61 by Merritt and a 62 by Spieth

at RBC Heritage Tournament

Troy Merritt doesn't have a green jacket – or a PGA Tour victory – but he did have one better than Jordan Spieth Friday during the second round of the RBC Heritage.
Merritt torched the back nine at Harbour Town Golf Links, going out in 7-under 28 en route to tying the course record with a 10-under 61. Merritt finished his day with four straight birdies, moving to 12 under for the tournament and taking a four-shot lead on the field at the end of his round. The record-tying showing came in the afternoon after 2015 Masters champion Jordan Spieth shot 62 in the morning to reach 6 under.
"It's all about tempo for me, and the tempo was really solid today," said Merritt to the Golf Channel following the round. "It was fun to roll the putts in and hear the crowd cheer."
The key for Merritt could have been a lucky charm. Merritt said that he tries not to take a ball out of play after making a birdie with it. His ball got beat up at the 12th hole, but he stuck with it and made six birdies in the remainder of his round.
After hitting an 18-footer for birdie at 15, Merritt stuck his approach shots within 7 feet on the final three holes and converted each of the putts. Merritt hit 13 greens in regulation and needed only 22 putts.
Merritt, a 29-year-old Boise State alumnus, is seeking his first PGA Tour win, although he finished second at the 2014 FedEx St. Jude Classic. What can he expect tomorrow?
"As long as I can break 61 on the front nine, (I'll be happy)" joked Merritt. "I just want to enjoy the moment, not think too much about the shots and add them up at the end of the day."

Graeme McDougall shares RBC Heritage Round 1 lead as Jordan Spieth struggles

FROM SKY SPORTS.COM
Matt Every and Graeme McDowell shared the lead after the first round of the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head, with Jordan Spieth eight shots off the pace as he came back to earth following his Masters win.
In difficult conditions, with strong winds and a distinct chill in South Carolina, birdies were hard to come by but Every carded six before a bogey on the 18th, while McDowell matched him only in reverse after bogeying the first.
"I hit a lot of fairways which I haven't really been doing enough of this year and I felt great on the greens," McDowell told Sky Sports 4. "The wind was tough to pick on the back nine, but I controlled my flight, made some good putts and I’ll take that for an opener."
Given the way the course was playing, staying at the top of the leaderboard was as much about survival as anything.
"I was greasy today," Every said. "It wasn't my best ball striking, it wasn't easy out there, but I got the best out of it.
"It was blowing. Back in the trees, when it's coming from the north and banking off the trees going the other way, it's dicey, but for the most part I did a good job."

First Round leaders

-5 Graeme McDowell (Nirl)
-5 Matt Every (USA)
-4 Sangmoon Bae (Kor)
-3 Cameron Smith (Aus)
-3 Scott Langley (USA)
-3 Morgan Hoffmann (USA)
-3 Matt Kuchar (USA)
-3 Kevin Kisner (USA)
Selected Others
-2 Ian Poulter (Eng)
+1 Billy Horschel (USA)
+2 Zach Johnson (USA)
+3 Jordan Spieth (USA
)
Sangmoon Bae is alone in third place, one shot back, ahead of a five-way tie for fourth which includes Kevin Kisner, Scott Langley, Morgan Hoffman, Matt Kuchar and Cameron Smith.
Smith could have been much better placed but for a bogey on the third and a double bogey on the seventh, where his tee shot put him in the trees and he faced a long road back. He had earlier carded five birdies in six holes between the second and seventh holes.
Kuchar's round was highlighted by a 35ft putt for birdie on the par-five 15th, which was the only hole on which his playing partner Spieth enjoyed any luck.
The world No 2 could only post a three-over 75 in his first round since winning last week's Masters, joining Boo Weekley and Jason Dufner in the group facing a battle to make the cut.
Watch day two of the RBC Heritage live on Friday from 8pm on Sky Sports 4 - your home of golf.

Peter Uihlein one-shot clear at Shenzhen International after windy day in China

FROM SKY SPORTS.COM
Peter Uihlein fired a three under 69 to move one-shot clear after the second round of the Shenzhen International.
The American struck five birdies during another tough day of windy conditions and tough scoring, making his only blemish via a bogey at the par-four 10th, to move one stroke clear over Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat.
Beginning at the 10th, Uihlein reached the turn one under before picking up three shots in a flawless front nine, holing a neat putt at the sixth to go alongside gains at the second and ninth.

Second Round leaders

-9 Peter Uihlein (USA)
-8 Kiradech Aphibarnrat (Tha)
-6 Emiliano Grillo (Arg)
-6 Gregory Havret (Fra),

-6 Matt Ford (Eng)
Selected Others
-5 Matteo Manassero (Ita)
-5 Tommy Fleetwood (Eng)
-1 Ross Fisher (Eng)
Level Andy Sullivan (Eng)
Level Bubba Watson (USA)

“It was tricky today. The wind was swirling quite a bit,” Uihlein said. “I got the back nine out of the way pretty quickly. I played very solid.
“I felt like getting anything under par on the back nine was nice, and I played a pretty stress-free front nine which is always good.”
Aphibarnrat had held the early morning lead with a long birdie putt at the third in one of five second-round gains, but missed a couple of par-save chances in his pursuit of a second European Tour title.
“It was a great round,” the world No 116 said. “Again, the wind was getting up on a few holes before I finished, but the way I was striking the ball is still very good.”
Overnight leader Huang Wey-yi triple-bogeyed the par-four 15th to drop back to four under for the week, two adrift of a group of four players tied-third.
France’s Gregory Havret’s bogey-free 68 lifts him to seven-under alongside Emiliano Grillo, was one-over for the day through eight holes before striking six birdies in the joint-lowest round of the day.
Darren Fichardt also heads in to the weekend three off the pace after posting three bogeys in a row during his back nine, as does Matt Ford following his second successive 69.
Issues
World No 4 Bubba Watson, by far the highest ranked player in the field, continued to struggle with the putting issues that hampered his bid to retain the Green Jacket at Augusta last week, dropping three strokes before the turn in a second round 74.
The American was hovering around the projected cut before three birdies on his back nine, so heads in to the weekend in a group level with Andy Sullivan, who slipped down the leaderboard with a double bogey at the par-four sixth and a dropped shot at the last.
The only Scots to make the cut (146 and better) were Richie Ramsay (145) and Craig Lee (146)
