GOLF CHANNEL ANALYST DEFENDS TOM WATSON

Chamblee: Phil's claims of lone-wolf captaincy

'not true'- players were consulted for pairings

After the U.S. Ryder Cup loss, Phil Mickelson took a not-so-subtle jab at Tom Watson, claiming that “nobody here was in any decision” at Gleneagles.
Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee said Wednesday on the John Feinstein Show that that wasn’t necessarily true:
“I know for a fact that all the players were brought together with their caddies and Tom walked amongst them and said, ‘Tell me who you want to play with. Write it down on a sheet of paper, and all of you tell me who you want to play with. Let me know.’ And everyone but one person contributed there.
“So what Phil said was not, in fact, true. They were allowed to contribute – and who they played with was pretty much the way Paul Azinger went about his captaincy.”
Chamblee continued by saying that Watson has been “unfairly denigrated” in the wake of another loss by the Americans, their eighth in the past 10 cups.
“He captained the way he played,” Chamblee said.
"Maybe he didn’t have the best bedside manner, but in an age where you’re rewarded lavishly for succeeding in the game and punished monetarily for failing in the game, in an event where pride is always at stake, if you lose – and I think this is what Tom Watson was trying to get across to his team – there should be some loss of pride.”
And instead of taking shots at Watson, Chamblee said Mickelson might have been better served looking in the mirror.
“Tom Watson wasn't on the last 10 Ryder Cup teams,” Chamblee said. “Nor was Tiger Woods. The one common denominator is Phil Mickelson.
“Phil Mickelson has been on the last 10 Ryder Cup teams. They’ve lost eight of them. I’m not saying it’s Phil’s fault, but it’s not Paul Azinger’s fault that they won and it’s not Tom Watson’s fault that they lost.
The players should take enough pride (and accountability) in the outcome of the Ryder Cup – in particular the player leaders.”

  LANCS ARE ENGLISH SENIOR CHAMPS

      AFTER RAIN-SHORTENED FINAL DAY

Lancashire were crowned English Senior Men’s County Champions for the first time after a storm-hit, disrupted and shortened final day of a difficult week at Hindhead in Surrey.
Having gone into the final day on level terms with defending champions Kent, both counties claiming two victories, everyone was eagerly looking forward to a fitting climax. But it wasn’t to be.
Although the foursomes were completed, albeit with a ten minute suspension for thunder in mid morning, the singles were delayed. Some were started, but after a further delay for lightning and several heavy downpours, play was abandoned.
That meant, according to the championship conditions, that the six singles were declared halves which meant Lancashire won 5-4 having edged the completed foursomes 2-1.
“I’m delighted and proud that we have won this title at last,” said Lancashire captain Stuart Fawcett. “However, I’m disappointed that we didn’t manage to get the six singles away because I would have loved to have won it in a full match on the course.
“But after five or six years of trying and never managing to pull it off it is great to be champions at last. My team has been as one. They have supported each other and all played their part. I know how Kent must feel as we were in the same position last year.”
Kent captain Mark Singfield said: “It’s disappointing for us. Sometimes you are on the right end of a rules decision and sometimes you are on the wrong end. We wouldn’t have chosen to go into lunch 2-1 down but we were looking forward to a very competitive afternoon. In the end the weather won.
“But I offer my congratulations to Stuart and his boys.”

In a week of poor weather with frequent heavy rain and strong winds, it was a shame the climax of such an important event should be handicapped in such a way. But in the end the weather was the winner.
Lancashire’s victory in the foursomes proved crucial in the end. They were indebted to Terry Brown and Glyn Rees who beat Ross Galgut and Phil Bramall 4 and 3 and to Alan Gillespie and Jeremy Morgan, winners by two holes against David Weighton and Bruce Hilsdon.
Kent’s victory was secured by internationals Richard Partridge and Chris Reynolds, who beat Ian Crowther and Tony Holt by two holes.
In the third place match, Gloucestershire and Nottinghamshire shared the foursomes 1½-1½ and despite starting some of the singles, they also fell foul of the weather. So it was agreed that all would be declared halves which meant their overall match was tied.

HEAVY RAIN SHORTENS PORTUGAL MASTERS ' OPENING DAY

 GREAT SCOTT! BUT JAMIESON'S 63

IS TOPPED BY A 60 FROM COLSAERTS

FROM THE EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE

Nicolas Colsaerts missed out on the first ever 59 on The European Tour by the merest of margins on the opening day of the Portugal Masters at the Oceånico Victoria Golf Club at Vilamoura on the Algarve/
The Belgian slid a 20 foot birdie putt agonisingly just past the left-hand lip of the 18th to fall short of the elusive feat by a single stroke.
No player has ever broken 60 in the 42-year history of The European Tour, but Colsaerts looked set to change all that after he followed seven birdies with eagles at the 15th and 17th.
That left the 31 year old needing a birdie going up the last and he responded by sending a typically booming drive straight down the middle of the fairway.
A short iron left him with a makeable putt and, as he walked towards the green, he was able to share a joke with playing partner Branden Grace, who shot 60 at Kingsbarns in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship two years ago.
Colsaerts’ putt looked on course to drop until the final few moments as he instead had to be content with a 60 - the 19th time the score has been managed on The European Tour.
Even more significantly, he was able to head to the clubhouse with a three-shot lead over the rest of the field.
The closest of his rivals were Alexander Levy and Scott Jamieson, who had set the target mark for the afternoon starters with a round of 63.
Frenchman Levy was first to haul in Jamieson, who operated with a new putter after missing the cut in his previous three tournament, after 14 holes but he was unable to go on.
Instead it was Colsaerts who took charge as his recent return to form gathered extreme pace on the back nine.
The 2012 Ryder Cup winner has missed the cut in half of the 14 tournament he has played on The European Tour this season, but has found some touch in the past month.
He had made his past three cuts before heading to the Algarve and last time out finished in a tie for fourth at the ISPS Handa Welsh Open.
A string of four birdies from the ninth moved him to seven under before he leapfrogged Levy and Jamieson into the lead with the first of his eagles as his power dwarfed the 315 yard par four 15th.
At the penultimate hole he was able to clear the water – which Jamieson had earlier found in the only blemish of his round – to open up his chance of a 59 up the last.
"When I made eagle on 15,  I knew then that if I birdied the last three, that would have been 59," Colsaerts said.
"So I parred 16 and then walking down the fairway on 16, I tell Brian after I hit a good drive, I was like: 'It's 59 or nothing'."
Re-living his final hole, he added: "Hit a good drive. It's too bad it (the putt) just shaves the edge.
"I thought it was going to be slightly left to right at the end and it kind of went straight and basically just left it hanging. Too bad, I thought it was a pretty good effort, especially with these dark clouds that we saw at the back. It's a great setting."
The weather forced play to be called off for the day shortly after Colsaerts left the 18th with the players set to resume at 8.15am Friday  morning.
The best of the players yet to finish their opening round was Adrian Otaegui, who is precariously placed at 120th in The Race to Dubai, as he was seven under through 14 holes and level with fellow Spaniard Rafa Cabrera-Bello.
Jamieson earlier shot out of the traps, carding five birdies in his opening seven holes, but then immediately dropped his only shot of the day on the par five 17th - when he found the water with his second.
The Scot finished his round with his eighth and ninth birdies of the day, and was content with his day's work as he found improvement with his new short stick.
"It's a similar style putter, something different to look at," he said.
"I feel like I've been playing really well for the last three months. I had a few top tens a couple months back, and hopefully, this will be the week that I can sort of capitalise on it because I feel tee to green, everything's been very good."
Another Scot, Chris Doak, was in a group of four players who carded 65s to be five shots off the pace.
Doak's flawless round continued a memorable few weeks during which he became a father for the first time before finishing fifth at last week's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and secured his Tour card for the 2015 season.
Chile's Felipe Aguilar and English duo Danny Willett and David Lynn were alongside him on six under while Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley enjoyed a blemish-free 67.

PRACTICE AREA IMPROVEMENT AT ABERDEENSHIRE CLUB

£9,000 LOTTERY FUND BOOST FOR

PETERCULTER JUNIOR FACILITIES

NEWS RELEASE
Peterculter Golf Club has received a boost thanks to the Big Lottery Fund and sportscotland which will enable them to build new facilities for junior members.
The Aberdeenshire club, near Aberdeen, has been given £9,000 by Awards for All Scotland to improve the practice area which will be used to deliver its ClubGolf coaching programme.
Club captain Janette Cook, said: “Peterculter Golf Club has successfully provided ClubGolf junior coaching for over eight years.  We have introduced many children to the sport but we always felt we should develop our own ‘short game practice’ area.

“Until recently, we had the use of a local practice facility but unfortunately this became unavailable.  This was the spur we needed to go ahead with developing our own facility.  An area was identified quite close to the clubhouse and car park which was deemed to be very safe for our juniors to practice.

“Obviously we were financially restrained on how far we could develop the area, but the success of our application to Awards For All Scotland now puts us in a position to progress with the development of a very comprehensive short game practice facility.
"This will enable Trevor Grose, our Head Coach, and his dedicated team to deliver our junior ClubGolf programme.
"This facility will encompass all aspects of the all-important short game - chipping, pitching, bunker play and putting.”
The project is expected to cost around £19,000, with the club adding to the Awards for All funding awarded under the category of “improvements or additions to community buildings or play facilities”. The work, which will be carried out by club staff, will begin on the 120 x 60 yard area at the end of October and weather permitting, should be complete in time for next season.

The suggestion to apply for funding came from Audra Booth, ClubGolf Regional Manager for Grampian.  She said:

“I spoke with Janette initially at a meeting I had at the club about another subject and their practice area came up. I told her that there may be funding available to assist what they were looking to do as they have a lot of children attending their sessions.

"This year for example they had 59. It meant that they had to go to another facility or close holes on their course in order to deliver their coaching sessions, which was no longer safe due to numbers.
“I then met with the club's PGA professional Dean Vannet and Paul Sharp, the head greenkeeper, to find out what they had in mind and asked them to get together the costs and a plan in order to see which funding stream would be most suitable for them to apply to.

“This funding and development will mean that they can deliver the full ClubGolf programme in a safe environment, without having to take their juniors to another facility.
“I have assisted a few clubs in the past although funding is not guaranteed.  Rosehearty, for example, had no practice bunkers and used to take their children onto the beach for those lessons and after a successful Awards For All application they now have two bunkers at their sixth hole.”
Peterculter has a thriving membership with a 122-strong junior section and 14 trained ClubGolf volunteer coaches.

The new area will benefit them and adult members as well as the wider community, with local primary schools being approached to take part in ClubGolf coaching at the club.
Janette added: “We feel as a club it is extremely important to develop and encourage the enthusiasm of our junior members, who, after all, are the future of golf.”
