ROUGH START FOR RORY - 73 IN HONDA CLASSIC

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Florida – A search party of marshals and spectators at the Honda Classic could not find Rory McIlroy’s first tee shot in his first start of this US PGA Tour season.
After watching heavy, gusting winds push his 2-iron right and into trouble, McIlroy bravely forced his way into the thick, native vegetation at PGA National, looking for his ball in places only snakes and possums get comfortable. He ended up having to jog all the way back to the tee box to re-tee.
A double bogey wasn’t exactly the way the world No. 1 envisioned starting the Tour season.
“The conditions, obviously, were very tricky from the start,” McIlroy said.
McIlroy made another double bogey at the fifth hole, pulling his tee shot there into a pond.

In the end, though, McIlroy managed a smile after closing with a pair of birdies to shoot a 3-over-par 73.
“I feel like I salvaged something out of the round the last couple holes,” McIlroy said. “It was just a day to keep trying, not to give up, and know that anything around level or 1  or 2 over par still isn't out of it.”
Stepping up to the 16th tee, McIlroy was tied for 104th. With his little rally at the end, he walked away tied for 79th, eight shots off the lead.
“Wasn't quite what I wanted, but, hopefully, tomorrow morning we get calmer conditions and we're able to give ourselves a few more opportunities and make some birdies,” McIlroy said.
The winds were up right from day’s start, but they were toughest in the afternoon, with gusts up to 34 mph. Scores were on average more than a full shot higher in the afternoon.
McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka, the featured afternoon grouping, got beat up by Mother Nature.
McIlroy’s 73 was the low round of the group. Johnson shot 77 and Koepka 78.
At one point, the threesome was collectively 20 over par.
“It was tough,” McIlroy said. “When nothing's going your way, and you don't really have anything to feed off, you don't see many good shots, and we're all struggling. It was a grind out there. We'll all go home and put our feet up tonight and get ready for tomorrow.”
With winds even affecting putts, McIlroy wasn’t beating himself up after the round.
“Not at all,” he said. “I'm coming off a three-week break, and tough conditions to come back out in.  I knew that my game is there. Today wasn't, obviously, what I wanted to start with, but you know, if I can get it into red numbers tomorrow, I'm right back in the tournament.”
McIlroy is making his first start since winning the European Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic almost a month ago. He teed it up this week on a tear that extends back into last summer, when he won the Open, WGC-Bridgestone and US PGA Championship in consecutive starts. He has a victory and four second-place finishes in his last five starts.
There was something else McIlroy found to be upbeat about. His 73 was a shot better than he posted in the final round last year, when he couldn’t protect a 54-hole lead and lost in a play-off.
“So it’s a little bit of an accomplishment,” McIlroy cracked.
McIlroy won the Honda Classic three years ago, holding off a Sunday charge by Tiger Woods.
About that rough start Thursday, McIlroy said the wind fooled him. He wasn’t alone. Johnson also hit his opening tee shot over in the thick brush but was able to chip out.
“I felt like the wind was more into us, but once the ball, even Dustin's ball, once it got out there, the wind just took it to the right,” McIlroy said. “I was just trying to play a normal sort of straight shot there.”
Nothing was going straight in Thursday’s winds, until they started dying down near day’s end. McIlroy took advantage when they did late. He hit a 5-iron to 50 feet at the last hole.
“Two-putt and get out of there,” McIlroy said.
Russell Knox, beaten in a three-man play-off at last year's Honda Classic, has made a solid start to the 2015 tournament.
He has returned a one-under-par 69 which is four strokes behind
the leader, Jim Herman, and sees the Scot start Day 2 in a tie for 13th place.
The other Scot in the field, Stephen Gallacher, is alongside McIlroy  and Co on the 73 mark.

SCOTS CHALLENGE WIPED OUT IN SPAIN

No Scots have made it through to the match-play stages of the Spanish men's open amateur golf championship at Jerez Golf Club, writes Colin Farquharson.

Nick Macandrew (Royal Aberdeen), pictured, 76-79 and Fraser Moore (Glenbervie) 78-77 both totalled 155 in the 36-hole stroke-play qualifying test - six shots over the limit mark for being among the 32 qualifiers.
Former Scottish champion Alexander Culverwell (Dunbar) shot 75 and 82 for 157.

In contrast, England provide the No 2 seed, Michael Saunders with 71-69, and the No 4 seed, Jonathan Thomson 69-71.
Saunders, Thomson and Viktor Hovland and Spanish ace Ivan Cantero tied at the top of the leaderboard on four-under-par 140.
Hovland had the best second round of the quartet, a 67, which earned him top seeding.
Cantero's second-round 70 gave him the No 3 seed berth.
Irishman Gavin Moynihan, winner of the Scottish open amateur stroke-play title at Panmure last summer, made it to the match-play with a stroke to spare. He had rounds of 78-70.

VANNET-ROBERTSON DOG FIGHT FOR THIRD PLACE

IN BRIMMOND BISTRO NE ALLIANCE SCRATCH MERIT

Only three events to go in the Brimmond Bistro North-east Alliance Scratch Order of Merit - the Race to Craibstone, writes Colin Farquharson.
With a lead of close on 1,000pt, Newmachar amateur John Duff looks almost certain to be the winner of the first prize, worth about £150 - he would, of course, receive the award in the form of an amateur voucher prize from the sponsors, the open-to-the-public restaurant in the Craibstone Golf Club restaurant.
The top three points totals in the Scratch Order of Merit after the
second round of the championship at Craibstone GC on March 18 will earn prizes from the Brimmond Bistro
Alliance captain Joel Hopwood, the Senior Assistant Professional at Royal Aberdeen GC - the man who devised the points scheme and updates the points every week for Scottishgolfview.com - should make it over the winning line in second place.
But Craibstone Golf Academy teaching pro Lee Vannet and Wednesday's winner at Peterhead, Peterculter amateur Tony Robertson will have other thoughts about that as they engage
in a dog fight for third place, if not higher.
Vannet has a lead of only 79pt over the fast-fishing Robertson and it will be interesting to see how that duel progresses over the fixtures at Oldmeldrum next Wednesday and the 36-hole championship at Duff House Royal (March 11) and Craibstone Golf Club (March 18).

The biggest climber within the top 20 this week was young pro Sam Kiloh (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) from Portlethen. He jumped up eight plaees to No 10 in the table. Sam is pictured on the left.
Another PLGC pro, Azerbaijan-born Kamran Zeynalov, and Portlethen amateur David Fleming both improved their position by
six places, Kamran to No 19 and David to No 27.
Hazlehead amateur Brian Nicolson went up five spots to No 11.
The "kangaroos" - big jumpers - outwith the top 20 were former Newburgh pro Ian Bratton (Bratton Golf) and Les Fowler (Royal Aberdeen). They both shot up 17 places on the back of their Peterhead performances to positions 87 and 88 in the table.
Well done, lads! Keep practising!

Points are awarded weekly to the players with the top 20 scratch scores from a 1-2-3 of 500-450-400 down to 20pt for 20th place.
