STUDENT FROM NAIRN TRANSFERRED TO OAKLAND UNIVERSITY

GOLDEN GRIZZLIES ADD SEAN

BURGESS TO GOLF ROSTER

FROM THE OAKLAND UNIVERSITY WEBSITE
ROCHESTER, Michigan - Sean Burgess will join the Oakland men's golf program for the 2014-15 season, announced head coach Russ Cunningham.

Burgess, a native of Nairn, Scotland, led South Mountain Community College to a national championship in 2013.
"Sean knows how to shoot low scores and he brings a wealth of competitive experience, which combined with his leadership qualities, will make an immediate impact," said Cunningham.
Burgess shot 8-over-par at the NJCAA Division II national championship as the Cougars finished at 13-under-par to capture the title by 29 shots. He garnered Ping All-America Honorable Mention honors as a sophomore.

Burgess earned all-region accolades during his freshman season and was named to the All-Freshman Team.
At Dobson Ranch Golf Course, Burgess fired a career-best 7-under-par 65 in Mesa, Arizona. His junior career includes several victories, including the North of Scotland boys' championship for the R P B Bain Trophy with rounds of 65 and 68. His 65 was a course record. He also won the Paul Lawrie Junior Jug tournament and played successfully for the North of Scotland boys' team

Seven Scots did beat the cut, headed by Ross Kellett (Kingsfield) with rounds of 71 and 70 for joint 10th place on 141 - nine shots behind the favourite for the £10,000 first prize, James Watts (Kingsway) who has had a pair of 66s for 12-under 132

NOT A COURSE RECORD - BUT STILL A BRILLIANT EFFORT

 PAUL LAWRIE SHOOTS A SEVEN-UNDER

 63 TO WIN £1,283 AT DEESIDE PRO-AM

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Paul Lawrie, playing over his "home course" - he lives at Bieldside, a couple of drivers from Deeside Golf Club, shot a brilliant seven-under-par 63 today to win the top pro prize of £1,283 in the Deeside Saltire Energy pro-am.
Lawrie, an honorary Deeside member, was first off the tee at 8am and he was able to set his own cracking pace.
He had an eagle 3 at the long sixth and birdies at the first, long third, seventh, eighth and ninth in covering the first nine holes in six-under-par 30, including a bogey at the second!
Paul eased off on the second nine with a birdie at the 15th and eighth pars for 33 home.
His 63 rivals any score over the Haughton Course but the back tees were not used today so it won't stand as a course record - more's the pity!
Nevertheless it was Lawrie's best round for a long time.
Greig Hutcheon (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre) and Graham Fox (Clydeway Golf) had 64s to finish joint second and earn £898 each. Fox had a bogey-free, six-birdie round while Hutcheon had two eagle 3s - at the sixth and 13th, as well as birdies at the fourth, eighth and 14th. Hutch bogeyed the seventh.
Laura Murray and Heather MacRae played well for rounds of 70 and 71 respectively. Laura bogeyed the last which she looked set to break par while Heather had a double bogey 6 at the second but an eagle 3 at the third.
Greg McBain (Paul Lawrie Golf Centre), joint fourth individually, led the Paul Lawrie Foundation 2 team of Ross Bremner (7), Chris Leonard (7) and Hugh Smith (12) to victory in the pro-am team competition with a net two-ball total of 21-under-par 119.

FAIRSTONE SCOTTISH AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP AT DOWNFIELD

TOP SEED NEIL THROUGH TO QUARTER

FINAL AGAINST JAMIESON

FROM THE SGU WEBSITE
Summary by ED HODGE, SGU Press Officer
Top seed Bradley Neil stayed on course to add the Fairstone Scottish amateur championship title to his impressive year, but a host of other in-form players are also hunting down the SGU’s flagship event.

At Dundee's Downfield, the former Open qualifying venue, all eight quarter-finalists will fancy their chances when the action resumes tomorrow morning.
The 18-year-old Neil (pictured), winner of the British amateur title at Royal Portrush last month, won the ‘Battle of Blairgowrie’ this morning, seeing off clubmate Glenn Campbell after a titanic match in front of a 70-strong crowd, before defeating Fraser Davren (Williamwood) 4 and 3 thanks to a seven-under-par scorecard.
Davren had earlier ended the hopes of Downfield stalwart Stewart Smith in round four.
Neil was two down to Campbell at the turn, but won the 10th and 11th before his short game ultimately saw him home after some wayward tee shots towards the finish.
“Coming back against Glenn this morning was also massive for my confidence. It can be hard to pull him back when he is ahead,” said the Perthshire player.
“I knew I was coming into the week as the No 1 seed, and as the highest-ranked player, but it was a bit strange being ranked as the first seed, given I’ve only played in the event once before.
"There are also several past champions in the field and a lot of good players in form.
“I had no expectations playing at The Open and have come back to play in a top Scottish event, on a course which is similar to Blairgowrie, so hopefully I can keep things going.”
In the last eight, Neil now faces Josh Jamieson (St Andrews New), with the pair knowing each other well from their days in the SGU youth ranks.
Jamieson, who has completed two years at Luke Donald’s former college at Northwestern in Chicago, said:
“Bradley has done fantastically well. He has shown us what is possible, but tomorrow is a good opportunity for me and I think I’m playing well.”
Jamieson saw off Kyle McClung (Wigtownshire) in the fifth round, after McClung had taken the fourth-round scalp of defending champion Alexander Culverwell.
In the second quarter, last year’s SGU Men’s Order of Merit winner Jack McDonald, from Kilmarnock Barassie, continued his fine week to emulate his run to the quarter-finals last year.
Two down after 10 holes to Glenbervie’s Cameron Buist, the winning European Palmer Cup team member turned things around in style after a birdie, birdie, birdie, eagle burst before sealing victory on the 18th.
With 12-year-old brother Ross pulling his bag, McDonald feels he is going under the radar a little, but knows he will have to be on top form to end the hopes of Chris Robb (Meldrum House) in their quarter-final.
Robb, who plans to go to European Tour Qualifying School at the end of the season, has yet to play the last three holes in his five matches this week, and has only played the 15th hole once.
Today the Banchory man saw off Scottish boys championship runner-up Ben Kinsley 5 and 4, before dispatching Ben Ferguson (The Vines) by a similar margin.
“I knew I was coming into this event playing well,” said Robb. “But I wasn’t pressurising myself. You just never know in match-play. It’s so different to stroke play. I’m pretty good off the tee so this course suits my eye.”
In the third quarter, Haggs Castle’s Barry Hume, the 2001 champion on its last staging at Downfield, produced his “best performance so far” to end the hopes of sixth seed Connor Syme (Dumfries and County), semi-finalist at the British amateur championship.
“I feel I have a better chance when it’s head to head,” said Hume, who now faces another Kilmarnock Barassie player in the quarters, Euan Walker.
Meantime, European Nations Cup team winner Graeme Robertson turned on the style at the finish against Matthew Clark (Kilmacolm), setting up a last-eight tie with another Scotland international team-mate, Grant Forrest.
Glenbervie’s Robertson turned his match around against Clark after playing the last six holes of their high-quality contest in seven under to secure a 4 and 2 win.
Forrest was also in form, none more so than in his morning game against Lanark’s Jamie Lamb when he recorded the first albatross of his career after holing a 200yd six-iron at the par-5 11th.
“One bounce and in it went,” said Grant who .
then won the battle of last year’s beaten semi-finalists, defeating Kirkhill’s Craig Ross 2 and 1, to keep the second seed and 2012 Scottish amateur champion at Royal Dornoch on course for more success.

AZERBAIJAN CHALLENGE OPEN

GREAT DANE WINTHER HAS A DOUBLE

EAGLE FIRST TO LEAD WITH A 65

EUROPEAN TOUR COMMUNICATIONS
A career first of two eagles in the same round enabled Denmark's Jeff Winther to make a late charge into a share of first place alongside former British amateur champion Garrick Porteous and in-form Frenchman Edouard Espana on the first day of the inaugural Azerbaijan Challenge Open at the National Azerbaijan Golf Club, Quba.
Winther, playing his first season on the Challenge Tour after graduating from the Nordic League last year, kept the bogeys off his card in a seven under par round of 65 at the country’s first – and so far only – 18-hole golf course.
Starting on the tenth tee, the Dane made his first gain of the day on the par three 13th before notching his first eagle with a chip-in two holes later.
He had to wait until the second hole for his next move up the leaderboard, but it was a significant one as a precise approach to six feet yielded a second eagle of the day and a career first for Winther.
The 26 year old said: “I told a few of the Danes last week that I’d never made two eagles in a round, so it was good to lose my virginity today! And it was also good that I didn’t make any bogeys, because I’ve been playing elevator golf recently, following a birdie with a bogey.
“So today was a very good day, especially as the course is playing really firm. It can easily catch you out, so you have to concentrate very hard on every shot.

"With the greens so hard, controlling the distance with your second shots can be very tough so sometimes you have to just say your prayers and hope for the best.”
Porteous’s performance marked a dramatic return to form for the Englishman, who has missed four cuts in five appearances on the Challenge Tour so far this season.
But a fast start in Quba, where he followed up an opening birdie with an eagle at the par five second hole courtesy of a huge drive and a wedge to eight feet, saw the confidence come flooding back.
Porteous said: “I haven’t made as good a start as I would’ve liked in my pro career, but it’s all a learning experience.

"I’ve just got to keep working hard and find a bit more consistency, because I’ve been playing well in patches but not managing to put four decent rounds together. Hopefully that changes this week.”
In contrast to Porteous’ mixed fortunes, Espana has enjoyed a golden spell of late, notching his second top six finish of the season on home soil last week to climb to 11th place in the Challenge Tour Rankings.
Espana is capable of feats of low scoring – as proved by his opening round of 62 in the Qualifying School Final Stage last year – and the 24 year old again sparkled in the ‘Land of Fire’, hitting all 18 greens in regulation and making eight birdies.
The Challenge Tour rookie said: “I didn’t think a 65 was possible on this course, but I played really well today. My confidence is high after some good results in recent weeks, so I tried to approach this tournament with exactly the same routine and attitude – and it worked out well.
“I’ve played a lot of golf already this season, so I’m taking two weeks off after this tournament and I’ll spend it relaxing on the beach.

It would obviously be nice to go into my holiday with another good result, so hopefully my run can continue for the rest of the week.”
Challenge Tour Rankings leader Andrew Johnston is also planning to take a break next week, and if he were to sign off with his third victory of the season – and his second in successive weeks – then the next time he tees up would be on The European Tour.
With two victories and a brace of top ten finishes in his last four tournaments, the burly Englishman is undoubtedly the form horse in this week’s 156-man field; and he stated his intention to take home the lion’s share of the €300,000 prize fund with a bogey-free round of 66 which moved him into a share of fourth place on six under par alongside his compatriot Ben Evans.
Johnston said: “I drove the ball really well today and managed to take advantage of the par fives, so that was the key to another low score. I didn’t miss anything from eight feet and in, so it was a very solid all-round performance.”
Evans matched Johnston’s round of 66, courtesy of eight birdies and two bogeys. Having missed eight cuts in his last ten outings, the performance signalled a welcome return to form for Evans, who finished with a flourish with back-to-back gains from the eighth hole.

SEPTEMBER 18 BIG DAY AT CASTLE COURSE, ST ANDREWS

D-Day for DF Communications North-east

Business Golf League finals

NEWS RELEASE
For a few North-east of Scotland business people, golf swings – rather than vote swings – will be to the fore on September 18 this year.
While the Scottish independence referendum is taking place, they'll taking part in the final of the DF Communications Golf League on the Castle Course at St Andrews.
DF Communications, an award-winning mobile phone and communications specialist to small, medium and large businesses, is sponsoring and organising the long-running league for a third consecutive year.
Money raised from this year’s event will go to the British Heart Foundation. The charity was nominated by Neil Ferguson and Andy Williamson, of Undersea Sense, who won the 2013 competition.
Craig Forsyth, sales director at DF Communications, said: “It’s certainly a big date to have the finals, but I’m sure there will be plenty of time to get to the polling station and go to St Andrews.
“We’re delighted to be returning to the Castle Course, having hosted the final at the same venue last year. I’m sure those teams lucky enough to make it will thoroughly enjoy their day out."
More than 40 companies from across the North-east have teed-off at a variety of local courses since April. The Business Golf League is played in a four-ball format with five or six teams in each division. The winners and runners-up of each division qualify for the September finals
