DAVID LAW SHOOTS A 68 AFTER FROST DELAY AT

MARRAKECH, MOROCCO!

If you think they don't suffer winter temperatures down in Africa, think again! writes Colin Farquharson.
The second round of the German PGA developmental tour's Al Maaden Open at Marrakech, Morocco (in North Africa) started 75min late after a severe overnight FROST!

Ted Innes Kerr was one of those who could not finish his second round before darkness halted play for the day. He had a 70 in the first-round.
Best effort by a Scot came from Northern Open champion David Law (pictured) who shot a four-under-par 68 to join rookie pro Chris Robb from Banchory in 12th place on five-under 139.
Paul Lawrie Golf Centre representative Law birdied the first, long, fourth, ninth, long 13th, 14th and shot 16th. He came storming home in only 33 shots. His two bogeys came at early par-3 holes, the third and sixth.
Robb, last year's Scottish amateur champion, had a 71, coming back from an outward half of 38 to birdie the 13th, 14th, 16th and 18th for a bogey-free inward half of 33.
Portlethen youngster Sam Kiloh shot a 73 - three birdies, four bogeys - for a share of 32nd place on 141.
Two Paul Lawrie players did not make it through to Saturday's third and final round - Ellon's Ross Cameron was six over the limit with a 74 for 148 and Peterhead's Philip McLean  had a 79 for 152.
At the top of the leaderboard it's all over bar the shouting. Frenchman Alexandre Kaleka is six shots clear with a brilliant 17-under-par tally of 127, made up of rounds of 62 and 65.

TIGER MADE $55million in 2014, ALMOST ALL OF IT

FROM ENDORSEMENTS
FROM ESPN.COM
Despite having his worst year on the course, Tiger Woods still made the most money in golf in 2014, according to the Golf Digest 50, an annual ranking of those making the most in the game.
Woods earned $55,110,775 in 2014, according to the magazine, with endorsements making up an astounding 98.8 percent of his take.
It's the least money Woods has earned in a single year since 2000, when the magazine says he made $49 million.
Woods, who has been at the top of the list for all 12 years it has been published, had three years -- from 2007 to 2009 -- where he made more than double what he made last year.

He pulled in $121.9 million in 2009, but took a huge slide after his extramarital affairs were revealed late that year.
Woods, who Golf Digest says has earned $1.37 billion since going pro in 1996, has picked up his endorsement activity of late.
He signed a deal with motorcycle and scooter company Hero MotorCorp in December, which is worth at least $6 million annually and a deal with MusclePharm replaced a deal with a company called Fuse, which went bust and failed to generate the return for Tiger he hoped for. Last month, Woods signed a deal with Sol Republic headphones.
Woods, since returning from back surgery has only finished one of the six US PGA Tour tournaments he has entered. He has withdrawn twice, including during the first round of the  Farmers Insurance Open yesterday, and missed the cut three times.
Not making money on the course could put his No. 1 spot in jeopardy for 2015.

Phil Mickelson takes the second spot with $50,738,019 in total earnings and Rory McIlroy, boosted by a huge Nike deal and $14.1 million in on course earnings, totalled $49.1 million in 2014, according to the magazine.
Eighty-five-year-old Arnold Palmer and 75-year-old Jack Nicklaus continued to bring in big money. The two placed three and four on the list with $40 million and $22 million respectively.
Rounding out the top 10 were FedEx Cup winner Billy Horschel ($18.2 million), Justin Rose ($18.2 million), Sergio Garcia ($15.8 million), Adam Scott ($15.2 million) and Bubba Watson ($15.1 million).

DAVID FLEMING TAKES OVER NE ALLIANCE CLASS 1

ORDER OF MERIT TOP SPOT

                                                                                                       By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Portlethen five-handicapper David Fleming, pictured,  has taken over the top spot in the North-east Golfers' Alliance Handicap Class 1 Order of Merit, sponsored by self-employed pro golf teacher Willie McKenzie's WLM Golf Company.
David finished fifth in his category with a net 68 at Montrose on Wednesday and the points he gained for that performance hoisted him above the previous table leader, Alliance joint secretary Dave Mackay (Hazlehead).
The points system used in the Alliance Order of Merit tables is devised and calculated each week by Alliance captain Joel Hopwood (Royal Aberdeen).
The Orders of Merit for the 2014-2015 season will conclude with the two-round championship meeting at Craibstone in March. The
"extra" fixture at Newburgh which will ring down the curtain on the Alliance season does not count for the Order of Merit.
We will display the Class 2 Order of Merit table tomorrow:

ROSS KELLETT JOINS PAUL LAWRIE STABLE

PAUL LAWRIE FOUNDATION NEWS RELEASE
The Paul Lawrie Foundation is delighted to announce that Ross Kellett has joined our group of supported professional golfers.
In addition to financial backing, to assist with the costs of competing, Foundation-supported players have personal access to Paul and can rely on his advice and vast experience to assist them as they make their way in the paid ranks.

Ross, pictured, gained his playing rights on the Challenge Tour in 2013, following a season finding his feet on the Alps Tour - one of the third-tier feeder tours.

His victory in the Italian Montecchia Open, which helped him to secure the top five spot necessary for graduation, was particularly notable since it happened the same week as the Aberdeeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Castle Stuart - he'd turned down a sponsors' invitation from Aberdeen in order to concentrate his efforts on the Alps' Order of Merit.
"I realised where my playing rights lay and didn't allow myself to get sidetracked by trying to also play Challenge Tour and European Tour events".
Paul was impressed by Ross during a recent event in Portugal, organised by the Foundation to give a number of Scotland's up-and-coming talents the opportunity to practise and compete against one another during the enforced winter lay-off at home.

A Colville Park Golf Club member as an amateur, the former Scottish international  and a member of  Scotland's 2009 men's European team championship-winning squad showed a level of dedication and maturity that chimed with Paul's own ethic for hard work and determination to succeed.
Kellett, who hails from Motherwell and is also supported by Paul's long-standing sponsor, Aberdeen Asset Management as well as the Blue Group, fell just shy of full playing-rights on Europe's secondary Tour for the season ahead.

His current ranking will give him in the region of eight to 10 automatic starts on the Challenge Tour.
Ross joins the likes of David Law, Greg McBain and Laura Murray who also receive support from the Foundation.
Kellett added:
"In addition to the financial support that the Foundation provides, to have the ability to contact Paul on anything golf related is invaluable.

"Paul is a class act on and off the course and to join his stable of supported players is a real honour.
"Being able to access the excellent facilities at the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre whenever I'm up in the North-east is also a fantastic benefit to my overall game.  I'm excited to get going with the season ahead."

LEAD AT HALFWAY

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Lee Westwood maintained a familiar position at the top of the Maybank Malaysian Open leaderboard with a five under par 67 in the second round for a halfway total of 13-under 133, but he has Alejandro Cañizares for company after the Spaniard birdied the last for a 65 and a share of the lead on 133.
The  41 year old Englishman has now led or co-led for the last six rounds at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, having completed a wire-to-wire victory in this event last season, and his strong affinity with the venue continued as he notched six birdies and a bogey.
A birdie from 18 feet on the last put him three clear at 11 under par, but Cañizares reeled him by birdieing three of his last four holes, a fine finish to a flawless round that featured seven birdies.
Austrian Bernd Wiesberger continued his fine form following three consecutive top six finishes in the Middle East prior to this event, carding a 66 to lie third, three strokes back from the leading duo.
Irishman Peter Lawrie, playing on a sponsor’s invite, had a welcome 66 to share third place with England’s Paul Waring (68), but it was a day to forget for Graeme McDowell, Westwood’s first round co-leader, who signed for a 73 to slip back to eighth place, six shots off the pace.
Grégory Bourdy of France provided one of the highlights of the second round by acing the 15th – his second hole-in-one of the week after doing the same on the eighth hole in Tuesday’s Pro-Am.

Quotes

Lee Westwood
“I played nicely again. It was pretty solid again and I probably only hit one poor shot all day, from the middle of the fairway on the fifth hole. I was going in with a five iron and blocked it right into the water. I was trying not to pull it left and just slid into it a little bit and ended up making six when I should have made four. But other than that it was very good and I felt very comfortable out there. I hit a lot of fairways and some good iron shots and made some nice putts. It was great to birdie two of the last three.
“I thought the course played really well. The greens were great, considering it was the afternoon. If you started it on line the ball rolled very nicely. They’re not spiky at all. The whole golf course is excellent. Considering how many tournaments are played here, they do a brilliant job getting it in shape every time.”

Alejandro Cañizares

“It was a lot of fun. I played really well. I wasn’t so good off the tee today, but I putted really well. I made some great up-and-downs when I missed a shot, and I’m very happy overall. I can’t wait for the weekend, it’ll be a lot of fun. It was tough to keep your concentration today because of the weather, but luckily some clouds came over and it wasn’t as hot as it is when the sun is on you. The course is playing nicely and the greens are rolling very well. It’s a great track and a very nice tournament.”

Bernd Wiesbeger

“I finished really well. I holed a long curling putt on the sixth, which was my 15th, and I hit it really close on the last two. I felt comfortable out there and it was much better today. I wasn’t at my best yesterday. Mentally I was a bit tired and not in the zone like I’ve been the past few weeks. But today felt good again. I’m trying not to think too much about it; just let it happen. Sometimes you get in a groove and play well and things happen for you, and I just hope it lasts a long time.”

Peter Lawrie
“It’s been a long time coming. I’ve been in the doldrums for the past 20-odd months. It’s been difficult. I’ve struggled with a lot of swing changes and confidence, but my confidence is coming back and I can see the ball going in the hole, so it bodes well for the rest of the year. I’m delighted to be here and very lucky to have received a sponsor’s invite, so I thank Maybank for that. To shoot 66 today was wonderful.”

TIGER WOODS RETIRES AFTER ONLY 11 HOLES

 AT TORREY PINES

SAN DIEGO -- Tiger Woods walked off the course after 11 holes Thursday at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines because of tightness in his lower back that he attributed to a fog delay  (CBS Sports.com reports).
It was his third consecutive US PGA Tour event that he missed the cut or withdrew, and the sixth time since 2010 that he withdrew because of injury.
"I was ready to go," Woods said. "I had a good warm-up session the first time around. Then we stood out here and I got cold, and everything started deactivating again. And it's frustrating that I just can't stay activated. That's just kind of the way it is."
The scene is becoming familiar. Billy Horschel noticed some discomfort with Woods early in the round. Before long, Woods was reaching for his lower back, and the grimace became more pronounced.

On their 10th hole -- the par-5 first on the North Course at Torrey Pines -- Horschel picked up the tee for Woods and took the ball out of the cup for him when Woods made birdie.
Woods hit a safe shot to the middle of the green on the par-3 third hole. When it was his turn to play, he had caddie Joe LaCava pick up his ball marker. Woods waited for Horschel and Rickie Fowler to finish before shaking their hands, getting into a cart and driving to his car.
"It's tough to see a guy I look up to, a guy I consider a friend, to have issues with spasms," Horschel said. "It's tough to see him go, but he was in quite a bit of pain."
Nicholas Thompson had an 8-under 64 on the North Course and had a one-shot lead over Michael Thompson when play was suspended by darkness. Brooks Koepka, coming off his victory last week in the Phoenix Open, had a 66 on the North. The best score on the tougher South Course belonged to Jhonnatan Vegas, who shot 67.
Dustin Johnson, playing for the first time since his six-month leave for "personal challenges," holed out for eagle on No. 4 on the South Course as his lone highlight. He had five bogeys and was 2 over with one hole remaining.
But this day was all about Woods, which used to be typical at Torrey Pines because he has won the tournament seven times. Thursday was different.
Woods was 2-over par through 11 holes and in a tie for 130th when he withdrew.
He will fall to his worst world ranking since before he won his first US PGA Tour event as a 20-year-old in 1996, and he most likely will not qualify for a World Golf Championship for only the second time in his career.

Woods is not expected to play again until the Honda Classic in three weeks. Doral is the following week. He did not indicate earlier in the week that he would add tournaments to his schedule ahead of the Masters, which is April 9-12.
The front nine at Torrey Pines was more of the same kind of golf he showed in the Phoenix Open last week, when he missed the cut by 12 shots with a short game that was shocking. On his first hole, the par-4 10th, Woods short-sided himself right of the green and he bladed his chip some 35 feet beyond the hole for a bogey.
He was in trouble again on the next hole, facing the same chip, and this time struck it perfectly. He chipped in to save par.
From there, it was a mixed bag of poor tee shots (he hit only one fairway) and poor iron shots. His tee shot on the par-3 12th wound up on a front tee box at the 13th hole. He missed the green long and right from the 13th fairway.
Woods made a 6-foot birdie on the 16th and he made birdie on the par-5 first hole. The last hole he completed was the most telling.
Horschel and Woods were in the right rough, about 70 yards short of the green. Horschel hit to about 12 feet on the collar of the green behind the hole. Woods went about a yard from a tee box on the next hole, the shot sailing over the heads of the gallery and down a slope. From there, he duffed his flop shot halfway up the hill, hit the next one too hard about 15 feet past the cup and two-putted for double bogey.
Ian Poulter had a 67 to be tied fifth. Martin Laird is T11 with a 68.

Luke Donald had a 69 to be T18. Russell Knox is back in T67 position with a 72.
