Northern Open has crowded leaderboard at end of Day 1

SCOTT COULD BE GREAT AGAIN IN WIND BLOWS AT CRUDEN BAY

Scott Henderson knows what it takes to win a Northern Open at Cruden Bay - he's done it before and in a howling gale on the last day to boot!
So the Aberdonian, although a bit longer in the tooth these days, is well pleased that there is no one ahead of him after the first day of this year's 72-hole championship at the Buchan links in the shadow of Slains Castle. The PGA in Scotlad prizefund for the unsponsored event is £32,500
In fact there's a logjam at the top of the leaderboard with Henderson only one of five men sharing the pole position on two-under-par 68. The others are Paul Shields (Kirkhill), Lossiemouth amateur Kyle Godsman, Paul Robinson (Largs) and Gareth Wright (West Linton), who finished joint second in the PGA professional championship last week.
There are another six players breathing down the leaders' necks on 69 - Robert Arnott (Bishopbriggs), Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf), Colin Robinson (Elie Links), Greg Paxton (Ralston), Gleneagles Scottish pro champion Chris Kelly (unattached) and Tartan Tour No 1 Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre)
At this stage of the four-round tournament, it would take a brave punter to put his money on his selection to be first past the winnng post.
It might need the return of the high winds that swept the country last week and at the weekend to sort out this Grand National cavalry charge of a leaderboard.
And could you blame Scott Henderson for wishing the gales would return to help him sort them all again down the home straight as he did a few years back.

Chris Mailley wins Sutherland Championship  for fourth time

By ROBIN WILSON
Chris Mailley, added his name to the impressive Sutherland Championship trophy for a fourth time at Brora on Saturday.

Mailley, a plus three handicap golfer and also a member at Brora where he is the reigning club champion, played his best golf through the first round gale force conditions after halves of 33 and 36 for a one under par 69 to take a three shot lead over former triple champion Roddie Cameron (Brora) (34/38).  Mailley's outward 33 card was compiled from seven par figures and two birdies, the short 6th and long eighth holes.

Golspie born Cameron collected his first of three winner's silver medals at Golspie nine years before Mailley's first win. His compact 72 arrived from a three birdie first nine hole count of 34 and a three over par inward half of 38 to place him one shot ahead of his now Brora club mate and course greenkeeper James MacBeath. MacBeath still holds the record low winning aggregate of 134 (65/69) when he won his title at Brora in 2003 and registering a first round 73 (35/38) on Saturday.

Other first round scores from former champions in the field included the Royal Dornoch trio of David Pearson 76 (37/39), Alex MacDonald 76 (34/42) and Kevin Matheson 77 (38/39). The only left handed golfer to lift the cup, defending champion Darren Hexley (Golspie) began with a disappointing 78 (36/42).  Still in the mix for a first a first time win were Dornoch's Craig Sutherland 74  (35/39) and Neil Munro 75 (37/38) and Brora's Robert MacDonald 75 (36/39).

With no abatement to the wind for the second round Mailley repeated his outward count of 33 with his birdies arriving at the fourth hole and then again at the 8th hole.  After his first bogey at the tenth he birdied the second par five 11th hole to restore his card to two under par which he maintained until the remaining four holes where most Brora scores are lost.  His lapses began at the 15th with bogey five then after overshooting the seventeenth green he took another four shots to hole out in six and with a collapse at this point at Brora it always continues to the final par three hole where the mandatory bogey four is recorded.

Mailley's signed card read 72 (33/39) but a more than safe 36 hole aggregate of 141 when Cameron slipped back to fourth place with a 78 to allow MacBeath win a sixth runner's up bronze medal with a repeat 73.  Neil Munro excelled with his putter both on and off the greens  to record a second round72  (35/37) and climb into third place on 147.

Leading scratch scores (CSS 70 both rounds)
141 C Mailley (RDGC) 69/72. 146 J G MacBeath (Brora) (73/73). 147 N Munro (RDGC) (75/72). 149 R N MacDonald (Brora) (75/74). 150 R S Cameron (Brora) (72/78). 154 K Matheson (RDGC) (77/77), D Pearson (RDGC) (76/78), A MacDonald (RDGC) (76/78). 155 D Hexley (Golspie) (79/76). Nett Scores -  N Munro (RDGC) (3) 141 (72/69),  R N MacDonald (Brora) (4).971/70).  A Dunn (Brora) (9) 142  (72/70). D Norrie (Brora) (9) 144 (67/77).

Darren Howie, Emma Morrison top of the Class in PLF Scottish Schools championship

Darren Howie (Borders) and Emma Morrison (Edinburgh) finished top of the class in the boys' and girls' sections of the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish schools golf championships over the two courses at Murrayshall Hotel near Perth.
Howie shot 72-67 for a two-under-par total of 139 over the  main courese (par 72) and the par 68 Lynedoch lay-out. He topped the boys' returns by two shots from Rory Franssen (Highland) (73-68 for 141) with Bathgate's Joe Bryce (West Lothian) in third place on 142 (75-67).
The boys' team title went north in the hands of the Highland pair, Rory Franssen (Inverness) and Nairn's Sandy Scott (77-67 for 144).
And so it proved a productive 48 hours for the Howie clan from Peebles
Craig, the 2012 Scottish Boys champion, shared third in Sunday's St Andrews Links Trophy before younger brother Darren claimed victory at the  Perthshire venue..
Howie posted a two under par winning total in the Paul Lawrie-sponsored event, two strokes clear of
The Lothians’ Emma Morrison took the girls’ scratch prize with an aggregate of 145 (71-74), one ahead of Deeside's Lauren Watson (Aberdeen City) (69-77 for 146) and two in front of third-placed Shannon McWilliam (South Aberdeenshire) (71-76 for 147.
Shannon, who will play for GB and I in the Junior Vagliano Trophy match at Malone GC, Belfast the week after next, was the defending champion.
Lauren Watson secured the girls' handicap titlen and partnered Hazlehead's Jasmine MacKintosh, shortly to make her county debut for the Aberdeenshire women's team,  to success in the girls’ team title  for Aberdeen City.
On a day that produced fine golf, with Lawrie enjoying some of the action, there were remarkably two holes in one recorded.
Highland's Finlay Asher from Nairn struck the first of the day at the 18th (Murrayshall course) in his morning round and Robert Watson (Clackmannanshire) had his on the 6th (Lynedoch) in the afternoon.

The youngsters also enjoyed seeing the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open trophy, which was on show in the clubhouse during the day.
