2022 Ryder Cup venue: Germany, Spain, Italy or Austria after Portugal pull out of bidding

NEWS RELEASE
Portugal has dropped out of the race to host the 2022 Ryder Cup, leaving four countries in the running for the event.
Manuel Agrellos, president of the Portuguese Golf Federation, says Portugal pulled out because "the prevailing economic environment would prevent us from developing as strong a bid as we would wish."
Germany, Spain, Italy and Austria have hosted inspection visits from a delegation of Ryder Cup officials. They must make their formal submissions by April 30.
Officials say the host country and venue will be announced this autumn.

Eduardo Ruiz is new La Manga Director of Golf

Eduardo Ruiz is looking forward to writing an exciting new chapter in La Manga Club’s prestigious golfing history after being named as the new director of golf at Europe’s premier sports and leisure destination resort in Murcia, south-east Spain.

Ruiz, pictured, has a proven pedigree and growing reputation in the golf resort industry having worked at a number of the leading venues in Spain including Finca Cortesin, La Quinta and, most recently, 1997 Ryder Cup host Valderrama – reguarly rated as the top course in Spain – where he was operations manager.
The Spaniard took up his role at the start of this month (April) and joins a list featuring some of the most famous names in the game to be associated with La Manga Club including South African legend Gary Player (the resort’s first director of golf), the ’King of Golf’ Arnold Palmer (winner of the 1975 Spanish Open and re-designer of its South Course) and the late Severiano Ballesteros – the resort’s touring professional from 1980-85.
A five-time host of the Spanish Open, La Manga Club added to its first-class golf facilities, which include three 18-hole championship courses, by opening a new Leadbetter Golf Academy last autumn – the only one of its kind in mainland Spain – and Ruiz is relishing the opportunity to help lead the award-winning resort into a progressive new era.
Ruiz said: “It is a great honour to have been chosen."
He succeeds Scot Gary Silcock in the post.

SGU's new car deal with Pike and Bambridge

NEWS RELEASE
The Scottish Union is delighted to announce a ground-breaking sponsorship deal with Pike and Bambridge which is set to also benefit golf clubs and golf club members across Scotland.

Pike and Bambridge, one of the country's up and coming new car sales and leasing companies, will become the SGU's Official Vehicle Partner, providing sponsorship to amateur golf supporting the governing body's fleet of cars.

The company, with offices in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, is delighted to be represented by brand ambassador Richie Ramsay, pictured above, the European Tour star who recently won the Trophee Hassan II in Morocco. Pike and Bambridge are also official vehicle partners of the Professional Footballers Association Scotland and the Law Society of Scotland.

As part of the agreement, Pike and Bambridge will offer individual Scottish Golf Membership Card holders an exclusive service on new car sales and leasing from their complete range of brands and marques, with golf clubs receiving a commission every time one of their members acquires a new vehicle through Pike & Bambridge.

Ramsay, who received his new Pike and Bambridge sponsored car at last week’s Scottish Boys Championship at Dunbar, an event he played in several times during the early part of his amateur career, where the partnership was being launched, welcomed the new announcement.

"I have worked with Pike and Bambridge for two years now and they are a great company to deal with, offering fantastic customer service and knowledge of the car industry,” said the three-time European Tour winner.
“The team are very passionate about golf so it's no surprise to see them supporting the Scottish Golf Union with this new partnership."

Nathan Pike, Director of Pike and Bambridge, added: "We are delighted to extend our golf portfolio to the Scottish Golf Union and we welcome the opportunity to support golf clubs and their members through this new partnership. We operate across the whole of Scotland and offer a competitive package for any golfer looking to source a new car."

Ross Duncan, the Scottish Golf Union's Marketing and Sponsorship Manager, said: "The SGU is looking forward to teeing off this new sponsorship deal with Pike and Bambridge and we welcome their fantastic support. We are committed to adding value to being a member of a Scottish golf club and I'm sure many golfers will see this as a great option for their next car."

Golfers should visit http://www.pikeandbambridge.co.uk or contact the team on 0131 563 7493 or 01224 959 872, quoting SGU to find out more about Excellence in Vehicle Provision from Pike and Bambridge.

Challenge Tour introduces Road to Oman, Tour Rankings renamed

NEWS RELEASE
  • New bonus pool available for top three in the Road to Oman
  • Road to Oman to reach climax at the NBO Golf Classic Grand Final
  • The 45 highest-ranked players will vie for 15 European Tour cards and new bonus pool at the crucial Grand Final

The European Challenge Tour’s Rankings will form the newly-named Road to Oman, culminating in the crucial NBO Golf Classic Grand Final in the Omani capital of Muscat, where a brand new bonus pool of €60,000 will be on offer for those who finish the season in the top three.
The new concept further signifies the importance of the new Grand Final, hosted and sponsored by NBO (National Bank of Oman), and reflects the growing strength and depth of one of the world’s top developmental tours.
The 2015 Road to Oman will take in 25 tournaments in 19 different countries, mixing historic tournaments such as the Barclays Kenya Open and the Rolex Trophy with newer events in developing golfing nations such as Slovakia, Turkey and China.
At the all-important Grand Final, the 45 highest-ranked players will battle it out for the top 15 spots in the final Road to Oman Rankings, earning them graduation to The European Tour – thereby following in the footsteps of such golfing luminaries as Thomas Bjørn, Martin Kaymer and Henrik Stenson.
Furthermore, a new bonus pool will be available for those players who finish in the top three of the Road to Oman, meaning the chase for European Tour graduation will be given an exciting new dimension in 2015.
The winner of the Rankings will not only be awarded the honour of being crowned Challenge Tour Number One - receiving an engraved Rolex watch - but he will also receive the lion’s share of the bonus pool, an added €30,000.
The development marks an exciting new era in the Challenge Tour’s 27 year history and provides further proof of its increasing strength and success in producing the most talented young players in Europe and beyond.
While seven of last year’s Ryder Cup-winning team – Bjørn, Jamie Donaldson, Stephen Gallacher, Kaymer, Justin Rose, Ian Poulter and Stenson – all passed through the Challenge Tour ranks in years past, more recent alumni include American Brooks Koepka, Branden Grace of South Africa and promising Frenchmen Alexander Levy and Gary Stal.
Alain de Soultrait, Director of the Challenge Tour, said: “This is an exciting new development for the European Challenge Tour. Our schedule has for many years taken us to every corner of the earth and this year’s Road to Oman will see us visit places such as Kenya, Kazakhstan and China before ending in a nation which is displaying great vision and commitment in growing the game of golf.
“There is no better place to finish our journey than Oman’s beautiful capital Muscat and the NBO Golf Classic Grand Final.
“This year’s Road to Oman is set to be the most exciting season in the history of the tour, especially at the NBO Golf Classic Grand Final, where the battle for the extra bonus pool on offer will add to the enthralling race for European Tour graduation.
“We extend our sincere thanks to NBO for putting their weight behind this new initiative and putting their faith in the Challenge Tour, while we must also thank Rolex and the R and A for their continued support.”
Ahmed Al Musalmi, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Bank of Oman, commented: “We continue to support our Nation’s growth and prosperity through our corporate social responsibility initiatives, and this is another momentous occasion for the National Bank of Oman. The Road to Oman will further focus the attention of the golfing world on the Sultanate of Oman and on the NBO Golf Classic Grand Final in the various countries the Challenge Tour visits throughout the season.
“As each step along the Road to Oman takes the players closer to The Wave Almouj Golf, Muscat, and their European Tour destiny at the NBO Golf Classic Grand Final, Oman’s global profile will be raised further on the world golf map. It adds another dimension towards taking all the benefits Oman can offer to worldwide horizons.”
Oman has for the past two years hosted the National Bank of Oman Golf Classic, which quickly became one of the most popular tournaments on the schedule. The spectacular venue and Greg Norman-designed links-style layout was complemented by a professionalism and hospitality which made it a stand-out event for players, staff and fans alike.
It was only fitting, therefore, that the tournament be upgraded to become the most important on the Challenge Tour schedule.

Oman to stage 2015 Challenge Tour Grand Final in November

The European Challenge Tour is delighted to announce that its crucial season-ending tournament will this year move to a spectacular new location, when the NBO Golf Classic Grand Final takes place at Almouj Golf, The Wave in Oman’s capital city, Muscat, from November 4-7.
NBO (National Bank of Oman) has hosted the penultimate event of the Challenge Tour season for the past two years at the breath-taking Greg Norman-designed course, but its significance will increase to a whole new level when the Grand Final moves to the Omani capital following the signature of a four-year contract.
The Grand Final is the final event of the tour’s global 25-tournament season, where the 45 highest-ranked players will battle it out for the top 15 spots in the Rankings and graduation to The European Tour - where they will fulfil their lifelong dreams of playing alongside the biggest stars in world golf, with the hope of one day joining them in the pantheon of sporting greats.
Oman has already created history on Europe’s top developmental tour when in 2013 it became the first country in the Gulf Cooperation Council to stage a Challenge Tour event, the National Bank of Oman Golf Classic, making it a fitting selection for the biggest tournament of the 2015 season.
Having last year been described as “one of the best courses we played all year” by three-time European Tour winner Johan Edfors, as well as receiving glowing praise from many others, the links-style Almouj is sure to become one of the most popular venues in the long history of the Challenge Tour’s prestigious season finale.
As part of the agreement, NBO will also host the Oman National Amateur Grand Final during the week of the Challenge Tour’s thrilling finale at the same venue, providing inspiration for the country’s up and coming stars while also adding to the atmosphere of Muscat’s festival of golf.
It will be the third successive time the Grand Final has taken place in the region - having been held in Dubai for the past two seasons - as NBO continues to build on its vision of growing the game in Oman.
Alain de Soultrait, Director of the European Challenge Tour, said: “For the past two years National Bank of Oman has created one of the most successful and popular tournaments on the Challenge Tour schedule, so it gives us great pleasure to work with them on what is the biggest tournament of our season, the Grand Final.
“The players have spoken very highly of Almouj, which is a true Championship course in one of the most beautiful locations we visit, with many of them saying it is the best course they have played on our tour.
“We must extend our sincere thanks to National Bank of Oman and its Chairman Mohammed Mahfoodh Al Ardhi for showing such vision and commitment in making this significant step up by becoming the host of our most prestigious event and we know they will provide a professionally organised set-up worthy of our Grand Final.
“Thanks also go to our Challenge Tour partners Rolex and the R and A, without whom it would not be possible to stage a tournament of such gravitas and prestige.”
Ahmed Al Musalmi, Chief Executive Officer of the National Bank of Oman, concluded: “In hosting the National Bank of Oman Golf Classic for the past two years we had the opportunity to show the world what Oman can offer in terms of staging a prestigious world-class sporting event.
“The accolades we received over those two tournaments from players and their managers, spectators, dignitaries, VIPs and Tour officials was simply overwhelming. The fact that National Bank of Oman has invested in the NBO Golf Classic Grand Final by committing to the title sponsorship of the tournament for the next three years is another example of the vision of the Bank in widening its horizons and appealing to a completely new global audience.
“Our success of the National Bank of Oman Golf Classic as the penultimate event on the European Challenge Tour season has led to the National Bank of Oman Golf Classic Grand Final, where the top 15 players on the Challenge Tour Order of Merit after our event, will have earned their place on The European Tour 2016 International Schedule.
“The event has certainly been a success story which has earned global recognition not just in becoming the NBO Golf Classic Grand Final but it has also put Oman firmly on the golfing tourism global map."
