Westwood wins Indonesian Masters play-off

ASIAN TOUR NEWS RELEASE

Jakarta: Lee Westwood fended off the spirited challenge from Thailand’s Chapchai Nirat,  defeating him with a birdie at the first play-off hole to win his third CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters today.

The former world number one’s bid to claim his hat-trick of titles at the US$750,000 Asian Tour event was secured when he birdied the play-off 18th hole as Chapchai, a four-time Asian Tour winner, could only make par.

“There are a lot of good players on the Asian Tour now and the standard is getting higher on this Tour and it’s harder to come over here and win, especially today.

“It’s nice to come back and play with them on their own Tour where they get to show everybody in Asia how good they are. To come to this tournament this week and win it three times is obviously extra special,” said Westwood.

The Englishman appeared to be cruising towards an emphatic victory until two successive bogeys on 16 and 17 blew the title race wide open.
He had the opportunity to win with a birdie at the last but misread the green and was forced to settle for a par and a four-day total of seven-under-par 281.

But after returning to the 18th hole for extra-time, Westwood made no mistake from the exact spot again.

“It was a tough putt coming into the hill over on 18. I misread it slightly and hit it to about five-feet and missed it. But fortunately in the play-off, I hit it to the exact same spot, I knew the line and it was a nice straight putt for the win.

“I’ve never been beaten around this golf course which is great and this win will give me the confidence for the year ahead,” said Westwood.

Howell runner-up to first Chinaman to win European Tour event on home turf

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Wu Ashun became the first Chinese player to win a European Tour event on home soil when he held off a spirited challenge from England’s David Howell at the Volvo China Open in his native Shanghai.
The 29 year old shot a closing round of 71 at Tomson Shanghai Pudong Golf Club to finish on nine under par for the week – one shot ahead of Howell, who missed an eight foot par putt on the last which would have forced a play-off.
Wu, who primarily plies his trade on the Japan Golf Tour but now has full playing privileges in The Race to Dubai, becomes the third Chinese player to triumph on The European Tour, following in the footsteps of Liang Wen-chong (2007) and Zhang Wen-lei (2003).
Both Liang’s and Zhang’s victories came in Singapore, and following Li Hao-tong’s agonising near miss in last week’s Shenzhen International, Wu’s win will now see the 29 year old enter the history books.
Defending champion Alex Levy finished in a tie for third place on seven under par alongside Thai ace Prom Meesawat and Argentine Emiliano Grillo, whose title challenge faltered with a double bogey at the par three 17th hole, where his tee shot found the water.
Key quotes
Wu Ashun: “It’s a wonderful day today. Everyone knew the course was playing very tough today, but I played very well today and I really enjoyed it.
“It’s been a wonderful week with wonderful weather, and I’d like to thank everybody for coming out and supporting me.
“Winning my national Open is very special, and I’m very excited about the rest of the season. I have many friends here with me this week, and they helped me a lot and encouraged me to play well.”
David Howell: “It’s obviously tough to take. I was in very good shape to win the tournament for most of the day, and didn’t get the job done. So it’s going to hurt for a while, but I didn’t do a lot wrong. I holed a lovely putt on 17 to save par to give myself every chance coming down the last.
"It felt like I was already in a play-off, because Ashun was in the clubhouse on nine under, so if I birdie the last I win the tournament, and if I make bogey I lose it. Unfortunately it was the latter.
“It’s obviously hugely disappointing to finish with a six, and I guess the crucial shot was the lay-up. To miss the fairway has cost me the chance to at least force a play-off, so I’ll probably be ruing that one for a while.
" I actually thought I’d hit a reasonable pitch, but it came up short then I rushed the first putt past, and left myself with too much to do. But that’s golf.”

RIDGEDALE, Missouri -- Boyhood rivals Ian Woosnam and Sandy Lyle took a two-stroke lead Saturday in the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf at Big Cedar Lodge.
Woosnam and Lyle shot a 6-under 64 in better-ball play on Buffalo Ridge's Springs Course to reach 13 under. On Friday, they had the best score at the par-3 Top of the Rock Course, a 7-under 47 for nine holes of modified alternate shot and nine holes of better ball.
Play will close Sunday on the par-3 course with nine holes of modified alternate shot and nine of better ball.
Woosnam and Lyle grew up about 20 miles apart, with Lyle the son of an English-based club pro  and Woosnam in Wales. Click here for an in-depth view on their professional and personal history.
They birdied five of the last six holes in windy conditions.
"I think I played very little part in it today, sad to say," Lyle said modestly.
"But Woosie's play was a huge rock. He always looked like he got the ball under control. And the few times that he was just slightly out, I managed to come in with a few pars, and then I birdied 17 at a good time when we were needing a bit of a boost. So, a strong finish made all the difference to the round."
Former Ohio State teammates John Cook and Joey Sindelar were tied for second with Corey Pavin and Duffy Waldforf. Cook and Sindelar, the first-round leaders after a 60 on the regulation course, had a 53 on the par-3 layout. Pavin and Waldorf shot a 53 on the par-3 course.
"It gets looking ugly in a hurry and you can see by the scores," Sindelar said. "I mean, it's just tough to do. The wind, this much wind, it starts affecting the putts."

LEGENDS OF GOLF SCORES:  Champions Division | Legends Division

In the Legends Division for players aged 65 and older, Larry Nelson and Larry Fleisher had a four-stroke lead at 11 under. They had a 66 at Buffalo Springs after opening with a 47 on the par-3 course.
"I thought it was a very difficult day," Fleisher said. "The wind really played havoc. The golf course the way they had it for us was very, very short and it was almost -- almost played against us because we're going with the short irons and, with all this wind, it's hard to control the spin.
"But Larry and I kind of dodged each other and got through it."
Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player were tied for second with Butch Baird and Al Geiberger. Nicklaus and Player had a 66 on the regulation course, and Baird and Geiberger shot a 49 on the par-3 course.
The Legends Division will close Sunday with nine holes of better ball on the par-3 cours

Compton catches Day after long bad eather delay in New Orleans

Weather once again plagued the Zurich Classic of New Orleans on Saturday. Nearly six hours of daylight was lost mid-day as rain poured onto TPC Louisiana, but when players were able to return to the course at dusk, Erik Compton took advantage.
Compton, a two-time heart transplant recipient, went on a birdie run Saturday evening to pull even with Australian Jason Day, who led at the start of the round.
Compton and Day were at 13 under, a shot ahead of Justin Rose, Blayne Barber, Jerry Kelly and David Hearn at TPC Louisiana when play was suspended because of darkness.
Compton finished six holes, and Day played three. Before rain halted play at 12:14 p.m., Day finished off a 7-under 65 to take the second-round lead.
Winless on the US PGA Tour, Compton also posted a 65 in the second round.
"It was nice to come out this morning and finish the round," Compton said. "And then, I basically just did what everybody else did, just saddled up and waited."
Compton opened the third round with a birdie on the first hole before the long delay. He came back with a birdie on the par-5 second and added birdies on the fourth and fifth holes.
"It's going to be a low scoring tournament so fortunate to get off to a decent start, a good start," Compton said. "It's a lot of golf, so you know you have to reach a number."
A strong storm moved that moved through the area downed at least one tree and toppled tables. Play resumed at 5:57 p.m. and was suspended for the day at 7:32 p.m.
It took Day 13 hours to get in seven holes Saturday.
"It's just a lot of patience you had to have today," Day said. "I know that it's very easy to get frustrated and start getting angry at the things that have gone on, especially with the weather. But with everyone that's getting frustrated I know I can't. Just got to stay centered and keep pushing."
The Australian, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 6, will open his title defence in the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Match Play next week in San Francisco
Martin Laird (75-69) missed the cut by five shots while Marc Warren (72-72) also totalled 144 to be sidelined.
But Russell Knox is hanging on in there. He is four under par overall after six holes of the third round.
PGA Tour officials said play is scheduled to resume at 7:30 a.m. Sunday. The players will not be repaired for the final round.
