GERMAN MAKING RARE APPEARANCE ON HOME TURF

LANGER'S BACK-TO-BACK 66s GIVE HIM

A SHARE OF THE LEAD

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
German golfing legend Bernhard Langer thrilled the home crowds with a sparkling six under par 66 in the second round of the WINSTONgolf Senior Open to take a share of the lead alongside English pair Gary Emerson and Wraith Grant.
It was Langer’s second consecutive 66 and gives the 57-year-old Florida-based player the chance to record a first win on home soil since 2001, when he won the Linde German Masters on The European Tour.
However, Emerson and Grant are men in form, posting rounds of 67 and 65 respectively at WINSTONgolf in northern Germany, while their compatriot Simon P Brown (66), South African Chris Williams (66) and Argentine Cesar Monasterio (68) are lurking one shot back on 11 under par.
Langer said: “I played a pretty solid round today. I made a smooth start and then got into gear. I had a few chances coming in, but the greens are really hard to read – they are fast with many slopes.
“It is always great playing at home, which doesn’t happen so often anymore. I have a pretty good record in Germany and it is really fun to play here and have great support from the spectators.

" The crowds this week are fantastic and I really appreciate so many people coming out to cheer me on.
“It would be terrific to win this tournament on Sunday, not only for me personally but also for the tournament.”
Grant said of his 65: “I can’t remember the last time I had ten birdies in one round. If it wasn’t for three mistakes, which cost me three bogeys, it would have been something special. Hopefully I can play the same way tomorrow but cut out the mistakes.”
Emerson said: “I've not played well the last few months, and I don’t really know what’s been the reason for my form this week, but I’ll take it. Everything has gone very well so far here and I’ll certainly be giving it my best shot tomorrow.“

FLYING DUTCHMAN LUITEN LEADS BY

TWO STROKES  AFTER A 65

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
A late birdie burst enabled Joost Luiten to open up a two-shot lead heading into the final round of the ISPS HANDA Wales Open.
The Flying Dutchman started and finished his third round of 65 in some style, notching three birdies in his first five holes and closing with another three in his final four holes to climb to 14 under par.
His nearest rival on 12 under par is Irishman Shane Lowry, who also got off to a strong start but was unable to add to his three birdies on the front nine.
Third place is shared between Frenchman Grégory Havret and Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee, who posted respective rounds of 66 and 67 to move to 11 under par, one shot ahead of Italian Edoardo Molinari.
Ryder Cup man Jamie Donaldson still has an outside chance of delivering a home victory after his round of 68 moved the Welshman to eight under par.
Key quotes
Joost Luiten
“I’m very happy, it’s a good score. I played solid, and hit a lot of greens. I had some nice putts to start with in the beginning, then didn’t really make a lot in the middle part, but came back strong at the end with three birdies on the last four.
“You just have to be patient on the greens here. You have to try to create chances on every hole and hope they will go in eventually, and luckily they did for me at the end.”
Shane Lowry
“I got off to a flyer, but after that nothing really happened for me. I made three good par saves, but I would have liked to make a couple more birdies. I probably should have – I didn’t really hole many putts out there today, except for the first few holes. But I’m right where I want to be for tomorrow, and I’m looking forward to it.”

ALPS TOUR EVENT IN FRANCE

JAMES WHITE SHOOTS A 66 (EVEN WITH

A DOUBLE BOGEY 7!) IN FRANCE

Fifer James White, pictured, shot a brilliant seven-under-par 66 - despite a double bogey 7 at the 17th - to banish fears he would miss the cut in the Alps Tour event in France, the Open International du Haut Poitou.
White, who had a 76 in the first round over the par-73 lay-out, shot to the turn in only 30 shots with six birdies. He dropped his first shot to par at the 10th but then added four more birdies before running up a 7 at the par-5 17th
White, from Lundin, starts the final round in joint 14th place, four shots behind the English leader, Matt Wallace (67-71 for eight-under 138).
The only other Scot in the field, John Henry (Clydebank and District), is sharing 18th place with two sub-par rounds, 71 and 72, for three-under 146.

FORTROSE AND ROSEMARKIE WIN

20-hole NORTHERN COUNTIES CUP FINAL

Fortrose and Rosemarkie beat Inverness at the 20th hole in the final of the Northern Counties Cup men's double club foursomes tournament at Tain Golf Club today.
Fortrose's Alan Cameron and his nephew Lewis Reid, the second couple,  were six ahead of Inverness's Bryan Fotheringham and David Joel after nine holes  but brought it back to four after 15.
At the same stage the F and R first pair, Mike MacDonald and Chris Gaittens, were three down to the Inverness first pair of John Forbes and David Sanderson ( the same first pair when Inverness won at Tain in 2008)
When still four down Fotheringham and Joel surprisingly offered 8 foot putts for halves on the 16th green and it backfired when Fotheringham bunkered his tee shot to the 17th green to go five down and the cup looked lost in normal time won.
However, Cameron went into the water hazard from the 18th tee.  Although Reid played from it out it still took them four to reach the green and give a hole back to finish four up after 18.
With the Fortrose first pair also finding rough from the final tee, Inverness's Forbes and Joel  also won this hole to level the game at +4 and -4.
Fotheringham and Joel had a chance to win the first extra hole but they missed the putt while Fortrose's second pair of Cameron and Reid then had a chance to win the match but they missed from three feet.
At the second extra hole, both the first pairs missed the green. MacDonald pitched stiff which left Inverness a tricky 6ft putt for a half, which they missed. giving Fortrose the edge.
After the Inverness second string of Fotheringham and Joel  missed the green Reid hit his second shot to 15 feet, setting up the overall victory for Fortrose and Rosemarkie.
In the morning semi-finals, Nairn Dunbar, conquerors of title favourites Newmachar, winners of the trophy three times out of the previous four years, were beaten by Inverness by two holes.
Fortrose beat Tain by four holes.
Fortrose and Rosemarkie  won the Northern Counties Cup in 2002 and again in 2006.
Cameron was in the Inverness team that won six years ago at Tain. He has now moved his home club handicap back to his home village and as such has to play for Fortrose.
Mike MacDonald is the  F and R club secretary and a key player in his club's last two N C C wins, 2002 at Tain  and 2006 at  Royal Aberdeen.
The third win for Fortrose within 12 years has capped a fine year for the club. Just a week or so ago MacDonald and his Match Secretary John Jack won the Belhaven Best Secretary and Captain's club team final at Crail.

HUTSBY AHEAD BY FIVE AS HE CHASES

FIRST CHALLENGE TOUR VICTORY

Sam Hutsby retained the five stroke advantage he began the day with at Zhailjau Golf Resort after a third round 71 kept him in pole position to pick up a first European Challenge Tour title at the Kazakhstan Open.

Starting out with such a commanding lead cannot always be the easiest thing to deal with, but during a round when the Englishman admitted to being nervous on the first tee he handled himself with aplomb, and will head into Sunday as the favourite to claim the €72,000 first prize at 14 under par.

There is plenty of talent stacked up behind the 25 year old though with two-time winner Andrew Johnston very handily placed after a 65 in the third round propelled him into a three way tie for second.

He is alongside Scotland’s George Murray and recent Rolex Trophy winner Byeong-hun An at nine under par, while Frenchman Cyril Bouniol is a shot further back in fifth spot.

As for Hutsby, it was a solid if not spectacular day on the Arnold Palmer design, with two birdies and a bogey proving enough for him to retain his sizeable advantage. It perhaps wasn’t exactly what he was looking for, but with none of those in close attendance making a move below, he is very happy with his position heading into the final 18 holes.

“I didn’t get off to a great start,” said the man at 17th on the Challenge Tour Rankings. “I didn’t hit a very good tee shot on the first, as I was quite nervous, but I managed to find a few greens after that and made a good up and down on the third. I holed a good putt there, and gave myself some chances after that, before a sloppy bogey on eight.

“It is probably the easiest hole on the course, but I hit my drive to the right and didn’t quite study the chip as hard as I should have done, so it rolled off the front and then I three putted from there. I missed a four footer on that green, which is never nice, and then I gave myself a good chance on the ninth and didn’t capitalise.

“After that I just tried to be more aggressive on the back nine, because I was a little tentative on the front, as I’ve not been in this position many times. I wasn’t sure if I should go out and attack and try and breakaway as being too aggressive might lead to bogeys, especially with the pins today, which were really tucked away on little slopes.

“I played really well though on the back nine and on the last three holes I had chances from ten to 15 feet on all of them, but just couldn’t make them as the greens were perhaps not as smooth as earlier in the day.

“I started with a five shot lead though, and that’s what I’ll have tomorrow, so it is a good position to be in, as it would have been a disastrous day if I had of gone backwards to the pack.

“I just wanted to keep the bogeys off the card, but it is hard to know when to attack or when to play safe. I learned a little from today though to take into tomorrow, and I didn’t feel like I played that great, but one bogey and a few birdies gives me plenty to be positive about going into the final round.”

Johnston could well be the danger man on Sunday after he carded a 65, the lowest score of anyone in the field on day three.

Much like Oliver Wilson a day prior, the man affectionately referred to as Beef started with an eagle two at the par four first, before consecutive dropped shots on the next two holes. They would be his only bogeys of the round however, with gains at the fourth and fifth followed by four consecutive red numbers from the eighth tee, and one final birdie at the 15th – all of which has him handily placed to pick up a third win of the season.

Korea’s An signed for the same score as his leading playing partner to be alongside Johnston in second, while Murray broke 70 for the second time this week to also give himself a shot at glory on Sunday.

After playing the second round with no nine iron, Bouniol carded a 66 with his full complement of clubs to give himself an outside chance at a maiden title some six shots adrift in fifth, while compatriot and first round leader, Adrien Bernadet, is part of a six way tie for sixth place at seven under par after a 72.

Alongside him are Matteo Delpodio (69), Ben Evans (68), Jocke Rask (69), Mark Tullo (66) and the 2010 Kazakhstan Open winner Alvaro Velasco (71).

After his course record equalling second round of 63, it was also a day of mixed fortunes for Oliver Wilson, who fell away on Saturday to a four over par 76 and a share of 22nd place.

AUSSIE ROOKIE CAMERON SMITH

EDGES AHEAD IN  SELANGOR MASTERS

Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia: Australian newcomer Cameron Smith snatched a one-shot lead from Thai duo Chapchai Nirat and Sattaya Supupramai after a bruising third round at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters today
Smith, the 2013 Australian amateur champion, battled to an even par 71 which included three bogeys over his closing four holes at a demanding Seri Selangor Golf Club to put himself in position for a maiden Asian Tour victory.
Big-hitting Chapchai, a three-time winner but not since 2009, shot a 69 while Sattaya moved into contention with a 68 which included six birdies and two dropped shots over his last three holes at the  US $410,000 event.
Current Order of Merit leader David Lipsky of the United States kept himself in the hunt for a second title in three weeks with a battling 69 which left him two back alongside Australian Jake Higginbottom and Chinese Taipei’s Hung Chien-yao.
An ailing overnight leader Anirban Lahiri of India struggled to a 76 which included two closing double bogeys and ended a tough day three shots behind Smith.
The 21-year-old Smith led into the final round of the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters in April before settling for tied second place behind Lahiri. The Aussie is determined to go one better at the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters.
“I’ve been in this position a couple of times now. Hopefully I can close the deal. I need to stay patient and stick to my game plan. With a bit of luck, hopefully I can win,” said Smith, who has a three-day aggregate of eight-under-par 205.
Two back at the start of the day, Smith looked menacing, holing a birdie on 11 and another 25-foot eagle on 13 to surge ahead of the pack. He three putted the 15th hole for bogey and errant shots on 16 and 18 led to further shots.

Blair maintains lead in suspended second round

CBSSports.com wire reports
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida -- Zac Blair topped the Web.com Tour Championship leaderboard at 13 under Friday when second-round play was suspended because of darkness.
Blair was 5 under with three holes left in the round that was delayed because of rain. On Thursday, the 24-year-old former BYU player shot a 63 to match the record on TPC Sawgrass' Dye's Valley Course.
''It's a little difficult not knowing when you're going to have to stop and come back,'' Blair said. ''You just have to take in stride and with it. Everyone this afternoon has to.''
After missing the cuts in the first three events in the Web.com Tour Finals, Blair needs to earn about $40,000 in the season finale to earn a PGA Tour card.
''I realized I needed a good week coming in,'' Blair said. ''I also realized that none of the projections matter until the end of Sunday.''
Blair eagled his first hole - holing a 10-foot putt on the par-5 10th - and birdied Nos. 18, 1 and 2. He'll resume play Saturday with an 8-foot birdie putt on No. 16.
''I've made some good putts the last couple of days,'' Blair said. ''I've been getting chances and capitalizing on them.''
Derek Fathauer was second at 9 under after a 66.
''The fairways tighten the further down you get,'' Fathauer said. ''You want to play this course from the fairway.''
Tommy Gainey broke the course record with a 62 to move into a tie for ninth at 5 under.
''I'm finally healthy,'' Gainey said. ''I've been battling tennis elbow for the last year and half. In the last month I've gotten healthy. My attitude is always to freewheel it. I'm always going after it.''
The four-event series is limited to the top 75 players from the Web.com Tour money list and Nos. 126-200 in the US PGA Tour's FedEx Cup standings.
The top 25 on the Web.com money list have earned US PGA Tour cards. They are competing against each other for PGA Tour priority, with regular-season earnings counting in their totals. The other players are fighting for another 25 cards based on their earnings in the series.

Tom Pernice Junior fires 12-under 60 in

Hawaii , ties Senior Tour birdies record

CBSSports.com wire reports

KAPOLEI, Hawaii -- Tom Pernice Jr. birdied his final four holes for a 12-under 60 and a four-stroke lead Friday in the Champions Tour's Hawaii Championship.
''That's awesome to shoot 12-under 60,'' Pernice said. ''I just want to have another good day tomorrow.''

Pernice finished a stroke off the tour record of 59 set by Kevin Sutherland last month in the Dick's Sporting Goods Open in Endicott, New York.
Davis Love III opened with a 69 in his Champions Tour debut. The 20-time US PGA Tour winner turned 50 in April.
Pernice played his final nine holes -- the front nine at Kapolei Golf Club -- in 7-under 29, also birdieing Nos. 1, 2 and 4. He had five birdies on his opening nine.
On the last four holes, he hit wedge to 6 feet on the par-4 sixth, a lob wedge to 10 feet on the par-5 seventh, chipped in from 25 feet on the par-3 eighth, and hit a lob wedge to a foot on the par-4 ninth.
''I hit the ball really good in the pro-am yesterday and hit good shots on the range this week and had good practice sessions,'' Pernice said. ''The greens are really good. I putted well today.''
The 55-year-old Pernice tied the tour record for birdies with 12. Walter Morgan set the mark in the 2002 AT&T Canada Senior Open, Fred Couples matched it at the 2011 AT&T Championship and Sutherland accomplished the feat in his 59.
A two-time winner on the US PGA Tour winner, Pernice won the Principal Charity Classic in June in Iowa for his third Champions Tour title.
Michael Allen was second after a 64. He's fighting a cold.
''I got sick Tuesday night. It's not fun,'' Allen said. ''I putted well and, basically with a cold, I played one shot at a time. I rolled the ball beautifully today.''
Joey Sindelar and Scott Dunlap shot 65, and Jay Haas, Vijay Singh, Paul Goydos, Jim Carter and Mike Goodes followed at 66.
Guy Boros and Skip Kendall also made their tour debuts. They shot 69.
Bernhard Langer, the tour leader with five victories, skipped the tournament to play in a European Senior Tour event in Germany.
Englishmen Roger Chapman and Barry Lane are T28 on 69.
Welshman Mark Mouland had a 71 to be T58.
Sandy Lyle is not playing in this event.
