RYDER CUP DISAPPOINTMENT FOR ABERDONIAN

PAUL LAWRIE PASSED OVER AS ONE

OF SKIPPER McGINLEY'S VICE-CAPTS

So, having failed to make the Ryder Cup team as a player, Paul Lawrie, one of the heroes of Medinah two years ago, has also been ignored as a vice-captain by European team captain Paul McGinley.
On his website, Paul's reaction to the news:
"To say I'm disappointed would be an understatement but we wish everyone the very best of luck."

Irishman McGinley has named compatriot Padraig Harrington and Spaniards Miguel Angel Jiménez and José María Olazábal as the men who will complete his vice captaincy line-up for at Gleneagles from September 26-28.
It means McGinley will have five vice captains by his side for the contest against the United States, the trio joining Harrington’s fellow Irishman Des Smyth and Scotland’s Sam Torrance – who were announced in March – in the backroom staff line-up.
As well as all being current players on The European Tour and therefore well known to all 12 players on the European team, which was confirmed at Wentworth Club yesterday afternoon, Harrington, Jiménez and Olazábal will also bring vast Ryder Cup experience to Scotland.
Between them the trio have played in 17 Ryder Cups; Olazábal leading the way with seven appearances between 1987 and 2006, followed by Harrington with six between 1999 and 2010 and Jiménez with four in the same time period.
Olazábal, of course, was the last European captain and guided his charges to the thrilling final day victory at Medinah two years ago. Before that, he was vice captain to Sir Nick Faldo in 2008 and Colin Montgomerie in 2010, while Jiménez was vice captain to Seve Ballesteros in 1997 and Olazábal himself in 2012. For Harrington, it will be a first taste of the vice captaincy role.
“I am delighted to name Padraig, Miguel and José María as the men to join Des and Sam in completing my vice captaincy team for Gleneagles

"They will all bring valuable insight and experience to the players and the team room,” said McGinley
“I know it’s been common in the past to have three or four vice captains but I’ve gone for five because I feel an extra person is justified due to the additional workload which comes from being the home team, in addition to how well I saw such a system working when we ended up having five vice captains under Colin Montgomerie at Celtic Manor in 2010.

“I spoke about the reasons behind choosing Des and Sam in March but the reasons behind having Padraig, Miguel and José María on side are equally compelling.

“Padraig is my oldest friend on Tour and is a guy I have known most of my life. We went to school together, came through the amateur ranks together and have been together in many contests for both Ireland and Europe over the years, so I know what he can bring to the team room.
“As well as being a three time Major Champion, Padraig is also still very active on Tour, obviously in Europe where all the players know him well, but also in the United States where he is familiar both with the Tour itself and its players“As far as Miguel is concerned, he is someone that the spectators love as well as being very popular with all the players. However he is also a person that I respect very much. I have sat beside him for over a decade on the Tournament Players’ Committee and have seen him exhibit an integrity on many occasions that is very admirable.

“Miguel’s appointment also maintains the continuity I was looking for when I named him captain of the European team for the inaugural EurAsia Cup match in March. He did very well in Malaysia that week and all the players in that team enjoyed working with him. It will be the same at Gleneagles“Finally, José María’s passion for The Ryder Cup is recognised the world over. It was obvious in his legendary partnership with Seve and was also so very apparent two years ago at Medinah, so I’m delighted he has accepted my invitation to be involved again, once more maintaining that important continuity.
“Like Miguel, he brings a wonderful Continental European flavour to the team room and is liked by everyone. He will also bring vital knowledge and experience of every element associated with The Ryder Cup, both on and off the course, which can only be helpful to the European cause.
“With these five guys in place, I have now completed both the playing and back room teams for Gleneagles. I have complete confidence and trust in all five of my vice captains and the help they will give me in the difficult quest of trying to retain The Ryder Cup.”
Harrington said: “I am really looking forward to being part of The Ryder Cup from a different angle to the playing side. That aspect of things is something that really interests me and I’m therefore delighted that Paul has given me the opportunity.
“Paul is a good friend of mine and I think he’s done a great job in the captaincy thus far, therefore I don’t necessarily think he needs that much help. But he knows I’m happy to get involved behind the scenes to give him and the players as much assistance as I can.

“Even though we are friends, it is good to see that Paul trusts my opinion. We have had many healthy debates over the years on Tour about a wide range of subjects, so in some ways this validates all those discussions!”
Jiménez said: “When Paul called inviting me to be one of his vice captains at Gleneagles, I immediately said yes. I am really excited to be involved with the European team once again and I’m honoured that Paul has asked me.
“I thoroughly enjoyed being captain of Europe at the EurAsia Cup in Kuala Lumpur in March which was a great opportunity for me and I am looking forward to bringing the experience I gained there to the team room at Gleneagles. I have a great relationship with all the players, having played alongside them regularly over the years.
“It is going to be an amazing week at Gleneagles. We have a great team and as a vice captain I will give the players and Paul my total support and hope that we can retain The Ryder Cup once again.”
Olazábal said: “I was absolutely delighted when Paul approached me and asked me to be a vice captain – I consider it a real privilege and honour to be part of the European Team going to Gleneagles.

“Everyone knows how much The Ryder Cup has meant in my career and it’s an occasion that I love being part of. It is a unique and special event – and I know that will be the case once again in Scotland in three weeks’ time
“I think we have a very good team in place but as Paul said yesterday, we are under no illusions about how formidable a test the United States team will present. But he knows I will do everything I possibly can to help him and the players throughout the week.”

GLASGOW AMATEUR LEADS WITH A 63

Kirkhill, Glasgow amateur Craig Ross shot a brilliant, bogey-free round of seven-under-par 63 - but led only by one stroke at the end of the first day in the 54-hole PGA EuroPro Tour event at Mar Hall, Bishopton near Glasgow.
As an amateur Ross  is unable to compete for the £40,000 prize fund, of which £10,000 goes to the winner, but believes because ofr that  he has less pressure to deal with than the rest of the field.
“I played well and got off to a good start,” he said. “I birdied the first and managed to knock it to about two foot on the fourth, which is a tough hole, and I kept it going from there. It was steady, solid play and I managed to take my chances when I got them.

“I have wanted to test myself against these guys. I have been watching the EuroPro on the TV and you can see it isn’t an easy level to play at because all the guys are going low. I wanted to see how I could fair against these guys.

“I think it is a bit easier for me because I am not playing for money; I can just go out and play. It is great to go out and play well and put that score together today. Tomorrow I can go out and relax and try and do the same.

“I wanted to see how I got on against the professionals. I think I will stay amateur for one more year as I want to get into the Walker Cup squad and then maybe turn pro at the end of next year.”
The cut after two rounds will see the leading 50 and ties contesting Friday's final 18 holes.

WILLIE SHAW HAS HOLE IN ONE AT FIRST NE ALLIANCE COMPETITION

NEWMACHAR AMATEURS DUFF, LAMB

LEAD THE WAY AT CRAIBSTONE

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Two Newmachar amateurs claimed the scratch honours at the first North-east Golfers' Alliance competition of the season at Craibstone Golf Club, Bucksburn.
John Duff and 20-year-old Chris Lamb were the only players in the field of 70 to score under par with one-under 68s.

Duff, pictured right, was two over par after bogeys at the first and eighth but he covered the last 10 holes in three under par with birdies at the ninth, short 12th, 16th (where he got up and down from a bunker) and the 18th in an inward 32.
"I drove the ball well all day and started to hit my approach shots close from the ninth onwards," said Duff who hasn't decided where his golfing future lies.
He has a very good record over the past two or three seasons in the North-east Alliance but John knows that's not a strong enough spur to turn pro. If he had a backer/sponsor, I get the impression he would give it a go.
Lamb, a full-time amateur at

the moment, birdied the

fourth, short sixth, ninth and

16th in two halves of 34.

He had bogeys at the second,
seventh and 15th

The best outward half of 33 was achieved by three players - the two in joint third place, Craibstone-based teaching pro Lee Vannet, a former British boys champion from Carnoustie, and Nick Macandrew (Royal Aberdeen), and also Gaetan Dillon (Kemnay).
Vannet, who went out of bounds for a double bogey 6 at the 16th,  and Macandrew came home in 37 for 70s but Dillon required 40 shots - including double bogeys at the 11th and 17th.
Aboyne teenager Kimberley Beveridge, who makes her Women's Home Internationals debut for Scotland at Aberdovey, Wales later this month, made her Alliance debut today. She was disappointed with a round of 84 but Craibstone is not a course she knows well.
Her older brother Keil, teaching pro at Kippie Lodge Sports Club, Milltimber, also played and returned a 77, with an inward half of 41.
Surprisingly on a comparatively nice, wind-free day,  the number of "No Returns" was well into double figures - a high percentage in a comparatively small field of 70

Banchory nine-handicapper Willie Shaw, [pictured right, earned a £50 voucher with a hole in one with an eight-iron at the 158yd 10th hole. It was his fourth hole over a 20-year span. Willie finished with an 82 with the proverbial game of two halves - 47 for the first nine, and 35 for the second.
+All our best wishes and hopes for a speedy recovery go to Alliance joint-sec Dave Wilson who had a heart attack after Monday night's AGM. He is currently in hospital and is to have a stent inserted in an artery.

CARNEGIE INVITATIONAL FINAL TOTALS

GRAY MAINTAINS FOUR-SHOT LEAD

TO WIN £5,500 PRIZE AT SKIBO CASTLE

Hayston's Stephen Gray maintained his four-stroke overnight lead over Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) to win the bumper first prize of £5,500 in the 36-hole Carnegie Invitational at Skibo Castle, near Dornoch, Sutherland today (Wed).
A repeat of his opening-day record eight-under-par 63 was never really on for Gray on a more difficult day for low scoring and his 72 for a seven-under total of 135 included a triple bogey 7at the 16th.
By that time the challenge of Hutcheon had faded after starting with birdies at the second, third and eighth. Bogeys at the 10th, 13th, 15tth and 16th left him with the handsome runner-up prize of £4,000.
Scott Henderson's second-round 70 was the only sub-par score of the second day and it enabled the Kings Links man to tied for third place with Carluke's Craig Ronald (70-72). They both earned £3,250.
Stephen Gray scored a double whammy by leading "The Jube Jubes" amateur trio of Greg Fairburn (9), Alan Grant (6) and William Florence (18) to victory by eight shots in the pro-am team event with a total fo 249.
Greig Hutcheon and the Rosskeen Rascals were second on 257 and Graham Fox and The Maestroes were third on 260. The three pros each earned an additional £500.

GLENEAGLES LINE-UP FOR BOTH SIDES NOW FINALISED

 TOM WATSON PICKS BRADLEY, MAHAN

AND SIMPSON TO COMPLETE LINE-UP

FROM THE GOLF.COM WEBSITE
NEW YORK -- Tom Watson has selected Keegan Bradley, Hunter Mahan and Webb Simpson for the U.S. Ryder Cup team with his three captain’s picks.
Bradley and Mahan were widely expected to make the team, but Webb Simpson was a minor surprise. Watson said he made the decision to select Simpson on Tuesday morning when he reviewed Simpson’s performance at the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah. The U.S. lost by a point after a dramatic final-day comeback by the Europeans, and Simpson compiled a 2-2 record with two 5-and-4 victories.
“Experience was big,” Watson said of the rationale behind his picks. “All three players have an even record or a winning record in the Ryder Cup.”
The three Americans join Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Matt Kuchar, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, Zach Johnson, Patrick Reed, Jim Furyk and Jimmy Walker, who all automatically qualified for the 12-man team.
The U.S. team will be underdogs against Europe when the teams square off in Gleneagles, Scotland, on Sept. 26-28. Europe has won the last two Ryder Cups and has only lost once -- in 2008 -- since 1999.
However, Watson said that “flying under the radar” could be an advantage for the Americans in Scotland.
“I have a fundamental belief in our team and more importantly our players believe they can win the Ryder Cup,” Watson said.
The announcement was a disappointment to several American players in consideration for a captain’s pick, including Chris Kirk, Brandt Snedeker, Bill Haas, Ryan Moore and others.
Watson said he called more than a half-dozen players to tell them in person that they didn’t make the team, including Kirk, who won last week’s Deutsche Bank Championship.
Earlier this summer, Watson was asked repeatedly about the possibility of selecting a struggling Tiger Woods for the team with a captain’s pick, but Woods took himself out of consideration after the PGA Championship, saying he needed to rest his ailing back. Jason Dufner is also injured and was not in consideration for a pick, Watson said.
Watson said Tuesday that Woods didn’t call him to say he was out of consideration for a captain’s pick. Watson learned that when he called Woods, he said. Asked if he considered Woods for an assistant captain on the team, Watson responded with a dismissive “no.”

In a sign of how the Ryder Cup has grown from a charming international exhibition to a “Hunger Games”-style blood feud, Watson announced his captain’s picks Tuesday evening at Studio 8H at Rockefeller Center in New York, the home of “Saturday Night Live,” in front of dozens of reporters and TV cameras, as well as Donald and Melania Trump and former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, and the event was broadcast live on the Golf Channel.
Watson sat onstage next to PGA of America president Ted Bishop and announced the picks over the course of 40 minutes or so, with each player joining the media conference via video from Denver, where the PGA Tour stops this week for the BMW Championship.
In interviews with the three players and in Watson’s comments, the theme of redemption came up repeatedly.
“All the players had one thing to say,” Watson said of his talks with his team since he got the call to be Ryder Cup captain in November 2012. “They wanted to go back and they wanted to make amends for what happened at Medinah.”
That was certainly the case with Bradley, who hadn’t opened his laundry bag from Medinah since losing the 2012 Ryder Cup. He had openly campaigned for a Ryder Cup spot and visited the host course Gleneagles with Watson earlier this summer.
“The most important thing that he brings to this is his unbridled passion to play for the Ryder Cup team,” Watson said of Bradley. Watson also advised him to clean those clothes from two years ago.
Bradley, who finished T16 at the Deutsche Bank Championship, said he thought he had played his way off the team when he got the call from Watson on Monday.
“This is a redemption year for a lot of guys,” said Bradley, who added that he was going to “get a good night’s sleep for the first time in five months” after making the team.
Mahan, who won the Barclays tournament two weeks ago, made the team on the strength of his match-play performances, Watson said. In 2012, Mahan won the Accenture Match Play Championship over Rory McIroy and returned to the finals the following year before losing to Matt Kuchar.
One of the things you look at is how you play match play -- Hunter Mahan has really shined,” Watson said. “Match play is a little different than medal play, you play the course and you play the man.”
In terms of redemption, few American players have more to play for than Mahan, who lost the final match to Graeme McDowell as the U.S. lost the 2010 Ryder Cup to Europe by a point and then broke down in tears during a team press conference. He didn’t qualify for the 2012 U.S. team.
“Winning is great and it comes and goes, but losing lingers,” Mahan said. “It stays with you for some reason. It bites at you.

“It feels just like yesterday,” he said of the 2010 Ryder Cup. “I remember walking off the green and all the fans walking past Graeme and having a big party.”
Simpson had a similar memory that lingered after the 2012 Ryder Cup.
“I’ll never forget the feeling I had watching the other team celebrate,” Simpson said.
Watson, 64 was an unconventional pick for the captain’s role, which in recent Ryder Cups had been given to a player who had just recently ended his Tour career and had never been captain of a Ryder Cup team, like Davis Love III in 2012 and Corey Pavin in 2010. An eight-time major winner, Watson was captain of the winning U.S. side in 1993 at the Belfry in England, the last time the Americans won the Cup on foreign soil.
His enthusiasm for the event is obvious. He said he still remembers missing a five-foot putt at Royal Lytham in the 1977 Ryder Cup and hearing the fans cheer, the ultimate no-no in golf.
“That’s what the Ryder Cup really is,” Watson said. “No harm done.”
Before announcing his picks, Watson recalled getting a telephone message from the PGA of America in November 2012. He had an inkling that he might be asked to captain the team.
“I sure hope this is the call I’ve been waiting for for 20 years,” he said.

Play-off winner Irishman Richard O'Donovan celebrates his maiden victory as a professional.
Preis des Hardenberg GolfResort

Play-off victory for Irish rookie Richard

O'Donovan in only fourth pro tournament

FROM THE GERMAN PGA WEBSITE
Richard O'Donovan is the winner of the 2014 Preis des Hardenberg GolfResort. The 23 year old from Ireland prevailed on the first extra hole in an evening playoff against Benjamin Weilguni from Austria.

By Matthias Lettenbichler
Northeim/Germany − What a perfect start into a professional career: Richard O'Donovan from Celbridge in Ireland turned pro only six weeks ago; now he already secured himself his maiden tour victory.
Playing par on the 12th hole of the Hardenberg GolfResort in an evening playoff against Benjamin Weilguni from Austria he won the trophy of the second last tournament of the season plus 5000 euro prize money.
"It is unbelievable", O'Donovan said after making the decisive putt. Earlier today, on his 54th hole of the tournament, he had missed a four footer to go 6 under par and win over the regulaion three rounds.
But later he managed to make the winning putt on the 12th green, the par 3 signature hole of the Hardenberg GolfResort.
After three rounds O'Donovan (72, 68, 68) and Weilguni (74, 68, 66) had shared first place with 5 under par. Third place went to Sebastian Heisele from Germany who finished 3 under par (66, 74, 70) and moved forward to runner-up position in the Pro Golf Tour Order of Merit.
Marcel Schneider (Germany) finished T27 in Northeim and remains No.1 of the ranking list. But Heisele as well as Sean Einhaus, No. 3 of the Order of Merit do have a chance by calculation to win the 2014 overal trophy themselves at the final tournament of the season in Poland by the end of the month (25th to 27th September).
For O'Donovan, who is coached by Neil Nanchip, it was his first play-off and only his fourth professional tournament.
Last week he had also taken part at the Pro Golf Tour's Gut Bissenmoor Classic but with +16 (75+83) he had clearly missed the cut (+3). This time everything went perfect for the young Irishman and especially his teeshots went where he wanted them to go.
 PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM!
Portlethen rookie pro Sam Kiloh (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) achieved his best pro tournament finish yet with a T27 on six-over 219 with ever-improving rounds of 75, 73 and 71.
Kiloh, pictured, then headed straight back to Scotland and the EuroPro Tour event at Mar Hall, Bishopton, near Glasgow, starting today.
Stablemate Philip McLean from Peterhead missed the cut with scores of 78 and 77 for 155 - seven shots over the limit.
