ABOYNE'S BEVERIDGES REACH

FINAL AFTER COMPUTER PAIRING

Aboyne brother and sister Keil and Kimberley Beveridge have reached the final of the North-east Golfers' Alliance scratch foursomes at Craibstone Golf Club - after being paired by a computer in a random draw of all the qualifiers, writes Colin Farquharson.

Keil, 31-year-old teaching professional at Kippie Lodge Sports Club, Milltimber, and 19-year-old Scotland international Kimberley will play Tony Robertson (Peterculter), a former Murcar Links assistant pro reinstated to the amateur ranks, and Craibstone member John Borthwick for the "Evening Express" Shield tomorrow morning (9.20am tee off)
The handicap final for  "The Press and Journal Shield" (9am start) will feature Neish Chisholm (Kemnay) and David Bisset (Banchory) - who were both brought up in the town of Keith and went to school together - against Lenny Duncan (Craibstone) and retired helicopter pilot David Nelson (Aboyne). Duncan and Nelson will receive one stroke, at the 11th.
The Beveridges - Kimberley is a two-handicapper and has played regularly on the NE Alliance circuit all season - won a tight match by one hole against the new Alliance champion, John Duff (Newmachar) and Stewart Allison (Caledonian).
"The key hole was the 16th," said Keil (pictured above). "We were in a water hazard and looked like going one down. But we salvaged a half with a good up and down, then went ahead with a par 4 at the 17th and halved the last for victory.

"Sheer luck that Kimberley (pictured left) and I are playing together. We never played together in any foursomes before I turned pro. Now a computer brings us together - and here we are in a final. What luck!"
Robertson and Borthwick were roughly level par in a match of five birdies, winning by 2 and 1 against Royal Aberdeen assistant pro Joel Hopwood and Charlie Cassie (Nigg Bay).
"We won the first two holes and never fell behind after that but we were pulled back to all square by the 10th and had to fight our way back into the lead," said Robertson.
In the handicap semi-finals, Chisholm and Bisset were five up after nine holes on their way to a 7 and 6 win over Mike Winton (Caledonian) and Jim Scott (Peterculter).
Duncan and Nelson took an early three-hole lead against Low and Murray and were still three up after 14 holes before winning on the 17th green.

Who said golf was a young man or young girl's game? Naming no names. the combined age of the four competitors in one of the day's foursomes ties added up to 287! Another competitor had his 73rd birthday today. Emphasising that you are only as old as you feel.
Spectators would be very welcome to come along to Craibstone Golf Club to watch the two finals on Friday morning.
The handicap final tees off at 9am and the scratch final at approximately 9.20am.
And when it's all over you can relax with lunch or just a cup of tea and delicious scores inside the Craibstone clubhouse at the Brimmond Bistro - which is open to members of the public every day.

ARNOLD PALMER PLANS NEW COURSE

NEXT DOOR TO CASTLE STUART

NEWS RELEASE
Arnold Palmer is to build his first golf course in the Home of Golf in a partnership with Castle Stuart Golf Links in the Highlands.
The Arnold Palmer Group has confirmed it is joining forces with Castle Stuart’s managing partner Mark Parsinen and his team to collaborate on a spectacular new 18-hole links course on the Moray Firth coastline near Inverness.

The new venture will complement the existing course at Castle Stuart, built by Parsinen and Gil Hanse and which has achieved worldwide acclaim since opening in 2009.
Plans for the venue’s second iconic course will be submitted within two months and it is envisaged work will get underway early next year, ahead of the return of the Scottish Open to Castle Stuart for the fourth time in six years. It is planned to have the new links open for play by 2019.
The partnership deal was announced by Arnold Palmer, pictured above, at his Invitational tournament which is being held this week at the golfer’s Bay Hill Club in Orlando, Florida.
Discussions on the project have been ongoing for some time and members of the Palmer team have visited Castle Stuart several times recently
Arnold, himself, commented: “I have had a strong affection for Scotland since I first went there in 1960 to play in the Open at St. Andrews. I have returned many times since, including a memorable victory in the Open Championship at Troon in 1962.
“The opportunity to build an iconic golf course in Scotland would be the culmination of all these great experiences.  I am looking forward to my visit to Castle Stuart in a few months’ time.
Mark Parsinen, who also co-designed Kingsbarns Golf Links in Fife, said; “We have been in discussion for more than a year now with the Arnold Palmer Group and we are delighted that it has joined the partnership at Castle Stuart Golf Links.
“We are working with his design team on the routing of the new course with a view to beginning construction this time next year.”
The new course will be similar in length to the existing 7,193-yard links and will feature spectacular views across the Moray Firth as well as the 17th century castle which gives the course its name
Stuart McColm, Castle Stuart Golf Links’ general manager, added: “This is fantastic news, not just for Inverness, but for the Highlands and for Scotland. We at Castle Stuart have focused on working with other partners to promote the Highlands as a world class golfing destination and this announcement that the Arnold Palmer Group wants to partner with us can only enhance that reputation.
“Having two world class courses near Inverness, together with all the other great courses in the Highlands, will undoubtedly drive more people to this area and have a significant economic impact.”
The development is another major milestone in the short but spectacular history of Castle Stuart Golf Links.
It has achieved global acclaim in its first six years and was placed at No. 56 on Golf Magazine's Top 100 Courses in the World in 2013.
It staged the Scottish Open for three successive years from 2011-2013, with the 2013 championship, won by Phil Mickelson, reaching a worldwide television audience of more than 500 million, including weekend live coverage on NBC USA.
The championship, sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management and the Scottish Government, will return to Castle Stuart in July, 2016.
Castle Stuart Golf Links opens for the 2015 season on Friday, 27 March.

HAMISH McNAUGHTON WINS WLM

GOLF CLASS 2 H/CAP ORDER OF MERIT

Hamish McNaughton (Cruden Bay), the long-time leader in the WLM Golf-sponsored Class 2 of the Handicap Order of Merit at the North-east Alliance, topped the final table by 175pt, writes Colin Farquharson.

None of the leading Class 2 players scored points in the final counting fixture, the second round of the championship at Craibstone Golf Club on Wednesday.
The pressure was on second-placed Ben Lumsden (Northern) to mount a last-day challenge but it was not to be.
Thanks to self-employed teaching pro Willie McKenzie for his company WLM Golf's sponsorship of both Classes in the Handicap Order of Merit.

Willie could not be at Craibstone on Wednesday to present the £50 amateur voucher to Hamish so Craibstone Golf Club General Manager Billy Sim did the honours on his behalf. Hamish is on the left and Billy on the right on the above picture.
And thanks also to the NE Alliance captain, Joel Hopwood, the Senior Assistant Professional at Royal Aberdeen GC, for keeping the tables up todate and supplying them to Scottishgolfview.com every week.

FLEMING WINS WLM GOLF CLASS 1

HANDICAP ORDER OF MERIT

David Fleming (Portlethen) won the WLM Golf-sponsored North-east Alliance Class 1 Handicap Order of Merit with something to spare in the end, writes Colin Farquharson.

Second-placed David Mackay (Hazlehead), joint secretary of the Alliance, failed to mount a challenge at Craibstone with a points-scoring performance in the second round of the championship.
Only the top five and ties in the Class 1 returns scored points in this season-long competition on a 250-200-150-100-50 scale.
Fleming started the final counting event with a 75pt lead over Mackay and that's how it finished because neither scored any additional points at Craibstone on Wednesday.
Charlie Cassie (Nigg Bay), who headed the Class 1 net returns at Craibstone with a net 64 off seven, leapfrogged over Martin Forster (Cruden Bay) to fill third place on 850pt in the final standings.
Many thanks to self-employed teaching pro Willie McKenzie for his company WLM Golf's sponsorship of the first prizes for both Handicap categories of the Order of Merit.

And thanks also to Alliance captain Joel Hopwood, the Senior Assistant Professional at Royal Aberdeen, for devising the Merit points scheme and updating the tables weekly for Scottishgolfview.com
Willie McKenzie was unable to be there to hand over the £50 amateur voucher to David Fleming so Craibstone Golf Club General Manager Billy Sim deputised. Picture above (that's David on the left, Billy on the right).
