FRED COUPLES  NOT BITTER THAT DAVIS LOVE IS TO

BE USA RYDER CUP CAPTAIN IN 2016

 FROM GOLF.COM
By Jason Sobell
LOS ANGELES – Fred Couples wanted to be the next U.S. Ryder Cup captain. But if it wasn’t going to be him, he holds no bitterness over the role going to longtime friend Davis Love III.
“I was in Chicago with Davis, he did a phenomenal job,” Couples told Golf Channel on Wednesday. “I was shooting to give myself a shot at doing that. I feel like it’s a great honor to be a part of. But again, they chose a great guy in Davis.

"He deserves it. In maybe a couple of years down the line, I’ll have another shot at it. I’m not bitter or upset or anything like that, because in my opinion they picked a great guy. “
Couples intimated that he was considered for the position, reiterating that he had conversations with the PGA of America less than two months ago.
“I talked to [PGA CEO] Pete Bevacqua around Christmastime,” he said. “I’m not pushing myself on anyone. He told me, ‘I’ll get back in touch with you,’ and it would be a while, because they were going to think about it. But they have a task force … trying to find the right guy.
“And to be honest with you, I will tell you that if it was maybe not Davis, I might have a different attitude toward this, but he’s been my friend for 30 years and I’m very happy for him. I have no bitterness at all.

"The PGA, they do their own thing and they do it very well. We just have to win the thing in Minnesota, that’s pretty much what anyone cares about.

RETIEF GOOSEN CLICKETY-CLICKS IN NORTHERN

TRUST OPEN WITH FIVE-UNDER-PAR ROUND

FROM GOLF.COM
By Jason Sobel
LOS ANGELES – Retief Goosen just turned 46 years old. He’s more than a decade removed from his second of two major victories and a half-decade from his last US PGA Tour triumph.
But in an era increasingly dominated by players nearly half his age, the South African proved Thursday that he’s still got plenty of game.
Goosen posted a 5-under 66 in the opening round of the Northern Trust Open, carding seven birdies against just two bogeys.
“Today was nice, I hit a lot of good shots that ended up good, which helps,” he explained with a smile. “But that was mainly the putter today. I made a lot of good putts, a couple of good par saves here and there, like I say, on No. 2 and 8 was good par saves from about 10, 12 feet. So those sort of putts keeps your round going.”
Goosen insisted that he played well during a 53rd-place finish at Torrey Pines in his most recent start but just got unlucky. On Thursday, the luck went his way.
“I would say I've not been putting so well. I putted pretty poorly at the Humana. But then I changed the loft on my putter a little bit. I took a little bit of loft off it and it seems to sit a little better. Like I say, at Torrey, I felt like I was starting to make a few good strokes. Although I wasn't making much, but just felt like the putter was sitting nice for me, and today especially, you get those days when you put a putter down it's aiming where you want it to go.”

CHAWRASIA IS LOCAL HERO IN INDIAN OPEN

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
S S P Chawrasia continued his excellent record in European Tour events on home soil as he claimed a share of the first-round lead at the Hero Indian Open at Delhi Golf Club.
Both of the 36 year old’s previous European Tour wins came in India, and a flawless 66 saw Chawrasia again setting the pace alongside playing partner and in-form Canadian Richard T Lee, Bangladeshi Siddikur Rahman, Sweden’s Joakim Lagergren and Chapchai Nirat of Thailand.
Lee, a regular on the co-sanctioning Asian Tour, finished fourth in Thailand last week and fifth in Malaysia the week before and continued in the same vein with four gains in an outward 31.
Further birdies at the first and sixth saw the 24 year old join Chawrasia on six under par, before Rahman, Lagergren and Nirat joined the six under par party later in afternoon.
Player Quotes
S S P Chawrasia: “I played very well and was bogey free. I made some good putts and was hitting it good off the tees. It looked easy but it wasn’t!  I’ve played here many times so I know how to play this course. Richard was playing well as well so it was fun to play with him. This is my National Open and all the Indian golfers enjoy playing in this event. I’m not thinking too much on the course, I’m just enjoying myself. All my family and friends are here so that’s nice; I’m playing well and I have good memories here. It wasn’t very windy in the morning so that made things easier. The wind started to pick up after a few holes but I’m used to play in these conditions.”
Richard T Lee: “It’s a really challenging course out there so to finish the day with six birdies and no bogeys is some pretty good golf. You have to hit the right shots at the right times and I managed to make a few putts too. I like playing tight courses like this one. There was a pretty strong breeze out there today as well so when I am playing in those conditions it kind of helps me concentrate a little more. I like challenging courses. It takes a little time to get used to playing so many different courses and conditions. I played great in Malaysia and Thailand but the challenge there was so different. Here it’s tight and bouncy so to play well here after the last two weeks is pretty satisfying.”
Siddikur Rahman:
“I played really good golf and made some long putts. My hitting was perfect so that was good. I always look forward to returning to the Delhi Golf Club. This is my favourite course. This is a tight and narrow golf course. I’m a very accurate player so I really like this type of course. You always see me in good positions when I play here. You have to plan your shots here and I know what to do here. I’m very excited to see my name on top the leaderboard. I injured my back last year and it is still bothering me. I hope I will be able to carry on my good form.”
Chapchai Nirat: “My iron and putting were good. I struggled with a shoulder (left) injury and I couldn’t hit the ball at all. I retired in Malaysia and missed the cut in Thailand last week because of the injury. I injured my shoulder in the gym and because I practised too much. I feel better now but it was slightly sore today. I have very good memories in India because I won in 2009 and set the world 72-hole scoring record. This week is important because I have a chance to win again.”
Joakim Lagergren: “That was a really good score. It’s not easy out there because it is such a tight course so I am very happy that everything worked for me today. I didn’t hit a single driver today and will not hit one all week because it is such a tight course. I took two months off from golf because I was so busy last year that I needed to rest and have some time off. It’s going to be a busy week so it was nice to be able to take a break.”

Craig Lee, the only Scot in the field, had a two-over-par 73 and is T80

COACH OF THE YEAR TO RECEIVE BOB TORRANCE

MEMORIAL TROPHY IN EDINBURGH NEXT MONTH

SGU NEWS RELEASE
Next month’s Scottish Golf Awards will pay tribute to the legacy of the late Bob Torrance with the creation of an annual coaching award in his honour.
‘The Bob Torrance Coach of the Year Award’, will be presented for the first time at this year’s showpiece event in Edinburgh on Friday March 20, in memory of the legendary coach who passed away last July.
Bob’s son, Sam, the victorious 2002 Ryder Cup captain and a vice-captain under Paul McGinley for Europe’s win at Gleneagles in September, will fittingly present the inaugural award to a worthy recipient at the Corn Exchange venue next month.

sportscotland, the national agency for sport, will kindly sponsor the award.
Tributes poured in for Bob during last summer’s Open Championship after one of the greatest golf coaches in the history of the game lost his short battle with cancer, aged 82. The Largs legend helped Irishman Padraig Harrington win back-to-back Open titles in 2007 and 2008 and was coach to a host of other leading players, among them McGinley, Marc Warren, Stephen Gallacher and Sam, himself.
Torrance’s work also extended to the amateur game and he was the Scottish Golf Union’s national coach, influencing many up and coming players as well as younger coaches.
‘The Bob Torrance Coach of the Year Award’ will now be presented annually to a male or female PGA professional coach who is actively engaged in the teaching of golf in Scotland. They must have shown exceptional leadership and dedication to the game, as well as a level of success in their work.
Speaking of the Award, Sam Torrance said: “I’m hugely proud my father is to be remembered in this way on an annual basis at the Scottish Golf Awards. It’s a wonderful tribute to his work over so many years and I thank the Scottish Golf Union and the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association for incorporating this award into what is a great event.
“My father was one of the best coaches in the world and I’m sure there are many coaches who looked up to him and take inspiration from his work. I look forward to being in Edinburgh on  March 20 to present the award for the first time and I’m sure we’ll have a very worthy recipient.”

Tickets are still available for the 2015 Scottish Golf Awards, co-hosted by BBC golf commentator Andrew Cotter and Sky broadcaster Caroline Henderson. The evening will look back on many achievements over the past 12 months, including Europe’s stunning Ryder Cup triumph at Gleneagles, while Torrance will join the likes of Stephen Gallacher, Catriona Matthew, Richie Ramsay, Bernard Gallacher and Kylie Walker in the star-studded line up.

Last year’s event raised more than £40,000 for the game’s good causes through the Scottish Golf Charity, with a sell-out crowd of 650 guests.

The coveted Player of the Year and Shot of the Year awards will be revealed on the night, as well as the RBS Junior Club and Volunteer of the Year Awards, which reward those who do so much work for golf in their local communities.

The SGU and the SLGA also honour the late Adam Hunter on an annual basis, an award created following the death in 2011 of the ex-European Tour player and coach. An up-and-coming young talent is the recipient each year, receiving a £500 grant towards their coaching and development.

JOHN DUFF DIGS IN AS
LEADER OF BRIMMOND BISTRO N.E. ALLIANCE SCRATCH ORDER OF MERIT

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
John Duff consolidated his position as the leader of the Brimmond Bistro-sponsored North-east Golfers' Alliance Scratch Order of Merit with his latest victory at Spey Bay yesterday.
The Newmachar amateur has a lead of over 600pt from second placed Joel Hopwood (Royal Aberdeen) with another professional, Craibstone Golf Academy teaching pro Lee Vannet in third place.
Can anyone catch Duff before the Orders of Merit wind up after the second round of the Alliance Championship at Craibstone on March 18?

The three players with the highest number of points at the end of play on March 18 will win either amateur vouchers or cash prizes (totalling in value £250) from Craibstone Golf Club's Brimmond Bistro, located inside the clubhouse and open to any members of the public daily. That's the famous Brimmond Burger that's picture.
The biggest climber in the top 20 after Spey Bay was Portlethen's Clark Brechin, up six places up to No 12.
Still outside the top 20 but Paul Lawrie Golf Centre staff pro Kamran Zeynalove climbed 11 places in the table to No 25.
If there's anything you don't understand about the Orders of Merit, E-mail Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Our thanks once again to Royal Aberdeen GC's Senior Assistant Professional Joel Hopwood for devising the Orders of Merit points scheme and for sending the updated points totals every week.
Tomorrow (Friday) we'll feature the Handicap Class 1 Order of Merit, sponsored by self-employed teaching pro Willie McKenzie's WLM Golf company.
