BALMORE PLAYER LEADS AT PETERHEAD

BALMORE MAN LEADS AT HALFWAY IN

NORTH-EAST DISTRICT OPEN

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Balmore's Christopher Maclean has made all the running through the first two rounds to lead by a single shot at the halfway point of the North-east District Open golf championship at Peterhea.d
Maclean, who finished joint fifth in the Tennant Cup and shared 17th place in the East of Scotland Open, opened with a four-under-par 66 and tagged on a one-over71 for a three-under-par tally of 137.
His closest rival going into the second half of the SGU 72-hole Order of Merit tournament is two-time Scottish schoolboys champion Connor Syme whose father, professional Stuart Syme, recently bought and re-opened the Drumoig Golf Centre near Leuchars as the family moved their base from Dumfries to Fife.
Royal Aberdeen's Nick Macandrew who beat Jamie Savage - later to win the irish open amateur title - in a play-off to win the Battle Trophy 72-hole tournament at Crail earlier this summer, is poised in third place on 140 (68-72) for a Sunday-best finish.
Because of the disappointing size of the field - there were 14 withdrawals and five "No Shows," bringing the number down to only 43 starters, there was no cut.

LAST TWO AMERICANS BEATEN IN SEMI-FINALS

CANADIAN v S KOREAN IN FINAL OF

UNITED STATES AMATEUR CH/SHIP

The final of the United States Amateur championship will not have an American player in it!
This morning's (local time) semi-finals at the Atlanta Athletic Club, Georgia were won by South Korean Gunn Yang (20), ranked No 776 in the world, and 22-year-old Canadian Corey Conners, No 619 in the WAGR.
Yang is the lowest/highest-ranked player ever to reach the U.S. Amateur final. In 2011, the USGA tweaked its qualification process to grant the top 50 players in the World Amateur Ranking an automatic exemption into the U.S. Amateur. It was trumpeted as a move that would improve the quality of the field, and indeed it has – since 2011, four of the six finalists have been ranked inside the top 50 worldwide. Last year was a battle between No. 2 Matt Fitzpatrick and No. 13 Oliver Goss.
That’s not the case this year.
Yang beat Pepperdine University junior Frederick Wedel from Texas at the 19th.
Wedel had beaten four-time USGA champion Nathan Smith from Pittsburgh 4 and 3 in Friday's quarter-finals over the 7,360yd, par-71 Highlands Course.
Yang beat high school senior Cameron Young, of Scarborough, New York by two holes in the quarter-finals.
Corey Conners from Listowel, Ontario, Canada, a recent graduate of Kent State University, had advanced to the semi-finals for the second consecutive year with a 2 and 1 win over Oklahoma State sophomore Zachary Olsen .
In the round of the last four, Conners beat  University of Virginia All-American Denny McCarthy, 21, of Rockville, Maryland by 3 and 2.

+It's  the second weekend in a row that  a Canadian is in the final at a U.S. amateur golf championship.
One week ago Brooke Mackenzie Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ontario, lost in the US women's amateur championship final at Glen Cove, New York.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE SENIOR SENIORS AT THORPEMESS

SCOT MURRAY WHITE AND JOHN

GRIFFIN WIN PGA SUPER-60s' TITLE

Hertfordshire golfers Scots-born Murray White and John Griffin refused to feel the pressure as they battled stormy conditions to win the PGA Super 60s Championship at Thorpeness.
The pair overcame sporadic heavy wind and rain, which caused dropped shots throughout the field, to hold onto a strong overnight lead and win the title by two shots.
For Penfold Park Golf Club's PGA professional White and his amateur partner Griffin, a successful 72-year-old entrepreneur who has appeared on the hit Channel 4 TV Show "Secret Millionaire,2 the win was testament to their fighting spirit.
The rain-soaked course, particularly battered during a two-hour delay in the first round, was taking no prisoners, and many of the leaders faded away over the front nine.
But White and Griffin, buoyed by a birdie at the second, battled their way to a final score of five-under-par 135 (61-74) which was enough to secure first place and the lion’s share of a £10,000 prize fund.
Murray pocketed £1,250.
Their closest challengers Parnell Reilly (Bradley Park) and David James, whose one-under par 69 featured an incredible seven birdies and six bogeys, ultimately ended with a three-under-par  total of 137.
Penfold Park pro White had been the talk of the clubhouse after carding an incredible six birdies over the back nine on day one when the pair returned a brilliant score of 61.
And he admitted the pressure to repeat the feat loomed large as he approached the course on day two.
“There are two kinds of pressure when you take the lead in the tournament,” White explained.
“It’s a fear of making a complete fool of yourself by really messing things up, and also the fear of losing when it is clear you are in a winning position.
“Obviously for us it was more the latter today, but I think we approached things in the right way.
“John is a very calm person, and we didn’t end up getting too nervy.
“Conditions were much tougher today than they were yesterday, but I feel we dealt with that and that’s why we held out to win.”
Left-hander Griffin, who sold his business earlier this summer and has been using much of the extra time to play golf, said the practice paid off during an important event.
“We get together and play every Saturday morning,” he explained.
“It keeps us fit and healthy and it’s always good fun, and, of course, it meant that I had plenty of practice before I got here.
“For the pros here it is a really important event, as it allows them to re-connect with people who they have grown up playing golf with.
“It has been great to be a part of that, and to win has made it extra special.
“This is a big tournament, and first place is always a good place to be – we are absolutely delighted to have won here.”
Also on offer at Thorpeness was the Superb 70s, awarded to the highest placed pairing over 70 years of age.
Jack Timms and David Snell took the title after finishing tied 22nd overall with a seven-over-par 147.

MONASTERIO STILL LEADS SCOTTISH SENIOR OPEN

WOOSNAM MOVES UP AT WINDSWEPT

FAIRMONT ST ANDREWS

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Welshman Ian Woosnam used every ounce of his vast experience to move within three shots of first-round leader Cesar Monasterio after an intriguing, windswept Moving Day at the SSE Scottish Senior Open.
Despite needing 15 more shots than in his record-equalling 61 on Friday, Argentinian rookie Monasterio (76) retained his three-shot lead on seven under par with 18 holes to come at Fairmont St Andrews following a day dominated by a stiff breeze on the east coast of Scotland.
Woosnam (72), Spaniard Pedro Linhart (72) and English rookie Mark Davis (74) are Monasterio’s nearest challengers, forming a three-way tie for second place on four under par heading into Sunday.
With winds gusting upwards of 20 miles per hour for most of the day, conditions were the polar opposite of those seen in the first round, when an almost flat calm led to some excellent scores – not least from Monasterio, who equalled the lowest round in Senior Tour history with his 11 under par 61 on Friday.
While 40 players were under par overnight, just 18 remained there at close of play with the field scoring average soaring from just above 71 on Friday to almost 77 in round two, while there was just one sub-par round completed on Saturday.
Former Masters Tournament Champion Woosnam seemed to relish the conditions, though, holing putts of 40 feet at the first and second holes for an opening birdie and par, while a 20-foot effort at the third brought a second gain of the day.
The 56 year old former World Number One went on to mix five bogeys and three further birdies – including a four at the last – to move within sight of Monasterio.
“It was hard getting it on the green and even harder once you were on it,” said Woosnam, who is chasing a first Senior Tour victory since the Berenberg Masters in 2011.
“Anything from a foot out is difficult because it’s so tricky making a decent stroke in this wind. But I holed some good putts and level par was just about right and a decent score in these conditions.
“I have struggled with windy golf for a long time but decided to go back to basics. I opened my stance a bit more and put the ball further back. It’s how I used to play and it seems to be paying off.”
Phillip Golding was the solitary player to card an under par round in the testing conditions on Saturday as a brilliant 70 propelled the Englishman 35 places up the leaderboard into a seven-way tie for sixth on two under par.
Golding, who revelled in similarly inclement weather to claim his maiden Senior Tour triumph at the Speedy Services Wales Senior Open at Royal Porthcawl last year, found four birdies and dropped just two shots all day, getting up and down on a number of occasions to stride into contention in Scotland.
“I enjoy playing in tough conditions,” said the 52 year old. “For me it gives you a bit more clarity. You have to play with the wind, keep it low, it demands a lot more imagination – as all links golf does.
“While it doesn’t perhaps have the fast-running fairways like somewhere such as Royal Porthcawl does, as a modern links course it is still designed to be played in the wind, it comes into its element when it blows.”
Monasterio, meanwhile, made a double bogey at the eighth and a further four bogeys before a closing birdie at the 18th ensured the 50 year old maintains an excellent chance of securing a maiden title in just his fourth start on the Senior Tour.
“It was completely different,” he reflected. “It makes everything difficult the wind – the driving, the irons, the putting, and I will have to concentrate and use my brain tomorrow to try to win!”
With more strong winds forecast for Sunday, the final round will be played in threeballs from the first and tenth tees, with starting times set for between 0800 and 1000.

MARC WARREN SHARES LEAD IN

DENMARK AFTER 65 IN ROUND 2

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Scotland’s Marc Warren tamed the difficult windy conditions at Himmerland Golf  and Spa Resort with a master five under par round of 66 to share the lead with Bradley Dredge going into the final round of Made in Denmark.
Warren, who recorded a top 15 finish in last week’s US PGA Championship, started the third round seven shots behind Dredge, but carded eight birdies, including four over the closing six holes, and three bogeys to reel in the Welshman, who posted a round of 73.
The pair are tied on six under par 207, with Northern Ireland’s Gareth Maybin (68) and Englishman Simon Wakefield sharing third position, three shots back on three under par.
Home favourites Thorbjørn Olesen (72) and Thomas Björn (73) finished on two under par and one under par respectively, and will be hoping to feed off the large galleries if they are to make a final day charge.
Key player quotes
Marc Warren (-6): “The conditions were tougher and that suited us guys who were miles behind. Bradley played well the first two days, we needed a tougher day to bring him back and give us a chance if you shoot a good score. Fortunately I was able to do that today.
“It’s been a good summer for me. I’ve played consistently well. The Scottish Open was a very good week for me and then I continued to perform at The Open. I didn’t have a great Sunday there but the US PGA was great last week, finishing top 15. So confidence is high, the game is in good shape and to shoot a score like that, in a day as tough as today, just adds to the confidence again.”
Bradley Dredge (-6): “It was windier today so a bit more difficult and unfortunately I didn’t play as well either. It was a tough day, but I’m still joint leader which is a great position. All I can do is give it my best tomorrow.
“I saw that Mark Warren sot 66 there today which is a great score. He’s obviously in good form so it will be a tough day tomorrow. The wind will still be blowing so I’m going to have to play well.”
Gareth Maybin (-3): “I’ve played pretty well over the three days. The first day I shot four over but it was brutal and I didn’t make any putts. I played pretty similar the last few days but I made some putts. The wind suits me with my low ball flight. I guess growing up in Northern Ireland helps when you have some wind.”
Thomas Björn (-1): “Let’s get it windy tomorrow and see if we can put in a low number. Marc obviously showed it is possible to do that on this golf course and that is up there with one of the best rounds I’ve seen in a long, long time.”

HOEY'S TALE OF WOE AFTER EARLY EXIT

FROM SKYSPORTS.COM
Michael Hoey was forced to withdraw from the Made in Denmark Open after incorrectly assuming he had missed the halfway cut.
The Northern Irishman – a five-time winner on the European Tour – finished on four-over after his opening two rounds (73-73) and thought he would not qualify for weekend action.
As such he flew from Aalborg in Denmark to Amsterdam, only to discover on arrival that he had made the cut after a bogey from James Heath in Friday’s final group.
Hoey then attempted to book a return flight but was informed that his clubs had been lost in transit by the airline.
Unable to recover them in time to board the only flight that would have enabled him to make Saturday morning’s early tee-time, he was subsequently forced to withdraw from the event.
An exasperated Hoey took to Twitter to explain his predicament, writing: “Home after a nightmare 24hrs, left Aalborg for Amsterdam, arrived watched scores made cut. KLM lost my clubs, missed flight back.”
However, there was some good news for him as he added: “Couldn't get private jet, train, car or any other way back so came home! At least I found my clubs this morning at Schiphol #silverlinings.”

BRITISH BOYS'CHAMPIONSHIP AT PRESTWICK

FERGUSON'S GALLANT RUN ENDS

AT 19th IN SEMI-FINALS

Ewen Ferguson failed to make it through to the final of the British boys championship for the second year in a row - but what a great title defence he made at Prestwick.
The Bearsden teenager's winning run which started in the first round of last year's championship continued until the 19th hole of this year's semi-finals.
That's where he had to admit defeat to Oskar Bergqvist (Sweden) in this afternoon's semi-finals.
The other finalist is Ireland's Rowan Lester from the Hermitage club, Lucan, Co Dublin. He beat Tim Harry from the Vale Resort, near Cardiff, by 4 and 2.
So it is Bergqvist v Lester for the title - but Ferguson was nearly there again.
The last Scot to play in successive finals of the British boys was Fraserburgh's Jordan Findlay. He won the title at Conwy in Wales in 2003 but was beaten in the 2004 final.
No boy has won back-to-back British championships since the 1930s.

LESTER AND BERGQVIST MEET IN THE 2014 BOYS

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE R and A
Ireland’s Rowan Lester will meet Oskar Bergqvist of Sweden  in Sunday's 36-hole final of the 88th Boys' Amateur Championship at Prestwick.
Lester, from  Hermitage Golf Club, Lucan, Co Dublin, defeated Welshman Tim Harry 4 and 2 in the Semi-Final while Bergqvist survived a tight battle with defending champion Ewen Ferguson of Scotland.
The 16-year-old Swede won a close match on the 19th with a birdie to edge out the Scottish boys' match-play and stroke-play champion.
The competitors faced difficult conditions with blustery winds and driving rain throughout the day. After sending Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan home with a 2 and 1 victory in the morning Quarter Final, Lester faced Harry for a place in the Final.
The pair halved the first hole with pars and when Harry bogeyed the second Lester took the lead and didn’t relinquish it for the rest of the match.
He gained momentum with a birdie on the 3rd hole and despite a run of bogeys he was able to secure his victory with a second birdie to win the 16th hole.
The 18-year-old is now set to compete in the biggest match of his golfing career tomorrow after representing Ireland in both the recent Boys Home Internationals at Western Gailes and the European Boys Team Championships in Norway.
Lester has been on form throughout the week having led after the first round of stroke play qualifying.
Bergqvist has enjoyed a smoother path to the Final and hadn’t required more than 16 holes in any of his matches until his Semi-Final with Ferguson. The Swede had earlier enjoyed a 3&2 win over Denmark’s Christoffer Bring.
The Semi-Final was a closely contested affair with neither player able to take more than a one hole advantage over the other. Ferguson carded his second birdie of the day on the 15th to regain the lead after Bergqvist dropped a shot but the match quickly returned to all square when the Swede answered back with a birdie to win the next hole.
With the pair still tied on the par-4 18th, Ferguson placed his approach shot to within five feet before Bergqvist rolled in a ten-footer to save par. When Ferguson missed his birdie putt to close out the match the pair moved back to the first tee.
With a large gallery of spectators gathered around the green, Ferguson hit his approach to twelve feet and pin high before Bergqvist played a brilliant shot from the rough that landed three feet from the pin. With the match on the line, Ferguson failed to sink the putt and his fate was sealed by Bergqvist’s birdie.
Key quotes
Rowan Lester
“I feel great, I’m really confident in my game and I’m going to try and go out there tomorrow and enjoy it really. Normally I am quite nervous in tournaments but for some reason I haven’t felt very many nerves at all, which is good.”
“Today I was just that bit better than Tim, he was a touch off while I played pretty well. I handed him a few holes but I was able to get them back with a few good up-and-downs.
Oskar Bergqvist
“I’m feeling terrible, this wasn’t my game. It was Ewen’s game all along. He missed a couple of putts and I holed a couple of putts but he should be the one in the final.”
“I’m very proud to represent Sweden here. I’m going to try to be prepared to 100% for tomorrow.”
The 36-hole final between Lester and Bergqvist will begin at 8:30 am on Sunday with the second 18 holes to be played at approximately 1:00pm.

CHARLIE FORD LEADS CHALLENGE TOUR IN FINLAND

DAVID LAW SHOOTS UNDER PAR - BUT

DROPS OUT OF TOP TEN!

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Charlie Ford takes a one-shot advantage into Sunday's final round of the Challenge Tour's Vacon Open in Finland but the four-under-par 67 on the Englishman's scorecard came nowhere close to describing a dramatic day in which he bounced back from a triple-bogey 8 to finish with back-to-back birdies.
Ford shares his surname with a famous automobile brand and it was certainly apt on a day when he took the scenic route to the top at the picturesque Kytäjä Golf, firing on all cylinders for the opening 12 holes before one car-crash hole knocked him off course.
That triple-bogey at the par five 14th meant the 29 year old fell one shot behind Mark Tullo, having led by four shots at one point, but he rallied to two closing birdies to earn the outright overnight lead.
The Leicester native, who had shared the overnight lead after round one, moved to 14 under par and while he was disappointed not to have opened up a wider gap at the top, he was over the moon with the round as a whole.
“I hit it unbelievably well all day,” said Ford, who won his maiden Challenge Tour back in 2010 at the Turkish Airlines Challenge.

“I was six under in those first 13 holes and I had chances to be more than that. It’s probably the best I’ve ever hit it over a long stretch of holes.
“Then I got to 14, hit a perfect drive to the middle of the fairway, could have gone right of the tree and tried to get on in two, but I decided to be sensible and lay up to the left.
“I lost that shot to the right, into the hazard and from there, maybe I tried to be a little too cute and go for it, but it took me three to get out of the hazard in the end. I knocked it up to 12 feet, put my first putt past and then missed the five-footer coming back.
“That shook me a little bit for a couple of holes, and I bogeyed the 16th, but there was a little walk to the 17th and I just tried my best to regroup. I knew there were two good chances coming in, if I could just trust myself again, and I hit four really good shots on the last two for two nice birdies.
“It was a nice comeback after what could have been a disastrous run. I was in complete cruise control, to have something so shocking happen I could have easily parred the last two and come back really disappointed.
“I felt I really showed some character there to bounce back and I definitely feel a lot better now than I could have done.”
Tullo, meanwhile, made a significant move on moving day and he will enter the final round one shot behind Ford on 13 under par courtesy of a six under par 65.
Pelle Edberg carded the round of the day as the Swede briefly threatened to make the magic number of 59, negotiating his first 15 holes in ten under par before a double-bogey at the eighth, his 17th, put paid to those hopes.
An eight under par 63, however, was enough to move him to 11 under par and just three shots off the lead, just behind Austria’s HP Bacher and Guillaume Cambis of France, who both carded level par 71s to share third place on 12 under.

Aberdeen's David Law shot his third sub-par round in a row - a one-under 70 - but so high is the standard of play on European's No 2 pro tour that he dropped down out of the top 10 to joint 14th on 204, only five shots off the lead.
Law could have done with the 66 which compatriot Wallace Booth had today - his second in three rounds. The Crieff man is joint 24th on 207

NORTH-EAST DISTRICT OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

MACLEAN LEADS BY TWO AFTER

FIRST ROUND AT PETERHEAD

Balmore's Christopher Maclean opened up a two-stroke lead with a first round of four-under-par 66 in the North-east District Open championship at Peterhead Golf Club today.
His closest rivals going into this afternoon's second round were Anthony Blaney (Liberton) and Nick Macandrew (Royal Aberdeen), both on the 68 mark.
North-east District secretary George Young was very disappointed with the size of the field - one of the lowest, if not THE lowest for the championship.
There were 14 withdrawals, including current Scotland internationals Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon) and Craig Ross (Kirkhill), and past cap Scott Borrowman (Dollar), as well as five no shows, leaving only 43 to tee off.
