Cardross assistant's ace wins £6,500 watch

WATCH IT! Left to right: Kyron Keogh (Rox Jewellers), Cameron Farrell, winner of the expensive watch, and  Grant Mitchell (Rox Jewellers).

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Cameron Farrell, 21-year-old first-year PGA trainee professional at Cardross Golf Club where his father Robert has been the club pro since 1994, won his biggest golf prize so far this week ... and he had to play only one shot to achieve it!
Jewellers Rox put up a Hublot watch worth £6,500 as a hole in one prize at the P and H Championship at Renaissance Club, East Lothian.
Cameron hit the bullseye with a downwind seven-iron at the 191yd 15th hole in the second round.
Even if there had been a gallery round the green to cheer the third ace of his golfing career - but the first competitive one - former Scotland junior international Cameron would not have heard them.
His mother Vicki, who also works in the Cardross GC pro's shop, explained:
"Cameron was diagnosed at three years old with profound deafness. He lip reads all the time, although he does wear very powerful hearing aids in both ears which give him a tiny bit of hearing but not that much help.
"He certainly hasn't let it stop him with his golf and was determined from an early age that he wanted a career in the golf industry."
So what do you do with a watch that is worth £6,500? Put it in a glass case .. maybe sell it ... or wear it on your wrist and hope you don't damage it?
"Cameron is going to wear it, and why not?" said his proud mum.
Young Farrell turned pro last June and is waiting the results of his first PGA exams.
He made the cut in a big field at the P&H Championship with scores of 74, 71 and 75 for a total of 220. A share of 35th place earned him close on £300 as well as the £6,500 watch (tournament winner Paul Robinson earned £6,000).

Harrington happy:  High wind on an Irish links

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Padraig Harrington delighted the home crowds at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory Foundation as the three-time Major winner moved into a share of the first-round lead at Royal County Down Golf Club, Newcastle, Northern Ireland, courtesy of a four under par 67.

The Dubliner, pictured, who won this event in 2007, enjoyed a spectacular finish to his opening round, recording five birdies in the space of six holes on the back nine to take the outright lead before being joined by Germany’s Maximilian Kieffer late in the day.
The 24-year-old from Düsseldorf took advantage of the favourable afternoon conditions in some style, carding an eagle, five birdies and three bogeys to equal Harrington’s course record.

Soren Hansen was a shot further back on three under par after the Dane, also a past champion of this event, signed for a three under 68.
Rory McIlroy, whose charity is hosting the event, struggled to a nine over par 80, while the highest-ranked Northern Irishman was Michael Hoey on level par, with Graeme McDowell a shot further back on one over.
Player quotes:

Padraig Harrington, 67 (-4)
“Those are ideal conditions for me out there. I love to play a tough links golf course, that's what I was brought up playing. That's what I specialize at.
“I'm not saying it's going to be easy the next three days, but certainly coming to a course like this is definitely suiting me.
“It is interesting having the crowds cheer me on, and it's encouragement, it's not expectation.
“I was enjoying it out there. You know, it's always nice when the putts are dropping. I kind of feel, whether it's this week or another week, I feel I'm going to win again soon.
“But not every week have I been consistent tee to green and not every week I've been consistent putting, but golf is a game that you're actually better off being a little bit erratic and if it all falls into place, it's a winning week.”

Maximilian Kieffer, 67 (-4)
“It was a difficult day. The weather changed all the time. There was a bit of rain as well, and it was pretty windy, but I played good, and I think the key today was to hole some putts.
“I had two three‑putts from off the green on the front nine, but then I made two long putts after that, so that really kept the momentum up. That was really nice, and then I had some good bounces as well, so just a very nice day.
“I wouldn't say I'm very good at links golf, to be honest. But I think it's just something different sometimes, and that's what is quite nice. It is not always the same golf course that we play.
“The links courses you have to think a little bit around it more, where to bounce it and that kind of stuff. And I see the shots very well around here and, even though there are a lot of blind tee shots, I really see them quite well.”

Soren Hansen, 68 (-3)
“It’s very pleasing. The rain coming in after a bit of sunshine obviously as well, but the wind straight across on the whole course is coming straight out of the west today, and it just played tough, and I just kept on hanging in there.
“I holed a few good putts in the middle of my round and that sort of kept me going, but otherwise it's one of those if you don't hole them, all of a sudden you're on the back nine and you're a couple over par. Then your round sort of seems to go away from you.
“But I managed to hole those, got a bit of a lucky break at the last few holes, and got in the clubhouse on three under, which I'm very pleased with.”

Danny Willett, 69 (-2)
“I drove the ball well, and I was in a lot of good positions off the tee. I was never in the fairway bunkers, never in any real trouble. So it allowed you to kind of hit average golf shots, hit into areas, and that's what I did.
“It never kind of got away from me. There were a couple of bogeys in there, but a couple of good saves. I didn't really do anything silly, so I was always in somewhat of a position.
“It's a great golf course. You know, we got to play a lot that week of the Walker Cup, and it was nice coming back and playing it Tuesday and then yesterday in the pro-am.
“It's just an incredible links golf course. You get tough weather out here and it can play brutal. Today it's been a good two, three‑club wind at times, but that's kind of what links golf is. I think it's great.”

Rory McIlroy, 80 (+9)
“Actually, I felt like I put myself in good positions off the tee, and my iron play was caught in between trying to play two ways. I hit it really well on the range and was keeping the ball down.
“I was hitting lovely little half shots the whole time. Then I got out on the golf course, and the wind wasn't up that much at the start and I felt like I didn't need to hit those shots so much. So I was sort of caught in between what shot to play out there.
“My poor iron play led to missed greens, which led to giving myself a lot of eight to 12‑footers for pars and that led to missing all of them.
“It's disappointing, but I just need to pick myself back up and get out there tomorrow and try and shoot a good one.
“I'm not sure what I'm going to need to make it into the weekend, but obviously I would love to be here for that so I’ve just got to get out there and play a bit better.”

Craig Lawrie fights back after early double bogey

Craig Lawrie fought his way back from a double bogey 6 at the second hole to finish joint leading Scot in 18th place with Paul Shields on the par-72 mark at the end of the first round of this week's PGA EuroPro Tour event, the Kerry London Championship at Burhill Golf Club, Surrey.
Lawrie birdied the first, 11th, 13th and 18th.
Ross Cameron also had a double bogey, at short 12th in a 73 for joint 36th place.
The Saltman brothers did not inspire confidence of a second-day surge. Zack worked hard to salvage a one-over 73 but is in joint 59th place. Lloyd had seven bogeys in a 76 which left in in joint 96th place and needing a big improvement to make the top 50 and ties who will progress to the final round.
Craig Sutherland (79), Kris Nicol (79), Sam Kiloh (80), Scott Borrowman (80) and Conor O'Neil (81) are similarly placed
Nicol had a double bogey at the sixth and a triple bogey at the 17th in halves of 42-37.
Kiloh had double bogeys at the seventh and eighth.
Chasing the £10,000 first prize are four men sharing the lead on 68 - Englishman Neil Raymond, Jack Colgate an Darren Wright and Irishman Alan Dunbar, a former British amateur champion.

Four share lead on four-under 68

NEWS RELEASE
Four players share the 18-hole lead in the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s Kerry London Championship at Burhill Golf Club on four under par 68

Neil Raymond, Alan Dunbar, Jack Colegate and Darren Wright all carded opening-round 68s to share the top of the leaderboard ahead of Liam Murray who is fifth on three under.

Gary King, winner of the first two events of the EuroPro season, was one-over-par in his first round, leaving him tied 35th.

Raymond (Corhampton Golf Club) double bogeyed the par-five second and also dropped a shot at the tenth. However, an eagle at the fifth, a birdie at eight and four more par-breakers on the back nine saw him sign for a 68 on the par-72 course.

Dunbar (Team Ireland), was the outright leader after 18 holes at Celtic Manor two weeks ago and is in a strong position again on the New Course at Burhill although he was left wondering what might have been after shooting eight birdies in his opening round.
Bogeys at seven, 10, 12 and 17 pegged him back to four under.

Colegate (Deangate Ridge Golf Club) was two over par after four holes but six birdies, including two on the par threes at eight and 12 saw him also finish the day in 68 strokes.

Darren Wright (Golf at Goodwood) began his first 18 on the tenth tee and was two under two holes later. From the 12th he went bogey, birdie, double bogey to be level through five. An eagle at the second took him to three under after birdies at 16 and one and a bogey on the 18th and when he broke par at five and eight he looked set for the outright lead. However, he stumbled at his last with a five on the par-four ninth.

McLeary in the mix at Czech Challenge

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Thanks chiefly to an explosive start which included holing a seven iron for eagle, Ross McGowan set the pace on seven under par alongside Steven Brown and Jamie McLeary on the opening day of the D+D Real Czech Challenge.
Despite suffering with a shoulder injury which restricts his movement, McGowan – who finished third in this tournament last year – signed for a round of 65 which was matched by his fellow Englishman Brown and Scotland’s McLeary as British players dominated the early leaderboard at Golf and Spa Kunetická Hora.
McGowan started the day with a visit to the Challenge Tour’s osteopath, and Poora Singh’s healing hands must have worked their magic as his patient flew out of the blocks with a birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie start.
The highlight was that approach from the rough to the 11th green, which skipped straight into the cup to ignite a charge which yielded a front nine of just 31.
McGowan’s back nine was not quite as spectacular, but he did add further birdies at the third and seventh holes to set the clubhouse target on seven under par.
McGowan, who returned to the winners’ enclosure after a fallow period with victory in the Zambia Open precisely one month ago, said:

“That start was a little surprising, especially as I haven’t been hitting it very well for the past couple of weeks. To be honest, I spent most of the first few holes in the rough this morning, which just goes to show what a funny game golf is sometimes.

“I don’t feel I played that great today and yet I’ve walked off on seven under, then there have been plenty of days where I’ve walked off with a 75 and felt I actually played pretty well. But I guess it’s a good sign that I can score well even when I’m maybe not playing my best golf.”
McLeary credited a hot putter for a round of 65 which included no fewer than nine birdies in Drítec.
By his own admission, McLeary has struggled for form and confidence this term after a chastening experience on The European Tour last season but, having taken a week off to work on his putting and refresh his mind, the Scot rediscovered his touch on the greens to turn in his lowest round of the year.
He said: “I missed Austria last week to get away from the game and also try to rethink my approach, because I’ve been trying to control my ball too much instead of just playing my natural game. I gave myself a lot of chances, and strangely enough I missed a few short putts but made quite a few longer ones.

" So I’m not really sure if that’s a good or a bad thing! I’ve been struggling from 15 feet and in so far this season – my stats are showing I’m holing half as many putts as I normally would from that range.
“So I worked a bit on my putting during my week off, and I also tried to adopt a more positive mental approach. I’ve been getting quite down on myself this year, I got a few bad breaks in tournaments and it felt like the world was against me. So I’m trying to take the rough with the smooth, and maybe that paid off for me today.”
Despite bogeying both par fives on the front nine, Brown also signed for the lowest round of a season which, like McLeary’s, is yet to kick into top gear.
An opening birdie heralded the start of an eventful front nine which included just two pars, as he made four further gains and that pair of bogeys on the second and seventh holes to turn in 33.
The back nine was a more sedate affair, as the Englishman notched a quartet of birdies to make it a three-way tie at the top.
He said: “It’s been a while since I’ve had a round like that, because I haven’t been playing very well to be honest. So it made a nice change. I’ve missed two cuts already this year and even when I’ve made the cut, I haven’t played particularly well.

"But I went home on the Monday after Turkey – which I wasn’t planning on doing – but I was hitting it all over the place, so I knew I needed to work on a few things with my coach.
“We worked out the problem – basically I was getting far too steep – and since then it’s been a lot better. I’m still hitting the occasional bad shot, but I’m also hitting a lot more good shots and at least now I know where I’m going wrong, whereas before I didn’t have a clue. So that allows me to stay calm and patient and it also gives me a lot more confidence, which bodes well for the rest of the year.”
The Swedish duo of Björn Åkesson and Jens Fahrbring, English pair Daniel Gaunt – who finished runner-up last year – and James Robinson, and Frenchman Anthony Snobeck currently share third place on six under par after each signed for rounds of 66.
It was also a bittersweet day for Hungarian Roland Hahn, who aced the 17th hole but missed out on winning a Mercedes CLA 220 CDI, which is only available for a hole in one in rounds three and four.

Rory heading for another early exit after opening 80

Rory McIlroy is in danger of missing the cut in his home event for the third year running after a nightmare first round at the Irish Open over the classic Royal County Down Links at Newcastle, Northern Ireland.
The world No 1 carded his worst first nine of the season, reaching the turn in 41, and never recovered as he shot a nine-over 80 - his highest round since the final round of the 2011 Masters.
Both McIlroy and Ryder Cup team-mate Martin Kaymer, who had a 79, failed to post a single birdie in windy conditions, as playing partner Rickie Fowler opened with a level par 71 to stay within three of the early lead.
Sub-par scores were difficult but not impossible as Danny Willett and Soren Kjeldsen showed with matching two-under-par 69s
