ANGLO-SCOT RYAN LUMSDEN SLUMPS IN

 PORTUGAL'S FINAL ROUND

Anglo Ryan Lumsden (Royal Wimbledon), the only Scot to make it through to the third and final round of the Portuguese men's international amateur championship at Montado Golf Resort, Palmela on the Costa Azul, had a disappointing final round of seven-over-par 79 to finish joint 40th on four-over 220.
His earlier rounds of 68 and 73 had him in contention for a top-10 finish but it was not to be. He dropped shots to par at regular intervals and had a double bogey 7 at the 15th in halves of 38-41.
Winner of the prestigious title was Paolo Ferraris (Italy) with rounds of 70, 67 and 68 for 11-under-205.
He won by two shots from Denmark's Christoffer Bring.
Double European champion Ashley Chesters, in the front rank with 18 holes to go, could do no better than a closing 74 for 210 and joint sixth place.
The tournament was reduced to three rounds when fog delayed the start of play until 12.30 on Friday, when 40 or so players still had to complete their second rounds.

WIZARD FROM OZ HEND TAKES OVER THAILAND

CLASSIC LEAD WITH BRILLIANT SIX-UNDER 66

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Australian Scott Hend will take a one-shot shot lead into Sunday's final round of the inaugural True Thailand Classic after a brilliant six under par 66 on day three.
The 42 year old, who won the Hong Kong Open in October, came within a whisker of an albatross at the par five 13th, tapping in for eagle en route to reaching 15 under 201 for the tournament, one clear of home favourite Thongchai Jaidee and veteran Spaniard Miguel Angel Jiménez, the overnight leader, who had respective rounds of 67 and 69 at Black Mountain Golf Club near Hua Hin.
Another home hope, Kiradech Aphibarnrat is two shots further back at 12 under after signing for a 70, while four players are 11 under – Australians Andrew Dodt, Richard Green and Wade Ormsby and Sweden’s Alex Noren.
Quotes
Scott Hend
“It was a good round and puts me in a good position. I played very solidly and putted quite well. I only made one mistake so it was pretty good. It was a nice long drive on 13 – it hit a wet patch from the rain and picked up a bit of speed down the hill. I hit a nice little five iron in there and got a good bounce on the fringe of the green. "I’m not sure how close it was to going in but it was nice to walk up there and see it very close. I did wonder if it had gone in when I heard the cheers – I couldn’t see the hole from where I was.
“This is where you want to be, in the last group on a Sunday. I’ll be playing with Thongchai again and Miguel so it’ll be a good little test tomorrow. I’m very lucky and privileged to be playing golf for a living and being in contention on Sundays is what we’re all trying to do.”
Thongchai Jaidee
“I played really well again. I hit 17 greens but my putting was still a problem. I gained confidence from the last hole. I need to practise my putting as it will be the key to winning this tournament. This course favours the long hitters.

"Look at Scott Hend, he was reaching in two shots on all the par fives with irons. On the 17th hole, he could reach the green from the tee. He has a big advantage over most of the players. I will need to use my accuracy.”
Miguel Angel Jiménez
“I only had three birdies but it was a bogey-free round. The last hole was close to being a birdie, but just missed. I’m playing well and hitting it well. I missed a few putts I’m creating lots of chances. I’ve played three rounds with Kiradech and tomorrow I’ll play with Thongchai – it’s good for the tournament to have the Thai guys in contention.”

BENNY IS ON HAMISH'S TAIL IN NE ALLIANCE CLASS

2 MERIT TABLE, SPONSORED BY WLM GOLF

Cruden Bay's 11-handicapper Hamish McNaughton, pictured below left, still leads Class 2 of the North-east Golfers' Alliance Handicap Order of Merit, sponsored by teaching professional Willie McKenzie and his WLM company, writes Colin Farquharson

But second-placed Benny Lumsden (Northern), who plays off nine, has made up a bit of ground and is now "only" 300pt behind the long-time leader
No change in the top five positions from last week.

The big climber in the top 20 was Kemnay's Steven Dillon who had a net 60 off 16 at Murcar Links and has risen six places in the table to the No 8 spot.
Steven had a net 60 off his 16 handicap on Wednesday.
The Orders of Merit will end at the conclusion of the Alliance two-round championship, that's at Craibstone, in March. The extra meeting, at Newburgh, which rings down the NE Alliance curtain on the 2014-15 season is a non-counter as far as Merit points are concerned.
Order of Merit points in Class 1 and 2 are awarded as follows at each fixture:
 POINTS BREAKDOWN
1ST: 250
2ND: 200
3RD: 150
4TH: 100
5TH: 50

+Thanks again to Joel Hopwood (Royal Aberdeen) for devising the Orders of Merit format and calculating the weekly points totals for Scottishgolfview.com
