LONDONER DAVIS HITS THE US TOUR HEADLINES

FOR A CHANGE - LEADS VALSPAR TOURNAMENT

Londoner Brian Davis, the Brit who campaigns on the US PGA Tour with the minimum of publicity, is leading the field with a seven-under-par 65 in the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook, Palm Harbour, Florida.
Davis (pictured)  has a one-shot advantage over Sean O'Hair and Ricky Barnes.
CBS Sports.com reports: Brian Davis takes pride in his short game, which saved him from a rough finish Thursday and gave him the lead in the Valspar Championship.
Coming off back-to-back bogeys, Davis chipped in from 25 feet on the ninth green at Innisbrook for a 6-under 65, giving him a one-shot lead over past champion Sean O'Hair and Ricky Barnes after the opening round.

For the 40-year-old Davis, it was the perfect finish to go with what had been an ideal start. Starting on the back nine of the Copperhead course, he missed three birdie chances inside 15 feet and still went out in 30.
There wasn't a hint of trouble until a three-putt from 45 feet on No. 7 and a poor chip at the par-3 eighth that led to bogey.
And right when he thought he had hit a good approach on No. 9, he heard nothing.
"I expected a clap and nobody clapped," he said.
His chip came out with more over-spin because of the grain in the grass and might have gone about 6 feet by the hole except that it struck the pin.
"Delighted," the Englishman said.
O'Hair got even more evidence that his game is turning around by making eight birdies in the morning for a 66. Barnes, playing in the afternoon, was tied for the lead until he three-putted the par-3 17th from 35 feet and missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the last hole.
Henrik Stenson, at No. 3 the highest-ranked player in the field, made his debut at Innisbrook by dressing in the same colours as the volunteers, though it wasn't intentional, and none of the volunteers had matching trousers to go with his periwinkle shirt.
The Swede didn't like the swing he had on the range, though he hit enough good iron shots early on to get by. Stenson hit wedge into the par-4 ninth for a final birdie and a bogey-free 67. He was in a group that included Justin Thomas and Puerto Rico Open winner Alex Cejka.
Thomas opened with nine straight pars, a bogey on the par-5 first hole, and then five birdies.
Stenson played with Adam Scott, who made four straight bogeys on his back nine that ruined a good round. He had a birdie on the final hole for a 71. Also in the group was Jordan Spieth, slowed by a double bogey in his round of 70.
"Fell asleep out there for about 30 minutes," Scott said.
The Copperhead course didn't have a lot of bite with its green, soft conditions. Thomas was among those who had mud on the golf ball, which led to his bogey at No. 1. It still was the sturdy test that makes it so popular. Even without much wind and a mostly overcast sky, the course average was about 71.4
"The golf course was there -- no wind and fairly soft -- so you have to try to make your score today if you could," Davis said.
It wasn't there for John Daly. He opened with a double bogey when he three-putted from 5 feet.
He later four-putted for triple bogey on the 14th hole.
A birdie on the final hole gave him an 81, but there was a sliver of good news at the end of his long day. He wasn't selected for drug testing.
"No, that's tomorrow," said Daly, with a grin.
He said on his SiriusXM radio show Tuesday that the PGA Tour didn't have random testing because he has been picked at Innisbrook the last six years.
O'Hair won at Innisbrook in 2008, though he has fallen on lean times. He has had to earn his card at the Web.com Tour Finals each of the last two years.
"The last two years have been disappointing for me," O'Hair said. "I lost really everything. I lost my ball-striking and kind of lost my mind, lost confidence as far as how I play the game because I like to hit a lot of different shots and I got very swing-oriented."
Padraig Harrington, in his first start since winning the Honda Classic, opened with a 76. ... Georgia Tech senior Ollie Schniederjans, in his first PGA Tour event, made a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole for an even-par 71.
Six players are tied for fourth place on 67.
Ian Poulter is on 68 (T10) while the two Scots, Russell Knox and Martin Laird are both on the 69 mark and sharing 18th place.

PEERLESS PAUL LEADS PLF PRO

SERIES AT PENINA

Paul Lawrie leads his own Paul Lawrie Foundation Pro Series - the official title -  a brilliant opening round of five-under-par 68 over the Henry Cotton Championship Course at Penina, near Portimao today, writes Colin Farquharson

Lawrie's bogey-free round was highlighted by five birdies - at the third, long fifth, ninth, long 10th and long 11th.
With the temperature around the 22 degrees mark and very little wind - in contrast to what the players left behind in Scotland - conditions were ideal for scoring
Greig Hutcheon, who knows the course well, having spent several winters practising over it,  is two shots off the pace in second place with a 70.
Third place on 71 is shared by Ross Kellett and Scott Henderson. There are 18 players in the field.
The tournament is over 54 holes, all at Penina.

BANCHORY TEACHING PRO AWARDED
PGA ADVANCED
STATUS FOR WORK
WITH JUNIORS
Banchory Golf Club teaching professional Steven Chalmers has been awarded PGA Advanced Status by the Professional Golfers Association for his hard work for developing junior golf in his home area.

This award is a nationally recognised award for excellence in the professional's field of endeavour, which is golf coaching in this case.
In 2014 Steven also:
Gained the PGA Level 3 coaching award

Gained the Advanced certificate in Golf Coaching at Birmingham University

Appointed a Scottish development coach in 2012, Chalmers has had  great success with his squad players winning and gaining entry into advanced squads
Chalmers' unique junior coaching programme is attracting record numbers. Around 100 juniors sign up for group coaching in 2014.
He says: "The secret is not to bore the kids with all the technical jargon. Coach the basics but let them have fun and discover how enjoyable golf can be.
"One of the big successes has been if we make a golf change we do it in a game format so the kids are having fun while learning a new skill. I also go in much more coaching on the golf course and games simulating on-course scenarios."
Steven believes in making sure the juniors have correct sized equipment and keeping them active during sessions.

"Inactivity during a session leads to a loss of focus and to boredom, which can lead to a possible drop-out in the future. I make sure all tasks and games are aimed at pupils' skill level and achievable tasks.
"If tasks are to hard and not achievable you again risk losing pupil interest. My big tip is to speak to juniors at their level and not  talking to them as mini-adults level i.e. keep what you say basic and to a minimum as kids do not understand commands as adults do.
"These are some guidelines I stick to all the time and have reaped the rewards as the golf programme numbers increase."

MADSEN, HORSEY SHARE TSHWANE OPEN LEAD WITH 63s

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Denmark’s Morten Ørum Madsen was an incredible four under par for his last two holes as he joined David Horsey in a share of the lead after the first round of the Tshwane Open in South Africa today.
Madsen, third in last week’s Africa Open, had a hole-in-one at the short eighth, then carded an eagle from 12 feet at the par five ninth – his last – to set the pace with a seven under par 63.

That was matched by England’s Horsey in the afternoon, as the three-time European Tour winner produced a flawless display.
Madsen claimed his maiden European Tour title on South African soil last season, and having started on the back nine and turned in a two under 33, holed a 30 footer at the first and responded to his only bogey of the day at the fourth with another gain at the sixth.

The former South African Open winner then spun his wedge to the eighth back into the hole for the 20th ace on The European Tour this season, and closed out his day in style after an excellent three iron approach at the ninth.
The last couple of weeks I’ve been hitting some shots really close and I actually said to my caddy last week that a hole in one is on the cards pretty soon,” said Madsen.
“Luckily for me it came today. I hit a fantastic shot, I couldn’t hit it better, and it spun back into the hole. That was only my second hole in one and it’s really special to have one in competition on The European Tour.

When you stand on the next tee you’re pretty pumped and confident. I succeeded in gathering my thoughts and hit a really nice drive and then a great second shot and then sank it, which was a fantastic way to finish. It was the kind of thing you dream about, but don’t expect.
“Today was a great day and I had a lot of fun out there.
“I’ve found something in my game that’s working and I’ve been pretty consistent.”

Horsey turned in a three under par 32, and some immaculate iron play on the way in saw him card gains from inside five feet at the 12th, 14th and 17th, as well as holing a 40 foot effort on the 16th.
“This place demands a bit more than just long hitting,” he said. “It’s nice to play golf courses that make you think a bit more than just taking driver on every tee.
“I plotted my way around, because it’s very much a positional golf course. On the whole I’m very pleased with today’s work.”

The leaders were a shot clear of South African Wallie Coetsee – a runner-up in the Joburg Open a fortnight ago – and Australian Brett Rumford, with Keith Horne, Merrick Bremner, Dean Burmester and Raphael Jacquelin tied for fifth on five under.
The highlight of Coetsee’s 64 came when he pitched in for eagle at the 12th, and he chipped in again at the 17th for one of five birdies.
“Today was special,” said Coetsee. “Things went my way but I’m doing something right. These three weeks have been very special.”
Last week’s winner Trevor Fisher Jnr was in contention after a four under 66, while defending champion Ross Fisher was one under and Andy Sullivan – looking for a third title on South African soil this season – shot a one over 71.

Brimmond Bistro NE Alliance Scratch Order of Merit

HOPWOOD, VANNET AND ROBERTSON IN

THREE-WAY FIGHT FOR 2nd & 3rd PRIZES

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
John Duff is home and dry as winner of the Brimmond Bistro North-east Alliance Scratch Order of Merit.
But the second and third prizes sponsored by the Craibstone Golf Club's in-house restaurant - open every day to members of the public - will not be settled until Joel Hopwood, Lee Vannet and Tony Robertson sink their last putts in the second round of the championship at Craibstone next Wednesday.
Hopwood, the Senior Assistant Professional at Royal Aberdeen, needs a solid finish to consolidate his current second in table position.
It's Vannet, the teaching pro at Craibstone, and reinstated Murcar Links assistant pro Robertson, now an amateur at Peterculter, who have to do the chasing over the final 18 holes.
If either Vannet or Robertson were to earn the maximum one-week points award of 500 for having the best scratch score at Craibstone, then they would leapfrog Hopwood into second place, always presuming that Joel does not score enough additional points to hold him at bay.
It's an interesting situation.
Vote of thanks to the Brimmond Bistro for its sponsorship and also to Joel Hopwood himself for devising the Order of Merit points scheme and updating the tables every week for Scottishgolfview.com
Tomorrow we'll tell you who are favourites to win the two £50 amateur vouchers as winners of Class 1 and Class 2 in the Handicap Order of Merit, sponsored by teaching pro Willie McKenzie and his WLM Golf Company.
