SHORT LEET OF 10 NAMED TODAY

Rory McIlroy is a strong favourite to found off the most successful spell of his career with the BBC Sports Pertsonality of the Year award after being confirmed earlier today as being among the 10 short-listed contenders.
McIlroy, who won the final two majors of the year as well as helping Europe retain the Ryder Cup, will bid to become the first golfer to win the prestigious award since Nick Faldo in 1989.
But McIlroy could face a stern challenge from Lewis Hamilton, who claimed his second Formula One world title in Abu Dhabi at the weekend and finished second in the voting in both 2007 and 2008.
The winner of the award will be announced at the culmination of the live show on December 14 at the Hydro Arena in Glasgow, following a public vote.
But Scottish fans will have no local favourite to support after last year's winner Andy Murray was left off the final contenders following a year in which he failed to add to his two career grand slam titles.
Gareth Bale is the only footballer to make the cut after an impressive first season with Real Madrid, while boxer Carl Froch also earns a place after his conclusive Wembley rematch win over George Groves.
Olympic and World Cup skeleton champion Lizzy Yarnold is joined by skiers Kelly Gallagher and guide Charlotte Evans, who were crowned Great Britain's first Winter Paralympic champions when they won the women's visually-impaired Super G in Sochi in March.
Charlotte Dujardin, who picked up two dressage world titles this year, and Jo Pavey, whose 10,000m gold in Zurich made her the oldest female European champion in history at the age of 40 and 325 days, take the total list of female contenders to four.
The list is completed by gymnast Max Whitlock, who won world, European and Commonwealth medals in 2014, and swimmer Adam Peaty, who won four European titles and two Commonwealth Games golds.
The shortlist was decided by a panel of former nominees, newspaper sports editors and television sport executives.

LANDMARK YEAR IN GOLF CLUB'S HISTORY

ROYAL DORNOCH PLANNING

YEAR-LONG CELEBRATION IN 2016

NEWS RELEASE
Royal Dornoch Golf Club, the renowned Championship club in the Scottish Highlands, is working closely with the local community to create a year of celebration in 2016.

Co-ordinated by Royal Dornoch Golf Club, “400 years of golf at Dornoch” is a club and community year-long celebration of golf.  The 400 years celebration will allow golfers, the community and its visitors to enjoy many events, activities and celebrations in the town.

The club has been looking at the role golf and sport has played within Dornoch and the wider area.
The funding of a post graduate research position, filled by Wade Cormack in 2013, was one of the first steps taken to learn more about how golf has shaped the modern community.

“The first year of my research into golf in and around the Moray Firth has already provided some interesting finds.” comments Wade McCormack, PhD student at UHI.
“From the earliest records it is clear that golf was a sport enjoyed by all and it very quickly provided many people in the region with a business opportunity, as well as a new pastime.”

Visitors, locals and golfers will be able to enjoy talks on new discoveries about golf in the area; attend music, drama, art exhibitions at Royal Dornoch Golf Club and throughout the town of Dornoch.

“It is an exciting time for the club and we’re so delighted to be met with such enthusiasm from every quarter of the town, with the school children involved in designing our Royal Dornoch Golf Club tartan and many of the town clubs and groups contributing to the 400 year celebration,” said Neil Hampton, General Manager at Royal Dornoch Golf Club.
“The town has really embraced the 400 years and the list of events keeps on growing.”

The 400 years of Golf tees off on the 2nd of January 2016 with the Captain of Royal Dornoch “driving in,” using a special hand crafted hickory club and feathery ball.

Our summer programme brings town and club together with an exhibition match featuring world renowned professional golfers followed by a celebratory gala dinner.

The year will be rounded off with visits from the Royal Clubs around the world in September and the Club Captain sinking the final putt on the 18th green to bring the celebrations to a conclusion at the Captain’s weekend in October.

£550 PRIZE WITH A 1O-UNDER-PAR 59

Heather MacRae (Gleneagles) and boyfriend Chris Kelly (unattached), the only mixed gender partnership in the field, dovetailed splendidly to shoot a better-ball, 10-under-par 59 to win today's £1,500 PGA in Scotland winter four-ball foursomes competition over the winter course at Montrose Links.
Heather, winner of the Paul Lawrie Ladies Tartan Tour championship at Dalmahoy last year and a GB and I amateur international in the 2005 Vagliano Trophy, the year she won the British women's amateur stroke-play title at Nairn, provided the highlight of their round.

Paul Lawrie (Carnegie Club) and Scott Henderson (Kings Links) earned around £185 for a third-place tie on 61 with two other pairs, Christopher Currie (Caldwell) and Gary McFarlane (Clober), and Tain's Stuart Morrison and Alan Reid (West Lothian).

CALLAWAY INVITATIONAL, CALIFORNIA

TOMMY ARMOUR III WINS PEBBLE

BEACH PLAY-OFF AGAINST JANZEN

FROM CBS SPORTS.COM
PEBBLE BEACH, California -- Tommy Armour III made a 4ft birdie putt on the first play-off hole against Lee Janzen to wom the Callaway Pebble Beach Invitational in California.
Armour, who won the event for the third time in its 43-year history, had a final-round 67 for a 14-under 274. He began the day trailing Janzen, the two-time U.S. Open champion, by two shots.
The co-leader after three rounds with Andrew Putnam, Janzen finished with a 69.
After hitting his tee shot on the 18th hole of regulation onto the beach, Armour recovered with a 17-foot birdie putt to match Janzen at 14 under.
Janzen had just made a 30ft birdie from the front fringe.
"When I saw the ball on the beach I knew there was no other way," said Armour, the 2007 and 2008 winner who used a 7-iron to get back on the fairway.
"I've had that shot before but I've never made it."
Armour, who won the event in 2007 and 2008 when he was on the PGA Tour, joined Mark Brooks as the tournament's only three-time winners.
Janzen, who joined the Champions Tour in August, held a two-shot lead at 15 under after 12 holes. But Janzen, whose last PGA Tour win was the 1998 U.S. Open, then bogeyed twice, while Armour made five straight pars through the 17th.
"I chunked a wedge on 13 and made bogey and that was the start of it," said Janzen. "I hit some bad shots and some good shoots and there were some good things to build on."
Janzen and Armour both hit their play-off hole tee shots on the 18th behind trees. Both players hit low second shots with Janzen's effort hitting Armour's ball in the fairway.
Armour hit his third shot past the hole and it rolled back. Janzen missed an estimated 15ft birdie putt before Armour's winning putt.
Kevin Sutherland, the 2000 winner of the tournament that featured 83 pros from the four major tours as well as mini tour players and club pros, finished alone in third at 10 under after a 67.
Bryce Moulder, who shot 64, the final round's low score, finished with Tommy Gainey (71), Thomas Pieters (71) and Putnam (74) at 9-under.
Mina Harigae, the LPGA veteran who was the only woman to make the cut, finished with a 76 and at 4 over 292.
