EWEN FERGUSON POISED TO MAKE

CHALLENGE AT BALGOWNIE

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
There's never been a Scottish winner since the Duke of York Young Champions'  54-hole golf tournament started in 2001 - but Bearsden's Ewen Ferguson is poised to put an end to that over the next two days at Royal Aberdeen's classic Balgownie links.
Ferguson, British boys champion last year and winner of both the Scottish U18 boys' stroke and match-play titles, posted a one-over-par 70 in today's opening round in calm conditions.
He is one of four players sharing second place, breathing down the neck of leader Gisli Sveinbergsson from Iceland, who had a 69.
Murray Naysmith (Marriott Dalmahoy) is joint 15th on 74 while Calum Fyfe (Cawder) is sharing 22nd place.
There are no Scottish girls in the field. Ferguson could hardly have been steadier. He had 17 pars and one birdie, achieved at the par-3 17th.

"The course was there for the taking, I could have shot a really low score but I'm sure everyone was thinking that today," said Ferguson, who plays off plus three. "That said it's still a very tight course and if you hit it offline you will be punished."

"I stayed patient and didn't try to force anything. Thankfully a birdie eventually dropped at the 17th where I hit a five-iron into six feet and poured in the birdie putt."

Naysmith had an eventful afternoon. He played from the wrong tee on the fifth (the club's white tees instead of the tournament tees), which resulted in a two shot penalty and double bogey. The 17-year-old also ran up a triple-bogey seven at the 14th and his tee shot at the 18th found bushes on the right.
"Overall, I'm not too disappointed because I was one-under for 15 holes and just had three bad holes," said Naysmith. "I struck the ball really well; it was an eventful day and there is always tomorrow."

In all, nine players in the 54-player field managed to match par or better but Sveinbergsson's effort stood out as the only sub-70 round of the day.

PREVIEW OF THIS WEEK'S NORTHERN COUNTIES CUP FOURSOMES

NEWMACHAR THE TEAM TO BEAT

By ROBIN WILSON
Just three of the original eight golf clubs, Kirkwall's Orkney, Tain St. Duthus and Aberdeen Victoria, who in 1900 subscribed to the purchase of the Northern Counties Cup that introduced a club foursomes competition between all golf clubs stretching from Kincardine-shire to the northern islands of Orkney and Shetland, have yet to see their names engraved on the cup as winners.
Aberdeen Victoria are now defunct and Tain St. Duthus evolved into Tain Golf Club so next week could this be Tain's year to put matters right when on the six year rotation of hosting courses the 103rd double foursomes KO competition gets under way on Thursday over Tain's Tom Morris designed links course?
Cup specialists in recent years have been Newmachar who will arrive at the Ross-shire course as holders with the same four players who have won in three of the last four years, Chris Simpson, Mark McKechnie, John Duff and Richard Barr.

Attempting to reverse the recent trend of North East domination, Oldmeldrum won in 2012, will be eleven time winners, Inverness, who travel to Tain in the knowledge of one pairing in their team of four, John Forbes and David Sanderson , who helped Inverness lift the cup when the competition last visited Tain in 2008. Their new second pairing next week will be two of the most prominent winners of stroke play events this season Club champion Bryan Fotheringham and David Joel.
After receiving a first round bye the Inverness first team tackle Moray 2 in Thursday's second round while at the end of the draw an Inverness second selection led by the experienced Euan Forbes and Laurie Chancellor team up with Johnathon Keith and Keirnan Mackay to play a first game against the Cruden Bay first team.
The city's other two clubs, Torvean and Castle Heather have not entered but from near bye the two Nairn Golf Clubs, The Nairn and Nairn Dunbar are in the field as is Grantown on Spey.

FIRST-ROUND DRAW FOR THURSDAY
Meldrum House v Deeside
Nairn Dunbar 2 v Fraserburgh
Moray 1 v Duff House Royal
Forres v Royal Dornoch 2

SECOND ROUND (Thursday)

Grantown on Spey v Strathpeffer Spa
Royal Aberdeen 2 v Banchory

PAUL LAWRIE INVITATIONAL REPORT AND SCORES

GREG McBAIN SETS PACE WITH A 64

Aberdonian Greg McBain, bidding to become the first man to win the Paul Lawrie Invitational twice, made a superb start to this week's £40,000 54-hole event at Deeside Golf Club.
Early in the day, McBain, who plays out of the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, demonstrated the low-scoring possibilities on soft, holding greens with a six-under-par score of 64, which included eight birdies and bogeys only at the first and 18th.
"I played Deeside quite often in my junior golf days and I've always like the course," said 30-year-old former Newmachar GC member McBain.
"I've certainly got fond memories of this tournament, having won it in 2012. I'm delighted with the way I played today."
McBain birdied the long third and sixth and then chipped in for another birdied at the seventh before getting a 2 at the short eighth.
The flow of birdies continued on a misty but windless morning with gains at the 11th, short 12th, 15th and also at the 17th where he got up and down from a bunker for this eighth and last birdie.
McBain posted his score at lunchtime and five hours later, at the end of play for the day, he was still on his own in the pole position.
Englishman Jonathan Lomas, the former European Tour Rookie of the Year who is now attached to the Ayr Caprington Club, got the closest with a late in the day 66, which included an eagle at the third and birdies at the ninth, short 14th and 18th.
Lomas recently won a Tartan Tour pro-am for the first time.
Gavin Hay, 23-year-old Scottish Young Professional of the Year from the Nairn Dunbar GC pro staff, fills third place overnight with a 67.
despite losing a ball at the eighth in the light rough.
"Quite bizarre, really," said Gavin. "I thought I would walk straight to it. Never crossed my mind, we would not find it. But we didn't."
So that misfortune cost him a double bogey 6 but he wiped that out with birdies at the third, fourth, ninth, 11th, 13th, 15th and 17th - seven in all.
His single bogeys came at the second and 16th.
Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) had the best outwad half of 31 with birdies at the firfst, fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth after opening with a bogey at the short first hole.
But Fox's flame died down after the turn. He ran up a double bogey 6 at the 11th and also dropped shots at the 15th and 18th for a par-matching 70.
Scottish PGA champion Gareth Wright had an uncharacteristic round of five-over 75 which means he must tighten up if he is to avoid the cut to the leading 30 and ties after the second round.
The West Linton-based Welshman had only one birdie, at the third, and he double bogeyed the short 14th as well as shedding shots at the first, second, 10th and 16th.
In all, 14 players had scores of one-under-par 69 or less. Five of them are on 68 and six on 69 so, as David Huish used to say: "This tournament is not over yet."
For those not in the leading 30 and ties at the end of the second round it will be. That's the cut mark to play Thursday's third and final round.
