British Amateur Championship in Angus

Alfied Plant lowers Panmure record with a

seven-under 63 in first qualifying round

FROM THE R and A WEBSITE
England’s Alfie Plant stormed to the first-round lead in the Amateur Championship today with a course record-breaking,seven-under-par 63 at Panmure.
He shaved two shots off the previous mark of 65 held by several players.
The 22-year-old got off to a great start  by birdieing his first two holes before watching his seven-iron approach to the par 4
third hole find the bottom of the cup for an eagle 2. Remarkably, Plant repeated the feat at the par-410th where his six-iron approach also found the hole for an eagle 2.
The Sundridge Park and England national squad golfer also birdied the seventh and ninth holes. His only dropped shot came at the sixth
“It was a bit mental at the start. I birdied the first two and holed out on three for eagle, had a couple of birdies after that and then holed out on ten for eagle again,” he said.
“To see them drop was a good feeling. One went in and it was nice but to see the second one go in was a bit bizarre but I will take it.
“I’m really pleased. It’s my first course record and my personal best round as well so it’s been a really good day.
"People go low in the first round and find it hard to back it up in the second round. Hopefully I can do the same again tomorrow or, if not, just be nice and steady and get into the match play round.
Plant leads by two from Craigielaw’s Grant Forrest and New Zealander Ryan Chisnall, who both posted  five-under-par 67’s at Carnoustie.
The 21-year-old Scot made the most of the benign conditions to card seven birdies around the challenging Angus links with his only wobble coming with dropped shots at the eighth and ninth holes.
The Craigielaw golfer, who won the 2014 St Andrews Links Trophy and was a member of the winning Great Britain and Ireland St Andrews Trophy team last year, gave himself an excellent platform for tomorrow’s second stroke play round at nearby Panmure.
“My putting was the key today. I had three 20 or 25 footers and a couple of 15 footers and I didn’t miss anything from six feet.
"I drove it well too and made the par fives more like par fours. Driving it well on a course like this is a big help,” he said.
Chisnall carded six birdies with a solitary dropped shot on the 5th hole. The 20-year-old, who won the South Island stroke-play championship in his native country last year, was pleased with his opening round.
He said, “It’s one of the better rounds I’ve had in a while, I’ve been in the UK for three weeks now and this is the best weather we have had so took advantage of that and didn’t have to fight my way around the golf course.
" I holed a few putts but anytime you shoot under par on a golf course like this you are happy.  I’m pretty much over the moon so will go home and have a rest and hopefully continue that tomorrow.
“This is the biggest event I have ever played in so making the match play is the goal and then I will take it from there.”
One shot further back was Ireland’s Jack Hume, who eagled the 12th at Carnoustie on his way to a four-under-par 68.
The 22-year-old from Naas, who, along with Forrest, was named in the initial 20-man squad for the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team to face the USA in September, also managed five birdies and three bogeys in an eventful round.
“I’m very happy with one-over through eight holes and five-under-par for the last ten,” he said. “I had a strange start, birdie, bogey, birdie but hit some nice iron shots and can hopefully carry that on tomorrow.  It’s meant to be windy tomorrow so it was definitely a scoring day today.  I have had a consistent season so far, so I’m hoping for a win or two over the rest of the season.”
A clutch of players finished on three-under-par, including Englishmen Ashton Turner, Jimmy Mullen, Leon Fricker and Harry Hall. Playing at Carnoustie, Fricker, from Yelverton, was clearly inspired by his surroundings as he enjoyed a remarkable finish with six consecutive threes, including an eagle at the par five 14th.
“I played really well and felt very comfortable on the course,” he said. “I love this course and want to play it as much as I can. I watched The Open in 2007 when I was 13 and it inspired me to play.”
Hall also had an eagle on his card, at the par five second at Panmure, and, despite a dropped shot on the last, the 17-year-old from West Cornwall is well placed going into tomorrow’s second round.
“I started well and made a nice eagle on the second. I felt like I was in the tournament after looking at the scores before the round. I was steady for the rest of the round and made my first five on the last hole. That was a bit disappointing but I am looking forward to tomorrow.”
A field of 288 players, representing 30 different countries, will play two qualifying rounds of stroke play at both Carnoustie and Panmure before the leading 64 and ties take part in the match play stages at Carnoustie. The 36-hole final will be played on Saturday.
The second stroke play round gets underway at 7am tomorrow. For live scoring from the championship please click here

Home win for young Renfrewshire team

RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION  PRESS RELEASE

With a number of regular players involved in other tournaments, Renfrewshire Golf Union had to select four boys who had never represented the county previously for the home game at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club.

The first of those, Jack Crawford from Mearns Castle, was three down with three to play and showed great courage and skill to fight back for a halved game.
Elderslie’s Jorg Irving then put points on the board with a solid two hole win and Fraser Lawrie (Lochwinnoch) showed no first time nerves as he overcame Strathendrick’s David Hood 5 and 4.

With one of the team not showing up, due to travel problems, giving a walk over to Stirlingshire, the performance of the new recruits eased the worries of the management team and these were further dispelled as the more regular team members did what was required.  A special mention for Tom Mackenzie of East Renfrewshire who is unbeaten this season and for Darragh Cuddihy who beat Stirlingshire’s top player comfortably.

With an away draw and a win already achieved, Renfrewshire is starting to have aspirations of the West of Scotland title and will entertain Ayrshire at Greenock on July 5.
RESULTS
 Renfrewshire 5.5, Stirlingshire 2.5
Jack Crawford (Mearns Castle) halved with Tyler Morgan (Falkirk)

Tom MacKenzie (East Renfrewshire) bt Gregor Johnston (Bridge of Allan) 4 and 3

Jorg Irving (Elderslie) bt Max Miller (Falkirk Tryst) 2 holes

Fraser Lawrie (Lochwinnoch) bt David Hood (Strathendrick) 5and 4

Alistair McNaughton (Caldwell) bt Fraser Laird (Glenbervie) 3 and 1

Cameron Jones (Greenock) lost to Stuart Murray (Falkirk) 4 and 2

Darragh Cuddihy (Gourock) bt Calun Bauchop (Glenbervie) 3 and 2

+Renfrewshire conceded a walk-over to Stirlingshire in the remaining match between two un-named players. The Renfrewshire player could not play because of travel problems.

Chris Robb trails Scottish colleagues in

Germany after two double bogeys

Last year's Scottish amateur champion Chris Robb (Meldrum House) does not often find himself trailing his fellow-Scots on the German PGA Developmental Tour but that's the cast after two rounds of the Ceevel Leather Open at Glashofen-Neusass Golf Club, Germany.
Banchory-based Robb has had a double bogey each round in returning two 74s for four-over-par 148. He is lying joint 36th with a round to go, 11 shots behind the German leader, Benedict Staben who has scored 678-70 for seven-under 137 and a two-shot lead.
Peterhead's Philip McLean (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) is the leadign Scot in joint 28th place alongside Ted Innes-Ker.
McLean has scored 75 (33-42) and 72 (39-33) for 147, the same tally as the Duke of Roxburghe's son who has had two steady rounds of 73-74.

Jimmy Gunn called into US Open  field

Dornoch exile Jimmy Gunn will play in the United States Open at Chambers Bay this week. He is one of four reserves called up into the championship at short notice.
Gunn, 34, was the first alternate from the Memphis, Tennessee qualifying tournament. He will be making his debut in the US Open.
Gunn, pictured, a part-time joiner, caddied at Royal Dornoch and was the leading amateur in the Northern Open at Skibo Castle in 2007 before turning professional and moving to America where he set up his base at Scottsdale, Arizona and played several mini-tours.
He now plays primarily on the eGolf Gateway Tour.

Gunn has become the fifth Scot to qualify for this week’s US Open at Chambers Bay.
He joins Stephen Gallacher, Colin Montgomerie, Bradley Neil and Marc Warren in the Washington field for Thursday’s tee off at the links-style venue. Gunn said on Twitter: “Just got the call in the US Open 2015. Pumped!”
Gallacher and Warren qualified by virtue of their placing in the top 60 of the world rankings.
Blairgowrie’s Neil won The Amateur Championship last year, while Montgomerie joins the US Open field for the first time in seven years, thanks to his victory in the 2014 US Senior Open.
“I’m looking forward to further experience of a Major Championship,” said Neil, 19, who played in last year’s Open at Hoylake and April’s Masters at Augusta National. “It’s a world-class field and you can only learn at this level.”
Gunn moved to the United States in 2007 to turn professional after funding his amateur career by working as a caddie at Royal Dornoch and as a carpenter.
Gunn finished 11th in the US Open qualifier at Germantown Country Club & Ridgeway Country Club, Memphis, a stroke behind two-time US Open champion Retief Goosen, Andres Romero and amateur Davis Riley.
Fellow US-based Scots Russell Knox and Martin Laird failed to qualify for this year’s US Open, despite Knox posting another strong finish - tied eighth - on the US PGA Tour on Sunday.

First US PGA Tour win for Fabian Gomez

 FROM THE GOLF CHANNEL
Phil Mickelson made a run at the title, but it was the 288th player in the world who took home the trophy at the FedEx St. Jude Classic on Sunday.
Here’s the lowdown from the final round in Memphis.
Leaderboard: Fabian Gomez (-13) pictured above, England's Greg Owen (-9), Phil Mickelson (-8), Brooks Koepka (-8), Seung-Yul Noh (-8), Matt Jones (-8), Michael Thompson (-8)
What it means: Owen and Gomez started the day tied for the lead, but it was Owen who jumped out to a two-shot lead with birdies at Nos. 3 and 7. He dropped back after bogeys at 9, 12 and 14, and Argentina-born Gomez took over with three back-nine birdies, including a 30-foot bomb on 18 to close out in style.
He now has his first US PGA Tour title, worth over a million dollars in prizemoney, and all the perks that go with it. Gomez secured his card through the 2016-17 seasons, he has a spot in this year’s Quicken Loans National and the PGA Championship, and he also gets an invite to the 2016 Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, the Masters and Players Championship.
Round of the day: Mickelson (T-3), Noh (T-3), Billy Horschel (T-8), Boo Weekley (T-8) and Will Wilcox (T-12) all tied for low round of the day with 5-under 65s.
Mickelson gained some momentum heading into the U.S. Open with eight birdies against three bogeys, including a 25-foot birdie on 18 that spun around the hole before dropping in.
Best of the restNoh was bogey-free in his final-round 65, and it came at a good time. Since a T-38 at the Masters, Noh has gone Cut-WD-Cut-Cut.
Biggest disappointmentAlready with a win this season in Phoenix, Koepka had a great chance to add win No. 2 to his resume, but he was undone by bogeys at 9 and 12 and then a double bogey at the par-3 14th. He closed with birdies on two of his last four holes for a share of third.
Quote of the Day: “There’s a lot of different ways to play shots to a lot of different pins, and if you play the highest percentage shot it’s not a hard golf course, but if you don’t know what that shot is and you play the wrong one, there’s a lot of penalty there.” – Mickelson on Chambers Bay
