RUSSIAN SENIORS OPEN REPORT AND SCORES

TEXAN TIME LEADS BY 2 FROM MONTY

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Tim Thelen carded a superb seven-under-par 65 to claim a two-shot lead over Colin Montgomerie and Miguel Angel Martin after the second round of the Russian Open Golf Championship (Senior) at Moscow Country Club today.
The American started the day five shots adrift, but raced to the turn in only 32 shots, before adding three further birdies on the inward nine to finish on nine under par overall.
On a day of exceptional scoring. Canada’s Rick Gibson and England’s Barry Lane both matched Thelen’s 65 to move into a share of fourth place, with Andrew Oldcorn and overnight leader Marc Farry also on six under par going into the final day.
Thelen arrived in Russia fresh from a tie for second place at last week’s Travis Perkins Masters and opened with a two under par 70 on Russia’s oldest course, before moving to the top of the leaderboard with an impressive round that included eight birdies and just one dropped shot, where he three-putted from the back of the green on the par five fourth.
The Texan got his round off to the perfect start with three consecutive birdies – a feat he repeated on the 15th, 16th and 17th before getting up-and-down from a greenside bunker to save his par on the last.
“I have been hitting the ball well for a couple of weeks, but today was the first time I felt I holed my fair share of putts,” Thelen said.

“I started off like a train and I think that settled me down. I hit a lot of good irons into the greens and holed the five to six footers that make the difference between a good round and a mediocre one.
“I’m looking forward to tomorrow. There are a lot of people near the top of leaderboard so I’m going to have to play well, but I plan to have some fun, whatever happens out there.”
Montgomerie will be out in the final group for the last round alongside Thelen, after an eight-iron to the 18th set up his sixth birdie of the day.
The former Ryder Cup captain was one over par for the day after three-putting the par five fifth, but promptly carded six 3s over his next seven holes, to give himself a great chance of winning his fourth European Senior Tour title of the season.
“That putt at the last was important because it got me into the last group and that’s where I like to be heading into the final round,” said the double Senior Major Champion.
“I drove the ball exceptionally well but my irons weren’t quite as good. I’m going to have to improve a bit tomorrow because I think I might have to get to about 12 under to stand any chance of getting another win.”
Spain’s Martin will make-up the final three ball after firing a two under par 70, which included four birdies in seven holes from the ninth, but was marred by a bogey five at the last where he found a greenside bunker with his second shot.
“I played well in practice when I got here this week and I’ve been hitting it great ever since,” said Martin. “I hit 17 greens in regulation yesterday and the only ones I missed today were the fifth and the 18th.
“Any time you hit 33 greens over 36 holes you know you’re playing well.”
Lane shot a 65, with his wife helping the Englishman improve his putting on day two.
“My wife Camilla gave me a putting lesson last night,” said Lane. “And it seemed to work because I think I had only about 27 or 28 putts. We agreed I should grip the putter with my hands a little bit further apart and it worked a treat.”
With such a packed leaderboard full of talent and in-form players, the final day in Moscow looks set to be an interesting one.

McARTHUR'S 63 PUTS HIM INTO SHARE

OF TOP SPOT IN
BRITTANY

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
The Challenge Tour's Open Blue Green Cotes d`Armor Bretagne is set for a fittingly thrilling finale with four men tied at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final round

Overnight leader Ross McGowan’s third round of level par 70 enabled what was at times a rabid chasing pack get their teeth into the Englishman’s lead, with Alessandro Tadini, Andrew McArthur (pictured above) and then Benjamin Hebert moving into a share of top spot on 11 under.
Tadini and McArthur produced the performances of the day, with respective scores of 62 and 63.

seeing them charge to the top before Hebert’s 67 delighted the home crowd by adding the French tricolore to the flags of Italy, Scotland and England at the leaderboard’s summit.
McGowan – who turned in level par – birdied the tenth to give his third round a vital injection of adrenaline but a treble bogey seven on the par four 12th hole saw the Englishman slump down the leaderboard before three birdies and a bogey in his closing three holes saw him rise again.
“It was a good recovery after the treble on the 12th,” said McGowan. “I knew that a few of the guys were really coming at me and when I saw Alessandro and Andrew finish their rounds on 11 under I just wanted to try and get back onto the lead.
“I did that by birdieing 15, 16 and 17 but then unfortunately I bogeyed the last so I couldn’t keep my lead. But I am happy enough with how I recovered and I still have a great chance tomorrow.”
McGowan will play the final round in the company of Michael Lorenzo-Vera (-10) and Pedro Figueiredo (-9) and he is looking forward to the company of his old friend Lorenzo-Vera with whom he has shared many a tussle over the years.

“I played with Michael in the final round when I won the Madrid Masters on The European Tour in 2009 so hopefully he can bring me a bit of luck again,” smiled McGowan.
Lorenzo-Vera and Hebert will carry the hopes of the home crowd on their shoulders going into the final round at the beautiful Golf Blue Green de Pléneuf Val André.
Hebert, currently seventh in the Challenge Tour Rankings, is hoping victory on Sunday afternoon will mean one thing – he has secured a return to The European Tour
“If I can win tomorrow then I think my card for The European Tour would be secure for next year and that is a great incentive for me,” said Hebert. “I am in a great position to do it tomorrow and the game is in good shape just now so hopefully I can have another good round and win again.

Tadini and McArthur had similarly strong putting performances to leapfrog their way into contention.
Tadini, who is 32nd in the Challenge Tour Rankings, said: “The big difference today for me was putting. It is so important to putt well at this level, especially on the Challenge Tour, and after the first two rounds I had not putted great here. But today I was holing a lot of putts from between 6-15 feet and that made such a big difference to the card."
McArthur, currently 38th in the Rankings, added: “That was more like it – it’s amazing what holing a few putts can do for your position on the leaderboard. It wasn’t a brilliant performance from tee to green today but the putter was behaving itself

“I holed a lot of those six-eight foot putts either for pars or birdies and just really kept the momentum going that way which is great for the confidence. I have put myself in a good position for tomorrow but there are a lot of good players up there.
“It would be pretty big if I could get another win because we are getting to the stage of the season where you want to be moving up the Rankings quickly and getting as much money on the board as possible because anything can happen in the last few tournaments where there is big money on offer.

RICHIE RAMSAY SLIPS DOWN TO JOINT FIFTH PLACE

HOLE IN ONE HELPS GRAEME STORM

INTO LEAD IN EUROPEAN MASTERS

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
A hole in one by Graeme Storm started a surge that made him the front-runner on 16 under par after the third round of the Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre in Switzerland today.
Storm, whose ace came on the 217yd par three 11th, looked set for a share of the overnight lead until Brooks Koepka double bogeyed the last to drop back to 14 under par.
Tommy Fleetwood, whose 63 is his best European Tour round, sits in second place on 15 under in Switzerland.
However, the day belonged to Storm, ranked 159th in The Race to Dubai, who shot his second 64 of the week.
At the 11th Storm’s tee shot pitched just off the green, before taking three bounces into the middle of the cup. The masterstroke, which Storm celebrated jubilantly with playing partner and close friend Shane Lowry, earned the Englishman a BMW i8 sports car worth approximately €144,000.
Before then Storm, whose sole European Tour triumph was in 2007 at the Open de France ALSTOM, had made four birdies and two bogeys in his round. He then registered three gains and a one drop, but his par at the last proved particularly valuable when Koepka slipped up.

Key quotes:

Graeme Storm

"It was an incredible feeling. I had a hole in one earlier in the season in Morocco and won a lamp, so I think this prize just about tops that one. To win a car is absolutely magnificent, especially as I had to sell mine because we couldn’t afford to have two cars any more.

"I got a member’s bounce off the bank, but I’ve been here a few times so I’ve probably just about earned it. I saw James Heath do it in Germany earlier in the year, and I was pretty envious when he won the car so it’s nice to get one of my own.
"It was a decent shot, I’m not going to lie and say I was aiming straight for the flag, because it’s a difficult enough green to hit, let alone put it close. But I struck it well and Shane [Lowry] shouted “get in” when the ball was in flight.

"I didn’t want to jinx it so didn’t say anything myself, but it seems the luck of the Irish may have rubbed off on me. I think he was even more excited than I was! We’re good friends, so it was good to share the moment with him."

Tommy Fleetwood
"My game has been good for the past few weeks. I’ve been hitting it really well on the range this week, but that doesn’t guarantee that you’re going to take it out onto the course with you. But my iron play today was really, really good – I can’t really remember a single shot which wasn’t on line. I got on a roll with the putter as well, so everything came together nicely.
"There was a fantastic atmosphere out there today and it was a real pleasure to play golf, so it should hopefully be even better tomorrow. It’s a great tournament and it’s always been one of my favourites of the year, so to go out in the last group is going to be very, very exciting."

Overnight leader Richie Ramsay's par 70 for 198 knocked him down to a share of fifth place alongside Jamie Dohaldson.

SEVEN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES WANT

TO HOST 2022 RYDER CUP

FROM SKYSPORTS.COM

Seven countries across Europe have declared their interest in hosting the Ryder Cup in 2022.
Tournament organisers set a deadline of August 31 for golfing authorities to advise them of their intention to submit an official bid.
Ryder Cup director Richard Hills announced that notifications have been received from Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Turkey.
Hills said: "We are absolutely delighted at the level of interest we have received from across Europe in respect of hosting the 2022 Ryder Cup and we welcome each and every one of the seven letters of intent, each received through the respective national golf association, in accordance with bidding regulations."The implementation of this kind of formal bidding process for the 2018 Ryder Cup marked a new era for us all at Ryder Cup Europe, and this take up for 2022 shows that the introduction of a fair, transparent and objective methodology has been welcomed across the Continent.
"Not only that, we feel it is a process which befits a sporting event of the stature of the Ryder Cup and, as we have consistently stated, the key criteria in place will enable us to evaluate each bid equally on both its sporting and commercial merits while, at the same time, allowing us to judge each bid fairly, thoroughly and on a level playing field."
The seven nations will now be provided with an information pack before they are visited by Ryder Cup Europe officials for a series of meetings and inspections later this year.
Official bids need to be submitted by February 16 next year, and Ryder Cup Europe will announce the host nation and venue in the autumn.
The 2016 Ryder Cup will be staged at Hazeltine Golf Club in Minnesota, with the 2018 edition held at Le Golf National in Paris and Whistling Straits in Wisconsin the venue in 2020.

FATHAUER CLICKETY-CLICKS AGAIN

TO LEAD CHIQUITA CLASSIC

DAVIDSON, North Carolina -- Derek Fathauer shot his second straight 6-under 66 on Friday to take the second-round lead in the Chiquita Classic, the second of four events in the Web.com Tour Finals.
Fathauer, 12th on the Web.com Tour's regular-season money list to secure a 2014-15 US PGA Tour card, rebounded from a bogey with seven birdies in an eight-hole stretch from No. 17 to No. 6 at River Run.

''I just kind of shook it off and went on a little run from there,'' Fathauer said. ''I'm just trying to go out there and play every hole the way I drew it up in the practice round. I know there are birdies out there.''
The top 25 players on the Web.com money list are competing against each other for PGA Tour priority, with regular-season earnings counting in their totals and the final leader getting a spot in The Players Championship.
The other players -- Nos. 26-75 from the Web.com Tour money list and Nos. 126-200 in the US PGA Tour's FedEx Cup standings -- are fighting for another 25 cards based on their earnings in the four tournaments.
Greg Chalmers, Brett Stegmaier and Scott Pinckney were tied for second at 10 under. Chalmers shot 65, Stegmaier 66, and Pinckney 68. Chalmers, from Australia, was 132nd in the FedEx Cup.
''I push a little harder on the weekend trying to make things happen,'' Chalmers said. ''I need to control that tomorrow.''
Pinckney was 39th on the Web.com money list, and Stegmaier 41st.
''My ball-striking has been great,'' Pinckney said. ''I've been giving myself opportunities and capitalizing by making a couple of good putts.''
Adam Hadwin, the first-round leader after a course-record 63, had a 72 to drop into a tie for fifth

SERGIO GARCIA SHOOTS A 64 TO TAKE

ONE-SHOT LEAD IN DENVER

FROM SKYSPORTS.COM
Sergio Garcia fired a six-under-par 64 to take a one-shot lead after the second round of the BMW Championship in Denver.
The Spaniard is on eight-under 132 heading into the weekend at Cherry Hills Village, with American Ryan Palmer leading the chasing pack after also shooting a 64.
Both men will be looking over their shoulder, though, after world No 1 Rory McIlroy finished with three birdies in his last four holes to sit on six under alongside Billy Horschel.
The top 30 in the FedEx Cup rankings after this weekend will go to Atlanta next week where the points will be reset so every player has a chance of claiming the $10million US dollar bonus.
Garcia provisionally sits second in the FedEx Cup rankings despite sitting out last week's Deutsche Bank Championship and feels his form is coming together at just the right time ahead of the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.
"I think the important thing is for me to keep feeling better," he told Sky Sports 4. "(US) PGA and Barclays I didn't feel great - the way I played.
"This week, I've hit some good shots but I've hit some that I don't like to hit so I want to kind of build up on this bit of momentum, hopefully throughout the weekend, and make sure that I'm where I need to be for the Ryder Cup.
"That's the important thing for me."
The Spaniard birdied the second but his round came to life on seven when, after leaving his drive in the rough just short of a bunker, he holed his 126-yard approach for eagle.
"I was just in the first cut, downwind, 116 metres to the hole and I hit a hard lob wedge that flew a little bit but came up perfect," he said.
A bogey followed on eight but birdies on 11, 13, 16 and the last - courtesy of a breaking 12-foot putt - saw him come home in 32.
Palmer remarkably also eagled the seventh, holing his second shot from 46 yards after birdies on one and three and a bogey on five.
The American also bogeyed 10 but picked up shots on 13,14, 17 and 18 to be Garcia's nearest challenger and stay on target to play next week.
"I just brought in some confidence knowing I'm playing well," he said. "All that matters is keeping it round there so I have a chance at the weekend.
"To shoot a round like this on Friday is a great feeling."
Palmer was the only player who was not in the top 30 of the FedEx Cup rankings coming into this week to have provisionally broken into that group.
but there is potential for that to change with there being no cut in Colorado.
McIlroy picked up a shot on two but gave it back on five before he came to life with birdies on 15, 16 and 17.
Graham DeLaet, Bubba Watson and Hideki Matsuyama were a shot behind McIlroy and Horschel with Rickie Fowler, Henrik Stenson, Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott on three under.
Current FedEx Cup leader Chris Kirk shot a level-par 70 to sit one over.
Russell Knox is T41 on 143 (74-69) while Graeme McDowell is T58 after 73-72 for 145.
