NATIONAL BANK OF OMAN CLASSIC REPORT, SCORES

JASON BARNES LEADS WITH A 65

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Jason Barnes carded a stunning seven-under-par 65 to move one shot clear after the opening round of the National Bank of Oman Golf Classic, and the Englishman admitted he has been inspired by his compatriot and friend Jason Palmer’s victory in China last week.
The 30 year old fired ten birdies over the testing Greg Norman-designed lay-out and posted the overnight lead despite a three-putt bogey from 25 feet at the last hole.
On a day when the weather was kind to Barnes and his fellow afternoon starters, following a breezy morning which also yielded some rare rainfall in the Omani capital, he took advantage in clinical fashion.

The Kent player hit 15 greens in regulation and, although he left himself short on a few occasions, he duly chipped in twice to maintain the kind of momentum which produced six birdies on the front nine.

Barnes currently sits in 25th position in the Challenge Tour Rankings so a win this week would secure his European Tour status, but he is trying not to get carried away too early, although he conceded that watching Palmer claim a maiden title at The Foshan Open last week has spurred him on.
“I am over the moon with that score,” he said. “If you’d have offered me seven under at the start of the day I would have ripped your hand off.

" It’s always a bit disappointing when you bogey the last having played it really well - it’s just going to sour the taste a little bit - but all in all I’m really happy.
“I got a little bit lucky out there at times, I chipped in twice, which always helps! It was just solid golf, so same again tomorrow please.
“I’m trying not to be too excited about the prospect of graduating but I’ve been doing the maths in my head and I think I’m going to need around about €30,000, so I’m going aggressive on it. You’re not going to do it by playing safe so keep attacking and a top three finish this week would go a long way.
“I roomed with Jason (Palmer) on one of the satellite tours for a year so I’m very familiar with him and watching him do that kind of stuff last week is a big inspiration for the rest of us. "We all know we can do it but he goes and proves it so you just want to go and get the better of him this week.
“It’s only day one so I’ve got three rounds left but I certainly feel like I’m playing well enough to be up there on the back nine on Sunday. That’s the goal, if I can do that then hopefully I can give myself some chances and see what happens.”
Lasse Jensen, meanwhile, is another one of those players seeking to break into the top 15 of the Rankings ahead of next week’s season-ending Dubai Festival City Challenge Tour Grand Final hosted by Al Badia Golf Club and the Dane did his chances of achieving that goal no harm with a six under opening 66.
Jensen, who currently lies in 17th place in the Rankings, was one of the unlucky players to be caught in the middle of a brief storm midway through his round and while he did have an umbrella handy on day one, he envisaged it would be utilised for quite a different purpose.
“Me and my caddie were talking this morning about using our umbrella for the sun,” he said. “Then the rain came out and the suddenly umbrella came in handy for other reasons!
“It only rained for one or two holes though. The rain wasn’t too bad but the little sandstorm was worse, because it got into your eyes and onto your skin so it wasn’t too comfortable.
“This start was really what I was hoping for. There are only two weeks left, so to shoot a really good round in the second last tournament is important. No matter where I finish this week, every point is important for the Rankings, but hopefully my game is good enough and I can get a big result and next week will just be a week for fun.”
Jensen was two shots clear of third-placed Gareth Shaw, who celebrated his 29th birthday in style as he signed for an impressive four under par 68 to move into contention for a maiden Challenge Tour title.

SCOT IN DRIVING SEAT A EUROPRO TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

ELLIOT SALTMAN LEADS BY TWO WITH

A ROUND TO GO AT RED SEA

NEWS RELEASE
BY NICK TEALE

Elliot Saltman will take a two-shot lead into the final round of the PGA EuroPro Tour's Visit Egypt Tour Championship after carding a one-under-par 71 on a windy and testing second round at the Red Sea resort's El Gouna Golf Club, taking his tournament score to -6.

Alex Wrigley (Hartlepool), Nick McCarthy (Moortown) and James Frazer (Pennard) share second on four under after second rounds of 71, 72, and 72 respectively.

Saltman (Archerfield Links) began the day one clear on -5 and advanced to -7 with birdies at two and five before slipping back with a double bogey on the eighth.
Birdies at nine, 11 and 16 followed but bogeys at 12 and 17 restricted him to -6.

The Scot currently sits 13th on the Race To El Gouna and while a win would see him secure a category on the 2015 Challenge Tour, second place may also be enough for Saltman to move into the all-important top five.

“I played well again today and got off to a good start,” reflected the leader. “I hit a bad tee shot into the water on eight and made six but made birdies at nine and 11. I got my club selection wrong on 12 and made bogey. I held in and had a couple more chances and managed to birdie 16. It was a poor tee shot on the 17th.

“It was tough conditions with the wind. We have one more round to go and I need to try and do the same things I have for the last couple of days.

“The wind makes a big difference, the course is playing really, really tough. If you just miss the greens the lies can be tricky. It has to be fairways and greens.”

Behind leader Saltman and the three players two back on -4, Darryn Lloyd (Toft Hotel), Laurie Canter (Saltford) and James Robinson (Southport and Ainsdale) share seventh on three under par.

The Visit Egypt Tour Championship is a 54-hole strokeplay event, with the final round taking place on Friday, October 31. Only the top 60 on the Race To El Gouna after the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour’s 16 regular-season events were invited. A two-hour highlights package of the event will be broadcast on Sky Sports HD on Tuesday, November 11.

At the conclusion of the event the top five golfers on the Race To El Gouna, who are not otherwise exempt, will earn a category on the 2015 Challenge Tour.

JHA SHOWS FORM TO LEAD TAKE

SOLUTIONS INDIA MASTERS

Bengaluru, India: India’s Abhishek Jha continued his good form at the inaugural TAKE Solutions India Masters by matching his opening-day effort with another six-under-par 66 to take the second- round lead today.
Sweden’s Nils Floren also set the stage alight by powering his way to the summit with a 62 to trail Jha by one shot at the halfway stage of the first Asian Development Tour (ADT) event to be launched in India.
Overnight leader S Chikka of India lurked closely behind the Swede by posting for a 70 to secure third place at the US$70,000 ADT event held at the Eagleton Golf Resort in Bengaluru.
Starting the day in third place, Jha quickly used his intimate knowledge of his home course to move two spots up to lead the chasing pack with his two-day total of 12-under-par 132.
An opening birdie on the par-four first followed by another birdie on four and an eagle-three on seven got Jha on his way in his opening front-nine.
The Indian then marked his card with another red number on 10 before signing off for the day with his final birdie on 17.
“There’s so much positive energy inside me now. I started with an eagle yesterday and today it was a birdie that got me going! It helps when you are playing on your home course too,” said the 27-year-old.
This will be the first time Jha is taking the lead heading into the final 36 holes and he is looking forward to tighten his grip on his position.
“It’s exciting to know that I’m going to be the leader heading into the last two rounds. I’m going to try my best,” smiled Jha.
Playing at the Eagleton Golf Resort for the first time, Floren admitted that he was lucky to have put himself into a commanding position heading into the final two rounds.
The Swede was a man on fire as he reached the turn quickly in five-under after firing three birdies and an eagle-two on the par-four six.
He continued his amazing run with further birdies on holes 10, 14, 15, 16 and 18 to set himself nicely for his maiden ADT win.
“This is my first time playing on this golf course and I guess I’ve been lucky. Everything went my way and my putter was really hot. I managed to sink so many good putts which is wonderful!”
Floren earned his Asian Tour card at Qualifying School in 2012 but failed to retain his playing rights for the subsequent seasons.
The Swede is, however, enjoying a new lease of life on the ADT where he has enjoyed five top-10s and is currently in eighth place on the ADT Order of Merit.
With only the top-five players earning their Asian Tour cards for next season, Floren knows it is going to be a tough fight to the finishing line but remains confident of playing on the main Tour judging from his performance today.
“That’s my goal (finishing top-five). I’ve been working hard all season for it and hopefully with a performance like today, I can secure it with two events remaining after this week,” said Floren.
Meanwhile Chikka, a three-time winner on the domestic circuit, is determined to put up a good showing in memory of his grandfather who passed away last week.
“It’s been an emotional time for me since I lost my grandfather last week. But my family encouraged me to focus on my game and do what he would have liked me to do.
"I know he’s watching over me from above and I really want to make him proud this week,” said Chikka.
Chikka could have held on to his lead if not for a triple-bogey seven on the ninth hole where his shot got stuck in the tree, forcing him to take penalty drop.
“It was really unfortunate on the ninth hole but I guess that’s golf. I just have to look ahead and I’m going to play aggressive golf to put myself in a good position,” said Chikka.

KARLBERG TAKES TWO-SHOT LEAD AT

CIMB CLASSIC IN KUALA LUMPUR

Kuala Lumpur: Sweden’s Rikard Karlberg surged into a two-shot first round lead at the US $7 million CIMB Classic after firing a bogey-free seven-under-par 65 today.
The 27-year-old became the first Asian Tour player to hold the lead in the five-year history of the prestigious tournament, thanks to an outward 31 which included a chip-in birdie on the eighth hole at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club’s West course.
Angelo Que of the Philippines, who is a three-time Asian Tour winner, American duo Billy Hurley III and Brian Stuard are tied second in the event sanctioned by the US PGA TOUR and Asian Tour.
Defending champion Ryan Moore of the United States birdied his last four holes for a 68 for a share of fifth place
“My putting was great after a hot start and then it was a little bit so-so,” said Karlberg, who is a two-time Asian Tour winner.
“I did an important par on 13 and kept my round going and it was nice to finish with those two extra ones (17 and 18) at the end.”
After struggling with a virus infection for over a year, the 2010 Asian Tour rookie of the year knows he must dig deep to stay ahead of the pack for a chance of winning his biggest career victory.
“I’ve been struggling with a virus infection where I get the flu symptoms. That gets you a little bit stressed out and I realised that I can’t really do anything about it.
"Just try to eat as well as I can, at least that’s what the doctors say,” explained Karlberg, who finished tied fifth here at the Malaysian Open in April.
“I was a little bit frustrated before the two last tournaments coming into this week. Now I’m out there to have fun and that made a big difference. It is not every day that I play in this kind of big tournaments and I love this track because it fits my game.”
The flamboyant Que, one of the most colourful characters on Tour, continued his hot form in a round that included seven birdies. The Filipino qualified for the CIMB Classic after finishing second at the Hong Kong Open a fortnight ago.
“I’m trusting myself where back before every time I’m teeing up, I’m still debating what to do, what kind of shot I’m going to hit. These past few weeks, I’ve just been stick to my game plan and every time I have a shot, I commit to it, trusting it,” said Que.
Starting from the 10th hole, title holder Moore was level-par through 14 holes but was rewarded for his patience when he ended day one with four birdies including a 25-footer on the ninth green.
“I wasn’t hitting bad shots. They just weren’t quite turning out, and I missed a couple of greens in a couple of tough spots, and sometimes making good up-and-downs and par savers are almost more important than making birdies,” said Moore, who won the event in a dramatic Monday play-off last year.
The 50-year-old Davis Love turned back the clock with  a round of four birdies and two bogeys for joint fifth place on 68. His highlight of the day was a twenty footer eagle on the par five 10th hole.
“You know, and I was off for a couple of years.  I wasn't playing well, and I was physically wasn't ready to play with my injury, and then trying to come back from that injury, I think my confidence was just not there 18 holes a day.  It's there about 14.  I hope I can just keep working on that and doing positive,” said Love.

BMW MASTERS FIRST-ROUND REPORT, SCORES

FRENCHMAN LEVY CONTINUES

CHINESE LOVE AFFAIR

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Frenchman Alexander Levy picked up where he left off in China by carding a flawless seven under par 65 in the first round of the BMW Masters.
The 24 year old won the China Open in April – his maiden European Tour victory – and on his return he again showed an affinity for the Far East at Lake Malaren Golf Club in Shanghai, where he leads by one shot from Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts, Argentinian Emiliano Grillo and fellow Frenchman Romain Wattel.
Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell is another shot back at five under, while his Ryder Cup team-mates Thomas Bjørn and Jamie Donaldson are at four under.
Levy, who won the rain-affected Portugal Masters three weeks ago, made light work of the wet conditions – which made the long course play even longer – starting his round with four consecutive birdies and finishing with another at the par four ninth.
The BMW Masters is the first event of The Race to Dubai’s Final Series, a lucrative four-tournament swing which will also take in the WGC-HSBC Champions and the Turkish Airlines Open by the Ministry of Youth and Sport before the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.
Quotes:

Alexander Levy

“The last three tournaments I’ve played very well and I’ve been very consistent. Today I missed just one fairway. I like to play this kind of golf and to be aggressive, and I need to be like this for the rest of the week. You need to hit it long and straight here and I did that today.

"The course is very long and on the par fours you’re going into the green with a five or six iron. I like courses like that, and with the greens being soft you can go for the flags.
“I think this country likes me! This course is very similar to Shenzen and obviously I really liked that one when I won earlier this year.”

Nicolas Colsaerts

“I played well all day. I managed to play the par fives very well, which is not always my strength to be honest for somebody who hits it as long as me. The eagle at the 15th was a bonus – I hit a three wood to about 15 feet and holed the putt. After Hong Kong I spent a week in Thailand where my caddie, Brian, lives. It was great. I didn't really play that much, just chilled. It's been a long couple of years, so I was due a week of doing nothing and I really enjoyed it.”

Graeme McDowell

“I got here Tuesday morning and I haven't really been feeling my best the last couple of days. It’s my first long trip of the year and the body took a little bit of time to catch up. Thankfully a couple of nights’ sleep and I felt much, much better this morning, and the energy level has felt good again. I generally swung the club quite well. Coming off the back of the World Match Play a couple weeks ago, I felt my game was in good shape. I’m obviously looking for a big finish to the season, and that was a nice way to start.
