DAVID MACFARLANE WINS RENFREWSHIRE COUNTY TITLE

                                       RENFREWSHIRE GOLF UNION
                                 PRESS RELEASE

                                 turnberry.db@gmail.com

EXPERIENCE OVERCOMES YOUTH IN RENFREWSHIRE COUNTY FINAL

The line up for the final of the Renfrewshire Golf Union Match Play Championship at Paisley Golf Club saw young Craig Pirie from Renfrew facing Greenock’s David Macfarlane who is coy about his age but seems to have been around for some time.
Two Paisley members had made it to the semi finals but Craig saw off Chris Guthrie one up while David expended a bit more energy having been taken to the fourth extra hole by Brian Adam.
The quality of golf in the final came as no surprise.  At the turn, Craig’s card showed nine straight pars but he was two down.  David sank an outrageous putt for a birdie three at the third then knocked his second to “gimmie” range at the sixth.
David then dropped a shot at the tenth to let Craig back into the game but bogies at twelve and thirteen had David three up and looking good.  Craig responded at fifteen for his first birdie of the day to reduce the deficit but, having caught the rough, could not get home in two at the par five sixteenth.  David got his four and won 3 and 2.  A great performance.

David Macfarlane becomes the most successful Renfrewshire golfer in terms of Match Play Championships having previously won at East Renfrewshire (2000), Fereneze (2004) and Eastwood (2007).  He had previously shared the record of three wins with the late, great Barclay Howard.  David is currently manager of the County A Team but one wonders if he should be back in the squad!

VICTORY FOR ENGLAND REPRESENTATIVES AT MAR HALL, BISHOIPTON

INTERNATIONAL AMATEUR  PAIRS – WORLD FINAL

The 2014 International Pairs World Final was held from the 6th- 9th October at The Earl of Mar Golf Club at Mar Hall Golf and Spa Resort, Bishopton.
Now in its 16th year, International Pairs is the largest Club competition of its kind in the World.
This year 15 pairs representing 13 different countries took part over the two days of competition which is played on a better ball Stableford format.
At the end of the first day the England Team of Mark Kelly and Luke Eustace representing Selby Golf Club led with 41 pts from the South African Team of Lyall McNeill and Keith Forde representing Durban Golf and Country Club and the Welsh team of Tony Williams and Chris Glenny who were both on 38points.
The good weather of the first day continued into the second day and this together with the increased familiarity with the course saw most players improve on their first day scores.
Early leaders were the Spain team who added 40 points to their first day total of 33 to give them 73 points, and with the Wales Team fading on the second nine, they were never headed until the last game containing the first round leaders and second placed team came in.
South Africa worked hard to pressurize the England team with Keith Forde carding 3 straight birdies to get within 1 point but the England pair responded well eventually scoring 41 points again to total 82 with the South Africans scoring 40 points for a total of 78 points.
The event was rounded of with the prize giving dinner in Mar Hall Hotel with thanks being given to the greenkeeping staff for the condition of the course and to the organizers for hosting such a superb event.
Full details of the event can be found at www.golffrontiers.com
