DANIEL AIRENS WINS EDINBURGH AND EAST
ALLIANCE PATERSON MEDAL AT CRAIGIELAW
FROM ALAN GREENSHIELDS
Edinburgh and East of Scotland Alliance
On a day of much kinder weather with sunshine and blue sky as play got underway, 84 members of the East Alliance visited Craigielaw to try and get their name on the Paterson Medal.
On both the Scratch and Handicap fronts the winning scores were of high standard on the par 71 course.
Winner of the Paterson Medal with a superb net 64 (74 less 10) was Daniel Airens of Falkirk Tryst with an impressive level par back nine.
Second handicap prize, six shots behind, was scratch man Colin Fraser (Peebles) with an impressive scratch and net score of 70.
Third place was split on net 71 betweem Jimmy Rankeillor of Baberton (82 less 11) and Richard Stott of Prestonfield (76 less 5).
Top scratch score came from Bathgate assistant Louis Gaughan with an excellent, four-under- par 67, made up of a solid level par 35 on front nine but it was his four-under-par back nine of 32 that sealed the best score of the day.
Two shots behind Louis on 69 were Chris Morris (Kingsknowe) and Andrew Oldcorn (Kings Acre).
Top Trainee prize was shared on 72 by Jamie Fraser (Renaissance Club) and Ross Munro (Duddingston).
On the Senior front top prize went to George Wither (Duddingston) with a net 73 (75 less 2).
The Scratch Order of Merit see no change in the top three with the points now -
1. Chris Morris (Kingsknowe) - 581.0
2. Ryan Buckley (Royal Musselburgh) - 498.5
3. Craig Gordon (Edinburgh Golf Centre) - 492.0
In the Handicap Order of Merit Daniel Airens built on his lead but there are some changes below him -
1. Daniel Airens (Falkirk Tryst) - 159.5
2. Walter Forsyth (Peebles) - 145.5
3. Martin Rennie (Uphall) - 138.5
Next week the East head west to Falkirk Tryst for the penultimate outing before the annual championship at Gullane on March 25.

Hard to see the logic in Duddingston's
no-support move for SGU/SLGA merger
FROM AILEEN HUNTER
I saw The Scotsman article you published about Duddingston
withdrawing support for the SGU/SLGA amalgamation.
They may be having a
lady captain next year but I see they failed to mention the ladies'
county associations who also have a vote.
I don't understand why the
larger men's areas, such as the Lothians, should feel hard done by here.
Every club gets a vote - and
therefore, by default the golfing area of Lothian would have a far
bigger say than somewhere like Clackmannanshire where there are fewer
clubs and therefore fewer members.
I don't hear them saying that Duddingston Golf Club should have
fewer votes than a club that has double their membership!
EDITOR: Anyone else like to comment on this topic? It seems strange to me that Duddingston ARE in favour of the SGU-SLGA merger but feel strongly enough on a completely different topic, i.e.
area votes, to withdraw their support. Labels: SGU, SLGA
Peterculter amateur prevails at Peterhead
TONY ROBERTSON WINS FOR THIRD TIME
ON N.E. ALLIANCE CIRCUIT THIS SEASON
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Peterculter
amateur Tony Robertson chalked up his third win on this season's
North-east Golfers' Alliance service with a four-under-par 66 (33-33) at
Peterhead today
Robertson, pictured, reinstated since his days as an assistant when Alan
White was club professional at Murcar, shot seven birdies in halves of 33, the vital ones
coming at the 17th and 18th.
That ensured he headed a field of 70 by
a shot from Newmachar amateur John Duff (33-34), who also birdied the
last two holes, and Sam Kiloh 33-34) , an improving young pro from the
Paul Lawrie Golf Centre stable.
Craibstone teaching pro Lee Vannet
had the best inward half of three-under 32 and that enabled him to tie
for fourth place with Azerbaijan-born pro Kamran Zeynalov (Paul Lawrie
Golf Centre) and Hazlehead amateur Brian Nicolson.
Royal Aberdeen
amateur Stewart Finnie, a past Aberdeen Links champion, had the best
outward half of three-under 32 but took 39 blows to get back to the
clubhouse and tied for 10th place.
