the Amateur Championship after Philippe Ploujoux in 1981 and Julien Guerrier in 2006.

Key quotes

Romain Langasque

“This is just a dream for me. It is just incredible that I am going to play at St Andrews in one month’s time for The Open.

“When I came here I played my first practice round and played really well at Panmure maybe six or seven-under-par and then when I played my practice round here at Carnoustie I was maybe six or seven over so when it came to the first round I just tried to do my best on every shot.

“I played ok for the first two rounds and then the more the competition advanced the more I played well. This morning was my best round of the championship and I played really well.”
Grant Forrest

“The start this afternoon really killed it for me. Coming back from seven down was always going to be a tall order.

“The bunker on the 15th (the 33rd) is one of the few bunkers on the course you can move the ball forward from and he hit a great shot. I ended up getting a half. If I had won that hole then two down with three to play is a lot different.

“This week has been a great confidence boost for me which is just what I needed at this point. My confidence was a bit low because I hadn’t been playing well. I am disappointed not to have won but it is good to see that I can compete in a championship like this.”

Scot three down after first 18 holes at Carnoustie

Frenchman douses Forrest fire in Amateur Championship Final

FROM THE RandA WEBSITE
Frenchman Romain Langasque will take a three-hole lead against Craigielaw's Grant Forre into the afternoon round of the Amateur Championship's 36-hole final at Carnoustie.
The 20-year-old from Cannes took charge of the early proceedings in the morning round and Forrest was forced to hole testing putts on the first two holes to remain all square. On the par four 3rd hole, both players found greenside bunkers with their tee shots but Langasque splashed out to a foot from the hole and the putt was conceded. Forrest’s 8 ft putt lipped out and his opponent went one up.
The next four holes were halved in par before the Frenchman holed a series of lengthy putts for three consecutive birdies from the 8th hole to go four up and take a grip on the match.
Forrest bogeyed the par four 11th hole to fall five behind but showed his battling qualities to bounce back with an excellent drive and approach for an eagle on the par five 12th to win the hole after Langasque found a bunker from the tee and could only manage a birdie.
The Frenchman, who won the Southern Cross Invitational in Argentina in March, kept up the pressure and restored his five-hole lead by winning the 14th after Forrest put his drive out of bounds.
Forrest recovered to win the 15th with a birdie and the 16th when Langasque failed to get up and down with his chip from left of the green.
On the 17th, Forrest found the fairway from the tee while his opponent was in the right hand rough and could only hit his approach 20 yards short of the green.
The 2014  St Andrews Links Trophy champion and 2012 Scottish amateur champion  pulled his approach into thick rough left of the green and, when he could only find the edge of the green with his first chip and his next went past the cup, the hole was lost.
On the 18th hole, Langasque drove into a bunker on the right of the fairway and his escape found a greenside bunker on the right.
With Forrest on the green in two, Langasque overcooked his bunker shot to go out of bounds beyond the green and was forced to concede the hole to leave him three up going into this afternoon’s round.
Grant is trying to succeed compatriot Bradley Neil, the 2014 title-winner, as Amateur champion.

Reed and Spieth share lead - but stars miss the

US Open cut at Chambers Bay

FROM ESPN.COMP
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Washington. -- Patrick Reed and Jordan Speith are the halfway leaders at five-under-par 135 in theUnited States Open but the Friday night talk was more about who missed the cut rather than those still in contention.
A few of the best-known professional golfers in the world, including three-time U.S. Open champion Tiger Woods, two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson and defending U.S. Open champion Martin Kaymer, failed to make the cut Friday in the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay.

Others players who didn't make the cut included Rickie Fowler, 2010 U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell and six-time PGA Tour winner Hunter Mahan.
However, a bogey by amateur Nick Hardy, playing in the final threesome of the second round Friday, let in 15 golfers at 5 over who would have missed the cut if Hardy had made par. Among the golfers who got in at 5 over were Sergio Garcia, Jimmy Walker, Colin Montgomerie, Ian Poulter, Camilo Villegas, Angel Cabrera and Webb Simpson.
Local favorite Ryan Moore, who grew up in nearby Puyallup, Washington, and has four PGA Tour victories, also missed the cut, shooting 9 over.
Phil Mickelson, still hoping to win the event for the first time, shot 74 on Friday but finished at 3 over for 36 holes to stay inside the cut line.
Woods finished the event at 16 over, shooting 80 on Thursday and 76 on Friday.
"On a golf course like this, you get exposed," Woods said. "You have to be precise and dialed in. Obviously, I didn't have that."
Some of the players have complained about the condition of the greens at Chambers Bay, feeling they are too bumpy, too brown and have too much undulation.
Garcia missed a three-putt on the 18th hole Friday that caused him to fall below the cut line until Hardy's late bogey.
Mike Davis, the executive director of the USGA, is the man who makes the final decision on where the pins are placed each day and how much water is used on the greens each evening. Davis defended the greens Friday and explained how the USGA looked at some of the players' complaints.
"Listen, we all like smooth greens, no doubt about it," Davis said Friday on the Fox Sports 1 telecast. "But some of it is aesthetics. Your eyes tell you, '(Geez), the colorations. It can't be smooth.' But it wouldn't be a U.S. Open without some complaints here and there."
Davis also said the USGA is happy with the results of the first two rounds at the links-style golf course, a first for a U.S. Open.
"Good shots are being rewarded," Davis said. "Listen, this is a different type of test, but this is still a U.S. Open, and it's about being able to handle your nerves at a major."
On Friday, Chambers Bay played at 7,695 yards, the longest course in the history of any of the four major championships.
