NORTH-EAST ALLIANCE TEE TIMES

FRASERBURGH, Wednesday, November 12

Players will play in fours wherever possible.
The tee times have been advanced and the last tee time will be
11.26am.
Hopefully, this will help to solve the problem of slow play by
competitors in the middle of the starting order making it impossible
for later-starting members to finish in good light.
Today, the first hour of four-balls got round in around four hours.
By the end of the day, rounds were taking more than FIVE hours!
Most of the "No Returns" at Cruden Bay today were by competitors at the end of the field. They simply could not see where their golf balls landed because of near-darkness from 4.30pm.

CHALLENGE TOUR GRAND FINAL REPORT, SCORES

MARK TULLO ON TOP IN DUBAI

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Mark Tullo carded a scorching four under par 68 to move into the first round lead at the Dubai Festival City Challenge Tour Grand Final hosted by Al Badia Golf Club on a day in which there were plenty of big moves in the chase for the 15 European Tour cards on offer.
The in-form Chilean fired six birdies and an eagle to move one shot clear at the summit, continuing an astounding run of form that has yielded five top tens in his last six events, including back-to-back ties for third in the two events prior to the season finale in Dubai.
The 36 year old started the week in sixth place in the Rankings, but the title of Challenge Tour Number One is still within reach if he were to emerge victorious at the breath-taking Al Badia, although he would also be reliant on other results.
Tullo was delighted with his round, which established a new course record after the course was subject to big changes since last year’s inaugural edition, and is feeling more confident with his game than ever before.
“It was a good day out there,” said the VACON Open winner. “I had a couple of mistakes out on the greens but you make some and you miss some, so it was a solid round. I hit it good off the tee and hit my irons pretty close.
“It wasn’t the easiest of days, the wind was blowing a little bit and there were some tricky shots, but I played really solid.
“You tend to relax when you’ve secured your card but I’m a very competitive kind of guy and I try to do the best that I can every tournament, wherever I am in the Rankings.
“Obviously it does help that guys in my situation are more relaxed and we can go at every pin. It does make a difference to being outside the cut line.
“Once I reached that number which secured my European Tour card, I just wanted to keep on going and I could have been up there challenging for the title the last three weeks, so I’m right there. I’m just trying to play the best golf I can.
“I have had great momentum for the last two months and it’s just pedal to the metal for me. It’s been a long stretch, but a positive one, so all the sacrifices are worth it.
“A win would be a great way to finish the season but if it happens it happens, if it doesn’t, I’m very happy with what I’ve done this year. But like I said, I’m very competitive and I will be trying my best this week.”
Max Orrin, who launched himself into this week’s 44-man field courtesy of a maiden professional title at the National Bank of Oman Golf Classic last week, was one of three players a shot off the pace at three under par.
The Englishman was thrilled to bring the momentum of his impressive victory in Muscat into the season finale with an opening 69, and admitted it was difficult to stay focussed on the job at hand after such a breakthrough moment in his career.
“I’ve obviously got no experience of getting a win and then playing the next week but it’s been fun and difficult at the same time,” said the 20 year old former Walker Cup player.
“It’s nice that it was so widely recognised but it can be difficult to get used to all the attention and the cameras. I started off today with a birdie, which really calmed me down.
“I took my chances after that and carried on from last week, holing a few putts. It’s just a course that you need to be patient on. The front nine is very difficult and I managed to keep on level par and then holed a few putts coming in.
“It’s still another week, and another tournament I’m trying to do well in, or, if I have a chance, try and win. Another win would be great but ultimately the most important thing is that even if I come 15th, I get in the top 15 in the Rankings.
" I don’t know what will get me in there, but I just have to keep playing, and hopefully it’s enough at the end of the week.”
Dane Lasse Jensen, who was 19th in the Rankings going into this week, has given his chances of graduation to The European Tour a big boost as he carded a three under 69 to join Orrin and Welshman Oliver Farr, who is hoping to consolidate his place inside the crucial top 15 this week, in a share of second place.

NE ALLIANCE REPORT AND SCORES FROM CRUDEN BAY

 HUTCH AND HOPWOOD JOINT WINNERS

OF RON MENZIES MEMORIAL TROPHY

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
A double bogey 7 at the 14th was the final nail in the coffin of Paul Lawrie's bid to win three North-east Alliances in a row at Cruden Bay today
Paul's three-over-par 72 (36-36) relegated him to 11th place in a field of 98.

Joint winners on three-under 66 were Tartan Tour supremo Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) and Royal Aberdeen staff professional Joel Hopwood. They each earned £135 and will share the Ron Menzies Memorial Scratch Trophy.
Hutcheon, pictured right, who had taken a complete rest from golf since the Tomatin Tartan Tour event ended on October 2, did very well to shoot as low as he did, given that he lost two balls, one at the first and another at the 18th.
In halves of 33 (two under) and 33 (one under), Hutch had and eagle 3 at the sixth and eight birdies (the third, fifth, eighth, 10th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 16th).
He had a double bogey 6 at the first and bogeys at the ninth, 11th, 15th, 17th and 18th.

Greig is now limbering up for the PGA play-offs at Antalya, Turkey at the end of the month. He won the 2013 tournament.
Hopwood, pictured left, paid credit to fellow pro Lee Vannet for "sorting out my swing which was flat and horrible."
Joel said: "Lee's got me swinging much more upright now and my bad shots now don't go so far left or right .... plus the fact that I did hole a few putts today on these excellent Cruden Bay putting surfaces."

Hopwood's 66 had halves of 34-32 that contained birdies at the third, eighth, 10th, 14th and 17th. He bogeyed only the fifth and 13th.
Leading amateur was third-placed Nick Macandrew of Royal Aberdeen. Playing in the fast-fading light at the end of the field, Nick shot a two-under 67 (34-33) which included a double-bogey 6 at the 15th.
Macandrew's birdie-birdie at the 17th and 18th was probably the best finish of the day, given the semi-darkness with which he had to cope.
The best outward half of the day was three-under 32, achieved by young pro Craig Lawrie and by an amateur, former Scottish PGA secretary Michael MacDougall, who now manages the Paul Lawrie Foundation.

Craig came home in 38 with a triple bogey 7 at the 15th for a 70.
Michael took 45 blows for the inward half and a 77.
Welcome back today to former Newburgh professional Ian Bratton who is now working in the oil industry - and "repairing trolleys" in his spare time, he says. Ian had a 76 in his first Alliance round for more than a year.
Royal Aberdeen two-handicapper Jim Emslie won the Class 1 Ron Menzies Memorial Trophy with a net 67 and Mike Winton (Caledonian), who plays off 12, won the Class 2 trophy, also with a net 67.
It is four years since the former NE Alliance secretary died suddenly on his return from running a tournament at Marrakech, Morocco.

FORMER BASEBALL HOME-RUN HITTER

FLAGG WINS WORLD LONG-DRIVE

COMPETITION WITH HIT OF 365yd

FROM ESPN.COM
LAS VEGAS -- When Jeff Flagg's minor league baseball career ended, he needed something to stay competitive.
Known for his strength and his ability to drive home runs out of Traverse City's Wuerfel Park when he played for the Traverse City (Michigan) Beach Bums of the Frontier League, Flagg turned to golf. He has spent the past 2 1/2 years honing his power in long-drive competitions.
His efforts culminated Tuesday night when the 29-year-old Flagg edged Jeff Crittenden to win the World Long Drive Championship at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort.
"It's been awesome. I'm speechless," Flagg said. "I'm sitting here smiling, taking pictures, doing interviews, but I have no clue what's going on."
Flagg and Crittenden, 43, hit their second ball of the final round 365 yards off the platform. Flagg's shot measured 20 inches past the hash mark, and Crittenden's was 7 inches from the 365-yard mark.
"I never played golf really serious; baseball was always No. 1," said Flagg, who earned $250,000 for the win. "I was always athletic enough to play when I was young and got the chance. I just don't think the mindset changes. When baseball got done, it was one of those things where I had to find something to keep my competitive juices going.
"It's been a heck of a run the last two and a half years."
Flagg said he had no plans to make it as far as he did because Crittenden had eliminated him earlier this year in a regional qualifier in Alabama. But at the urging of his girlfriend and former college baseball teammate Connor Powers, he gave it one more shot at another qualifier, this time in Chicago.
"I was kind of dejected, ready to hang it up," Flagg said. "I'm one of those guys that just gives it one shot, see what happens. I'm not going to chase it around, I mean, it's kind of expensive. (But) I kept it going and haven't lost since. It's unbelievable how this year played out."
The finalists advanced from a field of eight. The night began with fair weather conditions but ended with a brisk wind blowing across the grid.
Flagg and Crittenden were followed by semi-finalists Joe Miller and Adam Smith. Daniel Beckman, Powers, Jamie Sadlowski and Matt Hanger didn't make it to the final round.

SEARCH FOR A SUCCESSOR AT AN EARLY STAGE

GEORGE O'GRADY TO STAND DOWN AS

EUROPEAN TOUR CHIEF EXECUTIVE

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
George O’Grady, Chief Executive of the PGA European Tour, has today confirmed that he has asked The Board of Directors to begin the process to appoint his successor.
The Nominations Committee, chaired by David Jones, has been tasked with recruiting the new Chief Executive as the Board looks to implement its growth strategy and build on the firm traditions and relationships of The European Tour.
The search is at an early stage. An announcement about this process had originally been planned for the week of The DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, the season ending finale of The 2014 Race to Dubai, but recent media speculation has hastened that process, although no further comment will be made by The European Tour or its Board of Directors until during that event.
O’Grady – who will remain in his position until his successor takes office – became only the third Chief Executive in The European Tour’s history on January 1, 2005, succeeding John Jacobs, who supervised the Tour’s formative years from 1971 to 1974 and Ken Schofield, who took over the reins on January 1, 1975.
He has been with The European Tour for over 40 years and during this time he has been instrumental in its development. In his role as Chief Executive, he has led a number of key initiatives including the implementation of The Race To Dubai and The Final Series, overseeing the significant growth of The Ryder Cup, securing key TV and sponsorship agreements, helping the process which saw golf reinstated in the Olympic Games, and instigating strong relationships with golfing bodies and fellow Tours across the globe.
George O’Grady commented:
“In the aftermath of what I believe to have been the best presented Ryder Cup since my first involvement in the contest at Royal Lytham in 1977, I felt this was the right time to ask the Board to begin the search for my successor.
“It is my firm belief that, coming towards the end of what has been another incredibly successful season, we are now seeing the green shoots of recovery across Europe and I am pleased that this coincides with all our building blocks, in terms of key television and sponsorship contracts, being in place.
“I have agreed with the Board to stay not only for the time it takes to appoint a new CEO but also for sufficient additional time after that to see them properly settled in.
"The Board also agreed that, at that stage, I will take up a role as President of International Relations which will see me represent The European Tour through the Olympic Games in 2016.”
David Williams, Chairman of The European Tour, commented:
“On behalf of the Board and all of the Members of The European Tour I would like to thank George for his contribution to The European Tour and professional golf generally over the last 40 years.
“The European Tour and its players are admired throughout the world of golf and George has played a key part in building global relationships and developing the Tour. He has always respected the traditions of the Tour and built on the strong foundations put in place by John Jacobs, Neil Coles and Ken Schofield.
“The Tour is now embarking on a new phase in its development and that is why George has considered that it is the right time to ask the Nominations Committee to find his successor.”
