DAVID LAW WINS NE ALLIANCE AT KEMNAY WITH A 69

Challenge Tour player David Law, pictured above, returned to the North-east Golfers' Alliance scene at Kemnay today - and won the £140 top scratch prize with a round of two-under-par 69.
Law birdied the long eighth, the long 11th, 13th and long 15th. He bogeyed the second and fifth.
"Kemnay is one of my favourite courses in the North-east and to play it on a day like it was today and in the condition it was made it a pleasure to play." said David later.

He won by a shot from Paul Lawrie Golf Centre stablemate, young rookie Sam Kiloh from Portlethen. Kiloh's form has been picking up lately and he earned the £110 second place prize on a card-countback with Royal Aberdeen amateur Nick Macandrew who also went round in 70.
Macandrew won an £80 prize voucher.
A reminder that players must key in their scores to the laptop provided after their rounds.
Kevin Duncan had a 71 and playing partner Murray Paterson a 78 but they left their scorecards beside the laptop, not realising that the keying in of the details of the scores to the laptop was essential to have their scores registered.
David Law and some of the other professionals who play in North-east Alliance competitions will miss next week's Stonehaven Alliance fixture because of the Paul Lawrie Invitational at Deeside on Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday.

ONLY LEADING 17 AND TIES WILL QUALIFY FOR STAGE 2 IN SPAIN

FENWICK TAKES TWO-SHOT LEAD AT

Q SCHOOL STAGE 1 AT KELSO

Dunbar's Neil Fenwick has taken a two-shot lead at the halfway stage of the European Tour Qualifying School Stage 1 event at the Roxburghe course, Kelso.
Fenwick shot a second-round 66 for 10-under-par 134 and is two clear of American Brett Melton (69-67) and South African Thriston Lawrence (69-67).
Overnight leader Lloyd Saltman sagged from a brilliant opening 64 to a pedestrian 73 for 137 and is lying fifth.
Only the top 17 and ties after 72 holes will go on to Stage 2 in Spain, which means that James Byrne for one is in danger of being eliminated at the first hurdle in his bid to make it to the European Tour.
Byrne has shot 71 and 78 for 149 about eight strokes above the qualifying limit at the moment..

GREIG HUTCHEON SCORES 12th WIN OF SEASON AT TURRIFF

HUTCH EXTENDS REMARKABLE RUN

Greig Hutcheon chalked up his 12th win on the Tartan Tour this season by two two shots with a five-under-par round of 65 at the Turriff Golf Club pro-am today (Wednesday).
The Paul Lawrie Golf Centre man  has had a remarkable run of three wins in a row - Elgin, Drumpellier and now Turriff - and seven successes in his last 10 competitions.
Hutch is well nigh unbeatable in his native North-east, as he proved again her with birdies at the second, third, fifth, sixth and eighth in a dazzling 31 to the turn.
A sixth birdie at the 12th was his last of the day and after a string of pars he missed a short putt to bogey the 18th.
Mark Kerr (Marriott Dalmahoy) and Chris Kelly (unattadhed) were joint runners-up on 67 and each earned £670.
Hutcheon also led the "Celebration of Turriff" 2 team of Barrie Evans (handicap 18), Glen Jaex (8) and Malcolm McAulsin (16) to victory with a net total of 14-under-par 126 in the pro-am team event.
Hutch's bonus for this win boosted his earnings for the day to £1,073.

ALASTAIR WEBSTER WINS SCOTTISH SENIOR PROFESSIONALS' TITLE

Tournament Director Nicola Melville presents Alastair Webster with the winner's cheque at Dalmahoy.

THE WONDER OF WEBSTER -- EIGHT
BIRDIES ON HIS WAY TO A 66

Edzell's Alastair Webster produced a stunning second round of seven-under-par 66 over the Marriott Dalmahoy East Course, Edinburgh to win the title and the £800 first prize in the Scotland senior professionals' stroke-play championship today (Wednesday)
Webster had started the day two behind overnight leader Fraser Mann but had caught the Carnoustie player with his first two birdies at the second and the fourth while Mann bogeyed the third.
Mann came on to his game with birdies at the fifth, ninth, 10th and 11th but let it slip again with bogeys at the 13th and 18th for a 72 and a total of 136.
Webster's birdie hunt was relentless. After his early gains he birdied the seventh, ninth, 10th, 12th and 14th, bogeyed the 16th, but finished with a birdie at the 18th for a 66 and a nine-under-par aggregate of 132.
Mann finished third behind runner-up Stephen Craig (Craig Golf) who had five birdies on the outward half - the first, second, fourth, sixth and ninth but, allowed Webster to go clear when he bogeyed the 14th and 15th.
Craig's sixth birdie, at the 18th, for a 69 saw him fill second place, three behind Webster and one ahead of Mann to collect the £650 runner-up prize. Mann's reward was £550.

ENGLISHMAN AHEAD IN ASIAN DEVELOPMENT TOUR EVENT

GRANT JACKSON  LEADS WITH A

 66 AT SARAWAK
NEWS RELEASE
Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia: England’s Grant Jackson regained some of his best form to seize the first-round lead with a six-under-par 66 at the PGM MNRB Sarawak Championship today.
The 32-year-old Jackson birdied four of his closing five holes at the Sarawak Golf Club to edge ahead by one shot from Thailand’s Tirawat Kaewsiribandit, who was equally impressive with a round that included six birdies and one bogey in the RM250,000 (approximately US$80,000) Asian Development Tour event.
Shaaban Hussin struck a 68 to emerge as the leading Malaysian performer to lie alongside Australia’s Michael Moore, England’s Shaun Malone and Pasamet Pogamnerd of Thailand, two off the lead.
Jackson, who finished fifth on the ADT Order of Merit after winning once last season, was delighted with his effort especially when he has just recovered from an illness.
“I played nice and solid. On my front nine, which is the back nine of the course, I left a few putts out there but coming in, I read the lines better and started to make some putts. I just stayed patient and started holing putts,” said Jackson.
“Conditions were great on the course ... it is as good as it has been this year. Some of the pins were tricky and I left a few above the hole and had some downhill putts to deal with. Hopefully I’ll continue to play good over the next few days.”
Currently 13th on the Order of Merit, Jackson is determined to play his way into the top-five to earn an Asian Tour card for next season.
His hopes took a knock in the Philippines several weeks ago when he fell ill and he then missed the halfway cut in Sabah last week.
“I’ve dropped down rankings after being ill over the last couple of weeks. I had some kind of virus when I was in the Philippines and couldn’t eat for four days there and I still tried to play which wasn’t the right thing to do. When I got back to Thailand, I was put on drip for two days in a hospital but I’m starting to feel better now.
“I’m hoping to shoot some reasonable scores and get back up on the rankings. We’ve got a long way to go in the season,” said Jackson.
Shaaban, who enjoyed two recent top-10s on the ADT, thanked his putter for putting him in contention for a first ADT victory.
“I hit the ball well and putted really good. I missed a few greens but managed to get up and down on several occasions to save par. I’m satisfied with the score. I hope to keep it going as the greens here are tricky,” said Shaaban.
“The golf course was playing difficult because there was a bit of a breeze but I managed to keep the ball in play and the putter helped me out when I missed some shots.”
Singapore’s Koh Deng Shan, Malaysia’s Khor Kheng Hwai, Thailand’s Pavit Tangkamolprasert, currently ranked third on the Order of Merit, and Ireland’s Niall Turner are amongst those who carded 69s to stay within touching distance of Jackson.
Second-ranked Brett Munson of the United States, the highest ranked player in the field this week, carded a 72.

NEIL IS SCOTTISH AMATEUR GOLFER OF YEAR, ORDER OF MERIT WINNER

BRADLEY NEIL: More honours in a fabulous season for the Blairgowrie player.
Picture by Cal Carson Golf Agency

NEWS RELEASE FROM SGU
By ED HODGE

British amateur champion Bradley Neil has further highlighted his impressive season after being named Scottish Amateur Golfer of the Year and the Scottish Golf Union Men’s Order of Merit winner.
Ahead of representing Scotland in this week’s World Amateur Team Championship in Japan, Neil is the first player since Tulliallan’s Callum Macaulay in 2007 to do the ‘double’.
Thanks to finishing as the leading Scot on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) at last Friday’s cut-off point – helped by becoming the first Scot in 10 years to win the British amateur championship at Royal Portrush in June – Neil has secured the Amateur Golfer of the Year accolade.
Neil had no shortage of rivals to fend off for the title with six Scots populating the top 100 on the WAGR during strong seasons in 2014.
The 18-year-old from Blairgowrie is 6th on the WAGR, edging out Craigielaw’s Grant Forrest (18th WAGR), who beat Neil in a play-off to win the St Andrews Links Trophy in June.
Cawder’s Jamie Savage, who ended Scotland’s five-year drought in premier GB and I 72-hole stroke play events by winning in Ireland in May, came third in the rankings, with Fairstone Scottish Amateur champion Chris Robb (Meldrum House) fourth. Kilmarnock Barassie’s Jack McDonald, the 2013 Order of Merit champion, and James Ross of Royal Burgess, last year’s Scottish Amateur Golfer of the Year, were fifth and sixth respectively.
Perthshire player Neil joins a Scottish Amateur Golfer of the Year roll on honour that features the likes of Andrew Coltart, Dean Robertson, Steven O’Hara, Richie Ramsay, James Byrne, Michael Stewart and Macaulay.

Neil also came out on top in the SGU Men’s Order of Merit, helped hugely by his Royal Portrush success which earned him 250 points. Having posted seven top-10 finishes already in 2014, Neil defeated South African Zander Lombard 2 and 1 in the British amateur championship final. The former Scottish Boys champion also won the key play-off for Scotland’s European Nations Cup success in March, helped Great Britain and Ireland win the St Andrews Trophy and will represent Europe in the Junior Ryder Cup side over his home course later this month.
Robb finished runner-up in the merit rankings, with Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm), McDonald’s Adam Dunton and Connor Syme of Drumoig third, fourth and fifth respectively. European Tour winner Scott Jamieson is among the former winners of the Merit title.
“It’s a great achievement for me,” said Neil of the double success. “I would have been delighted to win one of them, but winning both tops off my season really well, even though we have more to play for in Japan this week ahead of the Junior Ryder Cup.
“The Amateur win obviously helped me on the merit table and the WAGR. Building up to The Amateur I had lot of good stroke play performances, like in the Lytham Trophy and at the St Andrews Links.
“I was just behind Grant in the rankings and when I won it took me ahead of him, so it was great to stay there.
“We’ve had six Scots in the top 100 (of the WAGR) this year, which is certainly different to last year. We’ve shown as a group that we’ve made a step up and made big improvements at British and European level. We’ve driven each other on this season.”
Neil, Forrest and Robb are now fully focused on this week’s World Amateur Team Championship in Japan, bidding to emulate the historic Eisenhower Trophy success of their countrymen in 2008.
Staged in the city of Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture from today (Wednesday) until Saturday, the biennial 72-hole stroke-play event is one of the most prestigious in amateur golf.
Six years ago in Australia, Scotland were on top of the world after brilliantly claiming a first-ever world title victory thanks to the endeavours of Wallace Booth, Gavin Dear and Macaulay as George Crawford captained his side to an emphatic nine-stroke victory over a USA field featuring Rickie Fowler and Billy Horschel.
“Hopefully we can play well this week and contend at the Eisenhower,” added Neil. “We know we can put in a good performance and all three of us, individually, are good players. It’s a question of performing as a team this week.”

BARRIE EDMOND WINS NE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS SCRATCH

ABOYNE'S ANDREW McLEOD TAKES

HANDICAP TITLE

By ALAN BROWN
Evening Express Sports Editor
BARRIE Edmond has been crowned this year’s Evening Express Champion of Champions scratch winner.
Bon Accord member Barrie defeated two-time holder Bryan Innes 2 and 1 at Murcar Links.
Barrie said: “Winning the Champion of Champions has capped off a terrific year for me.
“It is a tournament I have always wanted to win because I want to have my name on all the North-east’s prestigious trophies before my golfing days are over.
“I had a few first timers this season after winning the Brangan Cup at Duff House Royal and both the Murcar Links and Newmachar 36-hole Opens.”
With the match standing all square on the tee of the 172-yard  16th, the pivotal moment came seconds later.
Bryan, who had just squared the match with a winning par four at the previous hole, fired his down-wind seven iron through the green and was left with a tricky up and down for par.
Barrie did similar but was left a slightly easier return.
Bryan said: “The trouble was the ball was lying too good.
“I would not have taken my tee-shot back. It just took  a hard bounce and shot through.”
Bryan’s chip landed sharply at the edge of the green leaving him a 12ft putt for par while Barrie played up to four feet.
Bryan missed but Barrie holed to take a crucial one-hole advantage to the 17th tee.
Both players fired terrific approaches to the penultimate green.
Bryan played first to eight feet right of the cup while Barrie flew his ball 15ft past the pin.
In a typical match-play scenario, Barrie holed before Bryan narrowly missed and former Links champion Barrie was the champion.
Aboyne retained the handicap trophy, after Andrew McLeod defeated Ballater’s Francis Anderson 3 and 1.
Andrew said: “This is the biggest win in my golf career.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the tournament, meeting other players and playing other courses.”
The handicap final was level until the 15th where Andrew took a one-hole advantage.
After Francis’ tee-shot found gorse, Andrew doubled his lead and he sealed victory at the 17th after Francis conceded.
The  Champion of Champions was open to the 2013 scratch and handicap champions of all clubs affiliated to the North-east District.
Both sections were again sponsored this year by
the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre.

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY Carnoustie Countr
On their fifth day of highly-competitive golf on five of Carnoustie Country’s finest inland courses, the 60 competitors in the Scottish Golf Pairs Challenge 2014 played their final round at Strathmore Golf Centre, near Alyth. After 18 testing holes of golf, defending champions Allyn Dick from Kingsknowe Golf Club and Gregor Suttie from Shotts Golf Club were named Scratch winners of the Scottish Golf Pairs Challenge 2014.
“This is the second year we’ve competed in this tournament and, once again, we’ve met some brilliant people and had a great time,” said Allyn, who, with Gregor, defended the title over the Carnoustie Country courses at Kirriemuir, Alyth, Strathmore, Glenisla and Blairgowrie Rosemount, host venue for the 2014 Junior Ryder Cup. “We’re already looking forward to defending our title at the Scottish Golf Pairs Challenge 2015!”
Colin Lynes from Bush Hill Park Golf Club, North London and Tony Waller from Beauport Park Golf Club near Hastings won the handicap trophy. “The 11-hour drive up to this part of Scotland was well worth it,” laughed Tony, as Colin revealed that they’ve already booked their place at next year’s tournament.
Alistair Gibb, chair of the committee which organises the annual Scottish Golf Pairs Challenge and the equally successful Scottish Mixed Foursomes Tournament, explained that the week had been a great success for the five golf clubs involved, for competitors and for local businesses. “Over the five years this tournament’s been held, numbers have been steadily increasing,” said Alistair. “This year, we had a mixture of golfers who have taken part in every tournament, golfers coming along for a second or third time and new competitors who we hope will follow suit and return next year.
“Almost all of the competitors are from outwith the local area and stay in nearby accommodation, eat out in the many excellent hotels, restaurants, and bistros in the vicinity of the participating golf courses, and frequently add a few days to either side of the competition so they can further explore the Angus and Perthshire area. Highly successful events like this are very good news for the local economy.”
Bill and Liz Charlton from Cambridgeshire meet up with their friends Lynne and Peter Hull at the Scottish Golf Pairs Championships.
“Bill and Peter play in the tournament while Lynne and myself have a couple of rounds of golf and spend the rest of the time shopping and sightseeing,” said Liz. “There’s so much to see and do here and everyone is so welcoming.”
The five courses which host the Scottish Golf Pairs Challenge are all in Carnoustie Country, an Angus Council initiative which works with the golf industry in Angus, East Perthshire and North Fife to promote golf as a visitor activity at the 30 golf courses within a 40-minute drive of Carnoustie Championship.
“As we prepare to celebrate the past, present and future of golf at the annual Carnoustie Country Festival of Golf, which is from 4-12 October 2014, this tournament highlights why golfers enjoy playing golf in Carnoustie Country,” said Jane Taylor, Carnoustie Country’s marketing officer.
“Fantastic courses, great value golf and accommodation, first class hospitality and, of course, the chance to experience over 450 years of golfing heritage and history.”
