Wonderful Warren seals Danish win

by two shots from Dredge

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Marc Warren converted his fine recent form into a first European Tour title for seven years, courtesy of a two-stroke victory in Made in Denmark at Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort.
The Scot, who finished tied 15th in last week’s US PGA Championship, carded a confident three under par closing round of 68 for a winning total of nine under par 275, while the player he shared the overnight leader with, Welshman Bradley Dredge, finished runner up on seven under par following a round of 70.
Englishman Philip Archer (69) was third on four under par while Thomas Björn (69) finished as the leading Dane on three under par, sharing fourth position with English pair Eddie Pepperell (69) and Oliver Fisher (69), boosting his hopes of sealing an automatic Ryder Cup spot.

Warren's financial reward amounted to 250,000 euros.
Key player quotes

Marc Warren (-9): ” It feels incredible. I felt the last couple of years I’ve been close to winning a couple of times but for whatever reason it hasn’t  quite happened for me, whether I’ve made mistakes or someone else has played really well.

"This summer I fell more confident that I’ve ever done. Today I kept telling myself I was swinging the club really well and I was confident in what I was doing. I was happy to see the win come up as it would be difficult for someone to come out the pack.”
Bradley Dredge (-7): “In a way there are mixed feelings in that if someone said they’d give me second at the beginning of the week it is a great result, considering I’ve not had a chance to win in a long time.

"But it was a chance to win a tournament. Marc did play really well and I didn’t play well enough, but it would have been nice to have pushed him a little harder coming down the last few.”
Thomas Björn (-3): “I was quite determined when I got out there today and got the good start I wanted. I just ran dry on the greens. It wasn’t to be. I thought if I could rattle off a few birdies I could apply some pressure.

"The greens were where I struggled this week. I drove the ball fantastic and there are a lot of good things to build on. I always say if you finish top ten in a golf tournament you have played pretty well. I did that this week, but it wasn’t to be.”

With this win – Marc Warren
*His third European Tour International Schedule victory in his 261st European Tour event.

*His first European Tour victory since the 2007 Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. This would be a gap of six years and 342 days between victories.
*Played 190 European Tour events between victories number two and three. Only played in 29 events between wins one and two.
*Moves to €803,152 and …position in The Race to Dubai.

*Could move to inside the top 70 of the Official World Golf Ranking from 89th.
*Continues his fine recent form. Was third in the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, tied 39th in The 143rd Open Championship and tied 15th at the US PGA Championship.
*Has won €577,779 in his last four European Tour events.

*Second Scottish victory of the 2014 European Tour season after Stephen Gallacher (Omega Dubai Desert Classic) and Marc Warren (Made in Denmark).
*The 134th Scottish victory in European Tour history.

CONNOR SYME WINS N-E DISTRICT OPEN

BY FOUR SHOTS FROM BARRIE EDMOND

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Beaten by Bradley Neil in the semi-finals of the British amateur championship at Royal Portrush, Connor Syme (Drumoig) showed his class in scoring his first SGU 72-hole Order of Merit tournament success at rain windswept Peterhead Links on Sunday.
Connor, 19-year-old son of former Dumfries and County club professional Stuart Syme, who has bought and re-opened Drumoig Golf Centre, finished with a flourish, getting an eagle 3 at the last hole to win the North-east District Open Championship by four shots.
He had been two shots clear playing the last and that eagle doubled his winning margin.
"I always seem to play well in the North and North-east. Maybe I like bad weather!" said twice Scottish schoolboys champion Syme who had scores of 72, 66, 70 and 70 for a two-under-par total of 278 in typical Peterhead weather - windy, wet and sometimes sunny!
Connor felt it was a little too early to claim that his clear-cut victory was the result of now being able to practice whenever he liked at the Drumoig's excellent facilities but he did feel that he was a lot more settled since his Mum moved up recently from Dumfries for the Symes to reform as a family unit.
They are meantime living in Dundee prior to accommodation being built at Drumoig.
Connor went three shots clear of the field after three rounds but had three times Aberdeen Links champion Barrie Edmond (Bon Accord) snapping at his heels for a long way in the final round.
Syme began his final round with a couple of birdies but a double bogey at the short sixth and bogeys either side cancelled that out and he and Edmond, although not playing together, were actually level after both had played nine holes.
But the challenge of 36-year-old Edmond, who felt his game began to slip with a bogey at the ninth, faltered with bogeys at the 13th, 15th and 16th. He finished with a birdie for a 71 and a two-over-par total of 282.
"After the bogey at the eighth, I parred the next nine holes before finishing with that eagle," said Connor.
Kyle Godsman (Moray) closed with a 69 for 283 and third place.
Nick Macandrew (Royal Aberdeen), pictured below, winner already this summer of an SGU
Order of Merit event, the Battle Trophy at Crail where he beat Jamie Savage in a play-off, was there or thereabouts among the leaders through the first three rounds.
Then the wheels came on in a final round of 80 which pushed him out of the top 10. He had a horrible start to his final round with a rash of double bogeys and bogeys, requiring 44 blow sto reach the turn.
Nick settle down on the inward nine, covering them in 36 shots, but it was too little too late.
