golden oldies to Meldrum House August 17-19

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Some of the leading senior pro golfers in Europe will be heading for the North-east of Scotland soon to play in a new 54-hole tournament at Meldrum House Golf Club, Oldmeldrum.

The tournament, to be staged from August 17 to 19, will be called the Aberdeen Masters and will have a prize fund in the region of £35,000. Category 1 amateurs aged over 48 years will also be eligible to enter.
Co-sponsors are Thistle Windows, D and G Fitness and Meldrum House Hotel.
Man behind the tournament is Meldrum House Golf Club member and Thistle Windows CEO, Nick Robson (pictured)
"We already have an almost full field with a lot of great players from byegone days, such as Paul Broadhurst , Miguel Martin , Gary Wolstenhome, Gordon Brand, Ronan Raffert , Stephen McAllister , Pedro Linhart , Santiago Luna, Bill Longmuir , Mark Farry. Philip Price, D J Russell, Domingo Hosptal, Brian Marchbank and others all committed to the event already. There will be around 72 in the field."
First prize will be between £6,000 and £8,000, says Mr Robson, stressing that the tournament, although being staged at a private members' course, will be open to the public to spectate.

+Nick Robson is an active senior golfer. He has won a tournament in Spain when the field included professionals.

Ian Angus is main hope of keeping seniors'

title in Scotland

Duff House Royal's Ian Angus (pictured by Steve Ellis) has had only three birdies in 36 holes but the Banff player is still the main hope of a home winner in the Spire Murrayfield Scottish senior men's open amateur 54-hole stroke-play championship at Deeside Golf Club, Bieldside on Aberdeen's western suburbs tomorrow.
Angus has had rounds of 72 and 73 for a two-round tally of five-over-par 145.
He lies tied fourth behind the England 1-2-3 at the top of the leaderboard
Ian Attoe (Worplesdon) is in the pole position on 142 with rounds of 73 and 69.
He leads by one shot from Mark Stones (Boyce Hill) (69-74) and by two from third placed Richard Partridge (Wildernesse), 73-71 for 144.
Overnight leader Glynn Rees - he is a Welshman after all - crashed from a four-under 66 to a nine-over 79 but, tied fourth with Angus on 145, he is by no means out of it.
Deeside has proved not so easy as some thought and Rees' figures prove that. He had a triple bogey 8 at the third and a double bogey 6 at the 18th in halves of 41-38.
The next best Scot after Angus is Ian Jeen (Scotscraig) in joint seventh place on 149
The cut was much higher than predicted and eventually fell at 155 with 54 players advancing to Friday's final 18 holes. Defending champion Barry Brooks (Meldrum House) made it through comfortably with scores of 78 and 73 for 151

Marchbank is third Scot in quarter-finals

McDonald plays Forrest for place in

semi-finals at Carnoustie

RandA NEWS RELEASE
Craigielaw's Grant Forrest continued his impressive form in the 120th Amateur Championship at Carnoustie today with a convincing 4 and 3 victory over England’s Ashley Chesters to reach the quarter-Finals.
Forrest, a former Scottish Amateur champion, was four up after five holes against the two-time European Amateur Champion. Birdies on the 10th and 11th holes gave Forrest, who will celebrate his 22nd birthday tomorrow, a decisive lead in the match
Forrest now plays fellow Scot Greig Marchbank (Thornhill) on Friday morning for a place in the afternoon semi-finals.

France enjoyed an excellent day with four players reaching the round of the last eight.
Alexandre Daydou held his nerve in a close match against Iceland’s Andri Bjornsson. The Italian International Amateur Champion won four consecutive holes from the 11th to take control of the match and he eased to a 2 and 1 win to secure his place in the last eight.

Daydou, who is making his third appearance in the Amateur Championship, will be joined by Antoine Rozner, who took a grip of his all-French match against Paul Barjon with birdies on the 12th and the 14th holes and sealed a 3 and 2 win, and Romain Langasque who defeated Sweden’s Adam Blomme by two holes. Robin Sciot-Siegrist rounded off the day with a 3 and 2 win in the final match against Alejandro Tosti from Argentina.

The all-Scottish affair between Jack McDonald, the 2012 Amateur Championship semi-finalist, and Glencruitten’s Robert MacIntyre was won 4 and 3 by McDonald, a 22-year-old from Kilmarnock (Barassie).
Scottish interest in the quarter-finals was further boosted by Greig Marchbank’s 2 and 1 win over Finland’s Miki Kuronen.

England’s Sean Towndrow, who lost in the Semi-Finals of last year’s Amateur Championship, was three down to  Poland’s Mateusz Gradecki by the 7th hole but clawed his way back into the match, winning the 15th and 16th holes to win by one hole.

Key quotes
Grant Forrest

“I knew it was going to be a tough game. Fortunately he let me get a nice little lead to be four up after five. Then he got a couple back but I made a couple of good putts on the 10th and the 11th to get to five up and then it was a case of hanging on after that.
“I have been playing solid golf. It was a little bit scrappy today but I managed to score which is always good. I got beat in the last 16 two years ago so it’s great to get through to the Quarter-Finals. This is the biggest event we play in the summer and so I have just got to keep doing my thing and see what happens.”

Alexandre Daydou
“I won the 11th to be all square, the 12th to be one up, the 13th to be two up and the 14th to be three up so that was really the key to the game today.

“My putting has been very good this week in all of my rounds and through the match play. I have played very well. I am just playing all of my matches 100% so let’s see what happens.”

Sean Towndrow

“I played really well early doors and even though I was three down after seven holes I just felt like I needed to stay in there as I knew I still had a chance in the match.

“I have been drawing on last year a lot. I feel like I have a lot more experience and will just keep grinding and see how I do. Getting the bronze medal last year made it very worthwhile.”

Double European senior triumph for Clive Jones
England’s Clive Jones has just won the European senior men’s championship for the second year in a row, claiming the title by an impressive six shots.
He won the 2014 championship in Spain on his senior debut and has just retained the title at Pannonia in Hungary, where Stephen East, a fellow England senior international, was joint runner-up.
“It was fantastic to retain the title with such a good field and to experience the sportsmanship from each and every player,” said Jones, who is based in Toulouse, France.
He added: “Winning last year was not only unexpected and a bit of a shock, but it has opened up a whole new life of golf for me. I have met some old friends and made a lot of new ones. Playing for England last year was the most thrilling experience I have had since starting golf over 50 years ago.”
Jones describes his latest win as emotional, for two reasons: “Firstly, I had been out of golf for three months after an injury in February and secondly my poor performance at the English Open at West Hill and Worplesdon the week before. Finishing with a final round of 80 really dented my confidence so I was not feeling particularly happy coming into the European championship.”
However, he made the perfect start with a two-under par 70 opening round. On the second day he felt he was struggling to put the ball anywhere near the hole but a score of 73 meant he stayed in the hunt.
The final round started well but went downhill when Jones bogeyed the last four holes of the front nine. The 10th, however, proved a turning point: “My second shot really made my day. I was fortunate to run through the fairway bunker off a hooked tee-shot but the ball was lying poorly with my feet below the ball. I managed to hit the green with a six- iron and was close enough to almost make a birdie.”
After that he played in solidly, with good ball striking, and signed for a final round 74 and a 54-hole total of one over par.
Jones started playing as a child in Sussex, mostly at Nevill Golf Club. After some success, including a win as an amateur in the Sussex Open, he qualified for the European Tour in 1981.
“I set off to South Africa on the Sunshine Tour and have some wonderful memories of the two months I spent there. I met Gary Player, had a short chat with Bernhard Langer on putting, played a few rounds with David Frost, who was rookie of the year, and hit golf balls on the same practice ground as some of the great players at that time. Fond memories indeed.”
Before long, though, he realised the professional life was not for him and, signing off with another win in the Sussex Open, he returned to amateur ranks and a career in the building trade. Later, a desire for a new way of life took him to France where he has now settled with his wife Christine – also his caddie! – and their two children.

Aberdeen Links Championship Semi-final results

DEREK JOHNSTONE REPORTS

Friday’s evening’s Links Championship Final will be contested by three times  champion Barrie Edmond of the Bon Accord and Northern club champion Liam Minty.

Edmond, title-winner in 2010, 2012 and 2013, birdied the first and third to take an early lead over Royal Aberdeen Medal winner, Ron Evett. In a low scoring match, parity was eventually assumed when Evett parred the 11th and birdied the 12th.
The 13th was halved in birdie before Edmond won the difficult 14th in par and 17with a birdie for a hard fought 2 and 1 victory.

In the other semi-final, Minty who disposed of former champion Stewart Finnie in the quarter-finals, soon settled into his rhythm and after seven holes was four up on Matty Greig of the Bon Accord.  Although Greig pulled one back with a par on ten, Minty closed the match by birdieing 12 and parring 14 for a 5 and 5 win.

The Handicap Shield Final will be an all-Northern affair, with clubmates Graeme Robertson and Walter Rae going head-to head.  Robertson seemed to be cruising to victory when he found himself dormie five up.
However, Levi Ross had other ideas and successive wins at 14, 15 and 16 significantly reduced the deficit.  A half in par on 17 was enough to settle Robertson’s fraying nerves and give him a 2 and 1 win.

Murray Cup defending champion, 13 year old Brook Smith, continued his ambition of retaining the trophy when beating the Northern’s Benny Lumsden 2 and 1.  In a tight match, Smith won the 6th and 9th to lead by two at the turn.
Lumsden quickly pulled one back with a par on ten and this slender advantage was maintained until the sixteenth. Having missed right, a great up and down by Smith for par was not matched by his opponent giving him a two hole advantage and a resultant 2 and 1 victory.

Smith will play Caledonian clubmate Doug McPherson in the final.. McPherson, six up after seven, ran out a comfortable 5 and 4 winner over Alan Pirie of the Northern.
