David Drysdale in Morocco mix with a 67

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Frenchman Adrien Saddier fired a seven under par opening round of 65 to lead the Trophee Hassan II by a single shot, with Masters Tournament hopeful George Coeztee among the chasing pack in Morocco.

David Drysdale, pictured right, is the leading Scot. He is certainly in the mix with a five-under-par 67. The only other Scot under par is Andrew McArthur.
Saddier, whose 2015 schedule will focus mainly on the European Challenge Tour, only earned a spot in the field in his own category on Monday morning, but he made the most of his big chance from the outset, chipping in for an eagle three on the first hole and repeating the feat for birdie on the par four sixth, before picking up further shots on the seventh, tenth, 15th and 18th holes.

Those latter two birdies moved him clear at the top of the leaderboard, with late-starter Daniel Gaunt of England also briefly reaching the summit, before a closing bogey meant he finished a shot back on six under par.
Tshwane Open champion Coetzee needs a victory at Golf du Palais Royal in Agadir on the Atlantic coastlineto secure an invite to the first Major Championship of the year, and the South African made a strong start with a five under par round of 67.
Coetzee recovered from a double bogey five on his penultimate hole – the eighth after starting on the tenth tee – by posting a birdie on the last. He shares third position with Scotland’s David Drysdale, whose eventful back nine included an eagle on the tenth hole, a double bogey on the 12th and four birdies, and Englishman Chris Wood, who shot his best round since suffering a wrist injury six months ago.
Germany’s Marcel Siem, the 2013 Trophee Hassan II champion who can also secure a trip to Augusta National with victory this week, is a further shot back on four under par in a nine-way tie for sixth position.
Key player quotes
Adrien Saddier (-7)
“To chip in for an eagle on the first and again on the sixth was a good start – I didn’t need my putter. I just tried to be focused on the back nine. It’s almost my best round. I shot 64 in Qatar last year, which was eight under, so this is one of my best rounds. I felt like I was in good shape. If I could get a win it would change my schedule as at the moment I’m playing on the Challenge Tour. I just need to focus on each shot now and see what happens.”
Daniel Gaunt (-6)
“I played really good golf today and had the ball under control from the start. I was a little disappointed to bogey the last as it could have been a bogey free round, but I hit one bad shot in 18 holes so I’m happy. I’ve got a new putter this week and it is the best I’ve felt over a putter in god knows how long. I’ve always said if I can putt well, I can contend. There’s a long way to go though.”
George Coetzee (-5)
“Augusta is on my mind obviously. I’m here to try and qualify, but I’m just trying to play golf and hopefully on Sunday I will be in contention.
I’m happy with my start. It looks better than it felt, but I’m happy to post a good number. I made a couple of putts on the front nine, but I hit two provisionals. So it was good to make the putts and get the birdies. There is still a lot of work to be done.”
Chris Wood (-5)
“I’d take five under par round any course at the moment. It’s been a long time since I’ve shot under par with a card in my hand. I played as well as I have done for six months today, so I’m much more pleased.
Things haven’t been going in the right direction until this point. This is my third tournament of the season and the first two weren’t too good. I obviously had a long break so it is nice to finally find the form I left in October.
It’s always different with a card in your hand. Missing competition for five months was difficult and it took me a while to get back into my routine and feel comfortable again. It’s different for some as Alex Noren had a year off and came back and nearly won in Dubai. It just shows we are different.”
Marcel Siem (-4)
“It’s only the first round but I’m really excited about (the possibility of) playing the Masters. I’ve not played that before. I won here two years ago and it still wasn’t enough, which was horrible. I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing and work on the range. Let’s try hard and to focus and not make any stupid mistakes. I’ve got the experience and I know the golf course. I can make enough birdies so I just need to avoid the mistakes.”
