Four share PGA Seniors Championship lead

PGA NEWS RELEASE
In-form Australian Peter Fowler picked up where he left off in Jersey as he galloped to a share of the lead with English duo Carl Mason and Gary Emerson and France’s Jean Pierre Sallat at the ISPS HANDA PGA Seniors Championship.
Fowler, fresh from his victory in the Channel Islands last week, carded a flawless three-under-par 68 over the Lee Westwood Colt Course at Close House to put another marker down.
Emerson, seeking his first Senior Tour victory, joined the Antipodean shortly afterwards before Mason, a three-time winner of the championship and the Tour’s most decorated player, and Sallat joined them late in the afternoon after a sun-kissed summer’s day in Northumberland.
Fowler, who celebrated his 56th birthday, opened his bid for back-to-back victories with a birdie on the par-five first, his only net gain on the front nine, before adding to his tally at the par four 14th and par five 16th
“You can’t tweak every course, but the way it is set up is really good here,” he said.
“I started well. I had a really good drive off the first, that ran up a long way and then I hit a five iron to two foot for a birdie. You settle in to the round quicker after a start like that. I had a couple of birdies towards the end to finish nicely. I had a couple of long putts but managed to get par on them.
“On the 18th I was 100ft away which is always a bit dodgy on any hole, so it was hard to get close to ten foot from that range. But it was nice to finish with a par from there because it will cause problems.”
Emerson, starting on the 10th, opened his round with a birdie on the 11th and added another at the 16th which cancelled out the bogey on 14 to turn in 34.
His back nine was much more productive with birdies at the first, sixth and eighth with the only blot coming at the fifth for his 68.
“I played poorly last week, my attitude wasn’t very good, this week hopefully I can carry on like I started today,” he said.
“I’ve just got to keep doing what I’ve been doing and see where I end up. If I get a chance at the end of the week then all well and good.
“It’s a very tricky course, in very good condition, and a lot of patience is needed. I’m pleased as I played solid and putted a lot better than I did last week.
“I just tried to play fairly conservatively and just get the ball into position and try and get somewhere on the green and then walk to the next.”
Mason got off to a flyer with three birdies in his first four holes. His progress was checked with a bogey at the sixth but he added another birdie at the eight to be three-under at the turn.
He slipped back with another dropped shot at the 13, but coolly slotted home a birdie on the difficult 18th to cap a fine start to the week.
“I didn’t know what to expect really as I’ve only played the course in the pro-am and luckily I remembered where I should hit it and where not to hit it and got off to a great start,” said Mason, a winner of 25 European Senior Tour titles.
“I holed some nice putts – three in a row – and I was three-under after four which was a shock, a nice shock. I hit it steady all the way through and I was pleased with that.
“That’s a tough hole (the 18th). You can hit a good shot there and go through the green and I was making sure I didn’t go through. It’s just a good finishing hole, a good tough par three and the birdie was nice to finish.”

Brilliant Bourdy blasts into Austrian lead
Bourdy leads by two after 69 at Lyoness Open

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Grégory Bourdy’s magnificent seven under par 65 saw the Frenchman sail into the first-round lead of the Lyoness Open powered by Greenfinity.
The 33 year old’s brilliance over the Diamond Country Club ensured a two-stroke lead over Spain’s Carlos Del Moral, the English duo of Rob Dinwiddie and Chris Wood, and Germany’s Max Kieffer who all carded first round scores of five under.
Two birdies in his opening two holes gave Bourdy the effect start to his day and the resulting surge in confidence inspired his flawless first round score as he added a further five birdies and not a single dropped shot.
While Bourdy and the rest of the first round’s best performers left the Diamond Country Club satisfied with a good day’s work, Austria’s Number One and tournament favourite Bernd Wiesberger had a day to forget as he posted a seven over par 79.

Player Quotes

Grégory Bourdy – 65 (-7): “It was a lovely day today. I played very solid and started well with two birdies in the first two holes and that always helps when you make such a confident start and something you need when you are going to have a day like I had today
“I knew that I could do well at this golf course because I have played very well here in the past and it always helps when you have good memories of a certain golf course. I have been playing well this year with some decent results. I wasn’t happy with the results I had in Wentworth and Ireland because I was full of confidence but didn’t finish well, so coming here and making a good start is even more satisfying.”

Max Kieffer – 67 (-5): “It’s awesome to be here and playing in these warm and perfect conditions. The last few weeks have been really tough with a lot of cold and wind which really makes the game so much more difficult. But today was so much more relaxed and I was able to play well in these great conditions. I have been playing well recently so was quite confident coming into this week.
“I love playing in Austria and especially here at this golf course because it reminds me of a lot of the courses in Germany and where I grew up. The course is in great shape too and that helps a lot.”

Chris Wood – 67 (-5):  “It was a solid score. The conditions were perfect this morning but I have to say that after the conditions we have been playing in for the last three weeks it is great to come somewhere hot and where you can shoot a few under if you play well.
“I am glad I took the week off last week because after playing in Spain, Wentworth and particularly Ireland it was really tough and I needed a bit of a break. Three weeks in a row is probably my limit so it was nice to get six days off at home and get fresh for this week. I gave myself lots of chances today so it was an enjoyable day out there – I am looking forward to the rest of the week now.”

Robert Dinwiddie – 67 (-5): “That was very satisfying. I got off to a good start and managed to stay positive and make a few more birdies coming in so it was a great day. I am slowly making my way back from the injury but it has been a long time.
“I ruptured a disk in my lower back in April last year which then affected the nerve all the way down my leg. The doctors recommended I take some time out and thankfully I didn’t need an operation but it wasn’t until November that I was able to hit balls again so it was a long break but looking back on it I probably needed a break from the game.
“It feels much better now than it has for about five years so it’s all positive apart from all the boring stretching I have to do – I spend about half the night on my hotel room floor trying to get the back in good shape! But that is what I need to do to be able to play so I need to accept that and be grateful for what I have. It’s all worth it when you shoot scores like I did today and hopefully I can keep it going for the rest of the week.”

Carlos Del Moral – 67 (-5): “I understood the course a little bit better this time around and 67 is a great score. It was perfect conditions today but because the course is very firm so you have to work hard to keep the ball in the right places. I played very well today and putted well too so it was great start to the week for me. I have made a few changes with a new coach and new equipment this year and it is starting to have a positive effect – there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel!”

Bernd Wiesberger – 79 (+7): “I can’t explain what happened today to be honest with you. There were so many bad shots that I am still not really sure what happened out there. I haven’t played that catastrophically for at least ten years.”

WRIGHT v KELLY FOR NORTHERN OPEN TITLE

Gareth Wright and Chris Kelly have forged four shots clear of the field with one round to play in the Northern Open golf championship after another balmy day at Cruden Bay.
Wright shot a 67 for eight-under-par 210, a 54-hole tally matched by Gleneagles Scottish professional champion Kelly, also with a 67.
Both men dropped a shot late in their rounds, PGA pro championship runner-up Wright at the 16th and Kelly at the 18th.
Earlier Wright had birdied the third, sixth, ninth, 11th and 12th, bogeying the 10th in halves of 33-34.
Kelly's bag of birdies amounted to six, one more than his Welsh rival, as he had gains at the third, sixth, 10th, 11th, 15th and 17th but he also made more mistakes than Wright, bogeying the eighth and ninth apart from the 18th.
It looks a straight fight between Wright and Kelly for the £4,250 first prize and victory in a tournament that was first played in the 1930s.
QUOTES:
Gareth Wright: "I have been playing well all week. I am just trying to play steady links golf and find the fairways.
“This is the first time I have played Cruden Bay but the weather was idyllic for the third round so there were chances to make birdies.
“Hopefully I can keep doing what I am doing.”
Chris Kelly: I played a lot better than 67 but you just have to take the rough with the smooth."
Carluke's Craig Ronald, who is proud of the fact that he played football at Hampden Park in his youth, showed the low scoring potential on a windless day with a bogey-free, four-under 66 which elevated him into third place, albeit four shots off the pace.
Ronald is a shot ahead of thee men sharing fourth place on 207 - Robert Arnott (Bishopbriggs) (67), Scott Henderson (Kings Links) (68) and Michael Patterson (Kilmacolm) (68).
Moray Golf Club member Kyle Godsman, who lives at Hopeman and spent four years on the US college circuit as a student at the University of Sout Carolina-Aiken, is favourite to collect the Bookless Cup which does to the leading amateur.
Godsman, whose ambition is to play for Scotland in the home internationals, shot a third-round 70 for level par 210 and a share of 10th place over all. His leading rival local member John Goodward returned a 75 for 215

Nick Robson leads the West of Scotland Seniors Open at Cardross

REPORT BY GORDON THOMSON
Nick Robson (Meldrum House) is the first round leader of West of Scotland Seniors Open at Cardross with a fine score of 69.
Nick made an explosive start to stand five under par after four holes and was slightly disappointed to finish at two under par. He holds a one stroke lead over former Scottish Seniors Champion, Lindsay Blair (Grangemouth ) on 70.
Paul Moultrie (Royal Troon) and Keith Reilly (Silverknowes), who sit first and second respectively in the Order of Merit, are a further stroke back on 71

Bob Stewart (Tulliallan), who is defending the title and won at Downfield last week, is on 72 and will be hoping to mount a charge tomorrow along with John Gullen (Tillicoultry ) and former internationalist, George Crawford (Williamwood) who are on the same mark.

An exciting day’s play is in prospect tomorrow (Friday) at Cardross which is in fine condition and presented an excellent test for the high quality field.

The CSS of the day was 73  for the par 71 course
