WEST OF SCOTLAND LEAGUE AND YOUTHS' TITLE

RENFREWSHIRE'S DOUBLE VICTORY

 RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION PRESS RELEASE
turnberry.db@gmail.com
There was a distinct lack of champagne and celebration at Erskine Golf Club when the Renfrewshire Golf Union A team returned to the clubhouse after achieving the victory over Dunbartonshire Golf Union which was required for the West League Championship title.
This may well have had something to do with the fact that both golfers and spectators were cold and wet, having experienced weather which was not conducive to outdoor activities.  The victory was toasted with hot soup and Bovril.

In the first game, Matt Clark, having travelled 150 miles from Aberdeen to be there, was one down with three to play against Dalmuir’s Steven Stewart but showed his international class and determination to win by one hole.
Team captain, Ronnie Clark, and Michael Daily were on home soil and they both took advantage with convincing wins.
Andy Farmer (Kilmacolm) then made it four with a 5 and 3 win over Kevin Smith (Windyhill) and Whitecraig’s Gordon Stevenson made sure that the championship trophy stayed in Renfrewshire for the 13th year in a row when he shook hands with Chris Prior (Bearsden) at the 14th.

The remaining golfers were then offered the choice of continuing their games or settling for a half and the comfort of the clubhouse.  Much to the delight of the spectators, they opted for the latter although the course had withstood the challenges of the weather remarkably well.

Congratulations to Ronnie Clark, team manager David Macfarlane and the A team squad which won all its matches and secured the championship with a match in hand.

In the Youth Championship, Renfrewshire needed a victory over Dunbartonshire at Milngavie and for league leaders, Ayrshire, to lose against Lanarkshire to win the league.
Ayrshire lost 5-3 and Renfrewshire won 6.5 to 1.5 to make it a double.
