FEDEX CUP PLAY-OFFS: BARCLAYS CHAMPIONSHIP

KNOX FINISHES WITH HAT-TRICK OF

BIRDIES AT BARCLAYS FOR A 69

Russell Knox added a 69 - despite a double bogey 7 at the long third - to his opening 67 to be on six-under-par 136 (it's a par-71 course) in the US PGA Tour's Barclays championship.
If Knox had a bad start, he did recover with an eagle 2 at the par-4 fifth and birdies at the 16th, 17th and 18th for 33 home.
He did have a bogey at the ninth in an outward one-over-par 36.

THIRD VICTORY IN PAST FOUR YEARS

STEWART HENDERSON WINS

LANARKSHIRE ORDER OF MERIT AGAIN

Stewart Henderson (Hamilton), pictured above with the Cadzow Cup, won the Lanarkshire Golf Association's Order of Merit for the third time in four years, proving that if you are good enough age does not matter.
Stewart, 48, played in six of the seven counting events and finished no worse than sixth, including third  in the Lanark county championship at Strathaven, second in the Newlands Trophy at Lanark and first in the Cadzow Cup at Hamilton for the third time in four years.

Stewart has had a life-long affiliation with Douglas Water Golf Club and he became club champion this year for the 16th year in a row and 21st time in total.

Henderson took great pride this year in representing Lanarkshire in the SGU six-man area team championship at Ranfurly Castle and Old Ranfurly Golf Club and helped the team to a silver medal  by winning three out of four of his match-play ties.

Next month Stewart will represent Hamilton Golf Club in the Scottish club championship at Lundin Golf Club. Fife on Sunday, September 14.

Henderson hopes to keep playing top level golf for a few more years yet but he has one eye on the European Seniors Tour Qualifying School in January 2016 - if he can find a sponsor!

TWO SHOTS AHEAD AT FINISH AT ST MELLION

HAMPSHIRE PAIR  TRELEAVEN AND

BARNES WIN PGA FOUR-BALL TITLE

FROM THE PGA WEBSITE
Mark Treleaven and Jonathan Barnes kept their cool in potential nerve-shredding circumstances to win the Golfbreaks.com PGA Four-ball Championship at St Mellion today.
The duo from Hampshire began the third and final round sharing the lead with defending champions Jason Levermore and Andrew Pestell.
But while the latter’s challenge evaporated in the Cornish sunshine, Treleaven and Barnes ended the £33,250 event, which is supported by BMW, two shots clear of the field.
It was anything but a straightforward victory, however. At one time six pairs occupied pole position and, depending on one’s standpoint, it appeared either none of the sextet wanted to claim the prize or all did.
In the event, with four pairs level on 15-under-with three holes of the Jack Nicklaus-designed course to play, it was Treleaven and Barnes who seized the moment.
A birdie from Barnes at the par five 16th opened up a one-stroke advantage and another at the par four 17th from his partner, the PGA professional at Hayling Golf Club, left them needing to avoid imploding at the last to secure victory.
A double bogey would have left them level with Derbyshire duo James Whatley and Ian Walley but pars from both players ensured there was no need for a sudden death play-off.
The par meant the pair completed the tournament in 17-under and the round in three-under. Compared with the pyrotechnics of the previous day which saw the pair card a remarkable 11-under-par 61, their final round was somewhat low key.
Not that Barnes, the head PGA pro at Lee-on-the-Solent Golf Club who represented Great Britain and Ireland in the PGA Cup last year, was bothered.
“That was an exceptional score,” he reflected. “Mark played awesome yesterday, particularly on the back nine when he had five birdies and an eagle in eight holes.
“As for today, we kept an eye on the leaderboard and knew what was going on. Playing under those circumstances is good fun, especially on a great course like this one, and we really enjoyed it.
"It’s a ball-striker's course and we’re both good ball- strikers and good play got rewarded.”
That reward amounted to a £5,500 winner’s cheque while local pair, Ross Whitelock (St Mellion) and Paul Hendriksen (Dinnaton Golf Club) earned £1,816 for finishing tied fourth.

BOGEY-FREE 67 LEADS FIELD AT ROCKLIFFE HALL

JUST LIKE OLD TIMES FOR JAMIE

SPENCE AT ENGLISH SENIOR OPEN

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
England’s Jamie Spence fired a bogey-free 67 to hit the front at the end of the first round of the English Senior Open at Rockliffe Hall in the North-east of England.
Spence, who joined the Senior ranks last year after a profitable European Tour career which yielded two victories, made an unblemished five birdies – including four in five holes around the turn – to seize a one-shot lead over Zimbabwe's Tony Johnstone (68).
Two back following the opening exchanges in County Durham were Argentinian Cesar Monasterio, American Gary Rusnak and Englishmen DJ Russell and Chris Williams.
With the English Bank Holiday weekend encouraging an excellent attendance at Rockliffe Hall on Friday – as was the case when the tournament returned to the Senior Tour roster after a six-year absence last October – the North-east of England faithful were rewarded with some fine golf, not least from Spence.
“I played nicely today and it could have been even better,” said the 51 year old Tunbridge Wells native. “But it could have also been higher because I got up and down when I needed to. So it was a little frustrating but as golfers we always want more.
“I was getting irritated on the front nine because I hadn’t made birdie but fortunately I am a very patient man! I had it on the green in two on the long fourth with a really good five iron but three putted; at the seventh I chipped it up to within four feet and missed.
“So I was really annoyed and that spurred me on to the two birdies before the turn before a great up and down at ten as well. I managed to grab a couple more on 11 and 12 and then the birdie at 17 was the best of the day because that was playing very long today.”
Former Chairman of The European Tour's Tournament Committee, Spence has recently shown encouraging signs of a return to the sort of form that once saw him shoot 60 in the final round to win the 1992 European Masters, but is refusing to get ahead of himself just yet.
“It’s one round of golf, it’s a never ending battle!” continued Spence, who finished tied fourth at the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open in July and tied sixth last week at the SSE Scottish Senior Open.
“I am too long in the tooth, so I realise that one round doesn’t mean anything. I could have a 75 tomorrow and I will be kicking myself!
“But I’m happy. I have got my old caddie with me, a Scouser called Mark Stears, who used to be with me on Tour.

"He has come out with me for four weeks this year and we had a bit of success together in the past so it’s nice to have him out with me again.”
The lead might have been Johnstone’s but for a calamitous 16th, where a double bogey seven on the par five preceded a flying birdie-birdie finish.
“I hit a perfect tee shot down the 16th and tried to lay-up but produced an absolutely god-awful shot straight left which ended up virtually unplayable,” said sometimes-Sky Sports commentator Johnstone, who last won on the Senior Tour five years ago.
“I had to hack out, get up to the green and then three-putted so I made a complete horses of the whole thing.
“But I hit the ball well all day and fortunately that returned on the finish. I hit a four iron to 15 feet at 17 and made that and 18 I hit a five iron to 20 feet and holed that, which was nice after the shambles at 16.
“Something just clicked this morning – I hit more good shots today than I have done all season!”
There was also a solid start on Friday from reigning Senior Tour Number One Paul Wesselingh, who opened with a two under par 70 – as did former Ryder Cup captain Mark James – to lie just three off the lead heading into the weekend at Rockliffe Hall.

CHALLENGE TOUR'S ROLEX TROPHY EVENT

JENSEN TWO AHEAD IN SWITZERLAND

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
As has been the case at the end of the previous two rounds, Lasse Jensen is once again at the head of affairs at the Challenge Tour's Rolex Trophy after a 67 on day three at Golf Club de Genève, Switzerland.
The Copenhagen native is 18 under par and two strokes clear of his nearest challenger – Benjamin Hebert – who fired a best of the day 65 on Friday to move into second place.
Plenty of red numbers over the front nine were once again the foundation for Jensen’s leading position, carding five gains over the first half of the round, before another at the 12th saw him pull well clear of the chasing pack.
He closed with a bogey at the par four last, which took the shine off an otherwise ideal day in Geneva, but he still enters the final round in perfect position to pick up a maiden European Challenge Tour title.

ERSKINE MAN HEADS HUGE FIELD WITH 142 TOTAL

RONNIE CLARK WINS SENIORS'

AUTUMN MEETING AT PANMURE

Erskine's Ronnie Clark continued his winning ways with victory in the Scottish Senior Golfing Society's 36-hole autumn meeting at Panmure Golf Club on Thursday-Friday.
Clark was trailing after a first-round 74 but he made up the leeway - and some - with an excellent second-round 69, one under par and five under the CSS.
His 36-hole aggregate of 142 saw him finish at the head of a huge field by one stroke from Jalil Aman (Grangemouth) who shot 71-72 for 143.
The leading pair finished clear of the pack with third-placed David Shields (Glenearn) back on 146 after rounds of 72 74.
Jalil Aman, playing off two, had the best net aggregate of 139 (69-70), two shots ahead of runner-up Gerry Curran (Mortonhall) with 141 (72-69) off five.

JAMIE DONALDSON LEADS BY ONE SHOT

STEPHEN GALLACHER STILL IN THE

MIX AT HALFWAY

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Jamie Donaldson continued his commanding charge towards a third European Tour title and an automatic qualification spot for The 2014 Ryder Cup as the Welshman maintained his one-shot lead at the halfway point of the inaugural Czech Masters.
The 38 year old, who currently sits in eighth position in The Ryder Cup Points List, entered the second round with a single stroke advantage after a six under par opening round 66 and, having negotiated his first nine holes in one under, he soon put the pedal to the metal.
Birdies at the first (his tenth), third, fourth and sixth moved him four shots clear of the pack momentarily but he would follow that with back to back bogeys at the seventh and eighth to settle for a three under par 69 and a nine under par total, one ahead of Grégory Bourdy.
The Frenchman, who already has four European Tour titles to his name, signed for a five under par 67 to move to eight under for the tournament.
The round of the day came from Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, who fired a stunning seven under par 65 to establish a new course record at the stunning Albatross Golf Resort and move into a share of third place on seven under, where he was joined by another Ryder Cup hopeful – Scotland's Stephen Gallacher (67) – and three others.

Key player quotes:
Jamie Donaldson 66-69 (-9)
“I played nicely again and made a lot of birdies out there today, but a few bogeys so if I can go out there tomorrow and play as well as I’ve played over the last couple of days I’ll be in a strong position going into the final round.
“I really got on a great run, played really well and hit a decent shot at into seven. I didn’t think it was going to go that far and it went long, then I misjudged the chip and then did the same on eight.
“I had a good bunker shot at the last to par. Overall it was a solid day but it could have been very good out there.
“I won't dwell on the poor shots, I played two pitches at seven and eight and misjudged them both so one’s come out hot and one’s come out dead. That slowed the run down, up until that point I was really motoring.
“It’s a great golf course, it’s generous off the tee and you’re setting yourself up for birdies on a regular basis. Hopefully it will be more of the same and go and attack at the weekend.
“We had good fun out there (with Stephen Gallacher), good chat all the way around. We both played well, he got on a good run as well as me so it was good fun out there, plenty of banter."
Grégory Bourdy 69-67 (-8)
“I'm very happy to be in this position, it was a great round today, really solid. I really enjoy this course and enjoy this place so that’s why I’m feeling confident here.
“I just missed a few putts but the rest was very good, it was a good start so I’ll try to do the same at the weekend.
“A bit like yesterday, I started very well with a few birdies and after nine holes I was four under. Then I birdied one and two (his tenth and 11th) so it was difficult to do better than that. I had two bogeys in a row and then birdied six, which was important to get confidence for the end of the round.
“I like almost everything about this place. I like the design and when I arrived on Monday and played Tuesday I was surprised it was so good, especially the conditions. I think the greens are probably in the top three we have on The European Tour.
“They are quick and great conditions. The whole course is very good and the practise facilities are probably some of the best we have on tour. I feel good here and also to be in Prague, it’s a lovely city, and we’re staying in town so I'm enjoying every moment here."
Tommy Fleetwood 72-65 (-7)
“I had no idea it was a course record. I just came in and signed the card and thought ‘that’s a good score’ and Carmel the recorder said we needed a new card to sign for the record.
“It’s a nice little bonus. It might be broken over the weekend, it might even be me who breaks it but it’s always nice to shoot a course record, play well and get in the mix.
“You play it in practice and you hit quite a few wedges in and then here are the par fives, and it seems alright, but then you get the tournament and they tuck the pins away and it does make it a different course.
“I think everybody was surprised at how low the leading score was yesterday but it’s obviously very bunched and I showed today that you can score on it and Jamie’s playing great on it. It’s not played as easy as we thought it would. They put the pins away and I think it’s worked really well."
Stephen Gallacher, 70-67 (-7)
“It was a good five under and a good back nine, back in five under to get myself back in contention. That’s all you can ask in the second round, that you’re in touching distance with two rounds to play.
“I played better today. I struggled off the tee yesterday and you can’t get close to the pins when you do that so today I hit a lot more fairways and when you’re on the fairways you can attack it much better.
“Jamie led yesterday and he played well and then he got off to the same start so I was just trying to hang in and stay as close to him as I could."

ASIAN DEVELOPMENTAL TOUR EVENT

BYRNE SLIDES OUT OF JAKARTA LEAD
First-round leader James Byrne, the former Walker Cup player from Banchory, slipped down to a share of sixth place after sliding from 64 to two-over-par 74 on the second day of the Asian Development Tour event, the Ciputre Golfpreneur Tournament at Damai Indah Golf Club, Jakarta.
Byrne had three birdies but a double bogey and three bogeys.
"I didn't hole as many putts as I did in the first round. I wasn't expecting to shoot another 64 but I was trying to shoot under par. There is a low score on this golf course but you have to be careful where you place your shots," said the 25-year-old Byrne.
Ireland's Niall Turner is sharing the second-round lead with Michael Moore (Australia) on eight-under-par 136
The halfway cut was set at one-over-par 145 with a total of 52 players progressing into the weekend rounds.
Leading second round scores:
Par 144 (2x72)
136 Niall Turner (Ire) 69 67, Michael MOORE (Aus) 71 65
137 Jian-feng Ye (Chi) 68 69, Sattaya Supupramai (Tha) 69 68, Poosit Supupramai (Tha) 67 70
138 Jake Stirling (Aus) 68 70, James Byrne (Sco) 64 74, Annop Tangkamol Prasert (Tha) 69 69

WEB.COM TOUR'S PORTLANT OPEN, OREGON

ANOTHER BAD DAY AT THE OFFICE

FOR JIMMY GUNN: ONE-OVER-PAR 72

Jimmy Gunn's disappointing season on the Web.com Tour continued yesterday with a one-over-par 72 in the Portland Open at Witch Hollow@Pumpkin Ridge, North Plains Oregon.
Too many bogeys - at the third, fifth, ninth, 10th and 12th - and two few birdies (at the fourth, seventh, 16th and 18th) - left the Dornoch exile sharing 88th place, nine shots behind the joint leaders by two shots, both Americans: Matt Fast and Ken Bulle with eight-under-par 63s
