Richie Ramsay three off Irish Open lead
EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Søren Kjeldsen will take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory Foundation – hoping that a little bit of local knowledge will see him claim his fourth European Tour title.
The 40 year old carded a third-round 67 in testing conditions on the majestic Royal County Down Links at Newcastle, Northern Ireland for a seven under par total of 206 to move clear of Germany’s Max Kieffer, whose six under par 65 set a new course record for the revered links of Royal County Down, and Spain’s Rafa Cabrera-Bello who posted a 69.
Three players – England’s Tyrrell Hatton, Aberdeen’s Richie Ramsay and Bernd Wiesberger of Austria shared fourth place on four under par 209 after all carding 70s, but the man they all have to catch is Kjeldsen, who exhibited the same kind of consistency which saw him finish in the top 70 on The European Tour for 15 consecutive seasons between 1999 and 2013.
The diminutive Dane is staying with friends from the County Down area this week and revealed he had played the golf course in the past when on a social visit.

“Although some of the lines obviously change for a tournament set-up, I did remember quite a bit of the golf course when I got back here this week. It’s definitely helped,” he said.
Kjeldsen’s lead could have been even greater had he not dropped shots at both the closing holes, but in the demanding winds they proved to be two of the toughest tests on the entire golf course
Nowhere was that more conclusively proved than by American Rickie Fowler who was within sight of the lead entering the stretch at two under par, but ended it way down the field on five over after finishing with two eights – a quadruple bogey at the 17th and a triple bogey at the last.
For Kjeldsen, however, everything else was flawless as he carded six birdies without loss in the first 16 holes of his round, including three in a row from the 11th.
Player Quotes:
Søren Kjeldsen (69-70-67 = 206 -7)
“It was a great day from me.  I played terrific all day, and you know, the two bogeys, I hit a bad tee shot on 17.  After that I played the hole really well and 18, I thought I played that beautifully and made six.  It was so windy.  I'll focus on the first 16 holes because I played beautifully and didn't do much wrong on the last two, so I feel good. I can only control what I do and I'm going to head to the range and hit a few shots and do my thing and I'll come out hopefully doing the same thing tomorrow.

Max Kieffer (67-76-65 = 208 -5)
“I played quite a lot on links as an amateur but on The European Tour, we don't play that much.  But I enjoy it. You need to think a little bit about it and it's nice to have something different from every other week. The crowds are great and it's great fun to play in front of them on a great golf course. I think it's going to be a very fun, challenging day tomorrow.”
Rafa Cabrera-Bello (71-68-69 = 208 -5)

“I know that when I’m on my game, I can play really well. Even though my scores were not happening throughout the year, I do feel I've been playing well and hitting the ball well. So I was excited to be here.  I've really enjoyed it and hopefully I’ll keep enjoying it tomorrow.”

Darren Wright wins £10,000 prize at Burhill
PGA EUROPRO TOUR NEWS RELEASE
By Nick Teale
Darren Wright shot a level-par final round to win the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s Kerry London Championship at Burhill Golf Club by one stroke from Ireland’s Alan Dunbar.

Wright led by two overnight and was five clear early in the final round as playing partner Dunbar (Team Ireland) faltered and Wright birdied four and five on Burhill’s New Course.

That early advantage soon evaporated though as Wright (Golf at Goodwood) dropped shots at six, eight and 13 while Craig Farrelly (TPS) moved to five under the card with an eagle at the 11th to join Dunbar, who had birdied nine and ten and 13, at the top of the leaderboard.

Farrelly slipped two back after bogeys at 15 and 16 and finished the tournament in third, seven-under-par with a final-round 69 on the par-72 course.

Wright rejoined Dunbar at nine under with a birdie at 16 and the Irishman dropped out of a share of the lead when he bogeyed the 17th.

Both parred the last leaving Wright to collect the trophy, a cheque for £10,000 plus a brand new Motocaddy trolley with lithium battery, Bushnell Tour X range finder, Bolle sunglasses and £500 to spend at HotelPlanner.com

“I was pretty confident at the start of the day,” said Wright. “I have been playing really good golf and making a lot of birdies, the odd eagle, and have been putting really well this week. On these greens, they are such a pure surface, if you get it starting on line you have a good chance to hole some putts.

"Today the putts weren’t really dropping but I holed some important ones at the end. You see a lot of guys who get that one win and then they are off; you have seen it with Gary King over the last two weeks. Hopefully I can follow this up with some more decent results.

“Once you get over the line and win your first big event it hopefully makes it a bit easier.”

Highlights of the Kerry London Championship will be broadcast on Sky Sports on Tuesday, June 9.
The next HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour event is the Dawson and Sanderson Foreign Exchange Classic at Longhirst Hall Golf Club, commencing this Thursday, June 4.

Woosie, Wesselingh level in Welsh Senior Open

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Ian Woosnam wore the steely look of a gladiator as he conquered the Roman Road course with a best-of-the week 66 to march purposefully into contention for his first title on Welsh soil for 32 years and a transatlantic double in the space of a month.
The former Masters Champion is seeking to build on his first Senior victory in the United States three weeks ago by capturing the SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open at The Celtic Manor Resort, the famous venue which he used to represent as touring professional and which is supporting this tournament along with the Welsh Government.
Woosnam goes into the final day level with England’s Paul Wesselingh on 136, four under par, after the 2013 Senior Tour Order of Merit winner delivered an impressive riposte to the Welshman’s 66 with a three under par 67, tarnished slightly by a bogey at the last.
Wesselingh, as Woosnam pointed out, will be a doughty opponent in the final group, but acknowledged that victory tomorrow would banish the blues caused by several close calls on both The European Tour and the Senior Tour since his 1983 victory in his homeland at St Pierre in Chepstow.
“I am very happy to be in touch going into the last day. I’ve struggled a bit with the driver but scored quite well, which helps a lot” he said. “It was pretty steady stuff, five birdies and a three putt at the sixth. The course is playing pretty well and hopefully I can throw in a low round again tomorrow.”
The 57 year old Welshman is banking on his stamina holding out after a run of 10 events in 12 weeks. “Paul is a very good putter and a strong competitor," he said. "I played with him in the third round of the Senior PGA in America so I know he can work his way round a golf course.”
Fifteen years ago, Woosnam was also in the final group of the Wales Open but was edged out by Dane Steen Tinning and lost out to Phil Golding in the 2013 edition of the Wales Senior Open at Royal Porthcawl.

“I’ve been playing here for a long time and I know I’m in a good position to finally go one better," he said. "There are always bigger cheers for the home players so I hope that everybody comes out and supports us.”
Wesselingh, who has won six times on the Senior Tour, reinstated an old putter this week but didn’t even require it at the par four eighth when he holed out with an eight iron from 158 yards. That eagle was sandwiched between birdies at the seventh and ninth and laid the foundation for his outstanding 67.
“The putter has had an 18 month holiday, but it’s given me a great feel on the greens, especially with my lag putting,” said the Derby golfer.

“I enjoyed a bit of luck with back to back twos and only needing to use the putter once, but it kick started my day. Now I am going to enjoy playing with Woosie. He’s a legend. I can still remember sitting in front of my TV watching him hole that putt to win the Masters.
“I just love watching him play golf and he’s fun to be on the course with. I know the crowds will be pulling for him, but I will be doing my best to take the title from him. Don’t forget there are a few others not far off the pace who could shoot something in the mid sixties, so it’s not just a shoot out between Woosie and me.”
The Senior Tour will send the field out on two tees in the final round as a contingency against the possibility of adverse weather, so Woosnam and Wesselingh will be joined in the last group by Australian Peter Fowler, who watched Wesselingh’s 67 for 139.
On the same mark is joint first round leader Miguel Angel Martin, who shot a two over par 72 while the other first round leader, Denis O’Sullivan of Ireland carded a 73 for level par 140.
Spare a thought for Argentina’s Cesar Monasterio, who leapt to the top of the leaderboard when his seven iron from 144 yards at the seventh found the bottom of the cup for a welcome ace. However Monasterio proceeded to fire his next shot out of bounds from the eighth tee and the resulting quadruple bogey eight undid all the great work of the previous hole. Such is golf.

Carrick Neill Scottish open amateur stroke-play at Lossie

Ferguson well placed for third 72-hole win of season ... but it could all end in a play-off

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The Carrick Neill Scottish men's open amateur stroke play championship over Moray Golf Club's Lossiemouth links promises a battle royal over Sunday's final 36 holes with only four strokes spanning the top 20 or so at the halfway stage.
Short odds on the 72-hole event spilling over into extra holes, i.e. a sudden death play-off.
Sharing the pole position on four-under 138 are Welshman Owen Edwards (69-69), Englishman Marco Penge (69-69), Irishman Cormac Sharvin (69-69) and Scotland's Ewen Ferguson (69-69).
Bearsden GC member Ferguson has already won two 72-hole events this season - the Scottish champion of champions at Leven and the Craigmillar Park Open in Edinburgh.
This could be win No 3 for the former British and Scottish boys champion.
A total of 56 players on 146 and better qualified for Sunday's play.

Nico notches two-shot lead in Czech Challenge

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS

Nico Geyger put himself firmly in contention to claim a maiden title in only his sixth appearance on the Challenge Tour after moving two shots clear of Sweden’s Jens Fahrbring in the D+D Real Czech Challenge.
The Chilean was followed round Golf and Spa Kunetická Hora by cousins Markus and Thomas, and gave the Schmidt brothers plenty to cheer in a round of 67 which included five successive birdies from the tenth hole.
Geyger’s display, which carried him to 15 under par, was all the more impressive given the conditions in Drítec, with a stiff afternoon breeze making life difficult for the field.
The 28 year old, who had entered the weekend in a tie for the lead with England’s Steven Brown, got off the worst possible start with an opening bogey, but immediately responded with a trio of birdies to turn in 34.
The fun really started on the tenth hole, however, as Geyger found his groove with his irons and began peppering the pins, most notably on the 13th where he came within inches of an ace.
But the quintet of birdies came to a juddering halt at the 15th hole, as an awkward stance in a bunker led to a double bogey six. He swiftly regained his composure, however, and parred his way in to move within sight of a debut title in his first season on the Challenge Tour.
Geyger said: “I drove the ball very well and made a lot of putts, so any time you do that you’re likely to have a good day. In some ways starting with a bogey was actually a good thing, because it woke me up pretty quickly and made me focus. I got it back with three birdies on the front nine, then from the tenth on I was hitting it close on almost every hole.
“I almost holed my approach to the tenth, hit it fairly close on 11 and 12 and then very nearly made a hole in one at the 13th. So I really had it going, but unfortunately it came to an end with the double on the 15th. I got a bit unlucky there with my stance so I didn’t get too down on myself, then I made a few chances coming in but didn’t manage to hole any putts.
“I’ve been working really hard on my game these last few weeks and months, and it’s great that it’s finally beginning to pay off because it makes it all worthwhile. I’ve played better every day this week, so if I can keep that run going tomorrow then even if I don’t win, I’ll still be happy.”
Fahrbring already has one Challenge Tour title to his name, in the 2013 Norwegian Challenge, and the Swede is in a good position to double his haul after signing for a flawless round of 67.
Fahrbing rattled off two birdies in his first three holes to get off to a blistering start, before adding three more after the turn to climb to 13 under par.
He said: “I holed a 25 footer on the first for birdie, which was the perfect start. I didn’t hit the ball as well as I can today, but that made me play smart golf so my game management was very good. I really made the most of my opportunities, and I couldn’t have got much more out of my round.
“The conditions today were definitely the toughest of the week, the wind really picked up on the front nine so you had to be very careful. It died down a little bit on the back nine, and I was able to pick up a few more shots coming in. So it was a good day, and hopefully tomorrow can be an even better day.”
