ENGLISHMAN WINS THREE-WAY SHOOT-OUT IN GERMANY

WESSELINGH BEATS LANGER IN

PLAY-OFF AFTER STUNNING FINISH

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Englishman Paul Wesselingh claimed his first title of the season at the WINSTONgolf Senior Open, denying home favourite Bernhard Langer at the third hole of a play-off after producing a stunning finish to his final round.

The 2013 Order of Merit winner finished eagle-birdie for a seven under par 65 at WINSTONgolf in northern Germany to reach 15 under overall, which was matched by Phil Golding and Langer, who posted rounds of 66 and 69 respectively.
All three birdied the first hole of the play-off, then Golding was eliminated at the second when his approach found the water.

After heading back to the tee for a third time, Wesselingh conjured a majestic second shot which he tapped in for birdie, and was crowned champion when Langer could only manage a par.
Wesselingh, who did not drop a single shot in three rounds, said: “It’s an incredible feeling. I didn’t expect to get in a play-off because Bernhard had a chance to make eagle on the 17th and birdie on the 18th. I can’t remember the last time a play-off started with three birdies.”
Of his spectacular finish in regulation play, he added: “I holed my third shot from about 20 yards for eagle on the 17th, and it was great to finish with a birdie on the last.
“I missed a lot of putts in the first two rounds but today I putted well. The greens are really difficult to read – sometimes you look silly because the ball has rolled in a different direction from what you expected.
“The course is by far the best of the season and the greens are superb. It is a pleasure to play here.”
Langer was gracious in defeat, saying: “I had my chances to win the tournament, and the birdie putt on the 18th was so close. Paul played better at the right time, so he is the deserving winner.
“The tournament was great and I had a great time playing here in Germany. Hopefully I can have a strong finish to the season.”

2015 IRISH OPEN AT ROYAL Co DOWN

NEWS RELEASE

Rory McIlroy has significantly increased his commitment to the Irish Open with the announcement that his charitable foundation, The Rory Foundation, will become the official tournament host from next year.
The 2015 Irish Open Hosted by The Rory Foundation will be held from May 28-31 in McIlroy’s native Northern Ireland at Royal County Down Golf Club, Newcastle, a venue which is particularly close to the World Number One’s heart and one which witnessed his final appearance as an amateur, in the 2007 Walker Cup.
As the tournament host, McIlroy is committed to enhancing an already world-class field by recruiting fellow players from both The European and US PGA Tours, and the four-time Major Champion will also work closely alongside the Tour in developing the event’s commercial and sponsorship activities.

SAM PLAYS IT AGAIN - PIPS YOUNG

LAWRIE IN PLF JUNIOR OPEN

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
It was a case of deja vu at the Paul Lawrie Foundation Junior Open at Deeside today (Sunday).
Last year Sam Locke (Banchory) beat Michael Lawrie (Deeside) on a countback for first scratch prize.
And the same thing happened again today.
Sam, stepson of Paul's swing coach, Andrew Locke, and Michael, Paul's younger son, both shot one-over-par 71s. Sam had halves 36-35 and Michael 35-36 - so Locke triumphs again on the better inward half.
Sam had birdies at the ninth and 12th as well as a double bogey 6 at the 11th and a bogey at the fourth.
Michael had birdies at the fifth, sixth and 17th but bogeys at te seventh, 11th, 15th and 18th. That last late bogey made the difference between winning and losing for young Lawrie.
Brad Murray, who plays off six at Fraserburgh, had the best net score of 69.

And a big hand for Paul Lawrie himself for hot-footing it after the final round of the Wales Open at Celtic Manor back to Aberdeen in time for the picture at the top of the page, taken by PLF manager Michael MacDougall who organised Sunday's tournaments with Marian Lawrie.

JOOST RIGHT FOR DUTCHMAN:

 LUITEN WINS WALES OPEN

Dutchman Joost Luiten survived a nervy last hole to claim his fourth European Tour victory and first of the season at the ISPS Handa Wales Open presented by The Celtic Manor Resort.

The 28 year old had a one-shot lead heading down the par five 18th hole, but sprayed his drive way right and, after hacking out of thick rough back onto the fairway, left his approach 60 feet from the flag. A sublime first putt, however, gave him a tap-in for a level par 71, a 14 under par total and the €375,780 first prize.
England’s Tommy Fleetwood made a brilliant late charge, making four birdies and an eagle in the last five holes to take a share of second place one stroke back alongside Irishman Shane Lowry, who also birdied the last for a one under par 70.
Five players shared fourth place on 12 under, including home favourite Jamie Donaldson, who will make his Ryder Cup debut at Gleneagles next week, and Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts.

Key player quotes:

Joost Luiten
“It was hard work down the last. I didn't have the start I wanted today with two bogeys to start with. The two shot-lead I had was wiped out and I knew it was going to be a tough day. I just tried to hang in there and wait for my chances, and made some nice birdies at the end and a good par down the last, luckily enough. You learn a lot from winning your own tournament (last year’s KLM Open). The pressure there is a little bit different from when you play in another country, and that makes it seem easier when you play somewhere else and you are more in the shadow of other guys. So it was a very important experience.”
Tommy Fleetwood
“I wanted to get back to level par or under par for the day after the double bogey at 13. I knew I had been finishing strongly, so I knew I’d have some chances.  I wanted to get back to nine or ten under.  I thought that would have been a good effort. I wasn’t thinking about 13 under, that’s for sure.

"I love it being in contention. After a poor summer, it was important to finish the season well. I've been playing well recently and the more you get up there, the better. This is how you learn. You can't practise this on the range when you're coming down the stretch in the top five, and the more you do it, the better it is.”

Shane Lowry
“It's been a great week. I think with the golf I played today, I didn’t deserve the chance on the last to get into a play-off. But that's golf and overall it’s been a decent week and I’m happy with the way I’m playing.

"Joost hung in there well and made a great par on 17 and a great par on the last, so fair play to him. He's a worthy winner. I kept missing on the wrong side and not giving myself birdie chances. And when I did have a chance, I wasn’t holing putts.”

SAM HUTSBY SCORES FIRST WIN

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Golfing history tells us that a big lead entering the final round of a tournament is not always a guarantee of success, but 25-year-old Sam Hutsby from Lee-on-Solent, Hampshire made sure there were no slip-ups on the final day at Zhailjau Golf Resort, en route to claiming a two-stroke maiden Challenge Tour victory at the Kazakhstan Open.
Seven birdies were countered by just two dropped shots during a tight tussle with compatriot Andrew Johnston, but the Englishman’s closing 67 moved him to 19 under par, which was good enough to claim the €72,000 top prize.
His first European Challenge Tour title moves Hutsby to third in the Rankings, and has guaranteed him of a starting berth in The Race to Dubai next season, having not had his card since the end of 2010 when he missed out on retaining it by one place.
Behind the leading twosome Byeong-hun An continued an exemplary season on the second tier in 2014 as the South Korean carded a 69 playing in the penultimate group to finish alone in third.
He was a shot clear of the experienced pair of Sweden’s Jocke Rask – who posted an albatross on the par five ninth in the final round – and 2010 Kazakhstan Open winner Alvaro Velasco, who both finished in a tie for fourth at 11 under.
As for Hutsby, who will be 26 on October 29, it was the culmination of some fine form this season, and he could barely keep the smile off his face as he realised just what he had achieved on an energy-sapping day in Almaty.
“I thought if I came out today and shot five under then I’d have probably won it by some margin,” said the 25 year old, who only made his flight by a few minutes to spare last Sunday, having been stuck in traffic en route to Heathrow.

“A J put so much pressure on me though, which I thought was good, because it would have been a shame to see anyone struggle.
“No lead is ever big enough, especially with those last two holes and all the water, so one loose shot can rack up a big number. It was just an incredible back nine though, and I pulled off some really key shots, which surprised even myself.

"My short game really kept me in it today as I got up and down when I needed to and holed out pretty well, and we were both going at each other on the back nine, it was just relentless.
”Funnily enough I actually won my first ever professional event in the UK on the Jamega Tour playing with A J, and now my first Tour win. So I was really pleased when I saw the draw playing with him and George Murray, two of the most likeable guys on Tour.

"That definitely helped as I was able to have a laugh with them in between shots, which kept me relaxed.
“A J has had a fantastic year and he just showed his class today, as he’s had an awesome weekend. His play in the final two rounds just showed what a fantastic competitor he is, and on the 18th green he couldn’t compliment me enough, which was really nice of him.
“It has been the longest weekend of my life though. I slept alright last night, but woke up at about 5am and it was all I could think about, and I wished I was teeing off at half seven. It was a long day and all a very new experience for me, but I’m just really pleased with how I handled myself.
“It is just so nice to get over that barrier and win my first title, and now I can relax and I can’t wait to get back out on The European Tour next year. It still hasn’t sunk in yet, so I might need a moment to myself, but I’m chuffed to bits.”
Thanks to his runner-up finish Andrew Johnston, who carded an impressive 65 in the final round, now holds a commanding lead at the top of the Rankings having overtaken long-time leader Moritz Lampert.
This week was just the latest in a long run of strong form this year, which has seen the man affectionately referred to as Beef claim two titles at both the Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts as well as at Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge, and he now has his sights set firmly on retaining that number one spot on the season-long list.
“It was good this week, even though I started a bit slow, but I have just had such a good weekend,” said the man from London.

“I had to shoot a good score today and it all depended on how Sam played, but he was awesome today and I couldn’t get anywhere near him, not even close. Every time I made a birdie he countered and he was just too good.
“The goal is to finish top of the Rankings this year, so I just need to keep going and keep doing well, as I’ve worked really hard this year and it is paying off, so I just need to keep doing it.
“Sam was amazing today. I played with him on the second day when he shot nine under, but in many ways today was even better, he was awesome. That is one of the best rounds I’ve seen.”
On a good weekend for the English, Ben Evans shot a 69 on Sunday to finish in a tie for sixth at ten under par alongside Chile’s Mark Tullo, who carded the same score in the final round
.
Matthew Fitzpatrick continued to show his professional promise after a glittering amateur career, and his closing five under par 67 saw him record an eighth place finish, equalling his best on the Challenge Tour this year.
Cyril Bouniol (72) is getting married next Saturday, and he will tie the knot with a share of ninth under his belt in Kazakhstan. He finished eight better than par after four rounds alongside Italy's Matteo Delpodio (71), fellow Frenchman Edouard Espana (69), the English pair of Scott Fallon (68) and Callum Shinkwin, as well as Denmark's Lasse Jensen to round out the top ten in Central Asia.

CHAPCHAI WINS SELANGOR MASTERS

PLAY-OFF TO END LEAN SPELL

ASIAN TOUR NEWS RELEASE
Petaling Jaya, Selangor: Thailand’s Chapchai Nirat holed a four-foot par putt to beat Filipino veteran Antonio Lascuna in the first play-off hole at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters today.
Big-hitting Chapchai, who is nicknamed ‘King Kong’ by his friends, held his nerve at the Seri Selangor Golf Club to secure his fourth Asian Tour victory, ending a five-year title drought in the US $410,000) event.
The 43-year-old Lascuna charged into contention with a masterful 63 to tie Chapchai, who closed with a 68 which included two finishing bogeys, on 10-under-par 274. The Thai then sealed the win when Lascuna’s missed his par putt from five feet in extra time.
India’s Anirban Lahiri settled for third place, two behind the play-off duo, following a final round 68 while Order of Merit leader David Lipsky of the United States (71) and overnight leader Cameron Smith of Australia (73) were amongst those who shared fourth place on 278.
