Local hero Lewis Bain in last four of Lothians

championship, plays Sean Marc

FROM THE LOTHIANS GOLF ASSOCIATION WEBSITE
Host club hope Lewis Bain eased into the semi-finals of the Lothians Championship at Musselburgh this evening..
Helped by an eagle-3 at the 12th on the Monktonhall course, the 19-year-old beat Newbattle's Stuart Thorburn 4 and 3.
The win set up a semi-final against Sean Marc after the Broomieknowe 25-year-old holed a testing downhill par putt at the last to beat Dunbar's Stephen Simants.
Earlier, West Linton's Stephen Smith had done likewise from much closer to come out on top in a ding-dong battle with Derek Thomson from Glencorse.
Thomson's clubmate, Sean McGarvey, is Smith's last-four opponent after he never looked back after a fast start in beating Richard Moffat (Turnhouse) 3 and 2.

Jerry Kelly and Kevin Na share Players

Championship lead at Sawgrass

 FROM SKYSPORTS.COM
Veteran Jerry Kelly carded the lowest round of the tournament to earn a share of the lead with Kevin Na at the halfway stage of the Players Championship in Florida.
The 48-year-old, who won the last of his three US PGA Tour titles in 2009, blitzed the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass for eight birdies and dropped just one shot in a sparkling 65 that lifted him alongside early clubhouse leader Na on eight under par.
Rory McIlroy is just four off the pace, despite enduring a frustrating afternoon as he battled to a 71, while Tiger Woods scraped into the weekend with a birdie at his last hole which preserved his proud record of never missing the cut at Sawgrass.
But Masters champion and world No 2 Jordan Spieth looked a forlorn figure as he crashed out on three over after an erratic 72, while Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose and Lee Westwood were other high-profile players who failed to make the halfway cut.
Kevin Na continued his good start to the Players Championship by carding a second- round score of 69 which leaves him on eight under going into the weekend.
Na got off to a rollercoaster start as he mixed three birdies with two bogeys over the first five holes. He steadied himself with five straight pars before picking up further shots at 11 and 12.
He gave one back after hacking his way from rough to rough at the 14th, but he drained a 15ft putt for a rare birdie at the 17th and safely parred the last to cap a three-under 69.
"I wasn't very comfortable after I made bogey on the first hole, but I made a nice birdie putt on two and followed right after on three," Na said. "My putter was definitely there today. I made a lot of good putts, key par saves, and some good birdie putts.
Jonas Blixt threw his club into the water after he shanked his tee shot on the 18th hole.
Na held the lead for the majority of the day until Kelly, playing in the final group of the second day, carded three birdies in a flawless back-nine 33 before adding four in five holes from the second.
Kelly three-putted the eighth green, but he pitched to 10 feet at the ninth and rattled in the putt to ensure his place in the final group out on Saturday afternoon.
The leading pair have a two-shot advantage over Branden Grace (67), David Hearn (71) and Chris Kirk (68), while Rickie Fowler continued his return to form with four birdies in a second straight 69.
McIlroy was at odds with his swing early on but managed to scramble five pars before making one mistake too many at the sixth, although he responded with three birdies in four holes around the turn to get within three of the lead.
But after a blocked drive into the pine straw at the long 16th, he compounded the error by taking a bold line into the green and his ball failed to carry the water.
The resulting 6 at the easiest hole on the course was a huge disappointment, but he safely negotiated the 17th before failing to convert a sublime approach to eight feet at the final hole.
The world No 1 is one of 14 players on four under par including his Ryder Cup team-mate Ian Poulter, who kept a bogey off his card and rolled in three birdie putts to return a commendable 69.
Defending champion Martin Kaymer and former winners Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia are a further shot adrift, although Garcia was left to rue a sloppy finish after dropping three shots over his last seven holes.
Woods looked to be heading for his first missed cut in 17 appearances at Sawgrass as he again struggled for any kind of consistency, offsetting five birdies with as many bogeys until coming to the ninth - his last - needing a birdie at make the cut.
But the Woods of old shone through as he holed a clutch birdie putt from nine feet that salvaged a battling 71, which he celebrated with a determined, trademark fist-pump rarely witnessed over the last 18 months.
However, Spieth looked like fatigue caught up with him as he again struggled with his swing and laboured to a 72 which left him on three over, while Rose bogeyed two of his last three holes to miss the cut by a single stroke.

England men beaten narrowly in Spain

England’s men suffered only their second ever defeat to Spain in the biannual international when they lost narrowly 12½ – 11½ at El Prat over the weekend.
Although they closed the opening day a point behind, a repeat of the 2005 loss at Puerta de Hierro looked unlikely after the second day foursomes which England won 3-1.
With the top four second series of singles shared, England required to win two of the remaining four to continue their winning run against the Spanish.
But only Nathan Kimsey emerged victorious as Spain collected three more successes to edge over the line.
Jordan Smith from Wiltshire was England’s most successful player, winning all four of his games, while Surrey’s Josh White gained three points, losing only his final day single.

Olesen continues to shine on return

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Thorbjørn Olesen continued to shine on his return from injury as he opened up a one-shot lead at the halfway mark of the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, on a day when Javier Colomo sealed his place in European Tour history.
Dane Olesen, playing in his first tournament back after three months out following corrective surgery to tendons in his left hand, followed an opening round of 65 with a second round of 68 to move to nine under par at the Heritage Golf Club, with Sweden’s Pelle Edberg his closest rival on eight under par following a round of 66.
Joint overnight leader Olesen recovered well from a difficult start to his round, posting five birdies in six holes before the turn, after opening with bogeys on the first and third holes.
He dropped another shot on the 13th hole but picked up his sixth birdie of the day on the 16th to edge clear of Edberg at the top of the leaderboard.
South African pair Thomas Aiken and Dean Burmester are a further shot back on seven under par, after rounds of 66 and 68 respectively, sharing third place with Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick, who battled back from a double bogey on his eighth hole to sign for a round of 67.
Meanwhile, the first tri-sanctioned event between the European, Asian and Sunshine Tours will go down in the record books for another reason after Spaniard Colomo became the first player in the history of The European Tour to record a hole in one on a par four, courtesy of a dramatic albatross on his closing hole, the 322 yard ninth.
Remarkably, after dropping a shot on the previous hole, Colomo had needed a birdie to make the weekend, and his boldness with the driver off the tee paid off in the most spectacular way, as he finished two shots inside the cut after signing for a round of 69 and a one under par total.

Key player quotes

Thorbjørn Olesen – 68 (-9 total)
“I have read the greens very nicely this week, today and yesterday. I missed a couple of putts in the beginning today but then I holed some really nice putts and I feel like I have the pace of the greens.
“I’m really looking forward to the weekend. It’s been a long break and then all of a sudden I’m up there in the lead, so it will be a lot of fun. Mauritius is a beautiful country, so no matter what happens, I will still like it.
“I didn’t have the biggest expectations this week but I knew I was swinging the club well and I’ve been practising hard the last couple of weeks. I was obviously hoping for something good, but I’ve been surprised at home good my short game has been this week. I thought it would be the part that would be rusty, but it has actually been really good. I’m pleased at that and it’s brilliant to be leading. It’s fun to be out there and be at the front again.”

Pelle Edberg – 66 (-8 total)
“I’ve taken advantage of the par fives and the driveable par fours. I’ve been up there on pretty much every hole, putting for eagle, and those holes are the key this week.
“I’ve been hitting driver on every hole because I’ve been hitting it so good. Maybe I should take three wood on some holes, but not this week because I’m going for it.
We have a re-rank coming up in a month or so, so a few more Euros would be good. It’s a good start towards that.”

Thomas Aiken – 66 (-7 total)
“It was a grind out there yesterday and I did pretty well like that for two-under-par. That was a good score, and then I came out today with very few expectations. I just tried to keep the ball in play and play the golf course. I played better on my first nine and scored worse than I did on the back. That’s golf.”

Matthew Fitzpatrick
67 (-7 total)
“To fight back after the double bogey and still finish four under is very pleasing. It was steady and solid after that. I’m not too far off the lead. A two-shot swing can happen in a round or even on a hole here. We’ve only played two rounds and anything can happen. It’s great being in Mauritius. I came here at the end of last year and it is great place. It’s been a great week so far, not only because I’m playing nicely, but we are looked after so well.

Javier Colomo
– on his hole in one albatross on par four ninth hole
“For the first time in my life I hit an unbelievable driver, very high with a little cut. I tried to stop the ball on the green and the ball found the hole. I needed a birdie to make the cut, so a double eagle is just fantastic. (Note: Pin was 329 yards from the tee). I made three putt bogey on eight and I was two over and I needed birdie to make the cut. That’s why I hit driver as I needed a birdie.
“We couldn’t see (it go in). We heard some guys shouting but we couldn’t believe that. We thought the ball was very close but when we were on the fairway, we couldn’t see the ball on the green. And then one guy told me that the ball was in the hole. It was a perfect shot.”
