NORWEGIAN CHALLENGE TOURNAMENT ROUND ONE

GROUNDED GERMAN FLORIAN

FRITSCH LEADS WITH A 64

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
Florian Fritsch flew into an early lead in the Norwegian Challenge after shooting a sensational round of 64 at Miklagard Golf Club.
The German, whose fear of flying forces him to drive across Europe to tournaments, went out in 32 and raced home in the same number of strokes to set the pace on eight under par, one shot clear of the French duo of Benjamin Hebert and Guillaume Cambis, who made a hole in one for the second week running.

FOX MOVES UP AT BLAIRGOWRIE:

STAGE SET FOR LAST-DAY DRAMA

Despite a double bogey 6 at the third hole, Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) moved up to a share of 12th place on the penultimate day of the lucrative Glenmuir PGA professional championship over the Lansdowne course at Blairgowrie Golf Club.
Fox birdied the first, second, sixth, eighth and 17th for a two-under-par 70 to tag on to his earlier rounds of 70 and 73.
On three-under 213, Fox is five shots behind the trio sharing the lead - Jason Levermore (Channels (71-68-68), Giuseppe Licagta (Bristol Golf Centre) (68-72-68) and Christopher McDonnell (Troon Golf Management) (67-72-78).
Whether or not Fox can make up five shots over the closing 18 holes is a moot point but a battle royal is assured with two shots spanning the leading six players.
David Orr (Mearns Castle) is the second best Scot in joint 25th place on 216 (74-71-71).

Paul Lawrie finished a close-up joint third on his debut in the Farmfoods British Par-3 Championship at Nailcote Hall, Warwickshire today.
The bumper first prize of £25,000 was won by Eddie Pepperell who beat a lesser known Englishman, Jack Hamblett, at the third hole of a sudden death play-off. Pepperell chipped in for a winning birdie 2.
Pepperell and Hamblett finished seven-under-par 101, Pepperell with rounds of 52 and 49 against a par of 54.
Hamblett scored 51 and 50.
Lawrie and Gary Wolstenholme shared third place, only one shot behind the play-off participants on 102 in a field of 56 players.
Lawrie had the lowest score of the 36-hole tournament, an eight-under-par 46 in his second round after leaving himself with a lot of work to do following a first-round two-over 56.
Wolstenholme, who had a hole in one in his second round, scored 54-48.

SCOTS WIN TWO OUT OF THREE MATCHES IN HOME INTERATIONALS

SCOTS FINISH RUNNERS-UP TO

ENGLAND BOYS AT WESTERN GAILES

England beat defending champions Ireland 8-7 on the final day at Western Gailes Golf club to win the boys' home internationals' title with three victories out of three.
But it was a closer run conclusion than was expected. Scotland, whose only defeat was at the hands of England on Day 1, signed off with a 9-6 win against Wales with Newmachar's Adam Fisher clinching an excellent debut performance in winning all six ties in which he was involved. He was the only player in the tournament to achieve that distinction.
Had Ireland been able to beat England and they started the afgternoon well by winning the top two singles then Scotland would have been involved in a countback climax.
But the English rallied to draw the singles 5-5 and their 1pt lead from the foursomes was decisive in the final analysis.

NEWMACHAR'S NEW BOY FISHER IS TOURNAMENT

MVP WITH SIX WINS OUT OF SIX

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE R and
England had to pull out all the stops before they were crowned Boys Home Internationals champions for the third time in four years on a dramatic final day at Western Gailes Golf Club in Ayrshire.
After winning their opening two matches against Scotland and Wales, Derek Hughes’ sides needed a result against defending champions Ireland, who like Scotland, still had an outside chance of winning if results had gone their way.
In the end, England turned things around in the final singles session to defeat Ireland by 8-7 to complete a set of three wins for the week.
To compound matters for Roy Archibald’s Ireland side, the narrow defeat meant they finished third in the table after Scotland’s 9-6 win against Wales moved them into second with two wins.
At one stage eight of the singles matches were in Ireland’s favour, which would have been enough to turn around the 3-2 deficit from the morning foursomes, but would also have been good enough to retain the title based on the highest number of individual points won.
However, that scenario never materialised as England rallied and when Harry Hall won the last two holes to win by one hole against Cathal Butler, the match was secured.
“That was very, very tough, I don’t want to have any more days like that on a golf course,” said a relieved Hughes afterwards. “Fair play to Ireland, they came out with a new team this week and put in a great effort. I am proud of the way my lads battled, especially when it didn’t look good for a time, but the likes of Harry coming down the last and winning was crucial.”
As leaderboards changed all afternoon, Bradley Moore’s 4 and 3 win over Peter Kerr in the middle order ended Scotland’s chances as England secured more points than Scott Knowles’ side had accumulated. Moments later Jonathan Thomson came through a tight encounter to deny 15-year-old Owen Crooks 2 and 1 and that was the all-important point, which meant England had won the title.
“I much prefer to win the matches. If we manage that then the overall result looks after itself and thankfully that’s what happened today,” added Hughes.
Ireland can take a lot of positives from the week and look ahead as eight of the 11 players who competed at Western Gailes will be available for selection again next year when the under-18 team event moves to Conwy Golf Club in Wales.
“That was a very close run thing and a great performance by the boys,” said Archibald. “To take on England in the manner we did and narrowly lose 8-7, with a number of matches going to the final green, was a fantastic team effort.
“I can’t praise the boys highly enough. The experience this young side have gained will be invaluable.  It was close, the match came down to the last match on the last green, you can’t ask for any more than that. Of course they will be disappointed for a while but we’ll pick them up and get them going again.”
For Scotland there was a bright note when debutant Adam Fisher (pictured right) ended a great week as the only player to win all six matches.“I played solid throughout. On a tough links course like this, the secret is to make pars with the occasional birdie,” said the Newmachar golfer.
Scotland captain Knowles accepted there was too much to do but praised his team nonetheless.
“We were disappointed to have lost to England on the first day but I’m happy with the way we rallied to beat Ireland and Wales. The end result was out of our control today and fair play to England,” said Knowles.
The Wales captain Chris King was pleased that so many of his new caps had performed well.“Overall we’re disappointed because we felt we came here with a strong side,” said King.
“Thomas Froom, who has just turned 15, was fantastic again to close out his match against Stuart Easton (2 and 1). And Gaelen Trew was new to the team and he too got four points after his 4 and 3 win over George Burns in the bottom match.
“The new caps were buzzing and they can’t wait to come back and have a go at this again,” added King, who has five players available for Conwy next year.

The 2015 Boys Home Internationals will be played at Conwy Golf Club in Wales from August 4 to 6.

Whether or not Fox can make up five shots over the closing 18 holes is a moot point but a battle royal is assured with two shots spanning the leading six players.

All starting times for players who participated in the tournament last Sunday will remain.
There will be some spaces available now due to some players not being able to make the revised date so if anyone wishes to play then please phone club professional Colin Munro on 0141 810 4925.

NEW-LOOK LINE-UP FOR SOUTHERNDOWN, SOUTH WALES

ROBB GAINS FIRST CAP IN SCOTLAND

TEAM FOR HOME INTERNATIONALS

Fairstone Scottish Amateur champion Chris Robb has been selected in a new-look Scotland side for next week’s Men’s Home Internationals, the Meldrum House player one of five new faces bound for Wales.

The 23-year-old (pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency) from Banchory claimed a third straight domestic success at Downfield last weekend, winning the SGU’s flagship event with a 4 and 3 success over Glenbervie’s Graeme Robertson.

Robb’s red hot form has now earned him a debut in Scotland’s 11-man side seeking to repeat their 2012 triumph in the Home Internationals at Southerndown Golf Club from August 13 to 15.

“I was hoping to have done enough having won the Scottish Amateur, and I’m now looking forward to representing Scotland at Men’s level after previously playing at Boys’ level in the Homes and Europeans,” said Robb, who finished his US college career at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga earlier this year.

“I’ve had a good few tournaments. I played well finishing up in the US and from then on I’ve just kept it going. As far as Scottish golf is concerned, I’ve not been fantastic since the junior days, I suppose.

“I won the North-east District 72-hole amateur championship two years ago, but other than that, not much until now, so it’s been great to win the East of Scotland Championship, the Cameron Corbett Vase and then the Scottish Amateur.”

With Blairgowrie’s Bradley Neil, the Amateur champion, and Craigielaw’s Grant Forrest the St Andrews Links Trophy winner, contesting next week’s US Amateur Championship in Atlanta thanks to their places inside the top 50 of the World Amateur Golf Ranking, the Scotland side is much changed from 12 months ago at Ganton.

Robb is joined in the Scotland side by four other new faces at Men’s Home International level, namely Irish Open Stroke Play champion Jamie Savage (Cawder), last year’s Scottish Amateur semi-finalist Craig Ross (Kirkhill), ex-boys' cap Greig Marchbank (Thornhill) and Sutherland Chalice victor Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon).

Southerness member Scott Gibson returns to the line-up for the first time since 2011, while a quintet of experienced players are looking forward to further Home Internationals competition.

Palmer Cup-winning duo James Ross (Royal Burgess) and Kilmarnock Barassie’s Jack McDonald are joined by Scottish Amateur runner-up Robertson, making his fourth appearance in the event, Daniel Young of Craigie Hill and Kilmacolm’s Matthew Clark.

Selection criteria states that the top five Scottish players from the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), as well as the top two players on the SGU Men’s Order of Merit, automatically earn places on the team. The cut off date for automatic selection was 19 July.

With Neil and Forrest unavailable, only three leading players earned automatic selection off the WAGR – Savage, James Ross and McDonald – with second-placed Dunton the only Order of Merit automatic selection, given it is led by Neil. This resulted in seven selectors’ picks to complete the team.

SCOTLAND TEAM Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm) 32
Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon) 24
Scott Gibson (Southerness) 21
Greig Marchbank (Thornhill) 20

Craig Ross (Kirkhill) 21

'TOO DIFFICULT TO EVALUATE THE SOON TO BE 57 YEAR OLD'

McGinley squashes speculation that in-form

Langer is in his Ryder Cup team possibles

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – Those campaigning for Bernhard Langer as a European Ryder Cupper at Gleneagles next month might want to find another cause.
Paul McGinley all but squashed that idea Wednesday at the US PGA Championship, saying it was too difficult to evaluate the soon-to-be 57-year-old.
Why? Well, for starters, the European side uses both the Official World Golf Ranking and the Order of Merit for qualification. The only OWGR event that Langer played in this year was the Masters, where he tied for eighth, so he is not even on the radar.
Plus, with so many talented players vying for a spot, McGinley says it’s “very hard” to determine how a Champions Tour player stacks up.
“I’ll never say never,” McGinley said, “but it’s 99.9 percent sure that my picks will come from the guys who are on the periphery of the team and chasing at the moment.”

So at Valhalla, he preferred to discuss those players with a realistic chance to make the team. Currently, a few of the usual suspects are on the outside looking in, most notably Lee Westwood, Miguel Angel Jimenez and 2012 hero Ian Poulter. A recent run of five consecutive top 10s worldwide has pushed Graeme McDowell into one of the automatic spots on the World Points List, but he is just one point ahead of No. 9 Jamie Donaldson and two clear of No. 10 Luke Donald. Stephen Gallacher isn’t far behind, either.
The final day of U.S. qualifying is this Sunday, after the final round of the PGA, but the deadline for the European side is not until August 31.
“It’s all still up for grabs,” McGinley said. “I think it’s going to be an exciting run in for those guys, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it all evolves.”
