WINDERMERE PLAYER COMPLETES NORTH-SOUTH DOUBLE

                                              ENGLAND GOLF NEWS RELEASE

Adam Chapman doubles up with North of England crown

Windermere’s Adam Chapman held off a challenge from England A squad team-mate Jamie Bower to clinch the North of England Open amateur stroke-play championship by a single stroke.
His victory means Chapman has completed a North/South double having won the South of England Championship at Walton Heath in July.
The 19 year old England international held his nerve on the fourth and final round at Pannal in a thrilling encounter that was decided on the final hole.
Chapman needed a par on the 18th for victory and a precise iron shot from the tee set up a simple pitch to six feet.
The Cumbrian teenager had started the day with a four-stroke lead over nearest challenger Bower, but bogeys on the third and fourth saw the Yorkshireman, from Meltham quickly trim the gap to one.
Chapman’s birdie on the sixth calmed the nerves and he played steadily until a drive into the trees on the short par four 14th saw him drop a further shot.
However, the set-back proved an inspiration as he birdied the next two holes before dropping a further shot at the 17th. His par on the last saw him finish the round at one over 73.
Chapman put himself in pole position from the start with an opening seven-under-par 65 followed by two rounds of 69.
“I’ve played nicely this week and hit the ball well but I’ve had a bit of luck too with some good lies and bounces. I played with a new putter and that seemed to work well,” he said.
Lifting the Shaw Plate was the second time Chapman has tasted victory at the famous Yorkshire course this season – in July he won the Pannal Rose Bowl by six shots.
Leading final scores:
Par 284 (4x71)
276 A Chapman (Windermere) 65 69 69 73
277 J Bower (Meltham) 68 70 69 70
279 D Brown (Bedale) 71 69 72 67
280 A Wilson (Darlington) 71 70 67 72

ANOTHER WRONG DECISION BY TEAM LEADER COMES TO LIGHT

Bill Haas, not Webb Simpson, was originally a

Tom Watson captain's pick for Ryder Cup

Bill Haas was  Watson’s original third pick for the 2014 U.S. Ryder Cup Team before an impassioned, last-minute plea from Webb Simpson changed his mind.
Watson had decided to use his captain's picks on Haas, Keegan Bradley and Hunter Mahan before flip-flopping and selecting Simpson, a member of the 2012 Ryder Cup team, according to a report in Golfweek.
Simpson was considered a potential captain’s pick for the team after a tie for fifth in the Wyndham Championship in August and a tie for ninth at The Deutsche Bank Championship in early September. He texted Watson after travelling from the Deutsche Bank Championship outside Boston to Colorado for that week’s BMW Championship.
"I texted him, something like, `I know it's a really tough decision for you,’” Simpson told the Associated Press.
“I know Chris (Kirk) just won and I know Bill (Haas) is playing good, and you even have other options than that. But I really, really, really want to be on the team and I really want to represent the United States. I love this format, and I'll do anything to be on the team.' Something to that extent."
Watson then called Simpson in the wee hours of the morning the day he was to announce his picks during a live broadcast in New York City.
"I just told him about my passion for the Ryder Cup from my one experience, and how much I cared about it, and how much I believed I thought I could bring to the team," Simpson said.
That apparently was enough to displace Haas, who followed a tie for 27th at the PGA championship (Simpson missed the cut) with a strong run through the final events of the season. He was second at the Wyndham Championship, T15 at the Barclays (Simpson missed the cut), T9 with Simpson at the Deutsche Bank Championship, T16 at the BMW Championship (Simpson was 53rd) and 16th in the 30-player Tour Championship (Simpson was T23).
At Gleneagles in this year's Ryder Cup, Simpson didn't match his 2-2 record from 2012 at Medinah. He and Bubba Watson were routed, 5 and 4, by Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson in the opening match of the Ryder Cup. He then sat out until splitting his Sunday singles match with Ian Poulter.

+ A Golf.com poll shows fans are unified behind Phil Mickelson in his row with captain Tom Watson over why America lost the biennial battle yet again.
The poll of 694 fans showed 80% siding with Mickelson, who publicly criticised Watson in the immediate aftermath of Europe's 16.5-11.5 win. Just 20% of fans supported Watson, the 65-year-old legend who was widely perceived as being out of touch with his players and overly brusque in his communications.
