NEDBANK CHALLENGE IN SUN CITY

ROSS  FISHER TAKES ROUTE 66 TO

LEAD BY TWO IN SOUTH AFRICA

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Ross Fisher started the 2015 Race To Dubai in style with a six under par 66 to lead after the opening round of the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa today.
The 34 year old Englishman, who had the last of his five European Tour wins at the Tshwane Open in South Africa during March, holds a two-shot advantage over George Coetzee, Marcel Siem and Alexander Levy at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City.
Siem, playing in a group with Fisher and Coetzee, produced perhaps the most remarkable shot of the day. With an eight iron, his 183 yard approach to the par four 17th deflected off the right edge of the green and spun into the hole for an eagle that won the German a Volvo V40 T5.
Siem, who explained he will give the car to his mum, said: “It’s not the best golf shot at all for me in my career, but I tried to draw it in and stayed straight and hit the fringe, and  I had a firm bounce to the left and, it was really cool to hole that one.”
Fisher dropped just one shot in his round, at the par three 16th, and made all of his gains in birdies.
Having picked up shots at all four par fives on the course, he said: “I think the par fives are all scoreable. They are all reachable, but you've still got to hit two shots.
“So par fives are quite key, but again, there's a lot more scoreable holes out there. here's quite a lot of short par fours where if you get your driver in good position, you've got short irons into the greens, and the greens are putting well.
“So as long as you can read the putts well, there's definitely some scoreable holes out there.”
Fisher was level on five under with Coetzee after both carded birdie fours at the tenth, but moved ahead at the par five 14th when the South African did well to recover from a wayward approach for a par. Fisher doubled his advantage at the next, a par four, only to then slip up on 16. However, Coetzee dropped his sole shot at the last to sit alongside Siem and Levy.
Coetzee enjoyed playing alongside Fisher, saying: “I'm sure we fed off each other. I'm sure he's grateful for me, too.”
Fisher, who played at this tournament in 2009 and 2010, added: “I felt like I drove it really good. I didn't miss many fairways.
“Everyone's got their own way of playing this golf course. You can't really be too overly aggressive, but my style of golf, I like to hit driver a lot because I feel like I hit it quite long and I do generally hit it pretty straight.”
Europe Ryder Cup player Stephen Gallacher, European Tour 2014 Rookie of the Year Brooks Koepka and Miguel Angel Jiménez, the first player to tee off on the second longest course in European Tour history, are in a group of six, joint fifth on two-under 70.
Jiménez, aged 50, said: “I'm the oldest guy in the field, probably the guy who played more years. Now I start my 27th season today on the first tee. It's nice to make the first shot of the season.”
Defending champion Thomas Bjørn had a poor first round, sitting last in the field of 30 on eight over.

AUSSIE RICHARDSON SETS PACE AT JAKARTA

PADRAIG HARRINGTON ONLY ONE

 OFF THE LEAD IN INDONESIA

ASIAN TOUR NEWS RELEASE
Jakarta: Kalem Richardson of Australia fired a superb eight-under-par 63 to lead by one shot over Padraig Harrington of Ireland after the first round of the BANK BRI Indonesia Open at Jakarta today.
Richardson, who has two top-five results in his last three events, rolled in eight birdies, including a 20-footer on the last hole to steal the limelight from Harrington, who is making his debut at the US$750,000 Asian Tour event.
The three-time Major champion produced his best score in 2014 with a 64 after birdieing his first two holes from close range at the Damai Indah Golf – PIK Course.
Australia’s Adam Groom battled through a leg infection to return with a 67 to tie for third place alongside India’s Arjun Atwal, Thanyakon Khrongpha of Thailand and Bryce Easton of South Africa.
Starting from the 10th tee, Richardson stayed sharp on his first nine holes, as he did not play the stretch during the practice round, and was rewarded with four straight birdies before turning in 31.
“I guess when you haven’t played the back nine, you concentrate more because you don’t know where you are going. You really need to rely on the yardage book and good advice from your caddy,” said the 26-year-old Richardson.
He is playing without any pressure this week after securing his full Asian Tour card for the 2015 season after finishing tied fourth in Thailand last week.
“I secured my Asian Tour card last week so I’m going to try and enjoy the week and see what happens. I got no pressure on me now so I’ll just try and finish as high as I can on the Order of Merit. Obviously I want to try to get a win before the season ends,” said the Australian, who is ranked 47th on the Merit list.
Harrington took advantage of his early morning start and birdied his opening two holes before going on to add six more birdies which included a 15-footer birdie on the par three seventh hole.
“I could have picked a few spots to make more birdies. I made a nice 15-footer on the seventh hole and it is always nice to hole a nice putt when you are already six-under for the day,” said the Irishman.
“Overall I’m happy with the round. Obviously it is still a long way to go. It was very nice early on and the greens are a little bit softer. When the wind came up after nine holes, it wasn’t really a problem for me because I had a few birdies in the bank at that stage,” smiled Harrington.

BANCHORY MAN FINISHES BOGEY-BOGEY-TRIPLE BOGEY

BYRNE SURVIVES CUT DESPITE

MAKING LIFE DIFFICULT FOR HIMSELF
Kuala Lumpur: Banchory's James Byrne survived the halfway cut despite dropping five shots to par over the last three holes in the second round of the Asian Development Tour's season-ending PGM MIDF KLGCC Championship at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club's East Course
Byrne, needing to improve on a first-round 76 was four under par on the day after only seven holes, following an eagle 3 at the long sixth and birdies at the first and short seventh. He dropped a shot at the ninth to be out in 32 but then birdied the 10th, 12th and 13th to be six under par for the round.
Then it all went pear-shaped for the former Northern Open champion. He bogeyed the long 16th and short 17th before running up a triple bogey 7 at the 18th for 38 home.
His two-round tally of four-over-par 146 saw him beat the cut by two shots.
Byrne is nine shots behind the leader, England's Peter Richardson who has scored 66 and 71 for five-under 137.

MERIT TABLE LEADER DUFF WILL BE

HARD TO CATCH OVER SECOND HALF

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Paul Lawrie's five wins in six starts have catapulted him up to second place in the North-east Alliance Order of Merit but it looks like being a case of so far and no further.
The 1999 Open champion returns to the European Tour in early January and with the North-east Alliance having its mid-winter break until Inverallochy on January 7, Paul does not see himself having the time to play again - much as he likes it - on the alliance winter circuit.
That means Order of Merit leader Newmachar amateur John Duff , 270pt ahead of third-placed Joel Hopwood (Royal Aberdeen), looks
like still be in the pole position by the end of the second half of the 2014-2015 NE Alliance season at the end of March
Craibstone's teaching pro Lee Vannet moved up from seventh to fifth, Kevin Duncan (Cruden Bay) from eighth to seventh, and Craig Lawrie (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) from 18th to 13th.
Young Sam Kiloh (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) improved from 20th to 15th
