MONTY IN THE MIX AT TUCSON

FROM GOLFWEEK.COM
Amid major champions and former PGA Tour standouts, Jerry Smith took the lead at the Champions Tour's Tucson Conquistadores Classic on Friday with a first-round 65.
Smith, who earned his spot on the tour through Q-school last year, played the front nine – his final nine holes after starting on No. 10 -– in 6-under 30 at Omni Tucson National in Arizona, including a hole-in-one at the 197yd seventh.
Smith leads a group of four by two shots, including Colin Montgomerie. Reigning Schwab Cup champion Bernhard Langer carded a 3-under 69 in Thursday's first round and is tied for ninth. Tom Watson teed it up in Arizona, shooting a 4-over 76.

Arnold Palmer Invitational

HOFFMAN LEADS FOR FIRST TIME

FROM CBS SPORTS.COM
ORLANDO, Florida -- Equipped with his first US PGA Tour lead in 67 starts, Morgan Hoffmann played on Friday like he wanted to keep it in the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Hoffman made birdies on half of his holes for a 7-under 65, giving him a three-shot lead over Henrik Stenson, Harris English and defending champion Matt Every going into the weekend on soft and defenseless Bay Hill.

Stenson, English and Every each had a 66.
Rory McIlroy also got into the mix -- finally -- by making five straight birdies on his back nine for a 66, his first sub-70 score in three PGA Tour events this year.
He is five shots behind and headed in the right direction in his final start before the Masters.
Bay Hill has greens that are so stressed that they will be replaced this summer. They are slow and receptive, a recipe for low scoring, and it shows.
Hoffmann is at 13-under 131, one short of the 36-hole record at Bay Hill. The cut was at 142, matching the lowest score to make the cut in 27 years at Bay Hill. It was the first time the cut was under par, but only because the tournament changed par to 70 (instead of 72) in 2008.
''I'm trying to birdie every hole out there, so it was good,'' Hoffmann said. ''Just hitting great putts and good shots into the greens really helps. It's nice to hit some greens for a change. This year hasn't been that great, and it's a good change.''
The 25-year-old from Oklahoma State made six birdies on the front nine, including four in a row, and he finished with a 6-iron out of the rough and over the water -- the ball landed just four paces onto the green -- for a par that kept him in control.
Hoffmann came into the week at No. 158 in the ''strokes gained'' statistic from tee-to-green. He leads the field at Bay Hill.
Next up is how well he holds up under pressure on the weekend.
Stenson, who has finished fourth in his two Florida events already, birdied his last four holes for a 30 on the back nine. He will be playing in the penultimate group with English, who is No. 52 in the world just outside qualifying for the Masters.
''Got to keep the pedal down and keep aggressive,'' English said.
He is coming off a top 10 at Innisbrook in which he closed with a 65, which moved him up eight spots in the ranking.
McIlroy had dinner with Palmer on Thursday night and was treading water Friday morning until an 18-foot birdie putt on the par-3 second hold got him going. He birdied the next four holes, though he lost some momentum at the end with a bogey on No. 8 and a scrambling par on his final hole.
''It would be nice to finish the round off a little better, but still a good score and sets me up well for the weekend,'' McIlroy said.
''I think each and every day I'm feeling a little more comfortable, especially on the greens. Obviously, we played in the morning so we got the best of the greens, and it's easier to trust the lines you pick for yourself. But happy with how I putted today, and putt like that over the weekend, I'll have a chance.''
A lot of that depends on Hoffmann, who is coming off a pair of 12-hour range sessions this weekend to try to rely on a slight fade.
Every has only one top 10 since he won at Bay Hill a year ago, and he has not finished in the top 25 in his last 17 tournaments.
But he is confident he is headed in the right direction with his swing, and it showed for two days. He ran off four straight birdies at the end of his round for a 66 and was at 134.
''I'm really excited to play golf because I know I have good stuff coming really, really soon,'' Every said. ''And I said before, you can lie to yourself. I've done it before all the time where I think I can win at the start of weeks. It's like probably how Rory feels every week.''
McIlroy, playing in Palmer's tournament for the first time, had dinner with the King on Thursday night after his opening round (and a drug test). They chatted more about commercial possibilities and old-time golf stories than McIlroy's bid to win the Masters and complete the career Grand Slam.
Palmer also insisted the 25-year-old McIlroy have a banana split.
''I'll be going to the gym this afternoon,'' McIlroy said. ''It was fantastic, it really was. He's telling stories of the old days and talking about a few of the things he's done more from a commercial standpoint, the drink and golf courses and all this sort of stuff - stuff that I could potentially be getting into in the future.''
He said Palmer also told him how close he was to his father.
''It was just great to be in his presence, and great to be in his company, and I had a good time,'' McIlroy said.
Divots
Sam Saunders, the 27-year-old grandson of Palmer, made four birdies on the back nine to make the cut by two shots. ... With a breeze at his back, Gary Woodland hit a 358-yard drive on the par-4 fifth hole to short of the green, 50 feet from the hole. He still made par. ... Adam Scott had a 73 and is nine shots behind.

OOSTERHUIS HANGS UP HIS MICROPHONE

                                                FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
European Tour Chief Executive, George O’Grady, has paid tribute to former Ryder Cup player and broadcaster, Peter Oosterhuis, pictured left, who has decided to retire at the age of 66.
Oosterhuis brought the same diligence and professionalism to his latter career as a golf analyst on television as he had when winning 20 times on The European Tour and capturing four consecutive Order of Merit crowns between 1971 and 1974.

London-born Oosterhuis worked for CBS Sports, the Golf Channel and Sky Sports for 20 years after making the seamless switch from playing the game superbly to analysing it with an insightful clarity and a sense of humour.
O’Grady, said: “I am certain I speak for everyone connected to The European Tour in paying tribute to Peter, not only in his previous career as a great player but since he moved into the world of broadcasting.
“His professionalism showed through in all of his commentaries, where his insights helped bring this great game that we love to life. We wish him well in his retirement and hope to use his experience wherever possible in the future.”
Oosterhuis, who spent 11 years on the US PGA Tour, played in six Ryder Cups and finished runner-up in The Open twice, in 1974 behind Gary Player and again in 1982 when Tom Watson was champion.
After deciding to hang up the microphone, Oosterhuis said: “Golf has been a big part of my life ever since I was a little boy growing up in England, and I thank CBS and Golf Channel for allowing me to continue in the sport after my playing days were over.
“I feel it is the right time to step away to focus on things in life that I have always wanted to do.”

HANSEN LEADS WEATHER-DELAYED

MADEIRA OPEN WITH A 68 (-4)

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Joachim B Hansen moved into the clubhouse lead at the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI, courtesy of a four-under-par 68, before heavy rain and the resulting flooded greens caused  an overnight suspension.
After the beginning of the 23rd edition of the tournament was delayed by 24 hours, and a further one hour and 50 minutes on Friday morning, due to strong winds, the first round finally got underway at 9:40am on the second day at Clube de Golfe do Santo da Serra.
There was enough time for all of the morning groups to finish their rounds and Dane Hansen’s bogey-free round was all the more admirable, considering the windy conditions at the mountain-top venue.
Having started at the tenth, the 24 year old former Challenge Tour Graduate picked up shots at his opening hole and the 12th before replicating that on his back nine with birdies at the first and third.
That moved him one clear of Frenchmen Jean-Baptiste Gonnet and Adrien Saddier as well as Englishman Andrew Marshall, who all carded 69s, while Finland’s Roope Kakko was three under through 14 holes and Jeppe Huldahl of Denmark was three under through eight before heavy rain called a halt to proceedings.
The first round will resume on Saturday morning at 8am. The expectation is that the tournament will be reduced to three rounds, if not two unless the weather improves.

Player quotes
Joachim B Hansen: “I felt great out there and it’s a good start. I missed a short one on the 11th hole for three birdies in a row to start but I feel confident with my swing and I know where the ball is going. I just need to control it in the wind.
“I didn’t really make any big mistakes, I hit a wrong club at the sixth from the tee and that got me in trouble but I holed a good putt for par. That was about the only trouble I was in today.
“The course is nice, really good conditions, and it’s good they made the greens that much slower so the ball doesn’t roll in the wind.
“No bogeys was pretty impressive, I’d take that every day. I didn’t feel nervous out there and I just knew what to do. I actually played with the wind most of the time so if it was left to right, I hit a left to right curve and the same with right to left, both from the tee and into the greens. I had a lot of control out there.
“I just have the feeling that I can shoot any score right now and four under was a lot better than I expected. I think it is possible to go lower out there because I had 30 putts today and I missed a few short ones for birdie. But you can’t make every putt.
“It would be nice if (the tendency to shoot very low scores) came back to me. I struggled last year, I just needed one big result – I made a lot of cuts but needed the top ten finish to keep my card. It’s a big confidence boost, it’s very nice to feel the game is back to where I think it can be.”
Adrien Saddier: “I had a great back nine. I made a really nice chip at ten and my game was really good after that, I made some good putts and hit some nice shots and I just needed to stay focussed shot by shot.
“The wind was straight on the back nine so it was better to keep the ball straight and hit good shots. My game was good recently and I just needed to stay focussed and hit good shots.
“It’s not easy with all the delays but I was here last year so I know to be patient this week and see what happens when we get out on the course.
“This course suits me well because you don’t need to take out the driver very often so I can hit the irons off the tee and that helps to keep it low and hit fairways.”
Jean-Baptiste Gonnet: “This morning was really tough with the wind. I started at the tenth and it was terrible.
“I played really well though to be honest, in those conditions it is a really good round. I played solid and it was just my day, I holed two chips in a row at the fifth and sixth for birdie.
“My game is in good shape and I was very patient, but when you come here you know what to expect – the wind is going to blow and you’re going to have stops and starts in play so you have to be patient, that’s the key this week.
“This is my first event so it’s not a bad way to start the season with a three under here. My game is in good shape, I’m back with my old coach, who I was with for a long time and things are much simpler for me now. I’m not thinking too much about technique or anything like that.
“I just want to enjoy it out on the course and that’s it. This is a big event for us on the Challenge Tour and, even when it wasn’t the first event of the season, it’s always an important one for us so you know you have to play well here.

GUNN WINS BY SIX IN CALIFORNIA

Dornoch golf exile Jimmy Gunn scored a runaway victory yesterday (Thursday) on the eGolf Gateway Tour event at La Purisima golf course, Lompoc in California, writes Colin Farquharson
Now based at Scottsdale, Arizona, the 34-year-old Gunn, pictured, shot rounds of 73, 68 and 68 for a seven-under-par aggregate of 209 over a testing course. He won by six strokes - one of the biggest victory margins ever on this highly competitive tour - to collect the $12,000 first prize.
Joint runners-up on 215 were Americans Laddy Correa (74-75-66) and Matt Hansen(73-73-69). They each earned $6,112.
Leader by one stroke with 18 holes to go, Gunn blew the opposition away with birdies at the fourth, fifth, sixth, 11th and 13th in his final, four-under-par round. His only bogey came at the ninth.
Over the 54 holes, Gunn had 13 birdies. He had a double bogey 6 in his first round.
His mother Wendy, back home in Dornoch, follows Jimmy's golf very closely, is in contact with him most weeks and can recite off his scores at the drop of a hat.
"I'm a very proud Mum this morning," she said.

Scratch foursomes winners - Keil and sister Kimberley Beveridge

THREE WINNERS FROM ABOYNE AT

N.E. ALLIANCE FOURSOMES FINALS

It was Aboyne's place in the sun at Craibstone Golf Club today (Friday) when three players from the Aberdeenshire village figured on the winning side in the North-east Golfers' Alliance scratch and handicap foursomes finals, writes Colin Farquharson.
Brother and sister Keil (31) and Kimberley (19) Beveridge, like all 16 match-play qualifiers randomly paired by a computer, won the scratch final for the "Evening Express" Shield and retired helicopter pilot David Nelson from Aboyne partnered Craibstone member Lenny Duncan to victory in the handicap final of "The Press and Journal" Shield tournament.
Kippie Lodge teaching professional Keil and two-handicap Scotland women's international Kimberley, an Aboyne Golf Club member, won by one hole against Tony Robertson (Peterculter) and John Borthwick (Craibstone).
"Kimberley's putting was the difference between the two sides," said Borthwick.
"The clincher was on the 16th where she holed from more than 40ft for a birdie to put them two up with two to play."
The Beveridges had squared the match at the 13th and gone one up at the 15th. Robertson and Borthwick won the 17th - their first success since the 10th - but it was too little, too late. The last hole was halved, leaving the Beveridges as winners.
"I have coached my little sister all her golfing life and it was nice to team up with her, albeit thanks to a computer, for the first time to win something," said Keil whose girl friend is LET rookie Laura Murray.
David Nelson, like Kimberley, is a member of Aboyne Golf Club.
and his victory with Lenny Duncan over Neish Chisholm (Kemnay) and David Bisset (Banchory) was the third time he has been on the winning side in "The Press and Journal" Shield handicap foursomes.
"I won it, with different partners, as long ago as 1992 and again in 2006," said Nelson.
Chisholm and Bisset won the first two holes but after being pulled back to all square by losing the fifth and sixth, they generally played second fiddle for the rest of the match.
Duncan and Nelson went one up at the eighth, two up at the 10th and, with the benefit of a stroke concession, three up at the 13th. That virtually was the end of the contest which finished on the 16th green.

 RESULTS
SCRATCH FINAL (Evening Express Shield)

ALLIANCE NOTES
Colin Farquharson's viewpoint
The scratch final winners earned £150 apiece, cash to pro Keil, voucher to amateur Kimberley
The handicap final winners received amateur vouchers worth £100 each.
Although the value of the Alliance foursomes prize fund doubled for this year's tournament it was very disappointing to the organisers that only three professionals instead of eight played in the foursomes.
Time to drop the "pro-am" tag and simply call it the Scratch section and the other the Handicap section.
How does one persuade professionals to support the foursomes which, in days gone by, was the highlight of the Alliance season?
Answers on a postcard to jt secs David Wilson and David Mackay.

TRAIL-BLAZERS: Keil and Kimberley Beveridge are the first mixed gender pairing to win either the scratch or handicap foursomes.
VENUES: Next year's North-east Alliance championship will be played at Portlethen (first round) and Craibstone (second round) probably as the last fixture of the Alliance season rather than, as for the last two years, the penultimate fixture. Which would be a good move.
The scratch and handicap foursomes will again be played at Craibstone.

ORDERS OF MERIT: The Orders of Merit added a fair bit of interest over the closing weeks of the season. They will continue next season with Brimmond Bistro again rewarding the 1-2-3 in the scratch order of merit, perhaps with a slight increase in the value of the vouchers or keeping the same value and adding a fourth prize? Worth thinking about.
Willie McKenzie of WLM Golf is keen to sponsor the Class 1 and 2 handicap orders of merit again, possibly extending it to give 1-2 or even 1-2-3 prizes in both categories.

HAZLEHEAD COMEBACK? In the days when I played on the North-east Alliance circuit, fixtures were quite common on the municipal courses of Hazlehead, King's Links and Balnagask (Auchmill had not been opened then!)
Dave Wilson thinks there is just a chance that Hazlehead could figure on the 2015-2016 schedule. Watch this space.
On the subject of next season's fixtures,  am I alone in thinking that a touch of variety about the weekly format would not go amiss?
Instead of 25 or so 18-hole individual stroke-play events, what about introducing a pairs better-ball competition one week, perhaps a Stableford on another - the computer can work out the points!

LENNY IN LUCK: Craibstone's Lenny Duncan had a memorable Alliance season. He made his debut in the weekly competitions and went all the way in the foursomes to win the Handicap title with David Nelson. Well done, Lenny - was it just beginner's luck?

John Duff, NE Alliance player of year, and winner of Brimmond Bistro Scratch Order of Merit

John Duff (left) receives the three-figure amateur voucher first prize from Craibstone Golf Club General Manager Billy Sim for the Newmachar amateur's outstanding success in winning the North-east Alliance's Brimmond Bistro-sponsored Scratch Order of Merit, writes Colin Farquharson.
John, also winner of the NE Alliance championship for the second time in three years, had actually won the Scratch Order of Merit well before the final counting fixture, the second round of the championship at Craibstone.
John, brought up in Inverurie where he still lives, is also a member at Kintore Golf Club.
Duff won or tied for first at Craibstone (September 3), Newburgh (November 26), Spey Bay (February18), Duff House Royal (March 11) and, of course, hewon the two-round championship at DHR and Craibstone (March 11-18. He also had several top-5 finishes.
John's Order of Merit points tally of 6,698 was more than 2,000pt ahead of runner-up Lee Vannet, the Craibstone teaching pro.
Tony Robertson, now a reinstated amateur at Peterculter after being an assistant professional at Murcar Links, won the third scratch prize.
Both Vannet and Robertson leapfrogged over the Alliance captain and Royal Abedeen senior assistant pro Joel Hopwood who dropped from second to fourth in the table after Wednesday's points had been totalled up .... by Joel, himself, who devised the points schemes for the Orders of Merit and updated the tables every week for Scottishgolfview.com
