North-east Alliance Class 1 Handicap Order of Merit

MACKAY PUTTING PRESSURE ON
FLEMING AT TOP OF TABLE

  By COLIN FARQUHARSON, Colin@scottishgolfvoew.com
Only two counting events to go and it's building up to an exciting finish to the North-east Golfers' Alliance Class 1 Handicap Order of Merit, sponsored by Willie McKenzie's WLM Golf company.
Only the winner gets a prize and it could be any one of the top four or five if they can produce the goods at either or both the last two
counting fixtures - Duff House Royal next Wednesday and Craibstone on March 18.

Alliance joint sec Dave Mackay (Hazlehead) has hit a rich seam of form and is now breathing down the neck of long time leader David Fleming (Portlethen).
There are only 75pt separating first from second and with points going to the five (and ties) Class 1 handicap prizewinners (250-200-150-100-50), it could go either way.
And let's not rule out the players immediately below the top two contenders: Martin Forster (Cruden Bay), Harry Roulston (Stonehaven) and Phil Morrison (Oldmeldrum). One or even two
victories over the two championship fixtures could transform their fortunes.
Go for it, men!
Although they are not going to win the WLM Golf £50 amateur voueher, congratulations to Aboyne's Alistair Graham  and Newburgh's Gordon Milne for being the climbers of the week.
Alisair improved eight spots in the table to No 9 while Gordon went up 12 places to No 22.
If you are not happy with your scoring, Willie McKenzie can be contacted on his mobile phone, 07984 756332 if you want to fix up some lessons from to improve your game. He can also be contacted through his website, WLMgolf.com

Holmes tames Blue Monster with impressive 10-under 62

DORAL, Florida  – Firing a 62 on the US PGA Tour is nothing new, or even unusual.
There already have been 13 rounds of 62 in the wraparound 2015 season, after 21 such scores were posted in 2014.
But what J.B. Holmes did on Thursday at the WGC-Cadillac Championship was remarkable. He dominated an elite field and the incredibly difficult Trump National Doral to the tune of a 10-under 62, four shots better than anyone else in the field.
“That's always a good measure of a round - how many shots did you beat the rest of the field by,” Jim Furyk said.
“If you shoot 62 and there's like three 63s and a 64, it's still a hell of a round. But when you separate yourself from the field – and a really strong field – by four, it's a great round of golf. “
In 2014, Doral's Blue Monster had a scoring average of 73.852, with a pair of 66s from Tiger Woods and Jonas Blixt the lowest rounds of the tournament.
So not only was Holmes four shots better than Ryan Moore on Thursday, but he also set a new benchmark on the course that was made longer and more difficult by course designer Gil Hanse before the 2014 event.
“I didn't see 8 under out there," Jimmy Walker said. “To see two guys up there kind of distancing themselves, that can happen, but I just didn't see it. You get a hard golf course, somebody's on, really on, you can't stop somebody when they're on. You just can't.”
Holmes was definitely "on," posting a bogey-free round that included an eagle and eight birdies.
Of the nine holes that Holmes parred, eight were on putts of 2 feet or less. Only a 21-foot bomb on the par-3 ninth stood out as an anomaly.
“A bunch of people have been saying, 'What course was I playing?' " Holmes said. “Had a lot of fun and didn't have too many stressful putts. If I didn't make it, it was in there pretty close, so I didn't have a whole bunch of 4‑ or 5‑footers.”
Moore, who was playing with a tweak to his swing and a new putter, also rattled off eight birdies, but a double bogey at the par-4 18th put a late damper on his round.
“I was obviously giving myself good, reasonable birdie chances,” Moore said. “Controlled my ball really nicely today, probably for about 13, 14 holes. Honestly, 15 or 16 for that matter. Hit a couple bad shots coming in, but I controlled the ball nice, but I was putting great.”
Holmes' 62 is one shot off the Blue Monster record set by Stephen Ames in 2000, but that tournament was not in the WGC rotation and was simply a regular Tour stop (Doral-Ryder Open). The scoring average in 2000 was 70.563; Thursday's average was 73.400.
“A four‑shot lead is great the first day,” Furyk said. “Even J.B. realises it's the first day. We'd all like to be in that position, trust me, but there's a lot of golf to be played."

  • 1. The field average was 73.402
  • 2. Maintaining its ferocious reputation, the par-4 18th was toughest, at a 4.603 field average. Only three birdies were made – by Alexander Levy, Charley Hoffman and Ross Fisher.
  • 3. Phil Mickelson failed to make a birdie in his 2-over 74, a round that included two penalty drops on par 5s, one at the 12th, one at the eighth.
  • 4. World No. 1 Rory McIlroy shot 73 and is now 6 over for five rounds on the redesigned Blue Monster.
  • 5. There were more bogeys, double-bogeys, and “others” (281) than birdies and eagles (245).
  • 6. Brandt Snedeker, Bill Haas, Webb Simpson and Ian Poulter had 74s. Jordan Spieth and Hunter Mahan had 75s. Chris Kirk, Zach Johnson and Jason Day 76s.
  • 7. Patrick Reed raced to 4 under on Day 1 last year, only to play the next 54 holes in level par to hang on.
  • 8. Graeme McDowell was 1 under when he pulled his tee shot left into a bunker at his 18th hole, the par-3 ninth, then blasted his second shot into the water. He made double-bogey to shoot 73.
  • 9. Ian Poulter’s water woes travelled with him from the Honda Classic. He drove it wide right at the par-4 third and got wet, though he recovered for a bogey.
  • 10. At one point on his outward nine, Hideki Matsuyama made five consecutive bogeys. He wound up shooting 76.

+Scotland's Stephen Gallacher had a nightmare round of 84 - 22 shots more than J B Holmes.

There are age group prizes and separate order of merit titles on a handicap basis and for members over the age of 65.

GAVIN DEAR REINSTATED TO AMATEUR

RANKS

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Gavin Dear, who teamed up with Wallace Booth and Callum Macaulay to win the world amateur team golf championship for the Eisenhower Trophy in Australia in 2008, has been resinstated to the amateur ranks after a pro career that never got off the ground.

Dear, pictured, played successfully for four years on US college circuit as a student at Lynn University, Boca Raton and turned pro shortly afterwards.
"I can confirm I have been reinstated as an amateur and am in the process of getting a handicap," said Dear who hails from Scone, near Perth.

"The decision to apply for reinstatement was quite simple because I am not a PGA professional and it would have been very difficult for me to continue to play. Returning to the amateur game allows me to play competitions and contribute to the game.

"I have already been involved in a Perth and Kinross county squad gathering and enjoyed playing again (apart from the snow). I am yet to decide how much I will play this year as I am very busy working at Golf Scholars, Shot Scope and golphinforkids but will hopefully manage to play in the Scottish amateur match-play championship at Muirfield at the end of July.".

SCRATCH  MERIT TITLE WITH 2 EVENTS STILL TO GO

Still two counting events to go but Newmachar's John Duff has won the first prize in the Brimmond Bistro North-east Golfers' Alliance Scratch Order of Merit, writes Colin Farquharson

John's second place finish at Oldmeldrum on Wednesday increased his lead at the top of the points table to 1371.92 over second-placed Joel Hopwood, the Senior Assistant Professional at Royal Aberdeen.
With 500pt the maximum points available at each weekly meeting, that means Duff, pictured right, is in an unassailable position after a consistent campaign which has brought him three victories and numerous top five and 10 finishes.
Well done, John! He will receive a £120 amateur voucher from Craibstone Golf Club's Brimmond Bistro, the open-to-the-public restaurant within the Craibstone clubhouse.
But, for Messrs Hopwood, Lee Vannet, the Craibstone teaching pro, and Peterculter amateur Tony Robertson, there is still plenty to play for.
The second and third-places in the final Scratch table must be filled by two of that trio. No-one can gatecrash ther party by winning enough points at the championship fixtures at Duff House Royal GC next Wednesday and Craibstone on March 18.
The biggest climbers of the week in the Scratch points table were the Wednesday winner, Justin Duff (Fraserburgh) and Scott Mackie Hazlehead.  Justin jumped 26 places from 55th to 29th while Scott went up from 90th to 61st, a leap of 29 places.
Pity they have not been able to play in more of the weekly fixtures.
It was only Justin Duff's second appearance of the season due to his
offshore work on the rigs.
Thanks to the Brimmond Bistro for their sponsorship of the Scratch Order of Merit and to Joel Hopwood, the man who devised the points scheme (top 20 scratch returns earn from 500 down to 20pts
weekly) and who updates the points table for Scottishgolfview.com
Don't miss tomorrow's update on the Class 1 Handicap table, sponsored by teaching pro Willie McKenzie and his company WLM Golf.
