SCOTLAND FINISH RUNNERS-UP AT JO'BURG

Scotland team (left to right): Calum Fyfe, Scott Gibson, Connor Syme, Ben Kinsley, Craig Ross, Danny Young, Ewen Ferguson, Jamie Savage, Greig Marchbank,David Orr (coach).

Golf was the ultimate winner in the annual International Triangular between the South African Golf Association’s Junior Team, the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) and a team from the Scottish Golf Union at Wanderers Golf Club, Johannesburg this week.
The SAGA Juniors amassed 15.5pts to claim the country’s third successive victory in the contest, while Scotland finished a close second with 13.5 points and the SAGDB finished with 7pt.

ACT OF KINDNESS
“All three teams enjoyed the tight contests, the close misses and fantastic saves, but I believe the happiest man on the day was Ewen Ferguson’s caddie, who left the course sporting a brand new pair of shiny white trainers and socks,” said South African Golf Integration Manager, Eden Thompson.
One of the caddies’ shoes had come apart between the upper and the sole and he had tied the two pieces together with a shoe lace. Ewen Ferguson noticed and, after the morning foursomes, took the caddie to the pro shop and treated him to new footwear.
“We are very proud of the SAGA Junior Team who achieved the first hat-trick in this competition. However it was this small act of kindness from Ewen and the camaraderie and sportsmanship shown by the 24 players that truly celebrated the unique values of the game of golf,” Thompson saidNice one, Ewen!

THREE SCOTS MAKE FINAL DAY IN MOGADOR OPEN

BUT McLEAN'S 69 FAILS TO BEAT CUT

Chris Robb and Philip McLean shot 68 and 69  respectively - two of the best second-round scores in the German PGA developmental tour's Mogador Open at Essaouira, Morocco today (Thursday).
Last year's Scottish amateur champion Robb, from Banchory, shares 18th place on 143 with another North-east player, Ross Cameron (73-70) from Ellon, seven shots behind German leader Anton Kirsten (65-71 for eight-under 136).
A third Scot to beat the cut was the Duke of Roxburghe's son, Ted Innes-Ker, who had a 73 for 145 and is sharing 26th place.
McLean's great effort to qualify for the final day - a six-birdie round with an inward half of 32 - failed by two shots. The Peterhead player's  first-round 80 was too big a burden and his total of 149 was two strokes over the limit mark.
Portlethen youngster Sam Kiloh missed the cut on 161 with scores of 83 and 78.

 MICHAEL HOEY'S COURSE-RECORD 64 LEADS

THAILAND CLASSIC - BUT ONLY BY ONE SHOT

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Ulsterman Michael Hoey shot a flawless course record eight under par 64 to set the pace in the first round of the inaugural True Thailand Classic presented by Black Mountain.

The five-time European Tour winner, pictured, leads by one stroke from American David Lipsky, who won last year’s Omega European Masters, and Asian Tour players Chien-yao Hung of Chinese Taipei and Spaniard Carlos Pigem.
India’s Shiv Kapur celebrated his 33rd birthday with a 66 to sit two shots back in fifth place, while Spanish legend Miguel Angel Jiménez had an eagle two in his round of 67, holing out from the fairway with a seven iron. He is joined by seven other players on five under par at Black Mountain Golf Club, near the coastal town of Hua Hin.

Quotes:

Michael Hoey
“I’m very happy with that. I know the course is scoreable because there’s not a lot of rough, but the wind picks up and the last few holes were tricky today. We probably had ten or 11 holes with no much wind, which was the advantage of teeing off early. It has been a long time since I had a bogey-free card. I was talking to my coaches recently about throwing in double bogeys too often, so to be bogey-free and have no fives on the card and a course record is a nice start. I putted well and it suits me that if you have a bit of length off the tee, you can cut a few corners and reach the par fives in two.”

Shiv Kapur
“It’s a nice present. You wake up in the morning hoping for a good day and I couldn’t have asked for a better result. It all comes down to holing a few putts and early on I managed to do that, which set the tone for the rest of the day. I also put a new driver in the bag this week and it seems to be working. It has put a little bit more length as I’m getting onto all the par fives, which I don’t remember doing here in the past. That made the difference.”

Miguel Angel Jiménez
“The course is not particularly difficult from the tee because there’s not much rough, but you need to be very precise with your approach shots. The greens are big with a lot of movement and very fast. If you’re in the wrong place on the green you are finished. I’m feeling very sick. I have a cold and my sinuses hurt. Sometimes I hit a poor shot because I can hardly move the club. I started feeling ill yesterday. Hopefully I’ll be better tomorrow.”

DUFF STILL No. 1 IN N-E ALLIANCE SCRATCH ORDER

OF MERIT, SPONSORED BY BRIMMOND BISTRO

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Newmachar amateur John Duff continues to lead in the North-east Alliance's Scratch Order of Merit, sponsored by Craibstone Golf Club's Brimmond Bistro clubhouse restaurant (that's the famous Brimmond Burger and chips pictured below). The Brimmond Bistro is not restricted to Craibstone GC members. Anyone can call in for a cup of tea and a scone or something more substantial).

John Duff has a 4,523pt tally with a handy lead over Royal Aberdeen pro Joel Hopwood (4,935) - the man who devised this format for the
orders of merit and also calculates the updated tables every week.
Craibstone teaching pro Lee Vannet is in third place with Peterculter amateur Tony Robertson in fourth spot.
Biggest movers following Wednesday's competition at Murcar Links were Phil Morrison (Oldmeldrum), up 14 places to 40th position and Cameron Grant (Portlethen), up 17 places to 41st.
Paul Lawrie Golf Centre teaching pro Billy Fyfe also had a good day on Wednesday, coming home in 31, the best of the day. Billy has gone up eight places to No. 34.
Another teaching pro, Keil Beveridge (Kippie Lodge) went up five places to No 25. His girl friend, Laura Murray (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) went up three places to No. 16
The Orders of Merit tables will end after the second round of the NE Alliance championship at Craibstone next month. The final fixture of
the season - at Newburgh - will not count for points.
The top three in the Scratch Order of Merit will divide the best part of £250 in cash or amateur vouchers, donated by the Brimmond Bistro.
On Friday, we will display the Class 1 Handicap Order of Merit and on Saturday you will be able to view the Class 2 Handicap table.
The Handicap Orders of Merit are sponsored by self-employed teaching pro Willie McKenzie's WLM Golf company.
