MORE RAIN ON THIRD DAY OF PRTUGAL MASTERS

Alexander Levy will take a three shot lead into the third and final round of the weather-affected Portugal Masters on Sunday, despite not playing a single shot on day three.
Levy was one of only two groups to finish his second round on Friday evening, and his 18 under par total – thanks to sublime rounds of 63 and 61 – remained untouched as the rest of the field completed round two a day late.
Thunderstorms and heavy rain marred the second day’s play, causing the tournament to be reduced to 54 holes, and meant Nicolas Colsaerts, Levy’s closest challenger, had to return on Saturday morning to finish the last two holes of his round. He parred them both for a four under par 67 and a 15 under par total.
Felipe Aguilar signed for a seven under par 64, defying more heavy rain at Oceânico Victoria Golf Course in Vilamoura, which has been bone dry for four months prior to this week. The Chilean is in third place on 13 under par.
Quotes:
Alexander Levy
“But I managed to play really good golf and I’m very happy with my game. I have been working on my iron shots a lot with my coach the past few weeks. And I think if you can hit it long, you have a big advantage on this golf course.”

Nicolas Colsaerts
“I struggled to get into my rhythm early yesterday and only shot two under on the front nine. I got to the golf course yesterday at 7am and left at 7.30pm, so it was a pretty long day and it was hard to get any sort of rhythm. As we’ve seen though there are some very low scores out there on this course so a three-shot lead isn’t a lot and we’ll see what happens tomorrow.”

Felipe Aguilar
“I had back-to-back birdies before we stopped and then I was one over for five holes after the break, so I guess it didn’t help me, but sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn’t. It's going to be difficult tomorrow. Alex is playing really well, but this is a course where you can make a lot of birdies and you can make a couple mistakes. It's going to be a fun day tomorrow."

SANDY SCOTT WINS DUNCAN ALAN QUAICH WITH A 74

Highland Junior Golf Championships at Spey Valley 2014

 NEWS RELEASE
Macdonalds Spey Valley Championship Golf Course hosted the Highland Junior Golf Championships. 50 juniors had entered and enjoyed a great day of golf with the morning dew quickly dispelled and sunshine by midday, although still a chill in the air.
The golf course was in great condition. Spey Valley greenstaff had put a great deal of work into preparing the course and setting it up for the best juniors in the North. Over 70% of the field had a single figure handicap and this was topped by Sandy Scott, Nairn Academy and Nairn Golf Club setting the standard with his +2 handicap and even with that added pressure returning a score of 74, one over par to win the Duncan Alan Quaich for winning scratch player.
Runner up in the scratch section was Andrew Moir of Elgin Academy and Elgin Golf Club with 76 and winning by a better inward half from Jake Carpenter, Forres Academy and Forres Golf Club.
Culloden Academy with a score of 224 won the Bruce Robertson Cup for the Highland Schools Team retaining their title and Nairn Academy second as in 2013 with 226 from their top scoring three players. Culloden’s counting players were Matthew Clark, Rory Cromarty and Logan Gillies..
The Handicap section (0-9) for the Skibo Cup was won by James Hawes, Thurso High School and Reay Golf Club with a nett 69 and finishing in style – birdie, eagle, over par 5 and par 4 holes.  This pushed Jake Carpenter into second place with his nett 70 and Andrew Moir took third with a nett 73.
The handicap section (10-18) for the ClubGolf Highland Shield saw Logan Gillies of Loch Ness Golf Club and Culloden Academy retain his title with a nett 67.  Gillies beat Fortrose Academy player Ruaridh Gray, Fortrose Academy and a member at Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club. Rory Cromarty, Culloden Academy who plays his golf at Nairn Golf Club but had to settle for third spot with a good score of nett 75.
Abbie Cruden, Nairn Academy and Nairn Dunbar Golf Club won the Grant Trophy for the best girls' scratch score of 92 and Carinne Taylor came second with a score of 94. Emma Logie from Keith Grammar and Buckpool Golf Club won the Sutherland Cup as best handicap score with nett 87.
Spey Valley Professional, Murray Urquhart presented the prizes. He commented, "Macdonald Spey Valley Championship Golf Course are once again proud to host the Highland Junior Golf Championships for the ninth consecutive year. The excellent scoring reflects the high quality of junior golf in the Highlands. To see so many juniors from every corner of the Highlands to play the course and support the tournament is very encouraging.”

The event was run by Willie MacKay, ClubGolf’s Regional Manager, who said: “It was a pleasure to witness the juniors take on the challenge of the Spey Valley Championship Course and what tremendous condition it was in. Juniors from Northern Counties, North District and Scottish Golf Academy Squads were able to use their golfing skills and test their course management in perfect conditions.”

DEREK MILNE OF UPPER LARGO, FIFE WINS ORDER OF MERIT

St Andrews hosts disabled golf finale
NEWS RELEASE
Disabled golfers travelled to three prestigious golf courses in St Andrews this week to conclude their season and crown the Scottish Order of Merit Champion for 2014.
Golfers from Holland, England and across Scotland competed in Scottish Disability Golf's, 54-hole Classic event over the Dukes, Jubilee and Kittocks Golf Courses.
The three-day event was won by Derek Milne of Upper Largo in Fife, with Paul Cunningham of London in second and Bob Drysdale of Tayport in Fife taking third place.
Jim Gales the event organiser said, "This was the SDGP's tenth birthday and it was coincidental that in 2004 we played some of the same golf courses as did for this event.  This only goes to show how much fantastic support charity has received from the Old Course St Andrews Hotel, the owners of the Dukes, the St Andrews Links Trust, Jubilee Course and the Fairmont St Andrews Bay, Kittocks Course management and staff.  We had three great days for our season's finale and only one day where the weather threatened to disrupt our play, which is not bad considering its October in Scotland?"
After 20 counting events, played over seven months in Scotland and
England, The Scottish Order of Merit championship was retained by Trevor
Crombie of Kirkcaldy, with Derek Milne of Upper Largo in second and Thomas
Kerr Scott of Busby in third.  Throughout the whole season, over seventy
golfers participated in the Championship and over one hundred golfersparticipated in First Swing Clinics and Academy's.
Next for the SDGP members is the Phoenix Cup and SDGP event, played over six
days, in Mesquite Nevad

IRISH GOLF UNION NEWS RELEASE

SUPREME COURT REJECTS TALBOT'S

APPEAL IN STANDARD SCRATCH CASE

Tom Talbot v Hermitage Golf Club, the Golfing Union of Ireland and Eddie Murphy
Supreme Court Appeal Record No: 492/2012

The GUI (Irish Golf Union) has today welcomed the rejection by the Supreme Court of an appeal brought by Mr. Tom Talbot in proceedings taken by him against the Golfing Union of Ireland, Hermitage Golf Club and its former Honorary Secretary.
In 2012 the High Court dismissed Mr. Talbot’s claim that the GUI wrongfully conspired with the other defendants to cause damage to him. In essence, Mr. Talbot claimed that the standard scratch rules administered by the GUI and which applied at the time, facilitated or ‘whitewashed’ the general play adjustments which were applied by the Golf Club to his handicap.

The GUI welcomes the Supreme Court’s rejection of Mr. Talbot’s appeal in its entirety.
Today’s judgment brings finality to the proceedings which commenced in 2006. Since then the GUI has consistently maintained that there was absolutely no basis for Mr. Talbot’s claim. The organisation is now pleased to have had this position vindicated by the High Court and now by the Supreme Court. It is a matter of great regret to the GUI, a voluntary organisation, that it became embroiled in these proceedings in the first place, which were entirely without substance or merit.

Issued by Pat Finn, General Secretary, Golfing Union of Ireland.
