LEVEL-PAR AGGREGATE LEAVES HIM SHARING 47th POSITION

MONTY SET FOR LAST-PLACE FINISH

IN US SENIORS' TOUR EVENT

Colin Montgomerie was sharing last place - tied 47th - as American Michael Allen headed for victory in the US Champions Tour's AT and T Championship at San Antonio, Texas.
The Scot had rounds of 68, 76 and 72 for a level par total of 216.
Monty has achieved so much success in a comparatively short time but that second-round 76, where he finished with a double bogey, was his worst single round since he joined the over-50s circuit in the States.
Allen, who had earlier rounds of 70 and 65 for nine-under 135, continued to pick up birdies in his final round and had a commanding lead with only a few holes to play.

LATE DRAMA IN US PGA TOUR EVENT ON SEA ISLAND, GEORGIA

 STREB IS THE MILLION-DOLLAR MAN!

 Last-round 63, then wins three-man play-off

American Robert Streb, 27, achieved his first victory on the US PGA Tour by winning a three-man play-off with a birdie at the second extra hole to win the $1,008,000 first prize in the McGladrey Classic at Sea Island, Georgia today.
Streb caught the leaders with a final round of seven-under-par 63 in which he had nine birdies and two bogeys.
He birdied the third, fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth in an outward 31. Then he birdied the 14th, 15th, 165h and 17th for 32 home.
He finished with a 14-under-par total of 266, matching the totals of long-time front-runners Will MacKenzie, who finished with a 68, and Brendon de Jonge (Zimbabwe) who signed off with a 65 to get into the play-off.
MacKenzie was eliminated in the play-off with a bogey at the first hole (the 18th). Then Streb won the second extra hole, a par-3, with a birdie 2 from about 4ft. De Jonge just missed with his 25ft putt for a 2.
Overnight joint leader Andrew Svoboda after three successive 66s, slid out of the title reckoning with a final round of one-over-par 71 for a total of 269 and joint eighth place. He was still in with a chance with five or six holes to play but contrived to bogey three of them with no compensating birdies.

AUSSIE MURDACA WINS ASIA-PACIFIC AM, EARNS MASTERS INVITE

Antonio Murdaca of Australia won the Asia-Pacific Amateur by a record seven shots.
FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE
Final scores

Antonio Murdaca, pictured above with the trophy, became the first Australian winner of the Asia-Pacific Amateur on Sunday, and will reap the benefits on the other side of the world in April.
With his seven-shot victory at Royal Melbourne Golf Club, Murdaca earned an invitation to the 2015 Masters. He also is exempt into Open Championship qualifying.
Murdaca built an eight-shot lead with a third-round 67, and kept it mostly intact with a final-round 1
one-under 71.
By finishing seven shots clear of runner-up Horikawa Mikumu, Murdaca set a tournament record for biggest margin of victory. He finished 72 holes at 13-under 275 (69-68-67-71).
The night before the final round, Murdaca, a 19-year-old from Adelaide in South Australia, set two alarms to make sure he made the bus to the course. He didn’t have any trouble waking up.
Murdaca bogeyed Nos. 7 and 9, allowing Mikumu to close the gap to five shots. Murdaca made a 20-foot birdie putt at the par-4 10th to move things in the right direction again. He hit two pure shots at the par-5 14th to birdie again, and grow his lead to seven shots.
Murdaca closed with four pars, and calmly acknowledged the crowd surrounding the 18th green.
“When I hit that shot, I felt some tingles down my spine,’’ he said of the final putt.
Australians fared well in their home country. Three of Murdaca’s compatriots finished inside the top 10. First-round leader Todd Sinnott ended up third at 5 under, and Ryan Ruffels, the 16-year-old who regularly plays out of Royal Melbourne, finished fourth another two shots back, thanks in large part to a final-round 68.
“It’s special,’’ said Murdaca. “It’s a dream that’s come true for me now, and I always wanted to play in the Masters and it’s so exciting now knowing I’ve got a spot in there, and also in the Qualifying Series for the Open at St Andrews.’’
As for Japanese player Horikawa, a runner-up finish still merits him a spot in Open Championship qualifying. Weekend rounds of 67-69 at challenging Royal Melbourne made for an exciting chase.
“I really wanted to win and be able to go to the Masters next spring as well, but to try and overcome a nine-stroke difference from the third round was really challenging,’’ he said.
“To finish second and go to the Open Championship qualifying will be a wonderful experience.’’
The 2015 Asia-Pacific Amateur will be played at Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club in Hong Kong on Oct. 1-4.

DAFT IDEA BY MERCEDES-BENZ ....

KAYMER v LANGER LONG-DRIVING

CONTEST ... WITH PUTTERS!
Mercedes-Benz issued a long-drive putter challenge, and wouldn't you know it, Mercedes-Benz brand ambassadors Martin Kaymer and Bernhard Langer decided to take them up on it, film it, and put it on YouTube. Funny how that works.
Regardless of how they came to take the challenge, Kaymer and Langer both passed it with flying colours, each taking three swings with their putter and improving their drives each time.
Kaymer maxed out at 232 yards. Langer could only muster the strength to get it 208 yards. So the reigning U.S. Open champion can drive the ball with his putter better than this year's best Champions Tour player. Aren't you glad you now have that info in your back pocket?

EDITOR'S NOTE: We do not advise you to do this at home - or at your golf club, for that matter. Putters can be very expensive and certainly not made to be drivers so unless you are quite prepared to damage your putter beyond repair, DON'T DO IT!

The tournament was cut from its scheduled 54 holes to only one round because of heavy rain which flooded the course on the opening day and SNOW made it the third round unplayable.
Glenbervie totalled 151 with a 75 by Craggs and a 76 by Johnston.
Moore had the non-counting score, a 78.
Parco de Roma GC (Italy) and Clube de golfe de Vilamoura (Portugal) headed the best two-from-three-players team totals with 138 apiece - five shots ahead of joint third placed  Keerbergen GC (Germany) and Keilir GC (Bulgaria).
The title went to the Italians on the tie-breaking rule which was a comparison of the scores by the third players in the teams. Parco de Roma discarded a 72 to a 75 by Vilamoura.
Southport and Ainsdale finished joint ninth on 147, Tranmore (Ireland) joint 11th on 148 and St Pierre (Wales) finished 20th on 157.

FORRES AMATEUR'S ONE-OVER 70 IS BEST AT INVERNESS

WRIGHT WINS NORTH ALLIANCE

AFTER GODSMAN'S PENALTY DROP

Jeff Wright  from Forres won the top scratch prize at the North Scottish Golfers' Alliance fixture at Inverness on Saturday with a one-over-par 70.
But it was a close-run thing in the end.
Wright recovered from bogeys at the second and fourth with a run of four birdies, at the fifth, seventh, 11th and 12th, and was two under par on the 13th tee.
However, he then bogeyed the 13th, 14th and 16th.

That left the door open for Hopeman's Kyle Godsman who came to the 18th needing a birdie to win or a par to tie Wright.
Instead he finished with a bogey after having to take a drop under penalty and returned a 71, one behind winner Wright.

WELL KNOWN GOLF ADMINISTRATOR PASSED AWAY SATURDAY NIGHT

DEATH OF EDDIE SHERRY, SECRETARY

OF MIDLAND ALLIANCE FOR 23 YEARS

Eddie Sherry, a stalwart of the Midland Golfers' Alliance for almost a quarter of a century, died on Saturday night. He had been ill for some time.
Monifith professional and Midland Alliance treasurer Lee Sutherland paid the following tribute to Mr Sherry:
"As you all know Eddie was the Midland Golfers’ Alliance and he served us a secretary for 23 years. In that time he nearly doubled the amount of venues we played through the winter and made it into the success it is now.
"For me personally it was Eddie who got me involved when he asked or more like told me, I was going to be the new treasurer. He was very persuasive!

"Eddie has been missed at the meetings since he took ill and I am sure he will be missed at all our venues as their staff, always ask about him. Although Eddie did not reach the heady heights of the Amateur game, he made it possible for a lot of golfers to achieve their ambitions through his administration talents’ in Fife. For a wee Fifer he was a giant of Administration.
"Our thoughts are with Helen and family at this time.

"Funeral details will become available in the coming days."

INDIA'S LAHIRI WINS WITH FINAL ROUND OF 66

AUSSIE HEND BOGEYS LAST HOLE TO

LOSE MACAU OPEN VICTORY CHANCE

ASIAN TOUR NEWS RELEASE
Macau: Indian star Anirban Lahiri claimed a sensational one-stroke victory at the US$900,000 Venetian Macau Open after front-runner Scott Hend of Australia agonisingly bogeyed the last hole
Lahiri started the final round two shots behind overnight leader Hend and trailed by four at one stage at the Macau Golf and Country Club before rallying on the home stretch to pip Hend and Thailand’s Prom Meesawat.
The 27-year-old Indian signed for a final round of five-under-par 66, which included six birdies, and a winning aggregate of 17-under-par 267.

The winner’s cheque of US $162,000 raised his season’s tally to US $504,689 as he consolidated his second place on the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit and narrowed the gap on leader David Lipsky of the United States.
Hend, the defending champion who arrived in Macau in top form after winning the Hong Kong Open last week, lipped out a par putt from four feet on the 72nd hole as the roles reversed from last year’s edition where Lahiri was the runner-up. Hend settled for a 69 while Prom charged up the leaderboard with a 66.
“It’s really special. Hendy was playing great golf and it was sad to see him missing that putt on the last,” said Lahiri, who secured his second win of the season and fifth Asian Tour victory.
“I knew he was playing some good golf and I told myself that I was going to keep coming back, keep coming back and keep attacking. I wanted to make him think I was not going to go away. I think I played really well.”
Hend took charge early on and doubled his overnight lead to four shots after nailing an eagle on two and a birdie on seven.

However, a tenacious Lahiri fought back with birdies on eight and nine to make the turn only two back. The pivotal moment came on 14 when Lahiri hit a superb seven iron into the par three hole for an easy birdie while Hend bogeyed.
Lahiri, who had opened his campaign with a stunning 61 on Thursday, then led for the first time in the final round with a birdie on 15 but Hend leveled with a birdie at the next hole until his slip-up at the last.
“I hit a perfect golf shot on 14,” said Lahiri. “I had just missed a putt at the previous hole and I knew I needed a birdie to catch Hendy and that was just magic the way it came down. I hit a seven iron as hard and high as I could and it came out perfect. One of the best shots of the week.
“I was chasing all day and on 14, that’s where the momentum switched a bit. It’s fantastic to win my second of the year. I missed the cut last week (in Hong Kong) after a long time so I had time to think about what I was doing wrong and how was I was not thinking positively on the course. I’m happy I managed to turn that around.

Hend was disappointed he missed his par putt which would have forced a play-off and also the opportunity to join China’s Zhang Lian-wei as the only two-time Venetian Macau Open champion.
“I hit too many loose shots and then on the last hole, I had a lip out which I thought I put a good putt on it.” said Hend.
Prom came home strongly in 32 but fell one short shy of forcing a play-off. He rued a rollercoaster start where he went bogey, birdie, bogey, birdie in his opening four holes.

“I had a good back nine but it was up and down in the first four holes. But to finish on five under for the round, I’m happy. My goal was to stay inside the top-three. It was not going to be easy to catch Hendy or Anirban,” said Prom.

DAVID LAW SIGNS OFF WITH A 66 FOR JOINT 14TH PLACE

JASON PALMER COMPLETES CHINESE TAKEAWAY

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Jason Palmer rounded off a wire-to-wire victory at the Foshan Open with an impressive round of 69 to win by a stroke from compatriot Ben Evans and claim a career-changing first European Challenge Tour title.
On a muggy afternoon at Foshan Golf Club, the Englishman handled the pressure with aplomb, carding four birdies to extend his advantage, before a nervy three-putt bogey at the penultimate hole made things interesting heading down the last.
His tee shot at the par five found the centre of the fairway though, and when a pin-point lay-up was followed by a typically precise wedge, all that was required were two putts for a 15 under par total and the title.
Palmer duly obliged, tapping in from a foot to rubber stamp a win that sees him rocket up the Rankings, thanks to a cheque for €43,594 and a certain dietary tradition he established earlier in the week.
“Absolutely - I did go again to McDonalds last night, and I think I was about the 20th player in the queue,” said the 30 year old from England’s East Midlands, who climbs 31 places to 12th on the Rankings.
“I just feel so over the moon. It is a total dream come true. I set out at the start of this season and my goal was to try and win, as I have won at a lower level but never here.
"It might have taken me 22 events this season, but I have finally done it, and I’m ecstatic.
“I really surprised myself with how calm I was today, and what helped was hitting good shots, so there was no reason to get stressed. I was in control of my golf ball today, and when I am playing well I don’t get as stressed.
"It is only when you hit the odd shot offline that you can have problems in a round.
“The strategy all week was to try and leave it below the hole on the greens to give myself an uphill putt, and at times it can feel like you are playing defensive, but actually you’re playing it smart. You’re going to hole a few putts if you leave it below the hole, and make a few birdies along the way, but the course was a good test and the scoring showed that.
“I don’t come from a privileged background and golf is an expensive sport to play, and certainly professionally, your expenses throughout a season can total around £15,000 to 20,000. So without the help of other people I wouldn’t have even been able to play, and I just want to thank everyone who has helped me throughout my career.
"They know who they are, and I’m so grateful to them for giving me the opportunity to play.
“To think that I am now so close to graduating to The European Tour is crazy, and once this has settled in I will have to refocus for the final two events, and hopefully I can keep this form going and earn enough to secure my card. That really would be a dream come true.”
Despite coming up just short of a first title of his own, it was a still a stand- out week for runner-up Evans, who posted the best finish of his Challenge Tour career.
It has been an up and down few years for the man from Kent, but five birdies, an eagle and a single dropped shot on Sunday were enough to see him run Palmer as close as anyone on the last day.
Starting out the Final Swing – encompassing the closing four events of the season – the Englishman’s goal was to secure his place in the Dubai Festival City Challenge Tour Grand Final hosted by Al Badia Golf Club, but with a place in the top 45 secured, he can now turn his attentions to graduation.
“I gave it my best shot on the back nine, but I’m pleased with how I played today,” said Evans, who heads to Oman next week one place shy of the top 15.
“I’ve had some good rounds here and there this season, but not really put four together. I’ve had some very good, and some not so good in the middle of the year, but I changed what I was doing hallway through and it has paid off.
“This year has been a move back in the right direction, but you’ve just got to play consistently out here. You still need to take advantage of your good weeks, but if you can finish top 20 every week you will move up eventually.
“I’m going to be pretty tired when we get to Oman tomorrow morning, but I have enjoyed China. This week we have been treated unbelievably, as good as any European Tour event I have played at. It has been great, a credit to everyone who has been involved.”
As for the rest of the chasing pack – Jason Barnes, Jens Fahrbring and Mark Tullo rounded out the podium places at 13 under par after rounds of 70, 68 and 68, respectively.
Matthew Fitzpatrick shot the round of the day – a 65 – which was also the lowest of his fledgling professional career. That vaulted him 22 places on the final day and into a tie for sixth alongside compatriots Daniel Gaunt (70), Chris Hanson (71) and Chris Paisley (70), as well as Sweden’s Pelle Edberg (70) and Scotland’s Andrew McArthur (68). McArthur earned 7,538 euros
Aberdeen's David Law finished the tournament on a high with a 66 to share 14th place. The Northern Open champion from the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre stable earned 4,087 Euros for his latest performance and is now 69th on the Challenge Tour rankings.

COLIN MONTGOMERIE SAGS TO A 76 ON CHAMPIONS TOUR

MARCO DAWSON'S BIRDIE BLITZ TO

LEAD IN TEXAS

CBSSports.com wire reports

SAN ANTONIO -- Marco Dawson birdied four of the first six holes Saturday and shot a 5-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead in the Champions Tour's AT and T Championship, and Bernhard Langer moved closer to wrapping up the Charles Schwab Cup before the season-ending event next week.
In contrast, Colin Montgomerie had dreadful second day - a second-round 76, culminating in a double-bogey 6 at the 18th, for two-round tally of 144 and joint 49th place
Dawson also birdied two of the last four holes to reach 12-under 132 on TPC San Antonio's AT and T Canyons Course. He won his only title in a US PGA Tour-sanctioned event in 2002 in the Web.com Tour's LaSalle Bank Open.

''I'm not going to lose any sleep, believe me,'' Dawson said. ''I used to be a perfectionist, but my attitude now is to play like I'm in the pro-am. Have fun. It's not life or death out there.''
Woody Austin was second after a 65, and Wes Short Jr. was 10 under after a 67.
Langer, a five-time winner this season, was tied for eighth at 7 under after a 66. He has a 771-point lead over second-place Colin Montgomerie in the Schwab Cup and can take the title with an 833-point advantage.
''It would be nice to settle things while I'm here,'' Langer said.
Montgomerie was tied for 49th at even par after a 76. He had a double bogey on No. 18.
The top 30 on the money list after the tournament will advance to the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship next week in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Austin eagled the par-5 15th, hitting a 3-wood approach to 25 feet.
''I was 240 yards to the front of the green and 260 to the hole, and I hit a dead straight shot in there,'' said Austin, who won his fourth US PGA Tour title last year in the Sanderson Farms event in Mississippi. ''It was the shot I was trying to hit. My putt was a double-breaker. I was just trying to get it close. I would have been happy with that, I admit.''

DRYSDALE HOLES BIRDIE PUTT AT 18th

TO KEEP EUROPEAN TOUR CARD

REPORT FROM ESPN.COM WEBSITE AND

PERTH, West Australia -- Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark made a series of spectacular saves in defence of a shrinking lead to shoot a 1-under 71 Sunday and win the Perth International golf tournament by three shots.
Olesen started the final round with a three-shot lead which dropped to one after 12 holes in the face of a concerted charge by Frenchman Victor Dubuisson, who matched the day's best round of 66 to finish outright second.
Olesen made good his win with a vital birdie on the par-5 15th to claim his second European Tour title with a 17-under total of 271.
His two birdies, one bogey and 15 pars didn't entirely reflect a checkered final round on Perth's 7,131yd Lake Karrinyup Golf and Country Club course.
Dubuisson started in eighth place, six shots off the lead, moved up the leaderboard with two birdies on his outward nine, then a sequence of four birdies between the 11th and 15th holes. His card was unblemished, with six birdies in total, but he couldn't close further on Olesen who kept his nerve in trying positions.
"I missed a few short putts in the middle of the round. I think the lead got down to one shot and I was just thinking about getting my round back to under par, keeping loose and seeing if I could make a few birdies coming in," Olesen said.
"It was a tough day but it was worth it. That walk down 18 was beautiful."
Dubuisson finished at 14-under and England's Mark Foster was outright third at 13-under.
Olesen's win was his seventh as a professional and his second on the European Tour after the 2012 Sicilian Open.
Former U.S. Masters champion Charl Schwartzel of South Africa shot a 72 to finish in a tie for 15th, while Jason Duffner, in his first tournament after almost three months off with a neck injury, finished at 6-under in a share of 23rd.
Olesen showed his scrambling ability as early as the par-5 seventh hole when he hooked his drive into trees but played out and got up and down for a birdie. He put his drive in a deep fairway bunker on the par-5 11th hole, was forced to lay up, but again made a birdie.
The Dane bogeyed the 10th hole, then faced the biggest crisis of his round when he hit his tee shot over the back of the green at the par-3 12th and made bogey.
At the same time, Dubuisson birdied the 13th to move into outright second place, one shot behind.
Olesen steadied himself with a birdie on the 13th, restoring a two-shot advantage. He ventured into trees again off the 14th, but saved par and then gave himself the confidence of a three-shot margin when he birdied the 15th.
"I actually made a great two putt on six for bogey, which was very important, then the birdie on seven," he said. "My driving and a couple of three woods also were off line.
"It made it quite tricky for me but I holed some great putts coming in, really important putts and it was just a great feeling to see them rolling in the hole."
As well as deciding the outcome of the title, today was make-or-break for those chasing a place in the top 111 on The Race to Dubai to earn a card for next season.
The likes of Sihwan Kim and Peter Whiteford had threatened to produce heroics earlier in the week, but South Korea’s Kim paid a hefty price for a triple bogey at the eighth and a closing 75 saw him fall short of the runner-up finish required in a tie for ninth.

Similarly halfway leader Whiteford, who also needed to be in the top two, endured a difficult weekend with rounds of 75 and 78 to fall short.
The Kirkcaldy-born player was 12-under 132 for his first 36 holes and nine-over 153 for the combined third and fourth rounds.
In the end England’s Lee Slattery, who missed the cut on Friday, suffered the greatest heartache as he slipped two places to 112th.
Compatriot Matthew Nixon had started the week in the firing line at 111th, but was rewarded for a 12th made cut in 15 events by climbing to 110th, with Anthony Wall taking the final spot.
Edinburgh-born David Drysdale produced courageous 30 foot birdie at the last to move into a tie for fourth on 277, scoring 71 in the third and fourth rounds, to climb from 116th up past the saftety mark to 103rd, but Italy’s Andrea Pavan made a gut-wrenching double bogey on the 18th which cost last year’s challenge Tour Number One his card.

Said Drysdale: “I am still shaking from that putt on the last. Not the best of days as I struggled a bit but standing in the fairway on the last with 202 yards into the wind and a three iron in my hand thinking I had to get up and down to have a chance.
"To see that putt drop on the last was unbelievable. I came here thinking I had to finish seventh to keep my card so I'm delighted.”
