CARNEGIE INVITATIONAL REPORT AND SCORES

STEPHEN GRAY LEADS BY FOUR AFTER

RECORD 63 AT SKIBO CASTLE

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com

SCROLL DOWN PAST THE SCORES FOR
 WEDNESDAY'S TEE TIMES
Stephen Gray has one hand on the £5,500 first prize after a brilliant opening round of  eight-under-par 63 - one shot inside home pro David Thomson's course record - to lead by four strokes at the halfway stage of the £42,000 Carnegie Invitational at Skibo Castle.
On a great day for golf - warm sunshine and no wind - the Hayston Golf Club, Glasgow professional got off to a flying start by birdieing the first four holes at the Sutherland retreat's Carnegie Links, near Dornoch.
Five straight pars followed to see him out in four-under 31.
Gray's only bogey, at the 10th, was the springboard from which he birdied the 11th, 13th, 14th, 17th and 18h for four-under 32 home.
He has a commanding advantage over Greig Hutcheon in the race for the £5,500 first prize, one of the biggest on the Tartan Tour.
The Paul Lawrie Golf Centre man had a double-eagle round - a 3 at the par-5 fifth and a 2 at the par 4 17th in halves of 32 and 35.
Hutch also birdied the long third, seventh, and long 18th but bogeys at the second, 13th and 16th leaves him with an uphill task over the second round in his bid to win for a 10th time this season.
Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) and senior Kenny Hutton (Downfield) are sharing third place on 69.
Fox had four birdies, Hutton five and a double bogey 6 at the 16th.
Stephen Gray and "The Jube Jubes" trio of Greg Fairburn (9), Alan Grant (6) and William Florence (18) lead at halfway in the pro-am team event with a score of 20-unde3r-par 122.
Craig Ronald and the Barking Mad team are lying second on 127 with Greig Hutcheon and the Rosskeen Rascals third on 128. The teams keep the same pros for the second round.

EUROPE RYDER CUP TEAM FINALISED

European captain Paul McGinley on Tuesday completed his Ryder Cup team for Gleneagles by naming Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Stephen Gallacher as his three wild cards.

The trio will join Thomas Björn, Jamie Donaldson, Victor Dubuisson, Sergio Garcia, Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson on The PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles from September 26-28, as Europe bid to retain the trophy won in such dramatic fashion in Medinah two years ago.
Poulter and Westwood, of course, were members of that Medinah team, while Gallacher will be making his Ryder Cup debut in his home country.

There is no place for former world number one Luke Donald as Europe look to claim an eighth win in the last 10 stagings of the biennial contest against the United States on September 26-28.
Westwood has made eight consecutive appearances since making his debut in 1997, winning 21 points from 37 matches.
The 41-year-old finished seventh in the Masters in April and won in Malaysia the following week, but suffered a slump in form until a final round of 63 in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August.
He also shared the lead after the first round of the US PGA Championship before finishing 15th, but failed to advance beyond the first FedEx Cup play-off event.
Gallacher, pictured above, came agonisingly close to securing an automatic place on the team by finishing third in the Italian Open on Sunday, just one shot out of the share of second place he required.
However, McGinley stayed on in Turin after missing the cut and witnessed the Scot card a flawless closing 65 to record his 10th top-10 finish of a qualifying campaign which also saw him retain his Dubai Desert Classic title in February.
Poulter has earned the nickname 'Mr Ryder Cup' and it is hard not to see why. This is the third time he has needed a wild card to make the team, but he has raised his game on every occasion and none more so than at Medinah in 2012.
The 38-year-old won all four of his matches and famously birdied the last five holes alongside Rory McIlroy to beat Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson in the Saturday fourballs.
He also beat Webb Simpson in the singles to take his record to an amazing 12 wins from 15 matches.
"I'm in a privileged position in that I had a variety of choices and it says a lot about the European Tour and the standards we have now in Europe, the quality of the picks I have and how far we've come over the years for me to have such an abundance of talent to choose from," McGinley said.
"There are some real quality players who have performed incredibly well who are not going to make the team. It was a very difficult call to those guys involved but on the positive side I think we have three players that will add a lot to the nine already qualified who make the European team as strong as it needs to be to take on the might of America."
McGinley likened Gallacher's efforts in Turin to the way he put himself in position to make the Ryder Cup team back in 2004.
"I think his performance last week in Italy, under the spotlight, was huge," McGinley said. "He'll look back at that at the end of his career, whatever he goes on to achieve, as one of the highlights of his career, if not the highlight.
"I know from experience, I look back on my career as I come to the close of it now, at my performance in 2004 on the very last event to get my head in front and into the team. I look back on that as one of my proudest moments as a professional golfer, and Stevey will feel like that this morning. What he did, how he did it, all credit to him."
Asked how he felt now looking at his full line-up for the event, McGinley said: "Excitement is the word. Excitement is what I want the players to feel and there's certainly that. Stevey Gallacher, as you can imagine, I said, 'Stevey, you can go and have a drink and celebrate', and he said, 'Is that okay? Can I have a drink?' so he is taking this seriously no doubt.
"I'm very proud for him being Scottish. Again I'm lucky in that I've played a Ryder Cup in my home country so I know what it's going to feel like for Stevey and how proud he's going to be.
"Lee, despite the fact he's played so many times in the Ryder Cup, there's a real sense of pride on the phone that he made the team. He's very gracious, very humble about that fact he's going to be on this team.
"And well, Ian Poulter is a bundle of energy when you speak to him, you could feel the energy coming down the phone and you could feel the excitement. They were the easy phone calls, I have to say.
"The difficult ones were made too. Francesco Molinari, I just want to mention too. He was a very serious contender.
"We gave him a lot of thought, a lot of consideration and, just like Luke, he was incredibly humble and incredibly accepting of my decision even though it was a very difficult call to make. I couldn't have asked for two guys to accept the decision in a better way."
American skipper Tom Watson will name his three wild cars for Gleneagles later today (USA time).Watson has never tasted defeat in a Ryder Cup as either a player or skipper, having been involved five times between 1977 and 1993.
Well, there's always a first!

DEUTSHE BANKS CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT

LATEST WINNER  CHRIS KIRK HOPES

HE WILL GET US RYDER CUP PLACE
FROM SKY SPORTS.COM
Chris Kirk is hoping his victory at the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston, Norton, Massachusetts last night (UK time) may have earned him a place in the US Ryder Cup team.
The American, who was joint third with Rory McIlroy and Jason Day on 10 under going into the final day, carded five birdies in a final-round 66 to beat Australia's Geoff Ogilvy and fellow Americans Russell Henley and Billy Horschel by two shots.
The 29-year-old posted the biggest win of his career and moved into the top spot in the FedEx Cup playoff standings.
"I really felt good with the putter today. My biggest win ever," said Kirk, who reached 15-under 269 at TPC Boston.
"I am very happy with my win today.
"I may look calmer than some other guys in that situation, but I am still freaking out on the inside."

Consideration

"I certainly don't feel entitled, or feel like I'm a shoe-in to get a pick," Kirk said. "I've obviously really put myself into consideration, and it's something that I would love to do.
"The nine guys that made it are automatic. Those are the guys on the team. The other three? If you get in, it's a bonus."
Horschel needed a birdie to tie or an eagle to win heading to the par-five last hole. He put his drive in the middle of the fairway, giving him a shot to make the green in two.
But he fluffed his second shot, which landed well short and in a hazard. Horschel (69) settled for a bogey and fell into a three-way tie for second.
He was joined at 13-under 271 by Geoff Ogilvy (65) and third-round leader Russell Henley (70).
"I was just trying to make sure I hit a good golf shot and I hit it a little too long," Horschel said. "There are a lot of positives to take away from this week.
"It is the first time I've been in contention all year. I handled myself really well, stayed calm and stayed patient. I made one bad swing and it happened to come on the last hole."
