A silver-gilt replica of the Ryder Cup, gifted to Banchory-based golfer Harry Bannerman, was sold for £11,250 at auction in Edinburgh on Wednesday.
It was bought by a Scottish collector, bidding on-line at Bonham's Sporting Sale.]The trophy attracted bids from golf fans on both sides of the Atlantic and exceeded expectations that it would raise betweenm£5,000 and £8,000.
Mr Bannerman, 72, decided to auction the trophy, presented to him followinmg his participation in the Ryder Cup match at Old Warson Country Club, St Louis, Missouri from September 16-18, 1971.
Speaking of the difficult decision before the sale, Harry said: "To be honest, the real reason that this trophy is going under the hammer is that I don't know what else to do with it.
"I can't exactly cut it in three and divide it among my children. I thought the best way was to get the money for it and share it out instead.
"I know some will presume I am doing this because I am skint but that couldn't be further from the truth. "
Bannerman was one of three Scots in the 19th Ryder Cup match 43 years ago. The others were Bernard Gallacher and Brian Barnes. Another Scot, Eric Brown, captained what was then a Great Britain and Ireland team.
On the last day, two sets of singles were played. Bannerman halved with Arnold Palmer, then at the height of his game, and beat Gardner Dickinson.
Bannerman and Gallacher also beat Billy Casper and Miller Barber in the afternoon foursomes on the opening day but skipper Brown did not pair them again..
The United States won 16-11 with five games halved. 
He was 29 and his career was cut short a couple of years later by a recurring back injury.
Bannerman did not turn professional until late in 1965 when he was 23. A short-game wizard, he
 had had a successful amateur career playing out of Murcar Golf Club but was not a full-time amateur - he worked full time at Aberdeen's Rowett Institute.
He became an assistant pro at Royal Aberdeen, then tournament pro at Banchory, then Murcar, and later was Cruden Bay club pro until he finished his career in Germany at Schloss Mainsondheim.
Bannerman won the Scottish professional championship in 1967 at Montrose and by 10 strokes at Strathaven in 1972.
He was Northern Open champion in 1967, 1969 and 1972.
Harry earned his Ryder Cup spurs with an outstanding season on the European Tour in 1971.
He had six top-10 finishes and finished 11th behind winner Lee Trevino in the Open at Royal Birkdale.
At the cut-off point for Ryder Cup selection, Bannerman was fourth in the PGA Order of Merit with earnings of £5,000 (a lot of money in 1971) and an automatic choice. 
Henry Baggott of Bonham's said: "The sale was a great success. This was the highest sale of a golf item this year in Britain."

The most photographed driveway in all of golf has increased its security.
Magnolia Lane, the entrance into Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia - home of the Masters tournament - is now blocked by short concrete posts that were installed this summer, according to the local newspaper, the "Augusta Chronicle."
Photos from the drive down Magnolia Lane are often posted on social media by Tour pros as they enter the gates each April, and the entrance has become an attraction for tourists since the adjacent street, Washington Road, is a public road. 
According to the report, a large green screen was put up while the construction was completed. The posts are retractable and controlled by club security.
Augusta National's security concerns are not unfounded. 
In 1983, when President Reagan was playing the course, a local man crashed through the gates and held hostages at gunpoint in the pro shop for two hours while demanding to see the president. 
The Secret Service later subdued him.

American Ryder Cup star - Ed: Were there any? - Patrick Reed, pictured above, is set to be punished by the US PGA Tour after a foul-mouthed outburst on the opening day of the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai.

While playing partner Graeme McDowell claimed a two-shot lead with a five-under-par 67 at Sheshan International - despite dropping two shots in the last six holes - Reed was turning the air blue.

Reed was just four off the pace after a round of 71, but the American faces a hefty fine after being caught on camera not only swearing at himself, but also using language which could be interpreted as being homophobic, a gay slur.
Playing his 10^th hole of the day, Reed three-putted for bogey and on-course microphones picked up the offensive language that he muttered to himself. The American shot a one-under 71
Television commentators swiftly apologised after Reed was clearly heard mouthing profanities after a bogey on the first hole, his 10th of the day. 
A US PGA Tour spokesperson later said: "The PGA Tour's Conduct Unbecoming regulations prohibit the use of obscene language on the golf course. The PGA Tour will deal with this matter internally in accordance with its regulations."
The US PGA Tour has a policy of not disclosing any disciplinary sanctions it issues.
Reed later posted an apology from his Twitter account: "I'm sorry for using offensive language today in China. My passion to play well got the best of me and my word choice was unacceptable."

Mark Tullo signed his second round off in style after a holed bunker shot for eagle at the par five last earned him a share of the lead alongside Edouard Espana on day two of the Dubai Festival City Challenge Tour Grand Final hosted by Al Badia Golf Club.
The leading pair are six under par for the tournament and a shot clear of two-time winner this season Benjamin Hebert of France, with Welshman Oliver Farr a stroke further adrift, while Jordi Garcia Pinto of Spain and England’s Andrew Marshall rounded out the top five, some three strokes off the lead.
It was an up and down day for the first-round leader Tullo. He got off to the ideal start, thanks to a birdie at the first, but four from the edge of the green saw him card a double bogey at the beastly par three third and he fell back into the chasing pack.
The Chilean will be pleased with how he bounced back though, after a second consecutive eagle of the week at the par five eighth was duly followed by a dramatic three at the closing hole to ensure he retained at least a share of the lead heading into the final two rounds, as he chases the prestigious title of Challenge Tour Number One.
“It was probably the best finish I’ve had in a while,” said the VACON Open winner from August, who carded a two under par 70 today. Thursday.
 “It was a strange day, I played well, but the greens got the best of me.
“I actually hit good shots and then poor putts, but that finish definitely makes the day a lot better. I was one over coming into the last couple and finished two under so that’s a great finish.
“It’s all up for grabs out there, as Edouard shot four under and there was a six under too, so it’s doable. In my case I just have to make fewer mistakes on the greens, as I’m up there for birdie quite often, so the idea tomorrow is to play better on the greens.
“It would be pretty cool to finish number one but I have no clue how it could happen. So many things would have to occur, but I’m really determined to have the best tournament I possibly can, and if that means I win, then great. If somebody beats me though, at least I tried the best I can.
“If I can find the groove and the touch on the green I could shoot a very low number out here. Yesterday I shot four under and left so many out there, and today I had a great finish but I need to crunch down and understand these greens, because I’m playing great.
“I’m hitting the driver well and taking care of the par fives, but the mistakes have been on the greens as I’ve been three-putting a lot for bogey, so I’ve got to get a hang of the long putts and we’ll see what happens tomorrow.”
Espana arrived in Dubai looking to put the finishing touches on an exemplary first year on the second tier, having posted six top ten finishes in 2014 which included a career-best tie for third at the EMC Golf Challenge Open last month.
His day did not get off to the ideal start with a dropped shot at the third, but three birdies to finish the front nine countered that, a feat he repeated on the back nine as another trio of gains made up for a solitary bogey on the 14th hole and saw him sign for a 68.
The Frenchman is still not assured of his place on The European Tour though, heading into the week at 11th on the Rankings, so he will hope for more of the same in the third round alongside his good friend and compatriot Hebert.
“I played well today, and the secret was definitely my putting,” said the 25 year old. “I made six birdies and just two bogeys, and my game was solid, so I was very happy to shoot 68. It was a good day.
“It looks like I will be playing with my friend tomorrow, which will be good as we have the same coach and do a lot of things together, so it will be great to play with him. I just hope we can shoot the same score tomorrow.
“I just want to keep the same attitude and focus on my game plan. I need to play with passion, hit good shots, and stay calm and that should do it.
“For the moment I am playing well, and have been for a couple of months going back to Kazakhstan. My game is solid, my putting is good and my head is very nice as I am focused on my game, and it is very good to play two good rounds to start this tournament. I’m not certain to be in the top 15 on the Rankings so I need two good rounds to finish off this week.
“I have been staying focused though, and not worry about the Rankings. I am happy on the course with my caddie James, and we are enjoying the walk out there so far this week, so I will focus on doing the same thing in the next two rounds.”
Jens Fahrbring had one of the more steady rounds of the day after a run of 17 pars was broken by a closing birdie to move him into a share of seventh at two under par. The Swede is alongside the experienced Robert Coles, who fired a 69 in round two, and Jake Roos, who still cannot be certain of his graduation despite two Challenge Tour titles in 2014.
Jerome Lando Casanova shot the round of the day, a course record 66, to move back to level par and retain some hope of a career-changing victory.

Delhi: Home favourite Rahil Gangjee fired a brilliant six-under-par 66 to seize a two-shot lead after the opening round of the Panasonic Open India today.

Treating his round like a game of chess, the amiable Indian birdied the last two holes in near benign morning conditions at the Delhi Golf Club to put himself in position to end a 10-year title drought on the Asian Tour.

Title holder Wade Ormsby of Australia birdied the last hole from close range after missing an eagle chance to tie for second place on 68 with Singapore’s Choo Tze Huang, Bangladeshi Zamal Hossain and Rashid Khan of India, who won at the Delhi course in March.

Thailand’s Jazz Janewattananond and Australia’s Unho Park were amongst seven players tied in sixth place on identical 69s, three shots off the pace in the event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI).

McDOWELL OFF TO A FLYER IN

Graeme McDowell again showed his affinity for the World Golf Championships by opening with a five under par 67 at the WGC-HSBC Champions today.
The Northern Irishman has finished in the top ten on six of his last seven WGC appearances, stretching back to the beginning of the 2013 season, and at Sheshan International Golf Club, where he was third 12 months ago, he leads by two shots from a group of six players.
US Open champion Martin Kaymer is among that group, as are young Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, Americans Rickie Fowler, Chris Kirk and Brandt Snedeker and South African Tim Clark.
McDowell at one stage reached seven under par after starting on the tenth, but he dropped two shots in the last six holes on a course that is reportedly set up much tougher this year.
The WGC-HSBC Champions is the second event in The Race to Dubai’s Final Series, a lucrative four-tournament swing to conclude the 2014 season. This week is followed by the Turkish Airlines Open by the Ministry of Youth and Sport and the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.

“A big key to this golf course is driving the ball well and I drove it very well today. I think I missed only one fairway, which is very important; it set up a few opportunities. I putted really well and didn’t really give any shots away, which was pleasing. It was a really good first round. I hit a lot of good putts and holed plenty. Last week I had a nightmare first round but was nine under for the rest of the week, which was as good as a lot of the leaders.
" It was one horrific day which happens once or twice a year. This is a great tournament and I’m playing alongside the world’s best players. It’s very motivating.” 
American Jason Dufner shot an even-par 72 in the opening round but it was really a shot better. On the 18th hole, Dufner mistakenly picked up his ball in the fairway and received a one-shot penalty.
Dufner played in the CIMB Classic in Malaysia last week, a tournament in which players were allowed to lift, clean, and place due to wet conditions.

Former Scottish amateur champion Grant Forrest from North Berwick, a final-year student at San Diego University, California, shot one eagle and 23 birdies over 54 holes in finishing joint second in a United States college golf tournament on Hawaii (November 3 to 5).

Forrest had rounds of 65, 66 and 68 for a 17-under-par total of 199 over a par-72 course at 7,223yd at Makai Golf Club, Princeville.

Forrest had an eagle and six birdies in his first round, nine birdies on the second day and eight birdies in his final round.

A triple bogey 6 at the short seventh in his third round was a very costly one. Had the Scot parred the hole he would have tied with the winner of the Warrior Princeville-Makai Invitational, Frederick Wedel (Pepperdine University) who had scores of 64, 63 and 69 for 20-under 196.

Forrest tied for second place with the world's top ranked amateur, Ollie Schneiderjans (Georgia Tech) who scored 66, 65 and 68 for 199.

Robert MacIntyre, pictured right, last year's Scottish U18 boys stroke play champion from Oban and now a freshman student at McNeese State University, Lake Charles in Louisiana, finished joint 17th in the quality field of 84 players, 41 of whom finished under par after three rounds.

Walker Cup player Rhys Pugh (East Tennessee State) tied for 24th place on 212 with scores of 72, 68 and 72.

England international Seb Crookall-Nixon (San Francisco) from the North of England,  finished joint 39th on 215 (74-72-69).
Georgia Tech (809) won the team title ahead of Arizona State (824) and Louisville (826). San Diego (841) finished sixth of the field of 15 teams.

JOSH JAMIESON JUST OUTSIDE TOP 20 

AT CORDE VALLEY, CALIFORNIA

Josh Jamieson from  St Andrews, the 2011 Scottish U18 boys' stroke-play champion and now a third-year student at Northwestern University (Luke Donald's alma mater), finished joint 21st in a field of 72 at the Gifford Collegiate at Corde Valley Golf Club, San Martin, California (Nov 3 to 5).
Jamieson had steady scores of 71, 72 and 73 for a three-over par total of 216 over a long and testing par-71 course of 7,360yd.
David Boote from Epsom, a third-year student at Stanford University (Tiger Woods' alma mater), finished joint eighth on 210 with scores of 68, 73 and 69 for 210 - six shots behind the winner,
a team-mate of Jamieson's at Northwestern, Dylan Wu who scored 69, 68 and 67 for nine-under 204.
UCLA (1050) won the team title ahead of Southern California (1053) with Stanford (1066) third. Northwestern (1081) finished fifth of the 10 teams competing.
